2023 Volkswagen Id.4 Other Problems

The vehicle lurched forward as I was parking and hit a parked vehicle in front of me; it accelerated forward even though my foot wasn't on the accelerator. I have contacted VW and was told to take the vehicle to a VW dealer to be inspected; that is happening next week. I did not notice any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms prior to the accident.

On May 28, 2025, a 2023 VW ID.4 spontaneously caught fire while in use. The local Fire Department and County Hazmat responded to the scene. The vehicle was declared a total loss due to thermal runaway and lithium battery fume toxicity.

Drivers side Door handle will often not open after Recalled handle was installed. Requires a great deal of force many times. Was told twice by dealer that we had to "relearn" how to open the door.

I have been experiencing multiple issues with my vehicle. The backup camera frequently fails to respond, and the doors often do not open properly or get stuck. A significant concern is that the car does not hold a full charge, which severely impacts its range and reliability.

The incident occurred on May 24, 2025, while preparing to park the 2023 VW ID4. I had two occupants in the car with me. At the time of the incident, I was moving very slow with my foot on the brake, just about ready to stop and put the car in the park position, when the ID4 suddenly violently lurched forward.

1.What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The screen failed and went completely black while driving. It would not turn on again.

On 9/17/2024 roughly at 10:00PM, while in the drive-thru picking up food, my Volkswagen ID.4 suddenly self-accelerated out of nowhere as I was slowly driving towards the window to pay for food. I was completely shocked—I’ve never experienced anything like this. I tried to react quickly, but the car surged forward and slammed into a large cement light post.

When I am parking at 5mph in a medical center parking structure, the car suddenly got an uncontrollable acceleration that hit the parking cement and hit the wall in front of the parking area. I cannot imagine that if it is not in the parking structure with 5 MPH, it will be fatal or injured and hit more people and cars on the freeway. I want a safe vehicle and spent over $55K for my daily chore.

On the evening in question I stop the car in 5 ft front of my garage, which still does not have an automatic garage door opener. I press P to engage the parking brake and take it out of drive.

Your car's battery is part of a recall, which prevents you from using DC fast charging and limits you to charging only to 80% capacity. This significantly reduces your vehicle's range and charging speed, making long-distance travel much less practical than when you purchased it.

The door handle is an electronic button with a manual lever for the door to open in case there is no power or an emergency when a rescuer needs to open the door. I noticed only 1 door handle could do this and brought in for repair. The rest requires a lot more strength and 3 of the 4 doors work, but the dealership is reluctantly replacing the failed door handle.

Unknown - The day after purchasing the vehicle, and less than 24hrs and 50 miles on the vehicle, I attempted to start it and all the warning lights immediately went on. The vehicle subsequently locked me out and I was unable to gain entry into the vehicle. The car was towed to the dealership and has been with the dealership for 2 weeks.

The vehicle’s GPS/navigation system repeatedly misrepresents the vehicle’s physical location while driving. The defect includes incorrect vehicle positioning on the map display, including instances where the vehicle appears in incorrect geographic locations (including appearing in the middle of a river).

The navigation system does not work. It places the vehicle in places where it is not and shows erroneous speed limit displays and erroneous messages about traffic conditions which do not exist where the vehicle is actually located. The Volkswagen dealer says they have no fix for this and that many of their models have this problem.

Continuously receiving error message to have front sensors cleaned. Vehicle brought into dealership several times, for weeks at a time. On last visit sensors replaced, and I was told that “ The front sensors have a level of damage caused by sand, salt and other road debris.

iD4 has had 2 recent recalls requiring software updates at the dealership. Vehicle was taken in 6/26/25 for door handle recall and software update. returned after 7 days, door handle replacement completed, but unable to do software update due to "server down".

The built in GPS map on the touchscreen of the car positions the car roughly 50 miles east of its current location. Minimally this can result in distracted driving if I attempt to use the map for directions since it has an inaccurate starting point. The VW dealership has not been able to repair the problem.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The tailgate door holding mechanism (gas pressurized struts) has failed so that the door no longer stays open. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk?

I have encountered 2 high speed blowouts on my Pirelli Scorpion tires. One in July 2024 and one in Dec 2024. Car has 6,000 miles on it.

I bought the Volkswagen ID4 on lease from one of the Volkswagen dealer Dick Hannah based out of Portland, OR. It's 4 year lease, paying $760/month. I have received many recalls from Volkswagen, one of them was door handle and lock issue.

This car is subject to 3 recalls, the first of which is now nearly 8 months old. I can not get a dealer to address the recalls, despite repeated visits to the dealership.

My car has been under a recall notice since 2024. A fix was not available until January. As soon as repairs were available, I scheduled an appointment for repair (requested 12/29/24, scheduled 2/13/25).

Charging Door Malfunction - Complaint Submission Dear Volkswagen Customer Service, My name is [XXX] . I am writing to report an issue with my vehicle's charging door, which has not been opening for the past week. I believe that the actuator may need repairs, as this problem has persisted for some time now.

My dealership, Westside VW in St. Louis Park, MN, has not completed my recalls in a reasonable amount of time. I scheduled an appointment two months ago to get this done and they canceled it the day before saying "they didn't have the parts." They said they'd call when the parts were in stock, approximately 1-2 weeks.

My recent safety recall has been resolved by dealer for the software and door locks . Can you go-ahead and clear it from your end.

- The door handles do not open on most occasions when there are passengers in the back seats. It is available for inspection. - I cannot get the passengers out and that is a risk in any situation when I need to open these doors.

My vehicle has been recalled due to a problem with the door handles. The dealership has been notified per the recall instructions, and they have told me the car is safe to drive and to wait for more information about the repair process.

In May '23 VW Manufacturer sent a letter informing my car was subject to Recall 57J4, for door handle failure which can lead to doors opening while vehicle is moving. 7/25/2 I brought my car to Steven’s Creek VW in San Jose, CA, for several issues that needed repair, and asked them to test for Recall 57J4.

The infotainment system continuously goes out on a daily basis and I have to reboot it every time, the rear camera will delay or not come on at all and I have to put the car in neutral then back to reverse to get it back on. The speedometer screen goes out constantly and won’t show how fast I am driving or my battery percent.

The doors still don't work properly. They do not close. It happens randomly.

Driver-side door opens and closes by itself while driving or when the car is stopped. Driver-side door also locks and unlocks itself while driving or when the car is stopped. Unable to unlock driver-side door from the outside of the car.

After leaving a stop sign and making a right turn I heard what sounded like a clunk with an audible tone. This was followed by the interior lights turning on and a red door open symbol on the dashboard display (see attached photo). A few hundred feet later I parked my car at work and took photos of the passenger front door ajar as if attempting to unlatch while in motion.

The backup camera flickers intermittently on the system. The unit has been in for repairs 2 times for this issue, with the camera unit being replaced once. The system continues to flicker intermittently with a rough correlation to having direct sunlight on the back of the vehicle.

Outside drivers side door handle stops working intermittently. Had to lower windows and use inside handle to open door. Also, driver side door randomly latches and unlatches without any interaction with the handle.

Since I purchased the car I had had difficulty with unlocking and locking the doors intermittently but had not yet had it looked by the dealer. I had the front passenger door repaired/replaced recently, and shortly after that the doors started randomly opening.

The driver's side door opened while I was driving the vehicle at around 25 MPH How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The door opened by itself while the car was moving causing multiple safety issues to me the driver and others driving near me.

When I put drivers and passengers front window down part way and stop it and use the window control to put the window back up it goes down not up. Window has to go all the way down before it will go back up. I also have a loner ID.4 that does the same thing.

ID4 Pro Plus has a feature car surround area view—- this is essentially a camera system that provides multiple views while backing / driving forward that stopped functioning appropriately 19 days after purchased . VW Dealership in Greenville,SC reported software problem with update pending in May. Software Update in May did not resolve issue.

* After parking on a hill (with the car facing uphill) and putting the car in Park, as my wife was gathering her things to exit the car, the car suddenly released from Park and lurched backward, rolling into the parked car behind it. This caused a dent on the back of the ID4, fortunately no damage to the other car. And especially fortunate that no people were hurt.

To the left of the steering wheel, there is a button for “Max Windshield Defog”. When this button is pressed, the fan speed slows down and does not help clear visibility of a foggy windshield. Instead, the driver must navigate through several on screen menus to find and manually adjust for windshield defog, which is a safety concern while operating the vehicle.

There is an ongoing NHTSA investigation into serious door-handle defects that can cause the doors to open unexpectedly while driving, which has remained unresolved for over a year. Additionally, the vehicle is subject to a recall regarding a missing gear-position indicator, posing a potential roll-away hazard.

Documented iPhone and Infotainment system not functioning with hands free. This results in key safety feature which I bought the ID4 for. Prior VW service claims this is user error and cannot reproduce.

Call module not working correctly which leaves the GPS in the vehicle inaccurate and presents a safety issue for vehicle location using sos. VW states it's a software issue and won't even evaluate it.

NHTSA Recall Number: 24V344 from May 2024 still has not been resolved and no remedy is available. There is now an additional recall: 24V651 on the vehicle.

I have an open recall on my vehicle. It is related to software defect that can affect the dashboard display that can affect the rear view camera. Currently, no remedy available.

Preconditions: Phone was connected to Infotainment via Wireless Android Auto and reproducing content from the phone. A/C was on fan. Driving on congested highway at around 35 MPH with stop and go segments.

Vehicle computer system reboots while driving. Everything on dash goes black.

During driving my computer system shut down and restarted. Instruments went grey. This is not safe.

2023 volkswagen id 4. Consumer writes in regard to NHTSA safety recall 23v-213. The consumer was sold this vehicle after the recall date, and is requesting to be reimbursed for the cost of the car.

The driver’s side door unlatches randomly and the door flew open on a turn.
