NHTSA Campaign: 11V552000

Component: SEAT BELTS:FRONT

GENERAL MOTORS (GM) IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2012 CHEVROLET COLORADO AND GMC CANYON VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 9, 2011, THROUGH OCTOBER 19, 2011, FOR FAILING TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NUMBER 208, "OCCUPANT CRASH PROTECTION." THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN PRODUCED WITH DRIVER SAFETY BELT BUCKLE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR TERMINALS THAT DO NOT FIT SNUGLY WITH THE CONNECTOR PINS, CAUSING THE CONNECTION TO BE INTERMITTENT.

Risk: THE LOOSE CONNECTIONS MAY CAUSE THE DRIVER TO NOT RECEIVE A VISUAL OR AUDIBLE WARNING THAT THE DRIVER SEAT BELT IS NOT FASTENED, THEREBY INCREASING THE RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.

Fix: GM WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SEAT BELT BUCKLE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR TERMINALS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE DECEMBER 7, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438 AND GMC AT 1-866-996-9463.

NHTSA Campaign: 12V594000

Component: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:HOOD:LATCH

General Motors is recalling certain model year 2010-2012 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon vehicles manufactured from November 9, 2009, through August 28, 2012, for failing to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 113, "Hood Latch System." The hood may be missing the secondary hood latch.

Risk: If the primary hood latch is not engaged, the hood could open unexpectedly. During vehicle operation, this could obstruct the view of the driver and increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: General Motors will notify owners and instruct them to inspect their vehicle for the presence of a secondary hood latch. Dealers will replace the hood on any affected vehicles, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on January 17, 2013. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC at 1-866-996-9463.

Filed: Aug 2021

Your airbag wiring runs through the hinges of your extended cab doors, and normal opening and closing of these doors can damage the wires and disable your airbags. This is a serious safety issue because your airbags may not deploy in a crash even with regular door use. The fix would likely involve rerouting the airbag wiring away from the door hinges or reinforcing the wiring to prevent damage.

Your airbag warning light came on about 3 months ago. You checked the diagnostic codes and found B0065 and B0066 errors. You've inspected all the wiring and found it in good condition, but the light remains on. The airbag system may need a professional diagnostic scan or replacement of internal sensors or modules that the codes are pointing to.

FireFiled: Jan 2022

Your truck caught fire and was completely destroyed. The fire started on the front passenger side near the engine, originating from the ground plug location, which is not waterproof. The truck was parked in a barn when the fire started after a light rain, and the fire spread to destroy the barn and other equipment inside. The repair would require investigation of the ground plug connector and potentially redesigning it to be water-resistant or relocated to a protected area.

Your hub assembly separated while you were driving, which caused you to lose steering control of your truck. You've had to replace the hub assemblies 5 times in about a year and a half—well before they should normally wear out. Before complete failure, you noticed squealing noises, which was a warning sign. The fix will involve replacing the hub assembly with a properly designed part.

Your truck makes a popping noise from the front end when you turn or brake. A Chevy dealer found that both the left and right frame rails are cracked at the factory welds, even though your truck has never been in an accident. The dealer says the frame is unsafe and the only fix is to replace the entire frame.

Your traction control warning light turns on and displays 'Traction Fault Service Stab Sys' before the engine even starts, and this happens almost every time you try to start the car. The dealer checked for error codes but found none and couldn't identify the cause. The problem appears to be intermittent but occurs in the majority of your startup attempts.

Your ABS (anti-lock brake system) warning light is on due to a faulty ABS module. According to the complaint, GM is no longer manufacturing replacement modules for this issue, which means the problem cannot be permanently fixed through normal repair channels.

Your truck won't start on the first try — you have to disconnect the negative battery terminal, wait about 10 minutes, and then reconnect it before the engine will turn over. During those 10 minutes, the security light flashes continuously. The problem gets worse if you lock the truck after it finally starts for the third time. The owner suspects the Engine Management System (EMS) needs replacement, and confirms the issue isn't with the key or ignition switch.

Your vehicle displays an unknown warning light when you start it. To get the engine running normally, you have to disconnect the battery cable, wait a few minutes, reconnect it, wait again, and then restart the engine. This happened at 47,000 miles. The fix will likely involve diagnosing what's triggering the warning light, which could require scanning the vehicle's computer system or replacing a faulty sensor.

Filed: Jun 2025

Your 2012 Chevrolet Colorado is leaking fuel due to severe corrosion of the in-tank fuel pump module. This is a serious safety concern because fuel spray near the hot exhaust system could potentially cause a fire. A similar problem was addressed in a recall for 2004–2012 Colorado models, but your vehicle's VIN may not be included—you should contact a Chevrolet dealer to verify your eligibility. The repair will likely require replacement of the corroded fuel pump module and possibly the fuel tank assembly.

Your truck won't start when the security light is flashing. Disconnecting the negative battery terminal for 10 minutes allows it to start again. Using the remote lock causes the truck to fail to start about every third time or more frequently, so you've stopped using the remote. This happens several times per week.

Filed: Oct 2018

Your dashboard keeps showing a "Service StabiliTrak" warning message. This warning indicates an issue with your electronic stability control system, which helps keep your car stable during braking and turning. The system may need diagnostic scanning to identify the root cause, which could range from a sensor issue to a computer problem.

While driving at 60 mph, your steering wheel became hard to turn and the battery warning light came on. When you checked under the hood, you found the idler pulley bracket had cracked, which also broke the serpentine belt. The dealer confirmed the damage, but the manufacturer said they couldn't help with repairs. The fix will likely require replacing the idler pulley bracket and serpentine belt.

Your truck's anti-theft system is malfunctioning, preventing you from starting the vehicle. A padlock warning light appears on the dashboard, and pressing the lock and unlock buttons on your key fob doesn't clear it — you have to repeatedly cycle the locks until the light disappears before the truck will start. This issue has occurred twice in the last four weeks. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the key fob, door lock switches, or the anti-theft security module.
