ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION

This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille, 2006-2011 Cadillac DTS, 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 23, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), and 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet). GM's number for this recall is 14299.

Your car caught fire while parked and turned off, with flames appearing near the radio and heater area in the dashboard. You noticed the fire about ten minutes after turning off the vehicle and used a water bottle to help extinguish it, with a bystander finishing the job with a fire extinguisher. There were no warning lights before this happened. The electrical wiring or components in the dashboard area may need complete inspection and replacement to prevent this from happening again.

Your dashboard is now showing a 'service airbags' warning message. This appears to be the same issue covered by recall #36110 for faulty wiring in the passenger seat, which the dealership says was already completed on your vehicle in the past — but the problem has returned.

Your car is making an abnormal grinding sound when starting and while driving, and the sound sometimes continues even after you turn off the engine. A mechanic replaced some unknown actuators behind the dashboard, but the grinding noise still persists. The issue started around 77,000 miles and hasn't been resolved yet. A technician will need to diagnose which electrical component is causing the grinding sound, likely involving the starter motor or other engine-mounted electrical actuators.

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated that when the vehicle was started, the air bag warning light illuminated. The local dealer was contacted by phone however, the vehicle was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V507000 (AIR BAGS, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM) however, the vin was not included. The manufacturer was informed of the failure but offered no additional assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 160,074.

THE DIAGNOSTIC REVEALED THAT THERE ARE 11 CODES IN THE VEHICLE SYSTEM. THESE CODES RANGED FROM PASSKEY SYSTEM FAILURES TO EVAP CODES TO TRANSMISSION. SUSPECTED FAILURE OF WIRING HARNESS ALTOGETHER WITH POSSIBLE BCM/CAM FAILURE AS WELL. DURING BATTERY TEST THERE WAS A REGULAR DROP IN VOLTAGE WHILE CONNECTED TO THE SCANNER REFLECTING A DRAIN IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM THAT COULD FURTHER BE CAUSING AN ISSUE. CODES ARE P0513 , P0523 , P0700 , P2122 , P0411, P0449 ,P0455. WHEN DRIVING STABILITRACK, ENGINE POWER REDUCED, AND STABILITRACK TRACTION CONTROL. SOMETIMES THE CAR SHUTS OFF WHILE DRIVING AND THE STEERING WHEEL WILL LOCK , I'D W OK OLD HAVE TO PULL OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY OR STREET AND POP THE HOOD JUST TO GET THE CAR STARTED AGAIN.

THE CONTACT ALSO INDICATED THAT THE REAR DEFROSTER HAD FAILED AND BURNT THE ELECTRICAL WIRES. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE LOCAL DEALER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE DEALER DID NOT SPECIFY WHEN THE OTHER THREE ACTUATORS WOULD POTENTIALLY FAIL. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BY THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE WARRANTY EXPIRED AND PROVIDED A CASE NUMBER. THE MANUFACTURER REFUSED TO HONOR THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 54,000.

THE AIRBAG LIGHT HAPPENS WITH ADULT FRONT PASSENGER, NOT WHILE SEAT IS EMPTY, AND WHILE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION.

THE REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER QUIT WORKING. MY SHOP FOUND THAT THE DEFOGGER HAD LOST ITS GROUND FUNCTION IN THE FUSE BLOCK IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE FUSE BLOCK HAD TO BE REPLACED IN ITS ENTIRETY COSTING OVER 200 DOLLARS. I DO NOT KNOW EXACTLY WHEN THE DEFOGGER FAILED.

I SHUT THE CAR OFF CHECKED ALL FLUIDS STARTED THE CAR BACK UP AND TRIED TO GET GOING AND THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. AFTER A FEW MINUTES I MANAGED TO GET THE CAR BACK HOME AND A FEW MONTHS LATER IT HAPPENS AGAIN. I WENT TO EDMUNDS FORUM AND THERE ARE DOZENS OF THE SAME COMPLAINTS FOR THE SAME THING.

MY SERVICE AIRBAG SENSOR LIGHT HAD BEEN ON SINCE I PURCHASED MY CAR A YEAR AGO, I AM GOING TO SELL IT BUT I DIDN'T WANT TO SELL IT WITH SOMETHING THAT HAS TO DO WITH SAFETY BEING QUESTIONABLE. I DROVE IT TO AUTO NATION YESTERDAY JUNE 11TH TO SEE IF IT WAS A RECALL. THEY SAID THERE HASN'T BEEN ONE. I DROVE IT HOME AND STARTED SEARCHING ONLINE FOR POSSIBLE PROBLEMS WITH IT AND THERE WERE SO MANY POSTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE. I SEARCHED UNDER THE PASSENGER SEAT BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT I READ TO DO AND LOW AND BEHOLD ALL TYPES OF WIRES UNDER IT ARE COMPLETELY SEVERED AND TORN UP. I WAS GOING TO FIX THIS MYSELF BUT I REALLY DON'T WANT TO BE HELD LIABLE IN CASE OF ACCIDENT OR INJURY. THIS MUST BE FIXED AND IT'S MY BELIEF THAT IT'S CAUSED BY THE VEHICLE DESIGN. PLEASE HOLD CHEVROLET RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS REPAIR AS IT IS VERY DANGEROUS FOR BOTH THE PASSENGER AND POSSIBLY EVERYONE ELSE IN THE VEHICLE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR LOOKING INTO THIS. I ALSO BELIEVE THAT WHEN A PERSON CALLS A DEALER TELLING THEN EXACTLY WHAT THEY FOUND D (I CALLED LENLYLE ON COLFAX AND SABLE IN AURORA, CO. AND EXPLAINED TO THEN MY FINDINGS AND THEY TOLD ME THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS REPAIR. THEY SHOULD DIRECT A PERSON TO YOU GUYS WHEN SOMETHING THAT HAS TO DO WITH SAFETY IS FOUND TO BE DEFECTIVE. THIS SHOULD BE A REQUIREMENT THAT THEY CONTACT YOU DOT AS WELL AS OFFER A REPAIR IMEDIATELY AND CONSIDER THEMSELVES LUCKY THAT SOMEONE WASN'T KILLED BECAUSE A PERSON CAME TO THEM WITH THE PROBLEM INSTEAD OF TRYING TO DO THE REPAIR THEMSELVES.

I HAVE TO KEEP THE PASSENGER SIDE SEAT BELT BUCKLED, OTHERWISE IT WILL MESS UP MY SENSORS. I'VE HAD MY AIRBAGS SHUT OFF AND A NOTIFICATION APPEAR BEFORE SO IT'S QUITE SCARY AND DEFINITELY A SAFETY HAZARD. I KNOW THIS IS A KNOWN RECALL, BUT I BELIEVE SINCE I HAVE A "POLICE PACKAGE" A RECALL FOR MY CAR WAS NEVER INITIATED, EVEN THOUGH IT HAS THE PROBLEM.

AND MY DRIVER SIDE BACK DOOR AUTO LOCK STOPPED WORKING.

A RECENT PROBLEM WITH THE REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER HAS UNFOLDED A PROBLEM WITH A WIRING HARNESS THAT POWERS THE WINDOW. GM NEVER INSTALLED A FUSE ON THE REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER CAUSING THE WIRE TO HEAT UP AND BURN AWAY THE SLOT IT SITS IN ON THE WIRE HARNESS. INSPECTING MY WIRE HARNESS, THE HEAT FROM THE WIRE HAS MELTED ALMOST ENTIRELY THROUGH THE CONNECTOR WHICH IS VERY DANGEROUS AND LIKELY TO CAUSE A FIRE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR UNDERNEATH THE CARPET AND FUSE PANEL.

THE TRACTION LIGHT COMES ON AND THE ENGINE WILL GEAR DOWN, TO THE DEGREE OF LOSS OF ENGINE POWER, POWER STEERING, AND POWER BRAKING. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES WHILE DRIVING LONG DISTANCES ON THE HIGHWAYS I FOUND RECALLS PENDING FOR THESE PROBLEMS AND MY VIN # IS NOT ON THE LIST. I HAVE A 2010 CHEVY IMPALA LT WITH 90K+ MILES ON IT. I ORIGINALLY BOUGHT THE CAR IN 2011 USED WITH 40K+ MILES ON IT, SO THE CAR IS NO LONGER COVERED THROUGH WARRANTY. ENGINE POWER REDUCED, SERVICE STABILITRAC, ETC. I'M A FULL TIME COLLEGE STUDENT, AND A FULL TIME UBER DRIVER. LAST NIGHT I WAS WITH A PASSENGER ON [XXX] TOWARDS O'HARE AIRPORT. MY CAR REDUCED SPEED AND SUDDENLY DROPPED SPEED FROM 70MPH DOWN TO 50MPH. AS I TURNED ON THE EMERGENCY LIGHT AND START STEERING TO THE RIGHT TO GET ONTO THE SHOULDER I WAS IN THE THIRD LANE TO THE RIGHT (THE EXPRESSWAY IS 4 LANES) AS I WAS TURNING TO THE RIGHT TO GET ONTO THE SHOULDER AND TO GET TO SAFETY MY STEERING LOCKS, AND THERE WAS A RECKLESS DRIVER GOING 100MPH TRYING TO CUT OFF TRAFFIC. THE LANES TO THE LEFT WERE BLOCKED SO HE HAD TO CUT ME OFF BY OVERTAKING ME BY GOING ONTO THE SHOULDER. FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND, THIS HAS BECOME AN EVER INCREASING PROBLEM. THIS NEEDS TO BE A RECALL. I WILL BE CONTACTING GM CORP. ALONG WITH THE NHTSA AND WILL FOLLOW UP WITH THE INFORMATION OR (EXCUSES) OF WHY THIS IS SOMEHOW MY PROBLEM. THIS CAR HAS ONLY 40,000 MILES. RECENTLY ALSO THE OIL PRESSURE LOW MESSAGE AND DUMMY LIGHT COME ON 3-4 TIMES BEFORE STOPPING (AND YES THE OIL PRESSURE IS GOOD WITH CORRECT OIL, TIRES, PRESSURE, BRAKES, SENSORS ALL CHECK GOOD). BEST GUESS DIAGNOSTICS IS SHORTING IN WIRING HARNESS THAT CAN NOT BE LOCATED UNTIL IT FAILS COMPLETELY. HOWEVER WITH GRABBING WITH TRACTION CONTROL WHEN PULLING OUT AND AIR BAG PROBLEMS IT IS OBVIOUS THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD.

MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, THE SERVICE STABILITYTRAC CAME ON, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND THERE WAS THIS OTHER LIGHT WHAT LOOKED LIKE TO BE A PICTURE OF THE CAR SWERVING ON ICE ALSO CAME ON. MY CAR SLOWED DOWN, BUT NEVER CUT OFF. MY GET UP ON MY CAR WASN'T WHAT IT NORMALLY IT. I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT HOME FROM WORK, BUT I THOUGHT IT WAS WEIRD THAT MY CAR STARTED TO DO THAT. I PURCHASED THIS CAR WITH ONLY A LITTLE OVER 40K MILES ON IT. I CHECKED THE OWNERS MANUAL AND THERE IS NOTHING IN THERE ABOUT A "SERVICE STABILITYTRAC". I IMMEDIATELY SEND 2 EMAILS TO THE GENTLEMAN THAT I WORK WITH AT THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP THAT I GOT MY CAR FROM. IT WAS AFTER HOURS WHEN I SENT THE EMAILS, SO I HAVE YET TO GET A RESPONSE. MY KEY IS STUCK IN THE IGNITION AND WILL NOT TURN BACK TO THE OFF POSITION SO I CAN GET THE KEY OUT. I HAVE TO DISCONNECT MY BATTERY TO KEEP THE BATTERY FROM DRAINING COMPLETELY WHEN NOT IN USE AND RECONNECT MY BATTERY WHEN I NEED TO DRIVE MY CAR, AND I CANNOT LOCK MY CAR BECAUSE OF THIS. I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE I COULD GET INJURED WHILE CONNECTING OR DISCONNECTING MY BATTERY AND I CANNOT SECURE MY CAR. THE PASSENGER AIR BAG INDICATOR IS ON. IT WAS NOT ON WHEN I PURCHASED THIS USED CAR BUT IT CAME ON AT APPROXIMATELY 70,000 MILES. MY REAR DEFROSTER BARELY WORKS. THE SPEEDOMETER STICKS AT ZERO THEN STARTS WORKING FOR A FEW TENTHS OF A MILE THEN GOES BACK TO ZERO AGAIN. I HAVE TO GUESS WHAT SPEED I AM GOING. THE SPEEDOMETER STARTED MALFUNCTIONING AT ABOUT 68,000 MILES. CHEVROLET REFUSES TO REPAIR ANY OF THE ABOVE AT THEIR EXPENSE. STATING THERE IS NO RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE. WHILE TRAVELING AWAY FROM HOME I PARKED MY CAR AND THE KEY IS STUCK IN THE IGNITION. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD DUE TO I HAD TO LEAVE THE KEYS IN THE CAR. THE NEXT MORNING THE CAR WOULD NOT START DUE TO THE BATTERY BEING DRAINED BECAUSE THE KEY WAS NOT IN THE OFF POSITION. THEREFORE I HAD TO BE TROUBLED WITH FINDING JUMPER CABLES WHILE AWAY FROM HOME OR BE TOWED TO THE NEAREST CHEVROLET DEALER (WHOM I MIGHT ADD DID NOT HAVE A TECHNICIAN THAT COULD FIX IT ON A SATURDAY MORNING). I CALLED ANOTHER CHEVROLET DEALER IN ANOTHER COUNTY CLOSE BY AND THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENT IS CLOSED ON SATURDAY. SO THEREFORE I HAVE HAD TO EITHER LEAVE MY VEHICLE RUNNING, LOOSEN THE BATTERY CABLES OR BE CLOSE BY TO ANOTHER VEHICLE THAT CAN GIVE ME A JUMP. (MORE INCONVENIENCE AND SAFETY HAZARDS FOR A FEMALE) I NOTICE WHILE RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM ONLINE THAT THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED ON THE IMPALA SINCE THE YEAR 2000. IT IS NOW 2013 AND THE PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED OR IMPROVED OVER THE YEARS. I FEEL THIS NOT ONLY IS AN INCONVENIENCE TO ME (YOUR CUSTOMER) BUT ALSO IS A SAFETY FEATURE THAT HAS FAILED TO EXCEED MY EXPECTATIONS OF DRIVING A CHEVROLET VEHICLE.
