NHTSA Campaign: 16V502000

Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Buick Verano and 2016 Chevrolet Malibu as the electronic park lock lever may allow the ignition key to be removed without the transmission being in PARK. Also, certain 2013 Buick Encore, 2011 Buick Regal, 2013-2014 Buick Verano, 2011-2016 Chevrolet Cruze, 2010-2013 Chevrolet Equinox 2013-2015 Chevrolet Malibu, and 2011-2013 GMC Terrain vehicles may have been serviced with similar defective replacement electronic park lock levers. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention."

Risk: If the key is removed without the transmission in PARK, the vehicle may rollaway as occupants are exiting, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and if necessary replace the key cylinder lock housing, free of charge. The recall began on October 14, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick 1-800-521-7300, and GMC 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 50490 and 50491.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Buick LaCrosse, Regal and Chevrolet Camaro, as well as certain 2010-2012 Cadillac SRX, Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles, equipped with power height adjustable driver and passenger seats. In the affected vehicles, the bolt that secures the driver's and passenger's power front seat height adjuster may fall out causing the seat to drop suddenly to the lowest vertical position.

Risk: If the driver's seat unexpectedly drops, the distraction and altered seat position may affect the drivers' control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the height adjuster shoulder bolts, free of charge. The manufacturer distributed interim letters to owners on September 11, 2014. The recall began on December 26, 2014. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), or 1-800-462-8782 (GMC). Air Bags2 issues
criticalAIR BAGS
CrashFiled: Oct 2024

Your airbags failed to deploy when your 2011 Equinox crashed into a guard rail while swerving to avoid an oncoming vehicle. No warning lights appeared before the crash, and the vehicle was declared a total loss. The airbag system should have activated during impact but did not.

NHTSA #: 11617523

Filed: Nov 2024

Your dashboard is displaying a "Service Air Bags" warning message. This indicates your vehicle's airbag system needs professional inspection to determine what's causing the alert. You should have this checked by a qualified technician as soon as possible, since airbags are critical safety components. The fix will likely involve diagnostic testing to identify the specific airbag system fault and any necessary repairs or component replacement.

Engine2 issues
highENGINE
Filed: Feb 2026

Your engine is burning through oil quickly—you need to add about a quart every week. Your check engine light keeps coming on for a camshaft sensor error, and even though you've replaced the sensor three times already, the light won't stay off. This suggests either an ongoing oil consumption problem in the engine itself or a persistent sensor/electrical issue that keeps triggering the warning.

Your engine is burning oil at an unusually high rate — you're losing about 1.5 quarts every 200 miles despite regular oil changes every 3,000 miles. There are no visible leaks and the low oil warning light hasn't appeared. This suggests internal engine wear or a problem with how the engine is consuming oil.

Electrical System,engine,fuel/propulsion System2 issues
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Sep 2025

While driving, your car wouldn't accelerate even though you pressed the gas pedal all the way down, and it made strange noises while jerking. The check engine light came on, and you were warned not to drive it due to potential engine damage. This issue likely involves the fuel system, ignition system, or engine sensors that need diagnostic testing and repair.

NHTSA #: 11688729
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Feb 2025

Your car is burning oil excessively and stalling out while driving, with the stability/traction control light coming on at the same time. Multiple components have failed simultaneously — the timing chain, fuel pump, and oil system — suggesting these issues may be interconnected. You'll likely need a full diagnostic of the engine, fuel system, and timing components, along with replacement of the timing chain and fuel pump.

NHTSA #: 11643435
Engine,fuel/propulsion System2 issues
highENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: May 2025

Your car's fuel pump isn't working properly, which is allowing gas to leak into the engine's crankcase (the area below the pistons). This is triggering your check engine light, stability control light, and reduced engine power warning, and it's causing your engine to shut off unexpectedly. The fuel pump will likely need to be replaced to fix this issue.

NHTSA #: 11661353
highENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Sep 2024

Your engine is consuming oil much faster than normal—you lost 3 quarts in just 1,614 miles since your last oil change, with no visible leaks. The oil level got so low that your engine stalled while you were driving, but your dashboard oil warning light never came on to alert you. This appears to be caused by faulty piston rings that may need to be replaced under a recall.

NHTSA #: 11613108
Steering2 issues
highSTEERING
Filed: Jan 2025

While turning left at low speed, your power steering suddenly stopped working with no warning lights. Your car became much harder to steer, requiring more physical effort to turn the wheel. The dealer found that the power steering assist system had failed and repaired it. The fix likely involved replacing the power steering pump, serpentine belt, or related hydraulic components.

NHTSA #: 11637702

Filed: Mar 2025

Your check engine light came on while driving, and when the dealer inspected your vehicle, they found power steering fluid leaking in the engine compartment. The dealer couldn't pinpoint exactly where the leak was coming from and advised you to keep driving for a week before returning for another inspection, but no repair was made. Finding and sealing the power steering fluid leak will likely involve inspecting the power steering hoses, connections, and pump for damage or wear.

criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Jun 2025

Your car won't accelerate properly — when you press the gas pedal, the engine doesn't respond and the car stalls, even on highways and short trips. You've replaced multiple parts and visited many mechanics, but none have been able to fix the problem. The car will restart if you turn it off, but the acceleration issue returns immediately, making it unsafe to drive.

NHTSA #: 11668009
Vehicle Speed Control, unknown Or Other1 issue
criticalVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: May 2025

Your gas pedal has stuck in the fully depressed position on multiple occasions, causing your vehicle to accelerate to unsafe speeds of up to 95 mph. This issue appears to happen when you disengage cruise control and then try to accelerate, but your dealership has been unable to identify the cause. You should have this checked immediately, as a stuck accelerator is a serious safety concern.

NHTSA #: 11662761
Vehicle Speed Control, forward Collision Avoidance1 issue
criticalVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
Filed: May 2025

Your gas pedal has stuck three times, causing your vehicle to accelerate to 95 mph on its own. The dealership and GM have been unable to explain why this happens, though you suspect it may be related to a computer glitch in the cruise control system. You've been able to avoid accidents so far, but this is a serious safety concern that needs investigation. The fix may involve diagnosing and repairing the throttle control system or cruise control electronics.

NHTSA #: 11661253
Engine And Engine Cooling1 issue
highENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Filed: Jan 2026

Your vehicle is burning through engine oil quickly and experiencing engine misfires when you accelerate. A shaft inside the engine failed at 165,000 miles, requiring engine replacement. However, the same problem returned about 4 months later, and even after cleaning the valves and exhaust, it happened again. You've also noticed smoke coming into the cabin and from the exhaust when the heater is on. The mechanic has recommended another complete engine replacement to fix the recurring issue.

NHTSA #: 11712022
Fuel System, Gasoline,engine1 issue
highFUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,ENGINE
Filed: Jul 2025

While driving at 70 MPH, your Equinox didn't accelerate properly when you pressed the gas pedal. Once the fuel tank got down to about 1/4 full, the engine jerked, made abnormal sounds, and the check engine light came on. A mechanic found that the pistons had failed and the engine was burning excessive amounts of oil. This happened around 90,000 miles.
