NHTSA Campaign: 08V384000

Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL

BMW IS RECALLING 200,000 MY 2006 3 SERIES SPORT SEAT, MY 2004-2006 5 SERIES STANDARD AND SPORT SEAT, AND MY 2004-2006 X3 PASSENGER VEHICLES. DEPENDING ON THE MANNER AND FREQUENCY OF THE FRONT PASSENGER'S ENTRY AND EXIT, SMALL CRACKS HAVE DEVELOPED IN THE MAT. IF THIS OCCURS, THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAGS, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE HEAD PROTECTION SYSTEM, WILL BE DEACTIVATED AND THE AIR BAG WARNING LAMP AS WELL AS THE PASSENGER AIR BAG "ON-OFF" LAMP WILL BE ILLUMINATED.

Risk: IN THIS SITUATION THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY EVEN IF A SUFFICIENTLY SEVERE ACCIDENT WOULD OCCUR AND OCCUPANT PROTECTION PROVIDED BY THE SYSTEM WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REWORK THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT SENSOR MAT SO THAT EXTERNAL FORCE APPLICATION TO THE SEAT DOES NOT CAUSE A CRACK TO THE MAT. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 6, 2008. BMW WILL ALSO EXTEND THE WARRANTY ON THESE VEHICLES TO 10 YEARS FROM FIRST REGISTRATION WITHOUT ANY MILEAGE LIMIT. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-525-7417.

Your 2004 BMW X3 was involved in a crash at 60 mph with a tow truck, and the front airbags failed to deploy. You suffered a head injury and body soreness requiring medical attention. An airbag specialist found that the airbag was not properly connected to the system. The dealer claimed the airbags didn't deploy due to minimal impact, but your insurance company declared the vehicle a total loss.

Your airbag warning light is staying on, which indicates a problem with the occupant sensor system. This sensor is supposed to detect whether a passenger is in the seat and control whether the airbags activate in a crash. A faulty sensor could either keep the airbags active all the time or prevent them from deploying when needed. You should have the airbag system inspected and the occupant sensor repaired or replaced as soon as possible.

Your airbags failed to deploy during a front-end collision when your vehicle crashed into a tow truck. The airbags should have inflated to protect you during the impact, but they did not. The vehicle was declared a total loss. This issue may require diagnostic testing of the airbag control module and sensor system to determine why the airbags didn't activate.

Your BMW has an open recall (08V384) for the front passenger seat occupant detection mat in the airbag system, but BMW says they don't have parts available and aren't ordering them. You've been told to call back in two months with no clear timeline for when the repair will be completed. This recall also includes a warranty coverage extension that hasn't been applied. The fix will require BMW to source and install the replacement occupant detection mat once parts become available.

Your driver's side seat warmer became dangerously hot when turned on, burning your skin and scorching the leather seat cover. This indicates a malfunction in the seat heating element that caused it to overheat. The seat warmer will likely need to be replaced or the heating element repaired to restore safe operation.

Your driver's side seat heater gets dangerously hot and can burn through clothing and potentially burn skin if left on. This is a safety hazard that needs immediate attention. The seat heater element likely needs to be replaced or the heating system needs to be repaired to prevent burns.

Filed: Jan 2018

Your driver's seat heater gets dangerously hot on the high setting and can burn your skin through your clothes, particularly in the lower left lumbar area and seat bottom. A service shop found that the seat heater grid is broken, causing temperatures to run about 40 degrees higher than normal in the left leg area. This is an ongoing problem, not a one-time issue. The fix will likely involve replacing the faulty seat heater element or the entire heating grid assembly.

FireFiled: Nov 2017

Your vehicle unexpectedly caught fire while being driven, and the fire was determined to be electrical in nature, resulting in the car being totaled. The owner believes the 2004 model year should be included in a recall for this issue. The repair would likely involve a complete electrical system inspection and replacement of faulty wiring or electrical components.

Your xenon headlight wiring is deteriorating and breaking apart inside the sealed headlight compartment. You'll first notice the headlight flickering, and then it stops working completely within about a week. The wire insulation is cracking on its own, even though the compartment has never been opened since the car left the factory, and this may affect both headlights. Repairing this will likely require replacing the xenon headlight assembly or the wiring harness inside the headlight unit.

highEXTERIOR LIGHTING
Filed: Mar 2019

When you replaced a burnt-out headlight bulb, you discovered that the wiring coating on both the right and left xenon headlight systems is brittle and falling off, leaving exposed wires in some areas. This exposed wiring could pose a fire risk and currently requires electrical tape to protect it. The wiring insulation appears to be deteriorating prematurely on this model.

Filed: Nov 2018

The insulation covering the wires inside your headlight assembly is cracking and peeling off, which is causing an electrical short. This short blows the fuse for your headlights while you're driving. The fix will likely involve replacing the headlight wiring harness or the entire headlight assembly to restore proper insulation.

Your car suddenly accelerated on its own while you were stopped at a red light, and the brakes didn't stop it even when you pressed hard on the pedal.
