NHTSA Campaign: 15V701000

Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1997-2004 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. The affected vehicles were previously repaired under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 to address the possibility that engine oil may drip onto the hot exhaust manifold.

Risk: Engine oil that drips onto the hot surface of the exhaust manifold may result in a fire.

Fix: The remedy applied under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 did not adequately remove the safety risk. Under the improved remedy, dealers will replace the engine’s front valve cover and gasket. Vehicles that are covered by recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, or 15V-201 that have not yet received the original remedy will instead receive the improved remedy under the original recall number. The recall began on February 19, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Oldsmobile customer service at 1-800-442-6537 and Pontiac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 15757. Note: Until the improved remedy has been applied, owners are advised to park their vehicle outside since the fire risk exists even when the vehicle is unattended.

Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION

This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.

Risk: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A CONDITION IN WHICH DROPS OF ENGINE OIL MAY BE DEPOSITED ON THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD THROUGH HARD BRAKING.

Your car is shutting off unexpectedly while you're driving, with no warning signs or error codes appearing. This happened on the highway at 60 mph, which created a dangerous situation for you and other drivers. The unpredictability of when this will occur makes it a serious safety concern. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the electrical system to find what's causing the engine to lose power, which may require replacing a faulty alternator, battery, or engine control module.

Filed: Oct 2023

Your car's Passlock security system has failed, which completely disables your vehicle's electrical system and prevents you from starting the car or opening the trunk. Even disconnecting the battery only provides temporary relief before the problem returns. The owner reports that diagnostic and repair costs are very expensive, and this issue affects many GM vehicle models across decades.

When you turned the key to start your car after it sat parked for 2 days, you heard a loud bang like a gunshot and white smoke came from under the hood. The plastic intake manifold gasket had exploded into pieces and blown apart. The repair will likely require replacing the intake manifold gasket and possibly the manifold itself.

Your fuel line is leaking gasoline underneath the engine. This is a fuel system problem that needs prompt attention since gas leaks are a safety hazard. A mechanic will need to inspect the fuel line for cracks or damage and replace any compromised sections.

Vehicle Speed Control, forward Collision Avoidance1 issue
criticalVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
Filed: Jan 2023

Your accelerator pedal keeps getting stuck when you're at traffic lights and while driving. This can cause your car to unexpectedly speed up, which is a safety concern. The issue may be related to the accelerator mechanism or throttle control system, and you should have a mechanic inspect and repair the stuck pedal right away.

NHTSA #: 11502668
Vehicle Speed Control1 issue
criticalVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Filed: Oct 2021

While using cruise control at 58 mph, you rapidly pressed the accelerate button 4-6 times in quick succession. Your car's engine responded as if you had floored the accelerator, the transmission downshifted, and the car accelerated to 70+ mph and kept climbing past 85 mph with the throttle wide open. Pressing the brake pedal and turning off cruise control didn't stop the acceleration. You had to shift to neutral and turn off the ignition to regain control. When you restarted the engine, it revved out of control again until you disconnected the battery for several minutes. The throttle body appeared to be in the idle position despite the wide-open throttle behavior, suggesting an electronic control issue rather than a mechanical cable problem. The fix will likely require a diagnostic scan of the engine control computer and possibly a software update or replacement of the throttle control module.

Your intake manifold exploded and caught fire while you were getting a jump start, causing fuel lines to melt. The fire occurred in the engine bay of your 3.8L engine shortly after you purchased the vehicle. The manufacturer shows no open recalls for this issue. Resolving this will likely require replacing the intake manifold, fuel lines, and assessing any fire damage to surrounding engine components.

Filed: Dec 2019

Your ABS and traction control lights are coming on, causing a grinding noise and your brakes to grab unexpectedly — making the car unsafe to drive. This has been happening for the last 5,000 miles and occurs while turning or braking on city streets and highways. You can't manually turn the traction control off; it activates on its own. The fix will likely involve diagnosing and repairing the ABS system, traction control module, or related brake components.

CrashFiled: Oct 2019

Your car was in two separate front-end accidents, but the front airbags failed to deploy in either crash. This is a serious safety issue since airbags are designed to protect you during head-on collisions. The airbag system will need to be diagnosed and repaired by a technician to determine why it didn't work.

Your Chevy Impala has multiple issues that need attention: significant rust on the undercarriage, worn-out struts affecting suspension, and a failing oil pump. A repair shop recommended these fixes but then advised against bringing the car back. You'll likely need to address the rust damage, replace the struts, and replace the oil pump to keep your car running properly.

Filed: Mar 2021

Your car's power steering system is leaking fluid, causing a whining noise that gets worse when you turn the steering wheel. The fluid level drops quickly—within 20-25 miles of refilling—forcing you to add more fluid repeatedly just to drive safely. Your husband suspects the power steering return hose may be rubbing against the engine or has developed a hole, but the exact leak location needs to be diagnosed by a mechanic.

The dealership has replaced the body control module (BCM) and ignition switch, but the problem keeps recurring—the car starts intermittently but then fails to start again. This issue may require further diagnosis of the electrical system, possibly including the battery, alternator, starter motor, or additional BCM programming.

Your turn signals have been working on and off for 6 years. When you start from a complete stop, your transmission makes a squeaking noise, which started after you changed the fluid and filter for the second time. Your ABS (anti-lock braking system) stopped working 6 years ago. These issues may require diagnostics of the electrical system for the turn signals, transmission fluid and belt inspection for the squeaking, and ABS module repair or replacement.
