NHTSA Campaign: 17V605000

Component: AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2006-2010 BMW X3 2.5i, X3 3.0i and X3 xDrive30i Sports Activity Vehicles. The front passenger seat occupant detection mat that determines if, and how, the passenger frontal air bag should deploy in a crash may fatigue and develop cracks which could lead to a system failure.

Risk: Should the system fail, in the event of a crash, the front passenger air bag would be deactivated, increasing the risk of personal injury.

Fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger seat occupant detection mat, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters were mailed on November 27, 2017. A second notification letter will be sent when parts are available. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

NHTSA Campaign: 08V384000

Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL

BMW IS RECALLING 200,000 MY 2006 3 SERIES SPORT SEAT, MY 2004-2006 5 SERIES STANDARD AND SPORT SEAT, AND MY 2004-2006 X3 PASSENGER VEHICLES. DEPENDING ON THE MANNER AND FREQUENCY OF THE FRONT PASSENGER'S ENTRY AND EXIT, SMALL CRACKS HAVE DEVELOPED IN THE MAT. IF THIS OCCURS, THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAGS, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE HEAD PROTECTION SYSTEM, WILL BE DEACTIVATED AND THE AIR BAG WARNING LAMP AS WELL AS THE PASSENGER AIR BAG "ON-OFF" LAMP WILL BE ILLUMINATED.

Risk: IN THIS SITUATION THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY EVEN IF A SUFFICIENTLY SEVERE ACCIDENT WOULD OCCUR AND OCCUPANT PROTECTION PROVIDED BY THE SYSTEM WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REWORK THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT SENSOR MAT SO THAT EXTERNAL FORCE APPLICATION TO THE SEAT DOES NOT CAUSE A CRACK TO THE MAT. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 6, 2008. BMW WILL ALSO EXTEND THE WARRANTY ON THESE VEHICLES TO 10 YEARS FROM FIRST REGISTRATION WITHOUT ANY MILEAGE LIMIT. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-525-7417.

Your 2006 BMW X3 was involved in a rear-end collision at 30 MPH, and the passenger-side airbag failed to deploy while all other airbags worked properly. You suffered a migraine from the impact. This happened even though the dealer had recently serviced an airbag recall on your vehicle.

Your vehicle has an unrepaired safety recall affecting the front passenger seat occupant detection mat. Over time, this mat can develop small cracks from repeated passenger entry and exit, which may break the electrical connections that tell the airbag system to activate. If this happens, your front passenger airbags (except the head protection airbag) will stop working. The repair typically involves replacing the occupant detection mat.

Your passenger seat airbag sensor mat is on back order from BMW, and you've been waiting over 6 months for it to arrive. Until it's replaced, the passenger airbag system may not function properly in a crash. The dealer has said they'll contact you when the part becomes available.

Your front passenger airbag system is malfunctioning — the "Passenger Airbag Off" warning light keeps turning on and off, even when someone is sitting in the seat. This happens because the occupancy sensor isn't consistently detecting that the seat is occupied, which means the airbag may not deploy properly in a crash. The sensor or wiring connection likely needs to be inspected and repaired to ensure the airbag system works correctly.

Your vehicle was in a front-end collision on April 15 with severe damage requiring over $10,000 in repairs. However, the airbag failed to deploy during the crash.

Your airbag warning light is on, and there's a known recall for airbag sensors on your vehicle. When you took it to the dealer, they refused to diagnose or repair the problem without charging you $170 upfront, despite the recall. Since this is a safety system covered by recall, the diagnostic work and repair should be performed at no cost to you.

Your front passenger air bag warning light came on while you were driving at 30 mph. The light indicates a potential problem with the passenger air bag system that should be diagnosed by a BMW dealer. Your 2006 BMW X3 was part of a safety recall for airbags, but the dealer initially said parts weren't available to fix it. Eventually the airbag mats were replaced, but the airbag warning light came back on while driving. BMW says the recall repair is complete and won't cover any further repairs for this issue.

Your airbag occupancy detection mat under the seat may have already been serviced, but the original mat from 2005 is still in place with no documentation of what was done or how the problem was prevented. The dealer said the mat only needs replacing if it shows visible cracks, but they've started your warranty coverage from the inspection date rather than the original purchase date. You may want to request written confirmation of what repair was performed and clarification on your actual warranty period.

Within two minutes of driving with the heated seats on, you notice a strong burning smell that intensifies until you feel sharp pain on your left hip — the heated seat is burning your skin. The pain is severe enough that you have to lift yourself off the seat while driving, creating a dangerous situation that forces you to pull over immediately. When you turn off the heated seats, the pain and smell stop, but you find a clear burn hole in both the seat and your pants, with lingering pain in your hip for the rest of the day. The heating element in the seat is overheating and creating a fire hazard that caused burns to your body.

Your driver's side seat heater overheated and burned through the leather seat, causing burns to the driver's left hip while the car was in motion. This nearly caused an accident. While driving with the heated seat set to its highest setting, you noticed a strong burning smell. You pulled over and found the heated seat had burned through the leather seat and also damaged your coat. The seat malfunctioned and overheated without catching fire, but caused burn damage to both the seat and your clothing. Repair will likely require replacement of the heated seat element and reupholstering of the seat.

When you turn on the heated seat, it may overheat and burn through the leather seat material within a couple of minutes, causing a burning smell and potentially burning your leg. Your airbag warning light is on due to a faulty clock spring in the steering column. You may notice that your horn doesn't work, the steering wheel buttons are unresponsive, and the paddle shifters aren't functioning. The diagnostic fault codes indicate an open or high-resistance circuit in the driver's airbag squib (firing mechanism). Fixing this will likely require replacing the clock spring assembly in your steering column.

While driving, your coolant hoses came loose and your radiator cracked open, causing coolant fluid to spray onto your windshield. Your X3 has experienced multiple electrical problems starting when the car was relatively new. The radio volume would suddenly jump when you adjusted it, the air conditioning began malfunctioning (possibly due to a refrigerant leak), and the rear window operates unexpectedly.
