These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

Risk: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver air bag. On X5 and X6 vehicles, only the inflator will be replaced. All repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 11, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

NHTSA Campaign: 17V605000

Component: AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2006-2010 BMW X3 2.5i, X3 3.0i and X3 xDrive30i Sports Activity Vehicles. The front passenger seat occupant detection mat that determines if, and how, the passenger frontal air bag should deploy in a crash may fatigue and develop cracks which could lead to a system failure.

Risk: Should the system fail, in the event of a crash, the front passenger air bag would be deactivated, increasing the risk of personal injury.

Fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger seat occupant detection mat, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters were mailed on November 27, 2017. A second notification letter will be sent when parts are available. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL:CRANKCASE (PCV)

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2008-2011 128i and 2007-2011 328i, 328xi, 328i xDrive, 525i, 525xi, 528i, 528xi, 530i, 530xi, X3 3.0si, X3 xDrive30i, X5 xDrive30i, Z4 3.0i, Z4 3.0si and Z4 sDrive30i vehicles. The heater for the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve may short circuit.

Risk: An electrical short can cause the parts within the PCV valve to melt, increasing the risk of a fire, even when the vehicle is not in use.

Fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the PCV valve heater, free of charge. Interim letters were mailed on November 27, 2017. Owners will receive a second notification by the end of October 2018. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

While driving at highway speeds, your engine's coolant temperature warning light came on along with other warning lights. You pulled over and noticed smoke coming from under the hood and smelled burning plastic. You safely exited the vehicle and used water to prevent a fire. Your car is part of a recall for engine cooling issues, but the replacement parts weren't available when you brought it in for service. The underlying problem wasn't diagnosed or repaired at the dealer. This repair will likely involve replacing the faulty engine cooling component identified in the recall once the part becomes available.

Filed: Jul 2025

After your 2007 BMW X3 had a Takata airbag recall repair performed at BMW of Manhattan, an airbag warning light appeared on your dashboard—even though no warning lights were present before the service. The dealership says the warning light is unrelated to their work and is your responsibility to fix, but the problem only started after they serviced the airbag system. You're concerned about the safety implications and want the dealer to perform a diagnostic scan at no cost to determine whether their installation caused the issue. Resolving this will likely require the dealership to diagnose the SRS system with specialized equipment and potentially reinstall or replace airbag components.

CrashFiled: May 2023

Your 2007 BMW X3 was involved in a T-bone crash at approximately 40 MPH, and the front driver and passenger airbags failed to deploy during impact. Both the driver and front passenger sustained significant injuries including head, neck, back, and internal injuries as a result. A police report was filed and the vehicle was towed; BMW was notified of the failure. Repairing this issue would require BMW to diagnose why the airbag system failed to trigger and replace or repair the faulty airbag control module and possibly the airbags themselves.

Your car was subject to a recall notice in April 2022 for a PCV valve issue, but no fix was available at that time. Your vehicle caught fire in your driveway on January 14, 2023, and the fire spread to your garage. Two weeks after the fire, on January 31, 2023, you received notice that a fix had become available. Addressing this recall promptly if your vehicle is still in use is critical to prevent similar incidents.

Your engine is overheating and stalling without any visible cause, even though you maintain the car regularly. You've noticed a burning plastic or electrical smell, and most recently while driving on the freeway at 70 mph, your temperature gauge spiked into the red zone within seconds, triggering loud beeping before the engine lost power completely — leaving you stranded without power steering on a busy road. After sitting for 20 minutes in hot weather, the car mysteriously started again and ran normally. The fix will likely involve a diagnostic scan to identify the overheating source, which could be a failing thermostat, water pump, coolant sensor, or electrical system malfunction.

When you turned on the seat warmers in your 2007 BMW X3, the left edge of the driver's seat became dangerously hot and caused a burn on your hand within minutes. The seat was actively burning, which caused you to swerve while driving your daughter to school. Less than two weeks later, while your daughter was stopped at a stop sign, the car suddenly spun out of control in circles, nearly causing an accident. Your 2007 BMW X3 has multiple safety issues: Takata airbag recalls show 6 recalls on your vehicle, but your BMW dealer says they don't see them in their system and won't address them—leaving you uncertain whether your airbags will deploy in a crash. Your BMW X3 suddenly accelerates on its own while stopped, forcing you to shift into neutral and press the gas pedal to regain control. This has happened multiple times and creates a serious safety hazard. Your mechanic found no diagnostic trouble codes when scanning the computer, making the cause difficult to pinpoint. The fix may involve inspecting the throttle body, fuel injectors, or the engine control system for mechanical or electrical issues.

Your 2007 BMW X3 is producing smoke from under the hood during startup and has been stalling while driving, with the check engine light on. A mechanic diagnosed that the engine needs replacement, and you were notified of a recall (Campaign 22V119000), but the dealer refused to complete the recall repair due to these failures. Your BMW's engine light came on after the dealership completed a recall repair. When you returned, the dealership wanted to charge you $100 to turn off the light instead of fixing it under the recall. You used a code reader and found the light was caused by a part that wasn't replaced during the recall service. The dealership has not returned your calls about this issue.
