SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:MASTER CYLINDER
Tenneco Automotive (Tenneco) is recalling certain Beck/Arnley Master Cylinders, part number 072-9831, sold as aftermarket or replacement parts for 2004-2018 Volkswagen Jetta, and 2012-2019 Volkswagen Beetle vehicles. The fluid seal crimp on the master cylinder may be insufficient, causing brake fluid to leak or the cylinder to come apart.
Fix: Beck/Arnley will notify the distributors that sold the master cylinders and will work with the distributors to notify the end users. Affected master cylinders will be exchanged for a new master cylinder (part number 072-9990), free of charge. The recall began October 30, 2020. Owners may contact Tenneco customer service at 1-800-625-9319.
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2009-2010 Volkswagen Jetta A5 Sedan, 2009 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen, Eos, GTI, Rabbit and Audi A3 vehicles, and 2010 Volkswagen Golf A6 vehicles. The Antilock Brake System (ABS) control unit may fail during ABS or Electronic Stability Control (ESC) activation, possibly causing a loss of vehicle control.
Fix: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will update the ABS control module software to improve the module's self-testing abilities. Any module that fails the new diagnostic test will be replaced. These repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began February 2017. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298.

Received an ABS Break light flashing on my dash board. Went to the Valley Volkswagen dealer in Staunton, VA and confirmed the ABS Module needs to be replaced. This is the same part that was on Volkswagen recall 45F2/45F5 ABS and stability control becomes inoperative. With a warning A loss of vehicle control can increase the risk of a crash. This is a safety issue and needs to be repaired as soon as possible. I'm driving an vehicle that is unsafe to drive. Please include my VIN # in this recall. Thanks
The contact owns a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated while driving 50 MPH, the ABS warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed with ABS module failure. The contact was informed that the ABS module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V913000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic, Electronic Stability Control). The failure mileage was approximately 59,000.
The contact owns a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 MPH, the ABS warning light illuminated and remained illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the ABS module, stabilizer links, and carbon manifold needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 55,000. While the owner does not expect VW to pay for the stabilizer links or carbon manifold repairs, they do expect the ABS module to be covered because it was the same faulty module which was in all the other 2009 and 2010 Jettas which were recalled previously. This specific vehicle was, I believe, limited to 1,000 vehicles as it is a limited edition version of the 2010 VW Jetta. It does, however, have the same ABS module as the 2010 Jettas with the open recall. VW Corporate as well as Platinum VW in Hicksville were informed about the recall for 45F2 which recalled the ABS module on most VW Jettas from 2009 to 2010. We were told that our vehicle, for unknown reasons, was not part of that recall. Mind you, this is DESPITE having the same exact failure of the ABS module and Traction Control as the regular 2010 VW Jettas We got the vehicle repaired and had to pay a very large amount of money to replace and repair the module which should have been covered under the recall. We should not be penalized because we have a more limited edition of a vehicle, please help, thank you! I've attached the invoices and payment slips from VW and Eagle Nest Motors which analyzed and repaired the vehicle.
My ABS system light has been on, but I haven't had the funds to take care of it. I inherited the car after my daughter passed away, so I don't know how long it's been on. I was just told by my mechanic that there was a recall for this very issue. I'm not in a position to pay what they're asking, but it seems like I shouldn't have to since there was a recall for this. I don't know why your website says there are no recalls for my car, but I feel I fall in this category for the ABS recall. I had a woman pull out in front of me and my car's system didn't work

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE LOCAL DEALER SCHUMACHER VOLKSWAGON LOCATED 3720 NORTHLAKE BLVD SUITE B, PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL 33403 AND THE MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER 16V913000(SERVICE BRAKES). THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE LISTED IN THE RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 76,000.

THE DEALER CONFIRMED THE ABS FAILED AND THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RECALL. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE REPAIR WOULD COST $2,800. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL ON THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 135,000. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN.

THE DEALER RECALL #16V913000 & T.S.B# 45-1704 WHERE IN CLEARLY INCLUDES MY VEHICLE IN THE RANGE OF VIN NUMBERS AFFECTED BY THIS FAULT. VOLKSWAGEN DOES NOT WANT TO HONOR THIS RECALL BECAUSE IT DOES NOT SHOW UP IN THEIR SYSTEM WITH MY VIN#. THERE WAS A RECALL NOTICE FOR 2010 VOLKSWAGENS FOR A FAIL IN THE BRAKE LOCK SYSTEM (ABS) AND MINE WENT OUT ON MY CAR LAST YEAR 2018. WHY DIDN'T MY CAR QUALIFY FOR THE RECALL TO GET FIXED FROM THE MANUFACTURE. I'M A MOTHER OF 2 AND I WORK PLUS IN SCHOOL. I CAN'T AFFORD TO REPLACE THIS. MY DAUGHTER HAS BEEN DRIVING HER 2010 JETTA SINCE JUNE 2010 (PURCHASED NEW). UNTIL THE END OF 2016 SHE COMPLAINED THAT HER CAR STARTED RUNNING UNSMOOTH, JERKY, THE VSC WARNING LIGHT ON/OFF RANDOMLY, UNABLE TO GO FASTER THAN 60 MPH ON THE FREEWAY WHILE THE CAR WAS SHAKING VIOLENTLY AND THE ENGINE REVVING AGGRESSIVELY. I VERIFIED HER CAR DRIVING CONDITION MYSELF. I WAS TRAVELING ABOVE 70 MPH ON A 65-MPH FREEWAY ZONE. SUDDENLY THE CAR STARTED TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY AS IF ALL WHEELS WERE SEVERELY OFF-BALANCED. IGNORING MY ACCELERATOR PEDAL, I COULD BARELY DRIVE ABOVE 45 MPH. I FELT VERY UNSAFE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD AND PREPARED TO BE HIT BY ANOTHER CAR AT ANY MOMENT. TO ACHIEVE A DESIRED QUICK BRAKE PEDAL RESPONSE ON VOLKSWAGEN VEHICLES, THE DESIGN ENGINEERS OPTED TO INCREASE THE ASSEMBLY INTERFERENCE BETWEEN THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER AND THE BOOSTER INSTEAD TO REDUCE THE BRAKE PEDAL TO THE MASTER CYLINDER PISTON TRAVEL RATIO. THEY REDUCED THE CLEARANCES FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER PISTON SEALS TO THE BRAKE FLUID SUPPLY/RETURN PORTS SO THAT THE CAR BRAKES CAN BE ACTIVATED WITH SHORTER BRAKE PEDAL STROKE. AS THE RESULTS, UNDER ASSEMBLY DIMENSIONAL TOLERANCE STACK-UPS, SOME CARS WERE BUILT WITH THE BRAKE FLUID SUPPLY/RETURN PORTS PARTIALLY OR FULLY COVERED BY THE PISTON SEALS AT THE VOLKSWAGEN FACTORIES. WHEN THE THERMALLY EXPANDED BRAKE FLUID CANNOT FLOW BACK TO RESERVOIR THROUGH THE FULLY COVERED SUPPLY/RETURN PORTS EASILY, THE FLUID WILL EXPAND BRAKE CALIBER PISTONS PUSHING THE BRAKE PADS AGAINST THE ROTORS RESULTING BRAKE DRAGGING. WHEN A MOVING CAR'S ENGINE CANNOT OVERCOME WITH THE BRAKE DRAGGING FRICTIONS, THE CAR DRIVER WILL LOSE HIS/HER CONTROL TO THE VEHICLE SPEED. THE O-RING SWELL DUE TO AGING MADE THE JETTA WORSE. 2010 VW JETTA WITH 73K MILES EXPERIENCEING ISSUES WITH THE HYDRAULIC PUMP AND ABS SYSTEM. WHILE IN THE CAR IS IN MOTION, ENGAGEMENT OF THE ABS SYSTEM CAUSES THE DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. WHEN BRAKES ARE HIT, CAR VIOLENTLY PULLS FROM LEFT TO RIGHT OUT OF LANE BEYOND THE DRIVERS CONTROL. THIS ISSUE HAS OCCURRED MULTIPLE TIMES TRYING TO DECELERATE WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY IN HIGH TRAFFIC SITUATIONS. SMOKE FROM TIRE BURN HAS OCCURRED FROM THE LOSE OF CONTROL. THANKFULLY NO ACCIDENT OCCURRED, BUT THAT WAS EXTREMELY LUCKY. IT IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS CONDITION AND THE CAR IS UNDRIVEABLE WITH THIS ISSUE. NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN #16V913000 ISSUED ON 12/20/16 COVERS THIS MODEL AND YEAR VW FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE, HOWEVER, THE VIN NUMBER IDENTIFIED ABOVE IS NOT COVERED BY THE CURRENT RECALL. THE RECALL NEEDS TO BE EXPANDED TO COVER ADDITIONAL 2010 MODEL YEAR JETTA'S EXPERIENCING THE SAME HIGHLY DANGEROUS HYDRAULIC ABS ISSUE.

NEED TO DO BOTH SIDES FOR SAFETY. 1/5/16 COST 1200.00 TO REPLACE BOTH BACK BREAK DISKS, CALIPERS AND FLUSH BREAK FLUID AT VW AUTHORIZED DEALER. ISSUE HAPPENED FOLLOWING NORMAL DAY SHOPPING. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW IT COULD HAVE GOTTEN STUCK BUT THANKFUL I DID NOT DRIVE BACK HOME AND CLOSE TO FRIENDS HOUSE BECAUSE THE WHEEL WOULD HAVE CAUGHT FIRE OR FALLEN OFF ETC. NO IDEA HOW THIS HAPPENED BUT IF HAPPENS TO SOMEONE ON HIGHWAY THAT CALIPER KICKS ON AND DRIVER DOES NOT KNOW THEN YOU HAVE A FAULTY PROBLEM.
TOOK CAR TO DEALERSHIP FOR 40,000 MILE MAINTENANCE/TUNE UP. THE DEALERSHIP CALLED TO TELL ME I NEEDED NEW REAR BRAKE PADS. WHAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND IS HOW THE LEFT BRAKE PAD CAN BE ALMOST GONE AND NEED TO BE REPLACED WHILE THE OTHER BRAKE PADS HAVE 80% OF WEAR LEFT. I ASKED ABOUT THIS AND THE MANAGER SAID THEY JUST DO THAT SOMETIMES.REALLY? ONE BRAKE PADS WEARS TO ALMOST NOTHING BUT THE OTHER THREE ARE STILL GOOD. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND NEEDS TO BE FIXED BY VOLKSWAGEN IMMEDIATELY. *TR
DRIVING ON 2ND LANE OF FREEWAY. SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER - ALL WARNING LIGHTS COME ON DASHBOARD ACCOMPANIED BY BELLS AND DINGS. PULLED OVER TO SIDE OF ROAD - FORTUNATELY TRAFFIC NOT HEAVY. ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING HOWEVER NO FORWARD MOVEMENT WHEN PUSHING ACCELERATOR PEDAL - ENGINE JUST REVVED. TURNED CAR OFF THEN RESTARTED. WARNING LIGHTS STILL FLASHED BUT WAS ABLE TO PUT CAR INTO DRIVE AND START ROLLING - VEHICLE WAS IN "LIMP" MODE HOWEVER AND WOULD NOT GO OVER 10 MPH. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO DEALERSHIP WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED AND THE ECU RESET. DEALERSHIP UNABLE TO RECREATE PROBLEM. ON 8/16/14 THE SAME THING HAPPENED AS I WAS PULLING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY. THE VEHICLE WAS AGAIN TOWED TO DEALERSHIP WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A FAULTY ABS CONTROL UNIT FOR AN ESTIMATED 2500.00. *TR
AFTER FAILING INSPECTION LAST WEEK FOR THE SECOND TIME IN TWO YEARS, I PRECEDED TO CHANGE THE REAR BRAKES (WHICH WERE THE REASON FOR THE INSPECTION FAILURE). THE DRIVER'S SIDE REAR BRAKE PAD WAS WORE COMPLETELY TO THE METAL. THE PASSENGER'S SIDE LOOKED AS THOUGH IT HAD COME DIRECTLY OUT OF THE BOX, NO WEAR AT ALL. THE PARKING BRAKE WAS NOT HUNG UP, WHEELS SPUN FREELY AFTER REPLACING BOTH SIDES. THIS WAS THE SAME CASE WHEN THE VEHICLE FAILED INSPECTION TWO YEARS, APPROXIMATELY 40,000 MILES, AGO. AFTER READING MANY OTHER JETTA OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED SIMILAR ISSUES WITH THE REAR BRAKES FAILING PREMATURELY, I DECIDED TO SUBMIT THIS ISSUE TO NHTSA. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, SHE DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE BRAKES BEGAN TO MAKE A SQUEAKING NOISE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR INSPECTION WHO STATED THAT THE LEFT BRAKE PAD HAD WORN DOWN TO 25% WHILE THE RIGHT BRAKE PAD HAD ONLY WORN DOWN TO 75%. THE MECHANIC DID NOT KNOW WHY THE LEFT BRAKE PAD WORE DOWN FASTER THAN THE RIGHT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
RE: PARKING BRAKE. IN DEC 2013, MY 2010 VW JETTA TDI ROLLED BACKWARDS WITH THE PARKING BRAKE FULLY ENGAGED. IT HIT ANOTHER STATIONARY VEHICLE; THANKFULLY THERE WERE NO INJURIES EXCEPT TO THE TWO CARS. I HAD BROUGHT IN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER IN FEB 2013 WITH THE CONCERN THAT THE PARKING BRAKE WAS NOT SECURE. THEY SAID THEIR WAS LITTLE ADJUSTMENT TO BE MADE AND IT WAS WORKING TO SPECS. MY VEHICLE HAD UNDERGONE IT'S 40K SERVICE TWO MONTHS PRIOR TO THE MOST RECENT INCIDENT THAT RESULTED IN A CRASH. WORKING UP TO "SPECS" IS CLEARLY NOT SUFFICIENT OR SAFE. I WOULD LIKE THIS TO BE INVESTIGATED. *TR
I HAVE A 2010 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA AND I NOTICED EXCESSIVE BRAKE DUST FORMING ON THE REAR WHEELS AND OCCASIONAL SQUEAKING. I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERS ATTENTION AT MY FIRST SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE OF 10,000 MILES. I WAS TOLD NOTHING IS WRONG. AT THE NEXT SERVICE INTERVAL,20,000 MILES I WAS TOLD I NEED NEW REAR BRAKES. I KNOW THAT GENERALLY, 65% OF THE BRAKING IS DONE WITH THE FRONT BRAKES, THUS USUALLY MAKING THE FRONT BRAKES NEEDING REPLACEMENT 2 TIMES BEFORE THE REARS. VOLKSWAGEN SEEMS TO THINK MY CLAIM IS UNJUSTIFIED, ALTHOUGH I HAVE FOUND MANY BLOGS ONLINE OF PEOPLE STATING THE SAME ISSUES. I BELIEVE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE IS TOO TIGHT OR THERE IS A FLAW FROM THE FACTORY. I ALSO BELIEVE THAT THIS CREATES UNSAFE DRIVING CONDITIONS, POSSIBLY FOR MANY UNAWARE CONSUMERS, THAT SHOULD BE MADE INTO A RECALL BEFORE MAJOR DAMAGE IS DONE. *TR
BRAKES ON 2010 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA SPORTWAGON TDI WEARING UNEVENLY. 90 % FRONT BRAKE PAD LEFT AND 15% PAD LEFT ON THE REAR. VOLKSWAGEN SHOP REPORTS TO ME THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME AND IS NORMAL. VOLKSWAGEN SHOP MANAGER STATES IT IS DUE TO UNDERSIZED REAR BRAKE PAD CAUSING IT TO WEAR OUT QUICKLY. MANAGER ALSO AGREED THAT 8 OR 9 SETS OF REAR PADS TO ONE SET OF FRONT PADS IS ABOUT THE CORRECT RATIO. PREMATURE PAD WEAR OUT CAN CAUSE LOSS OF REAR WHEEL BREAKING RESULTING IN LOSS OF BREAKING AND MAY RESULT IN ACCIDENT DUE TO LONGER STOPPING DISTANCES. *TT
UPON EXITING THE FREEWAY AND APPLYING THE BRAKES,SPEED35MPH, THE LEFT REAR WHEEL LOCKED-UP AND BLEW THE TIRE. SPARE TIRE WAS PLACED ON VEHICLE, THEN DRIVEN APP. 2MILES TO HOUSE. DURING TRIP TO HOUSE BRAKES LOST FLUID AND IT BECAME HARD TO STOP CAR. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED. REQUIRED NEW TIRE, BRAKE CALIPER, PADS AND ROTOR REPLACE FLUID. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. THE CONTACT WAS REVERSING 5 MPH FROM A RESIDENTIAL DRIVEWAY WHEN THE EPS AND MALFUNCTION INDICATOR WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD. THE DEALER ADVISED THERE WAS A DEFECT IN THE ELECTRICAL WIRING AND RE-ROUTED THE WIRING. ON A SEPARATE OCCASION WHILE ATTEMPTING TO START THE VEHICLE, THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED AND THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO TURN THE KEY IN THE IGNITION. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS, SHE WAS ABLE TO START THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE AND THERE WERE NO REPAIRS. THE FAILURE RECURRED THREE TIMES. AT A LATER DATE, WHILE SITTING IDLE WITH THE BRAKE DEPRESSED, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO ROLL AWAY. THE CONTACT THEN ADDED MORE PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL BUT THE VEHICLE DID NOT STOP. THE VEHICLE WAS SHIFTED INTO PARK BUT TO NO AVAIL. THE CONTACT THEN UTILIZED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE BUT THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ROLL, GRADUALLY COMING TO A STOP BEFORE LIGHTLY CRASHING INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED BUT WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 4,500. UPDATED 11/16/10. *LJ

THE SERVICE CONSULTANT SAID THE REAR BRAKES NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED AND THAT THIS WAS NORMAL FOR THIS VEHICLE. THIS IS NOT NORMAL FOR ANY VEHICLE.
