These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

Risk: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver air bag. On X5 and X6 vehicles, only the inflator will be replaced. All repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 11, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

NHTSA Campaign: 17V605000

Component: AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2006-2010 BMW X3 2.5i, X3 3.0i and X3 xDrive30i Sports Activity Vehicles. The front passenger seat occupant detection mat that determines if, and how, the passenger frontal air bag should deploy in a crash may fatigue and develop cracks which could lead to a system failure.

Risk: Should the system fail, in the event of a crash, the front passenger air bag would be deactivated, increasing the risk of personal injury.

Fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger seat occupant detection mat, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters were mailed on November 27, 2017. A second notification letter will be sent when parts are available. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

NHTSA Campaign: 17V683000

Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL:CRANKCASE (PCV)

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2008-2011 128i and 2007-2011 328i, 328xi, 328i xDrive, 525i, 525xi, 528i, 528xi, 530i, 530xi, X3 3.0si, X3 xDrive30i, X5 xDrive30i, Z4 3.0i, Z4 3.0si and Z4 sDrive30i vehicles. The heater for the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve may short circuit.

Risk: An electrical short can cause the parts within the PCV valve to melt, increasing the risk of a fire, even when the vehicle is not in use.

Fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the PCV valve heater, free of charge. Interim letters were mailed on November 27, 2017. Owners will receive a second notification by the end of October 2018. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Your car has stalled suddenly multiple times over the past 4 months. After the mechanic replaced the fuel pump once, the stalling happened again, and a second mechanic inspection found no problems — yet the car stalled again while you were driving on the highway. This recurring issue needs proper diagnosis to identify the root cause, as it could be related to the fuel system or engine components.

You drove your car 3 hours to a BMW dealership for scheduled recall work with no problems. By the end of the day, the dealership called to say your car was overheating and not drivable, claiming the water pump wasn't working. You're concerned the dealership may have caused this issue during the recall service, since your car ran fine when you dropped it off. Resolving this will likely require the dealership to inspect the water pump and cooling system to determine what happened during the service.

Your fuel injectors have started leaking and become faulty, causing your engine to misfire. BMW issued a recall for similar problems on other 2009 X3s with the same engine, but the company has refused to cover your car under that recall. You'll likely need to have the fuel injectors inspected, cleaned, or replaced to fix the misfiring.

Your car has repeatedly stalled on the freeway, displaying a fuel pump warning message. The first mechanic found the tank empty, but after refueling and a fuel tank sensor replacement, the problem returned multiple times over several months. The issue appears to be a faulty fuel tank sensor giving incorrect gas level readings, causing your car to shut down even when fuel may be present.

Your 2009 BMW X3 is subject to a recall (Campaign 22V119000) for an engine cooling issue, but the needed repair part hasn't been available. Your engine started overheating, limiting you to only a few miles of driving, and you noticed smoke coming from under the hood and the exhaust. You've stopped driving the vehicle because of concern it might catch fire, and the manufacturer has taken longer than reasonable to provide the recall repair.

Filed: Feb 2024

Your drive shaft suddenly snapped and fell off while you were driving on the highway, without any warning lights beforehand. The broken shaft damaged your oil pan and coolant hoses. This is extremely dangerous as it can cause sudden loss of power and control, especially in heavy traffic.

Your engine RPM suddenly revved up on its own while driving, followed by the vehicle slowing down without you pressing the brake. A BMW dealer diagnosed that the transfer case motor module disconnected, which caused excessive strain on the drivetrain. The vehicle was not repaired at that time. Fixing this will likely involve replacing or reconnecting the transfer case motor module.

While driving your 2009 BMW X3 at about 20 mph, white smoke came from the engine compartment, followed by sparks and a fire that started under the hood. The fire department had to extinguish it, and your vehicle was deemed a total loss. You had also received a recall notice related to the engine and cooling system around the time this happened. Addressing this would likely require inspection and replacement of whatever engine or cooling component failed and caused the fire.

Your car has two open recalls issued in November 2017: one for defective blower motor wiring and another for a faulty PCV valve heater. As of September 2018, BMW has not yet made a repair available for either issue. This unresolved recall status may negatively affect your vehicle's resale value. The fix will require BMW to provide and install replacement components for the blower motor wiring harness and PCV valve heater assembly once parts and service procedures become available.

Your heated seat suddenly overheated while you were driving in heavy traffic, burning through the seat cover and melting it into your pants, causing burns to your leg and fingertip. The seat became so hot that it created a hole in the seat material and damaged your clothing. BMW's only solution was to disconnect the seat heater, which you found unacceptable.
