Open Safety Recalls (3)
NHTSA Campaign: 19V389000
Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2012-2020 Volkswagen Passat and 2018-2019 Atlas vehicles. The blocking cap disabling the adjustment of the headlight's horizontal aim may not have been installed. As such, these vehicles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
Risk: Without the blocking cap, the headlight aim can be adjusted out of specification, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, as necessary, block the headlight horizontal adjustment, free of charge. The recall began July 16, 2019. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 94L9.
NHTSA Campaign: 19V218000
Component: AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2019 Atlas and 2020 Passat vehicles. An incorrect driver and/or front passenger side impact air bag may have been installed.
Risk: In an event of a side impact crash, an incorrect side airbag may not deploy as intended, increasing the risk of injury.
Fix: Volkswagen has inspected and replaced the side air bags, free of charge. The recall was completed in April 2019. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69Y8.
NHTSA Campaign: 20V533000
Component: AIR BAGS:PASSENGER SIDE FRONTAL:CUSHION
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2020 Passat vehicles. The passenger frontal air bag may have been folded incorrectly affecting its deployment force. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
Risk: An incorrectly folded air bag can deploy with too much force, increasing the risk of injury.
Fix: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag, free of charge. The recall began October 14, 2020. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-888-241-2289. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69AY.
Owner-Reported Issues (15 of 15)
Unknown Or Other,engine →2 issues
Your 2020 Passat's Check Engine Light keeps coming back with a secondary air injection system fault code (P0491). You've had the air injection pump replaced, but the light returned within 24 hours. Multiple repair shops have given conflicting diagnoses—one says the pump was fine and blamed a stuck valve instead, while another suggested the problem might be in the cylinder head itself. The underlying cause remains unresolved despite multiple repair attempts.

Your park assist system is not working, and you're experiencing a loss of engine power when turning left or right. This could indicate an electrical or sensor issue affecting both the parking assistance feature and engine performance during turns. A diagnostic scan of your engine and electrical systems would be needed to identify the root cause.

Engine →2 issues
Your oil pressure sensor is failing, which is causing abnormally high oil pressure in your engine. This excessive pressure is damaging your valve cover and oil pan, causing them to leak and drain your oil. If this continues, you risk engine damage from running low on oil.

Your car developed a head gasket failure at 53,000 miles, just 3,000 miles beyond the factory warranty limit. You had to pay $4,800 out of pocket for the repair at a VW dealership. This is a significant engine issue that required a major repair shortly after purchase.

Unknown Or Other →2 issues
Your car's engine revs up and makes noise like it's trying to accelerate, but the vehicle won't actually speed up. You've taken it to the dealership multiple times, but they haven't identified the cause. This could involve a transmission issue, fuel system problem, or engine sensor malfunction that needs further diagnostic testing.

Your 2020 Passat came with CarNet connected services included at purchase, and it worked fine until 2024 when the connection stopped working. After taking it to the dealer for diagnosis, Volkswagen informed them that your model year is no longer eligible for CarNet service and can no longer use this feature. You're concerned that Volkswagen is removing a service you paid for at the time of purchase.

Air Bags, forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
Your car's airbag warning light has turned on and stayed on, and you're seeing error messages saying the front collision warning system (Front Assist) is unavailable. The dashboard is also alerting you that maintenance is needed. This likely requires a diagnostic scan to identify the specific fault in the airbag or safety system and may involve repairing or replacing faulty sensors, wiring, or control modules.

Air Bags,seat Belts →1 issue
Your daughter was in an accident that totaled the car. The airbags did not deploy during the crash, and the seat belt was not tight enough to provide proper restraint. This is a critical safety issue that should be reported to Volkswagen and NHTSA, as both the airbag system and seat belt pretensioner may need inspection or replacement.

Service Brakes →1 issue
Your brakes feel very weak and unresponsive. When you pressed hard on the brake pedal, it took about 4 seconds for the car to stop, and it kept moving even with firm pressure—nearly causing you to hit the car in front of you. The issue could be with the brakes, tires, or both working together. You should have your brake system inspected immediately, including the brake pads, rotors, and tire condition.

Steering,air Bags,forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
Your steering wheel controls and horn have stopped working, which suggests an issue with the steering wheel control module. While you haven't been in an accident, this same part was recalled on earlier Volkswagen models, and the replacement part (VW recall VWP-18-11) is designed to fit 2016-2022 vehicles including yours. The fix will involve replacing the steering wheel control module with the updated recall part.

Fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your car lost power while driving and the EPC warning light came on, forcing you to have it towed 36 miles to a dealership. The fuel injector #3 needed to be replaced, which cost $1,085 even with a discount. Since your warranty had expired just 3,000 miles earlier, you had to pay the full repair cost out of pocket.

Steering,electrical System,air Bags →1 issue
Your clock spring — the component that allows your steering wheel controls and horn to work — has failed after only a year of ownership. As a result, your horn doesn't work, you can't use any steering wheel-mounted controls, and your airbag warning light is on. The clock spring will likely need to be replaced to restore these functions and clear the airbag warning.

Engine And Engine Cooling →1 issue
Your 2020 Passat has experienced multiple warning lights and error messages, including EPC, Adaptive Cruise Control, low oil pressure, and "Front Assist Error" warnings. You've noticed abnormal engine sounds, unexpected vehicle movement, unintended swerving, and vibration while driving. The dealer found a fractured brake caliper and previously replaced the thermostat for a coolant error, but the problems have persisted despite multiple service visits.

Forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
Your car's Front Assist forward collision warning system has been activating and applying the brakes on its own even when there are no vehicles or objects in front of, behind, or beside you. This caused your car to come to a complete stop while driving on the street during clear weather conditions. Volkswagen has acknowledged the issue and says engineers are working on a fix, though they've told you the car is safe to drive. A software update or sensor recalibration may be needed to resolve the false collision detection.

Wheels →1 issue
While driving on the highway with a child in the vehicle, you heard a pop from your driver's side rear tire and found it completely flat with a large hole in the rim. The next day, an inspection confirmed there was a large piece of glass embedded in the tire that caused the damage. The repair will likely involve replacing the tire and possibly the rim if the damage is too severe to patch.
