ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION

This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

When you use the turn signal, you hear a loud buzzing noise and all dashboard lights flash on and off, including the gear shift labels and stereo. The dealership has replaced the body control module (BCM) and ignition switch, but the problem keeps recurring—the car starts intermittently but then fails to start again. This issue may require further diagnosis of the electrical system, possibly including the battery, alternator, starter motor, or additional BCM programming.

UNDER THE HOOD FIRE AND UNINTENDED KEY ROTATION. MAYBE 5 DAYS AFTER I TOOK MY VEHICLE INTO TC CHEVY (IN ASHLAND OREGON) TO HAVE THE 2 RECALLS REPAIRED ON IT. I TRIED TO START MY CAR AND IT CAUGHT ON FIRE DOWN BY THE FRONT BUMPER AND THE FLAMES MADE IT TO THE BACK SIDE OF THE MOTOR AND IGNITED THE FUEL LINES CAUSING A MINI EXPLOSION UNDER THE HOOD, MEAN WHILE I'M SITTING IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT. I JUMPED OUT OF THE CAR NEARLY HAVING THE LIFE SCARED OUT OF ME, I POPPED THE HOOD AND GRABBED MY HOUSE GARDEN HOUSE AND STARTED TO TRY AND PUT THE FIRE OUT AND MINIMIZE THE DAMAGE TO MY VEHICLE WHILE I WAITED FOR THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TO REACH MY HOUSE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT SHOWED UP AND WAS ABLE TO GET THE FIRE PUT OUT ALMOST TORCHING ONE OF THE FIREFIGHTERS HEAD WHEN THE FUEL PUMP KICKED ON WITHOUT THE KEYS IN THE IGNITION AND STARTED SHOOTING GASOLINE REIGNITING THE FIRE. I'M LUCKY THE FIRE DIDN'T BURN DOWN MY HOUSE AND MY NEIGHBOR'S HOUSE THAT DAY SEEING HOW THE FIRE CAUGHT THE BUSH NEXT DOOR ON FIRE AND THERE WAS FLAMES 14 FT IN THE AIR. SEE CHEVY AND GM HAVE BEEN TRYING TO ACT LIKE THE FIRE AND THE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE IS MY OWN FAULT AND NONE OF THEIR OWN EVEN THOUGH THE TECHNICIAN SAYS NONE OF THE REPAIRS WERE ACTUALLY DONE. I'VE BEEN TRYING TO GET AN INVESTIGATION DONE AND THEY'RE TRYING TO PUSH MY CLAIM ASIDE AND SWEEP IT UNDER THE RUG. IT HAS STALLED NUMORUS TIMES WHEN PULLING INTO TRAFFIC AND ALMOST CAUSED ME TO BE HIT. THE SERVICE TRACTION CONTROL/ABS WARNING LIGHT DINGS AND STAYS LIT. I MANUALLY TURN OFF ABS BUT PROBLEM STILL OCCURS. ALSO THE WIRING THRU OUT THE CAR HAS FAILED TO MY REARVIEW MIRROR, DOMELIGHTS AND RADIO PANEL. MY GAS MILEAGE HAS SIGNIFICANTLY DECREASED. CALLED GM AND THEY TOOK VEHICLE TO WALTER JACKSON CHEVROLET IN RINGGOLD, GA FOR INSPECTION. THE CAUSE, THEY FOUND, WAS A PERSISTENT WATER LEAK BEHIND THE GLOVE BOX WHICH CAUSED CORROSION AND CAUSED THE AIRBAGS TO DEPLOY. WE HAVE ATTEMPTED TO HAVE THIS LEAK REPAIRED MULTIPLE TIMES, BUT ATTEMPTS ONLY SUCCEEDED TEMPORARILY, IF AT ALL. FOUND FROM INTERNET SEARCHES THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH GM VEHICLES. AS I ALSO DRIVE A 2004 IMPALA THAT HAS HAD THE SAME LEAK, I AM CONCERNED THAT ITS AIRBAGS COULD ALSO DEPLOY AT ANY TIME. WE ARE THE SECOND OWNERS OF THIS VEHICLE BUT ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE CAR'S HISTORY, AS IT WAS PURCHASED FROM A FAMILY MEMBER. KELLEY BLUE BOOK VALUES IT AT $2,000 AND REPAIRS ARE ESTIMATED AT $4,000. FOLLOWING IS A LIST OF REPAIRS ON THE CAR, EXCEPTING ROUTINE MAINTENANCE: 12-20-2007- RIGHT SIDE COWL PANEL SEAL- TO FIX LEAK UNDER GLOVE BOX 5-15-2010- BODY REPAIR- GRASS FIRE GOT CLOSE ENOUGH TO BLISTER PAINT ON RIGHT SIDE OF CAR BEFORE FIRE DEPT. PUT IT OUT. (WE WEREN'T THERE TO MOVE IT.) 11-19-2013- WINDSHIELD AND GASKET- LEAKING AGAIN. 5-13-2016- REPAIR WATER LEAK- LEAKING AGAIN. THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW. THERE ARE SEVERAL DIFFERENT AFTER-MARKET FIXES ON THE INTERNET THAT MECHANICALLY INCLINED PEOPLE HAVE DEVISED, BUT THIS SHOULD NOT BE NECESSARY. THE VEHICLE SHOULD BE SAFE FROM THIS PROBLEM WHEN IT ROLLS OFF THE ASSEMBLY LINE.

THEN AFTER A DAY OR TWO THE RIGHT TURNING SIGNAL WOULD WORK BUT THEN THE LEFT TURNING SIGNAL WON'T WORK. THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THEY WOULD BOTH WORK THEN BOTH STOP WORKING. NOW A MONTH HAS PASSED AND NEITHER ONE OF THEM WORK MOST THE TIME, BUT WILL WORK FOR A HOT SECOND AND THEN STOP WORKING. THIS IS ONLY FOR THE REAR TURNING SIGNAL THOUGH THE FRONT TURNING SIGNAL HAVE ALWAYS WORKED PROPERLY AND STILL DO.

I HAVE HAD TO HAVE MY CAR TOAD HOME NOT NOWING WHAT THIS WAS AND HAS ALSO HAD TO DEAL WITH THIS WHEN I WAS OUT OF TOWN AND NOT SURE WHAT WAS GOING ON THIS IS VERY INCONVIENT. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING? I WAS IN MY CAR MOVING FORWARD ON A STATE HIGHWAY WITH THE AIR CONDITIONING ON WHEN SMOKE STATED TO COME OUT OF THE AIR VENTS. REPAIR SHOP QUOTES $500 IN PARTS/LABOR TO FIX. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL FIX. THIS VEHICLE HAS ONLY 57000 MILES AND I BOUGHT IT USED 6 YEARS AGO WITH ONLY 9500 ORIGINAL MILES.

NOT ONLY HAS THIS ISSUE BEEN AN INCONVENIENCE, BUT I HAVE HAD OCCASIONS WHERE IT HAS PUT ME IN DANGER. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PASSLOCK SYSTEM FAILURE, NOR DO I HAVE THE FUNDS TO REPAIR OR REMOVE IT. I BELIEVE THAT PASSLOCK WAS A FAULTY SYSTEM FROM THE BEGINNING AND THE FACT THAT IT HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED SHOCKS ME. I HAVE TALKED TO SERVICE EXPERTS AT MY LOCAL CHEVY DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAVE TOLD ME ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION THAT THIS ISSUE IS WIDESPREAD, INCLUDING MANY GM VEHICLES, AND THAT EVENTUALLY MY CAR JUST WON'T START ANYMORE. I WAS TRAVELING 77 MPH, SO I MOVED TO THE ONCOMING TRAFFIC LANE (THE LEFT LANE) IN ORDER TO PASS THE TRUCK. AT THE LAST SECOND THE TRUCK SWERVED INTO THE LEFT LANE IN ORDER TO MAKE A WIDE TURN. I ABRUPTLY JERKED THE STEERING WHEEL RIGHT TO AVOID COLLISION WITH THE TRUCK, BUT THE VEHICLE SEEMED TO LOSE POWER STEERING AS WELL AS POWER BRAKES. I WAS UNABLE TO STRAIGHTEN THE STEERING WHEEL BACK AFTER JERKING IT TO THE RIGHT TO GO BACK INTO THE RIGHT LANE; MY VEHICLE HIT THE BACK OF THE ENCLOSED TRAILER AND THEN HIT STEEP DITCH WHERE MY BACK PASSENGER TIRE POPPED AND THE VEHICLE FLIPPED ONTO ITS ROOF. IT WOULD TAKE MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS TO GET THE VEHICLE STARTED, THEN AT TIMES, THE VEHICLE WOULD STOP RUNNING SUDDENLY. I PICKED THE CAR UP THURSDAY NIGHT AND THE SALES LADY THAT DROVE IT AROUND SAID THAT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO START THAT SHE HAD TO GET A MECHNIC TO START IT. I FOUND THE GENERAL MANAGER AND ASKED HIM TO REVERSE THE RECALL BY POPPING THE COVER OFF THE KEY. HE DID AND THE CAR STARTED WITH ONLY A SMALL GRIB TROUBLE FROM THE TUMBLER WHICH IS THOUGHT TO BE CAUSED BY THE NUMBER OF FORCED STARTS AFTER THE KEY COVER WAS PLACED ON THE KEY. AFTER INSPECTION IT WAS FOUND THAT THE COVER FROM THE RECALL WAS PREVENTING MY KEY FROM GOING IN ALL THAT WAY TO THE TUMBLER TO START THE CAR. I AM ASKING THAT THE TUMBLER BE REPLACED AND A NEW SET OF KEYS BECAUSE OF THE DAMAGE DONE TO MY KEY AND THE RECALL NOT BEING EFFECTIVE WITHOUT DAMAGE TO MY TUMBLER. I TOOK IT IN ON 11/17/14 AND LEFT IT ALL DAY. BACK ON 9/29 I WAS TOLD THEY WERE GOING TO PUT A LOCKING GUARD ON THE IGNITION AND A LOCK ON EACH KEY SO THAT THE KEY WOULDN'T SLIP OUT. RECENTLY PURCHASED A USED 2003 IMPALA, I WAS UNAWARE AT THE TIME OF THE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON THE ISSUE OF THE PASSLOCK FEATURE. THE PASSLOCK FEATURE SHUTS DOWN THE OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE WHEN IT DOSEN'T RECOGNIZE THE KEY. THE KEY IS THE MATCHING SET FOR THE PASSLOCK. FOR THE SHORT TIME WE HAD THE CAR WE EXPERIENCED A SHUT DOWN DURING OPERATION. LUCKY FOR US NO ONE WAS INJURED, AT APPROXMATE 45 MPH THE CAR JUST SHUT DOWN AND THE SECURITY LIGHT CAME ON. HAD TO DEAD STEER AND BRAKE THE CAR TO A STOP RESULTING IN THE CAR OFF THE ROAD IN THE DITCH. TRIED TO RESTART VEHICLE, DID NOT EVEN TRY TO CRANK OVER. SECURITY LIGHT WAS ON AT THE DISPLAY HAD TO SIT FOR A FEW MINUTES AND TRIED AGAIN THEN THE CAR STARTED. GOT IT HOME FORTUNATELY WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENTS. SINCE THEN THERE WERE SEVERAL INSTANCES THAT THE CAR WOULD NOT RECOGNIZE THE KEY AND SHUT DOWN THE CAR. I AM VERY AGGRIVATED THAT WE HAVE TO EXPERIENCE SUCH ISSUES AS CONSUMERS, WITHOUT ANY ATTEMPTS OR CONCERNS FROM THE MANUFACTURER TO DEAL WITH SUCH A WIDE SPREAD PROBLEM. BUT, ON OCTOBER 9, 2013 I WAS ABOUT 65 MILES FROM HOME AND TRIED TO TURN THE KEY TO GO HOME AND IT WOULD NOT TURN. I HAD TO CALL A TOWING COMPANY TO TOW IT HOME. WITHIN A FEW DAYS I HAD IT TOWED TO A SERVICE CENTER AND WAS TOLD THE IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER HAD TO BE REPLACED. TOTAL CHARGE FOR REPAIR WAS $423.56 ! THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED IT TOOK OVER AN HOUR FOR THE CAR TO START. THE SECOND TIME, IT TOOK OVER AN HOUR AS WELL. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME AND IM ON DAY 2 OF LEAVING THE KEY IN THE ON POSITION AND NOTHING IS HAPPENING. I CONTACTED THE DEALER AGAIN AND AT FIRST I WAS TOLD I NEEDED TO BRING IT IN FOR A SECURITY SYSTEM RESET. THEN I WAS TOLD THAT I NEED TO REPLACE BCM WITHOUT ANYONE ACTUALLY LOOKING AT MY CAR. AFTER RESEARCHING ONLINE, THERE ARE SEVERAL COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS SAME ISSUE ON MODEL 2000-2005. GM IS CLEARLY AWARE OF THIS DEFECT BUT REFUSE RECALL. RECENTLY, WHEN I ARRIVED AT A LOCAL BUSINESS CENTER, I ATTEMPTED TO TURN THE IGNITION KEY TO OFF AND I COULD NOT. THE KEY WAS STUCK IN THE ACC POSITION, AND THUS COULD NOT BE REMOVED. IN ADDITION, ALL THE ACCESSORIES WERE ON. RELUCTANTLY, I HAD TO LEAVE MY CAR IN A PUBLIC PARKING LOT WITH THE POWER ON AND MY KEYS DANGLING IN THE IGNITION. WHEN I DROVE HOME, ONCE AGAIN THE KEY WOULD NOT ROTATE TO THE OFF POSITION -- IT REMAINED AT ACC. I ATTEMPTED MANY FIXES FOR THE PROBLEM -- REPEATEDLY SHIFTING INTO PARK, TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL, ETC. I WAS FORCED TO LEAVE THE CAR ON, AND WITH THE KEY IN THE IGNITION. MY BATTERY IN TIME WOULD BE DEAD. PERHAPS WORSE, MY CAR WAS JUST SITTING THERE WAITING FOR AN OPPORTUNISTIC THIEF. I SEARCHED ONLINE FOR HELP AND FOUND SCORES OF REPORTS OF IMPALA OWNERS WHO HAD THE IDENTICAL PROBLEM. THE IGNITION KEY GETS STUCK IN ACC AND CAN'T BE REMOVED. IT'S AN INTOLERABLE SITUATION BECAUSE YOU CAN'T SECURE YOUR CAR. NOT TO MENTION THAT YOU CAN'T TURN THE ACCESSORIES OFF, SO YOU HAVE A GUARANTEED DRAINED BATTERY. LOW-BEAM HEADLIGHTS HAVE FAILED TO COME ON AND WILL NO LONGER FUNCTION. HIGH-BEAMS AND DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS STILL FUNCTION, BUT AT DUSK THE LOW-BEAMS WILL FAIL TO LIGHT; HOWEVER HIGH-BEAMS CAN BE USED INSTEAD CREATING A TRAFFIC HAZARD. I REPLACED THE MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH WITH A NEW SWITCH, AND REPLACED THE RELAY WITH A KNOWN GOOD WORKING RELAY. THE RELAY WILL STILL WORK AND ACTUATE INDICATING THAT THE RELAY IS NOT THE PROBLEM. I CHECKED THE BULBS AND THEY ARE STILL GOOD, FUSES ARE FINE, 12V POSITIVE POWER IS PRESENT AT THE BULB, BUT THE GROUND IS NOT ACTIVATED ON EITHER SIDE AT ANY TIME. ALL PROBLEMS POINT TO A BAD BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM). I HAVE CHECKED ONLINE AND THERE ARE MANY MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS VEHICLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. IF THE LOW-BEAM HEADLIGHTS FAIL ON SOMEBODY WHILE THEY ARE DRIVING, IT COULD CAUSE A CRASH AND WITH THAT COMES THE POSSIBILITY OF THE FATALITY OF THE DRIVER AND PASSENGERS. I CURRENTLY OWN A 2003 CHEVY IMPALA WITH ABOUT 77,000 MILES ON IT. A FEW MONTHS AGO, THE SECURITY LIGHT WOULD PERIODICALLY COME ON AND CAUSE THE CAR NOT TO START. DURING THE LAST INSPECTION, I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND ASKED HIM TO CHECK IT. SINCE THE LIGHT HAD NOT COME ON FOR 3 OR 4 WEEKS AT THAT TIME, HE SAID THAT IT MORE THAN LIKELY WOULD NOT SHOW ANYTHING ON THE DIAGNOSTICS. HE SAID IT COULD ALSO BE AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM WITH THE STARTER. THEY CHARGED ME $80 TO CHECK THE CONNECTIONS TO THE STARTER AND I STILL HAD THE PROBLEM. THEY SAID THAT MORE THAN LIKELY IT WOULD BE A PROBLEM WITH THE COMPUTER IN THE CAR AND WOULD COST A FEW HUNDRED DOLLARS TO FIX. AFTER DOING MORE RESEARCH ONLINE, I DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS NOT A RANDOM PROBLEM WITH MY VEHICLE, BUT A KNOWN ISSUE THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED UNDER A RECALL. I HAVE OWNED BOTH DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN CARS IN THE PAST, AND I HAVE NEVER HAD AS MANY PROBLEMS WITH THE FOREIGN ONES AS I DO WITH THE DOMESTIC. OF COURSE THE DEALER REP SAYS THAT THE PROBLEM WAS PRE EXISTING AS ALL THE OTHER FUNCTIONS WORK. I WILL NOW START LOOKING INTO THE CAUSE OF THE DOOR LOCK FAILURE. HERE'S WHY I'M WRITING. IN EXASPERATION THEY REPLACED THE BODY CONTROL MODULE. THIS SEEMED TO "FIX" THE PROBLEM. NOW A YEAR AND A HALF LATER AND OUT OF BOTH MY WARRANTY AND EXTENDED WARRANTY WE'RE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS AGAIN. I'VE TAKEN IT AGAIN TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY DROVE IT FOR THREE DAYS. CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT AGAIN. I DROVE IT AND TODAY IT WOULDN'T LOCK AND OR START. I WAITED ABOUT 30 MINUTES AND WAS ABLE TO GET IT TO START AGAIN. TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER BUT THEY JUST SAID WITHOUT A CODE THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING. THIRD TIME I AGAIN WAITED 10 MINUTES AND IT STARTED. I JUST KNOW SOME DAY THAT TRICK IS NOT GOING TO WORK. THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH CHEVROLET CARS WITH "PASSLOCK" SECURITY. THE SECURITY BANNER WILL APPEAR IN THE DASH MONITOR. SHORTLY AFTER THIS THE CAR WILL NOT START FOR 10 TO 15 MINUTES,AFTER BEING SHUT OFF. THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IS IN PERFECT WORKING ORDER. DURING THIS TIME THE SECURITY BANNER ALTERNATES WITH THE BATTERY ICON. WITH THE IGN SWITCH IN THE ON POSITION. AFTER THE 10 TO 15 MINUTES THE CAR WILL CORRECT ITSELF AND START AS IF NOTHING HAPPENED. MY TRUE CONCERN HERE IS THAT,THIS IS MY WIFE'S CAR AND NOW SHE TELLS ME SHE LEAVES IT RUNNING AT THE GAS PUMP. FOR FEAR OF IT NOT STARTING. THIS IS WHERE SAFETY COMES IN. IS IT NOT POSTED ON ALL GAS PUMPS. TO SHUT OFF ENGINE? MANY OF THESE CARS ARE NOT UNDER WARRANTY. AND THE DEALERS FROM REPORTS I'VE READ SEEM TO THROW PARTS AT THIS PROBLEM AT THE CAR OWNERS COST. TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT AND ABS LIGHT BOTH CAN COME ON AT INTERMITTENT TIMES. BOTH HAPPEN WHEN TURNING INTO OR BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE IN ANY SORT OF WEATHER INCLUDING PERFECTLY DRY CEMENT. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THIS PROBLEM HAS LEAD TO ACCIDENTS WITH INDIVIDUALS BECAUSE YOU DON'T GET THE FULL BREAKING POWER WHEN MAKING TURNS. THIS HAPPENS ALSO WHEN MAKING SLOW TURNS AROUND ANY CORNER. SHE CALLED ME VIA CELL PHONE AND BEGAN TO EXPLAIN WHEN THE LIGHTS CAME BACK ON. SHE PROCEEDED TOWARD OUR HOME AND ABOUT 500 FEET FROM OUR DRIVEWAY THE LIGHTS WENT OFF AGAIN. I SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND SEVERAL OTHER IDENTICAL INSTANCES WITH NO RESOLUTION AS THE PROBLEM APPEARS INTERMITTENTLY. AN INTERNET TECH SAID THE FIX IS TO REPLACE THE BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM). I HAVE ALREADY HAD ONE REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE FOR A NON-RELATED PROBLEM ON 08/04/2006. I HAVE NOT YET CALLED THE DEALER THIS TIME BECAUSE OF THEIR DENIAL OF THE PREVIOUS BCM PROBLEM - THAT ONCE REPLACED AT MY INSISTENCE FIXED THAT PROBLEM. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE ABS AND TRACTION CONTROL INTERMITTENTLY STOP WORKING. THE ABS AND TRACTION CONTROL LAMPS ILLUMINATED BEFORE THE SYSTEMS WOULD FAIL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION AND REPAIRS. THE DEALER DISCOVERED THE WIRING HARNESS HAD RUSTED AND CAUSED THE SYSTEMS TO FAIL. THE WIRING HARNESS WAS REPLACED AND THE VEHICLE OPERATES NORMALLY.

THE BATTERY DIED BEFORE HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP FOUND THE BCM, AND THE BATTERY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THEY STATE IT WAS BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DRIVEN ENOUGH. IN TALKING TO THE MANAGER AT SEARS, WHERE I HAD THE BATTERY REPLACED, 8 OUT OF 10 AC DELCO BATTERIES THAT THEY REPLACE, FAIL THIS WAY. IN TALKING TO CHEVROLET SERVICE MANAGERS, THEY SEE THIS QUITE OFTEN. I WAS TOLD THAT AC DELCO NOW HAS BATTERIES MADE OFF SHORE. HOW LONG BEFORE CRITICAL SYSTEMS ARE AFFECTED?

IN JANUARY 2004 WE PURCHASED A PRE-OWNED 2003 CHEVROLET IMPALA FROM LARRY PUCKETT CHEVROLET'S PROGRAM CAR FLEET, [XXX]. THE WARRANTY ON THE VEHICLE WAS UP TO 36,000 MILES. UNTIL THE PAST 2 WEEKS WE HAVE BEEN MORE THAN PLEASED WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF THE VEHICLE. ON JUNE 17, 2005 MY WIFE, HER MOTHER AND OUR TWO CHILDREN, (4 YRS. AND 10 MONTHS OLD), WERE TRAVELING ON INTERSTATE 85 SOUTH COMING TO MONTGOMERY FROM ATLANTA WHEN THE VEHICLE SHUTS DOWN AND LOSES ALL POWER. MY WIFE LOST ALL POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES, AT 70 MPH SHE HAD TO WRESTLE THE WHEEL AND STAND ON THE BRAKES TO DIRECT THE VEHICLE TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. AT THAT POINT, THE VEHICLE CRANKS UP FINE AND SHE COMPLETES THE TRIP. FOLLOWING THE TOTAL POWER SHUTDOWN THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO LARRY PUCKETT CHEVROLET FOR REPAIR. MR. DONALD BARBER WAS THE ASSOCIATE WHO WAS OUR SERVICE CONSULTANT. HE EXPLAINED TO MY WIFE FOLLOWING REPLACEMENT OF THE IGNITION SWITCH THAT HE HAD SEEN THIS SITUATION BEFORE. THAT, WAS OF GREAT CONCERN WITH ME. HAS THIS PROBLEM CAUSED INJURY OR DEATH TO ANOTHER CONSUMER? THERE IS AN EPIDEMIC RISE IN THE NUMBER OF CARS DRIVING WITH ONLY ONE HEADLIGHT BECAUSE OF POOR ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING/MANUFACTURING OF THAT SYSTEM IN AMERICAN MADE CARS. I DO NOT SEE THAT PROBLEM WITH FOREIGN MADE CARS. IT IS DIFFICULT TO BELIEVE THAT IN 2003 AMERICAN CAR MANUFACTURERS CANNOT BUILD A CAR WHERE HEADLIGHTS WILL NOT FAIL -- AND I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT FAILURES CAUSED BY ACCIDENTS OR IMPACTS. IN OHIO IT WAS REALLY BAD, AND AS I MOVE AROUND THE COUNTRY IT IS NOT ISOLATED AT ALL, THERE ARE MILLIONS OF HEADLIGHT FAILURES IN AMERICAN CARS, REGARDLESS OF THEIR AGE OR YEAR. THIS IS A WIDE-SPREAD PROBLEM THAT CAN BE TRACED TO AMERICAN CAR MANUFACTURING AND ENGINEERING PROBLEMS. HEADLIGHTS ARE A MAJOR SAFETY ITEM IN A CAR, AND THEY SHOULD NOT BE FAILING AT SUCH AN ALARMING RATE. I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT NO-ONE HAS TAKEN ACTION TO DATE REGARDING THIS OBVIOUS ISSUE. *NLM
