Safety RecallFREE FIX AT DEALER
Mar 2014

NHTSA Campaign: 14V526000

Component: HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2005-2008 Ford Escape hybrid electric vehicles manufactured October 13, 2003, to June 20, 2008, and 2006-2008 Mercury Mariner hybrid electric vehicles manufactured June 10, 2005, to June 20, 2008. The coolant pump for the hybrid system may fail resulting in the hybrid electronics overheating.

Risk: If the hybrid electronics system overheats, it may shut down the powertrain, resulting in a stall-like condition, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the original Motor Electronics Coolant (MEC) Pump with an improved brushless pump, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on October 27, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 14S19.

NHTSA Campaign: 15E045000

Component: SUSPENSION:FRONT:WHEEL BEARING

The Timken Company (Timken) is recalling certain aftermarket front wheel bearings, part number 510072, sold from January 22, 2015, to May 21, 2015, to be used as service parts on 2001-2012 Ford Escape, 2001-2011 Mazda Tribute, and 2005-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles. The affected wheel bearings have incorrect dimensions of a 42mm bore, 76mm outer dimension, and 39mm width, instead of a 42mm bore, 78mm outer dimension and a 45mm width.

Risk: Use of an incorrectly sized wheel bearing can adversely affect the braking and steering of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Timken has begun notifying distributors who will offer purchasers replacement wheel bearings, free of charge. The recall began on May 21, 2015. Owners may contact Timken customer service at 1-866-984-6536.

NHTSA Campaign: 15V606000

Component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:FLOOR SHIFT

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2008 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured March 31, 2001, to September 1, 2009. The affected vehicles are equipped with either a 2.3L or 3.0L engine and have had their CD4E transmission replaced with remanufactured one that was rebuilt between June 11, 2015 through July 15, 2015. These service repair part transmissions have a shift lever bolt that may not be properly tightened. As a result, the shift control lever could disengage from the transmission without warning.

Risk: If the shift lever disengages from the transmission, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the gear selection indicator may show that the transmission is in the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not actually be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.

Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the transmissions and either tighten the manual shift lever bolt or replace the manual shift lever assembly. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 23, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S28.

NHTSA Campaign: 05V520000

Component: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:MOTOR

ON CERTAIN TRUCKS, PASSENGER CARS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR MAY HAVE BEEN PRODUCED WITHOUT GREASE BEING APPLIED TO THE OUTPUT SHAFT GEAR.

Risk: AFTER A PERIOD OF CONTINUOUS USE ON THE HIGH SPEED SETTING, LACK OF GREASE ON THE OUTPUT SHAFT GEAR MAY CAUSE THE GEAR TO DISTORT OR FRACTURE DURING OPERATION RESULTING IN A LOSS OF WIPER FUNCTION. INOPERATIVE WIPERS UNDER INCLEMENT WEATHER CONDITIONS COULD CAUSE A CRASH DUE TO IMPAIRED VISIBILITY.

Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE WIPER MOTOR FOR THE PRESENCE OF GREASE AND GREASE THE WIPER MOTOR GEARS IF NECESSARY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 22, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673 OR LINCOLN/MERCURY AT 1-800-521-4140.

highVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Filed: May 2023

While driving at 40 mph and pressing the accelerator pedal, your vehicle lost power instead of speeding up. The accelerator pedal also got stuck in the floored position. You were able to safely pull into a parking lot and shut off the engine, but the vehicle was never diagnosed or repaired.

NHTSA #: 11523503

Your accelerator pedal is sticking when you press it down, requiring you to keep pushing to get it to release. This problem happens more often in cold weather. Your vehicle has no warning lights, and the issue hasn't been diagnosed or repaired yet. The fix will likely involve cleaning or replacing the accelerator pedal assembly and its connecting components.

NHTSA #: 11497035
highVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Filed: Oct 2022

Your gas pedal sticks and won't respond when the engine is cold, making it difficult to accelerate in traffic. You may need to pump the pedal multiple times to get it unstuck, and the problem typically goes away once the engine warms up. This appears to be a known issue affecting multiple model years. The fix will likely involve inspecting and cleaning or replacing the throttle body or accelerator cable components.

NHTSA #: 11491231
Engine2 issues
criticalENGINE
Filed: Jan 2025

Your car's idler pulley has failed multiple times, with the mounting bolt breaking where it connects to the timing cover. When this happens, your serpentine belt fails or comes off, causing your power steering, alternator, and water pump to stop working—making the car hard to steer and risking engine shutdown. This has occurred four times in two years, and replacement pulleys only last 4,000–5,000 miles before failing again, even after replacing the power steering pump and air conditioning compressor. The fix typically involves replacing the idler pulley and its mounting bolt, though a redesigned pulley or permanent solution may be needed to prevent recurrence.

NHTSA #: 11638533

FireFiled: May 2023

Your check engine light came on while pulling into your driveway, followed by smoke coming from under the hood. The smoke got darker and you saw flames in the engine compartment, so you moved away from the vehicle. The fire spread to the front end and dashboard before the fire department helped extinguish it. The vehicle was a total loss and was never diagnosed or repaired.

NHTSA #: 11521257
Steering2 issues
criticalSTEERING
Filed: Oct 2024

Your power steering suddenly stopped working while making a sharp turn, forcing you to drive without power steering assistance and causing a near-collision. Warning lights appeared for "power steering service" and a wrench symbol, but mechanics found no diagnostic codes. You've been told you need a power steering module and rack and pinion, but both parts are discontinued, leaving you unable to find compatible replacements at an affordable price. The repair will likely require sourcing replacement steering components, which may be unavailable for your vehicle year.

NHTSA #: 11619631
highSTEERING
Filed: May 2025

While driving on the highway, your steering pulled to the left and warning lights appeared on the dash, including a wrench icon and a "service steering system soon" message. The dealer found a corroded electrical connection in the wiring harness connected to the electronic steering rack assembly was causing the problem. The repair involved replacing the corroded connector harness, which resolved the issue.

CrashFiled: May 2024

Your Escape's rear shock tower rusted through and separated from the frame, causing you to lose control while driving. This happened on both the passenger side first, then the driver side about a year later with no warning signs beforehand. A repair shop indicated this is a known recurring problem across multiple model years of Escapes. Fixing this will require welding the shock tower back to the frame or replacing the rusted component.

NHTSA #: 11589912
highSUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
Filed: Jun 2023

Your 2006 Escape's rear suspension support rails and inner fender areas are made of low-quality pressed steel that rusts quickly, especially where road salt and debris get trapped. You may notice rust holes and structural separation in these areas, which can weaken the frame over time—particularly concerning since your hybrid carries a heavy battery between these rusted rails. Repairs typically involve welding or replacing the corroded steel components, though severe rust may make the vehicle unsafe to repair.

NHTSA #: 11527007
Suspension,structure,wheels2 issues
highSUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,WHEELS
Filed: Mar 2024

Your car's rear suspension components, including shocks and mounts, have extensive rust damage that repair shops say cannot be fixed. As a result, your vehicle bounces excessively when driven, which is wearing out the suspension bearings, springs, and tires prematurely. You may also notice rust throughout the body panels and wheel wells. Addressing this issue will likely require replacement of the rusted rear shock absorbers and mounts, and possibly inspection of other suspension components for damage.

NHTSA #: 11579065
highSUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,WHEELS
Filed: Nov 2022

Your rear shock mounts may rust and fail prematurely, leaving only the spring to support the suspension. When this happens, your vehicle's handling and safety are compromised, as the shock absorber can no longer control wheel movement. The owner experienced this failure while driving on a bridge and believes Ford is aware of the defect but hasn't addressed it. Fixing this issue will require replacing the rusted shock mounts and likely the shock absorbers themselves.

Hybrid Propulsion System2 issues
highHYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Jun 2023

Your 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid stalled while you were driving. A mechanic found that the brushless Motor Electronics Coolant (MEC) pump had failed and needed replacement. This issue is related to a known NHTSA recall campaign. Fixing this will involve replacing the MEC pump.

NHTSA #: 11524998

Filed: Feb 2023

Your Escape Hybrid is having trouble starting—the engine cranks for about two seconds and then stalls out. A warning light has appeared on your dashboard telling you to pull over. This has happened multiple times, and an independent mechanic suggested checking for recalls but didn't diagnose or fix the issue. The problem started around 157,000 miles. Getting a diagnostic scan at a Ford dealer could identify whether this is a fuel system issue, battery/electrical problem, or hybrid system malfunction that needs repair.

Filed: Jan 2023

Your rear axle and entire rear end assembly appear to be failing prematurely despite relatively low mileage, which wasn't caused by normal wear and tear. If the rear end were to fail suddenly at highway speeds, you could lose control of the vehicle—and you're concerned about how many other 2006 Escapes with the same problem might still be on the road. The fix will likely involve inspection and replacement of rear axle components and suspension parts.
