SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT

Tenneco Automotive (DRiV) is recalling certain aftermarket ball joints for 2004-2007 Toyota Sequoia and 2004-2006 Toyota Tundra vehicles, MOOG part number K80521, K80522, NAPA part number NCP2601633, NCP2601634, ACDelco part number 45D2344, and 45D2345. The ball joint housing may have inadequate hardness, causing premature failure.

Fix: DRiV will work with distributors to return unsold parts. Dealers will inspect and replace the ball joint as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 17, 2022. Owners may contact DRiV customer service at 1-877-489-6659 or at RECALL.SUPPORT@DRIV.COM.

ON CERTAIN TRUCKS AND MINI VANS, DUE TO POSSIBLE IMPROPER FINISHING OF THE FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINT, SOME BALL JOINTS MAY EXPERIENCE AN INCIDENTAL DETERIORATION OF THE INTERNAL LUBRICATION. THIS MAY CAUSE THE BALL JOINT TO WEAR AND LOOSEN PREMATURELY, WHICH COULD RESULT IN INCREASED STEERING EFFORT, REDUCED VEHICLE SELF-CENTERING, AND NOISE IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINTS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 28, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, DUE TO A MANUFACTURING ISSUE IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINT, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE SURFACE OF THE BALL OF THE JOINT MAY HAVE BEEN SCRATCHED. THE BALL JOINT MAY EVENTUALLY EXPERIENCE EXCESSIVE WEAR AND LOOSENESS, RESULTING IN INCREASED STEERING EFFORT.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINTS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 5, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

This same ball joint has failed multiple times even after replacement, and a second failure at 60-65 mph caused damage to your running board, brakes, door, tie rod, coil springs, control arm, and ball joints. Replacing the lower ball joints and inspecting related suspension components for damage will be necessary to restore safe operation.

Purchased new Toyota Tundra in 2004. Performed rust recall at dealer on 07/22/15. October 2016, brakes failed. Brake line completely rusted. July 26, 2021, Toyota Tundra rejected at state inspection for badly rusted frame. Inspectors were unable to get wheel off to inspect brakes because of rust damage. Took to Toyota dealer on March 9, 2022. They performed airbag recall. Unable to do front suspension lower ball joints recall. Dealer said frame could break when they put it on lift. Dealer said Timeframe to repair frame had expired. Estimate to fix frame over $15,000; Plus would need a lot more parts to go with replacement. Vehicle has approximately 68,500 miles on it.

Brought vehicle in for service and frame is completely rusted through in critical areas where suspension and body mounts are supposed to be mounted. The car is not road worthy and unsafe to drive. I came to understand that there was a recall for these truck frame, however my frame was never replaced. My frame was never treated for rust. This truck has always been maintained and serviced at a Toyota dealership. Now I'm told their is nothing they can do.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT UPON TAKING HIS VEHICLE TO HERITAGE TOYOTA (1620 SHELBURNE RD, SOUTH BURLINGTON, VT 05403) FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 19V741000 (AIR BAGS) REPAIR, THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN INFORMED HIM THAT SEVERE CORROSION HAD FORMED ON THE TOP OF THE VEHICLE'S UNDERCARRIAGE. THE CONTACT WAS SHOWN THE CORROSION DAMAGE AND NOTICED THAT HOLES AND MISSING PARTS WERE UNDER THE SUBFRAME. THE CONTACT STATED THAT IN 2014, A SPECIAL COATING WAS PLACED ON THE UNDERCARRIAGE TO PREVENT CORROSION HOWEVER, THE COATING FAILED TO PREVENT THE RUST CONDITION. IN 2007, WITH 25K MILES, TRUCK WAS RECALLED AND HAD BALL JT REPLACED. AT 60K MILES, PARKING BRAKE MECHANISM WAS FROZEN (CORRODED) AT THE REAR WHEELS. AT APPROXIMATELY 90K MILES, FRONT SUSPENSION LEFT SIDE VERTICAL LINK FRACTURED. REPLACED LINK ON BOTH SIDES, AND RIGHT SIDE HAD DETERIORATED AND FAILURE WAS IMMINENT. WHEEL BACKING PLATES ON ALL 4 WHEELS BEGAN CORRODING. REAR BUMPER AND SUPPORT BRACKETS BEGAN TO CORRODE AT 90K MILES. NOVEMBER OF 2014, VEHICLE IS RECALLED FOR INSPECTION OF FRAME. TOYOTA DETERMINES IT DID NOT NEED REPLACING, AND SPRAY SOME TYPE OF COATING ON THE FRAME. IN OCTOBER OF 2019, AT 140K MILES, ONE OF THE TWO FUEL TANK STRAPS FAILS DUE TO CORROSION, FUEL TANK SUSPENDED BY ONE STRAP UNTIL DISCOVERED. JULY OF 2020, DISCOVER REAR AXLE DIFFERENTIAL COVER LEAKING DUE TO SEVERE CORROSION OF THE AXLE METAL. ATTEMPT TO TRADE IN VEHICLE AT TOYOTA IN OCT OF 2020, AND THEY PROVIDE A VALUE LESS THAN BOOK VALUE DUE TO CORROSION, AND STATE THEY ARE TAKING A RISK AS THE VEHICLE MAY NOT PASS INSPECTION. CALL TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE TO ASK FOR ASSISTANCE OR DISCOUNT TO PURCHASE A NEW TRUCK, AS WE HAD NO INTENTION OF SELLING THE TRUCK WE HAVE CARED FOR FOR 16 YRS, WITH ONLY 150K MILES, AND NOW WITH A BAD AXLE MUST BUY ANOTHER TRUCK ASAP IN 2020. THE TRUCK WAS NOT A DAILY DRIVER, WAS NOT DRIVEN FOR A WORK COMMUTE. WE DISAGREED WITH THE DECISION TO UNDERCOAT AS THE DEAL WAS SHOWING SIGNS OF EXTENSIVE RUST. NOW, OUR FRAME IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO THE POINT OF FALLING AWAY FROM THE BODY. JUST ABOUT ALL PARTS UNDER THE TRUCK HAVE NOW SUFFERED AS WELL. WE HAVE NEVER HAD THE TRUCK LAUNCH A BOAT, GONE OFF ROAD, OR ANY OTHER DANGEROUS ACTIVITIES. BASICALLY A TRAIN STATION AND DUMP RUN VEHICLE. I AM TERRIBLY DISAPPOINTED WITH TOYOTA AND THEIR POOR HANDLING OF THE SITUATION. AT THAT TIME, THE VEHICLE DID NOT HAVE EXCESSIVE CORROSION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE DEALER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. VEHICLE HAD A RECALL IN 2005 FOR BALL JOINTS WHICH WAS COMPLETED AT 75K MILES ON MARCH, 2007. CURRENT MILEAGE IS 299,525 MILES ON THAT REPLACEMENT. I DO NOT THINK MANY OWNERS KEEP VEHICLE FOR THAT NUMBER OF MILES. HOWEVER VEHICLE IS IN GOOD CONDITION AND POTENTIAL SEEMS TO EXIST FOR BEARING FAILURE. FRONT SUSPENSION STABILIZER BAR RUSTED OFF OF FRAME, RESULTING IN LARGE, STRUCTURALLY COMPROMISING HOLE IN THE WELDING LOCATION ON THE FRAME. WHEN TURNING INTO MY DRIVEWAY I HEARD THE STABILIZER BAR DETACH FROM THE FRAME. THE DRIVEWAY IS MODESTLY SLOPED WHICH CAUSED MY LEFT WHEEL SUSPENSION TO FLEX AS IT WOULD IN ANY ORDINARY DRIVING CONDITIONS. I TOOK MY 2004 TOYOTA TUNDRA TO A LOCAL SERVICE CENTER BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT NEEDED SHOCK ABSORBERS. ONCE ON THE LIFT WE FOUND THE ENTIRE REAR SECTION WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED OUT WITH SEVERAL MAJOR PARTS JUST HANGING FROM THE FRAME. TOYOTA CLAIMS THEY SENT RECALLS IN 2015 HOWEVER I DID NOT GET THEM. I DID RECEIVE A VERY RECENT RECALL FOR AN AIR BAG AND FRONT COIL SPRINGS, WITHIN A WEEK THE TRUCK WAS TAKEN IN FOR THE RECALL. AT NO TIME WAS I INFORMED OF THE DANGEROUS ISSUE OF THE REAR SUSPENSION. I CALLED TOYOTA TO DISCUSS THE MATTER AND WAS TOLD THEY WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING TO CORRECT THE PROBLEMS. THERE IS A FUEL LINE FAILURE NEXT TO THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD. THE CORROSION DAMAGE TO THE STEERING SYSTEM FITTINGS REQUIRES REPLACEMENT OF THE RACK ASSEMBLY ALTHOUGH THE SYSTEM OPERATES PROPERLY. THERE IS CORROSION DAMAGE TO MANY OF THE SUSPENSION CONNECTION POINTS TO THE FRAME INCLUDING REAR SPRINGS. DEALER DEEMS THE VEHICLE UNSAFE IN IT'S CURRENT CONDITION AND RECOMMENDS IT BE SOLD FOR SALVAGE. THERE IS LITTLE TO NO CORROSION DAMAGE TO THE BODY THAT CAN BE SEEN FROM A VISUAL UNDERSIDE INSPECTION AND VEHICLE LOOKS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION FROM THE OUTSIDE. THE PROLIFERATION CAN BE DESCRIBED AS "LAYERS OF A BISCUIT FLAKING A PART." THE DEALERSHIP POUNDED ON THE FRAME WITH A TOOL AND SAID THAT IT DID NOT FAIL THE "TOYOTA FRAME TOOL" TEST AND SINCE THE VEHICLE IS A 2004 THEY WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT UNTIL IT FAILS OR BECOMES PART OF A RECALL. ON 9/6/2006 WHILE DRIVING ON A LOCAL ROADWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH THE BALL JOINT OF MY 2004 TOYOTA TUNDRA COLLAPSE CAUSING MY VEHICLE'S FRONT END TO DRAG ON THE ROADWAY. THINKING THIS WAS THE PROBLEM I REDUCED IT TO 32 PSI. CONTINUING MY DRIVE FOR AN ADDITIONAL HOUR OR SO I REALIZED THAT THE REDUCTION IN PRESSURE WHILE IT MADE A DIFFERENCE THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTED. I RETURNED TO MY DEALERSHIP AFTER MY WEEKEND TRIP AND INFORMED THEM OF THE DIFFERENCE IN THE FEEL AND SOUND OF MY TUNDRA. ANYWAY WE TOWED THE TRUCK TO OUR PERSONAL SERVICE MECHANIC, WHO CHARGED US $70 FOR THE TOW. THE MECHANIC TOLD US THE FRONT BALL JOINT CAME OUT AND SO THE TIRE CAME OFF. THE TIRE WING AND THE LINE WAS DAMAGED DUE TO THE INCIDENT. FORTUNATELY, THAT WAS ALL. THE NOTICE GAVE A PHONE NUMBER, 888.270.9371, WHICH WE CALLED. WHEN WE GAVE THEM OUR VIN NUMBER, THEY TOLD US THAT OUR TRUCKS WERE NOT INCLUDED FOR SERVICE PER THE RECALL, SO THEY WILL NOT SERVICE OUR TRUCKS. SO FAR, OUR TRUCK IN FLORIDA DID NOT HAVE THE SAME ACCIDENT, BUT I AM VERY UNEASY, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE I AM THE ONE THAT USES THE TRUCK IN FLORIDA AND SINCE WE PURCHASED THE TWO TRUCKS AT THE SAME TIME. AS OF NOW, THE DAMAGED TRUCK IS BEING HELD AT THE MECHANIC'S UNTIL WE CAN HAVE OUR TRUCKS SERVICED. OTHERWISE, WE WILL HAVE TO PAY OVER $1000/ PER TRUCK TO FIX THE PROBLEM, IN WHICH CASE WE FEEL IT IS ONLY RIGHT TO BE FULLY REIMBURSED FOR THOSE SERVICES. *NM

WE HAVE A TOYOTA TUNDRA A 2004, MY HUSBAND SAID IT WAS STEERING LIKE SOMETHING WAS CATCHING HE TOOK IT TO A REPAIR SHOP THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG, SO WE PICKED IT UP THAT SAME DAY, TOOK IT ON A TRIP, ON OUR WAY BACK GOING 70 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY IT FELT LIKE THE WHOLE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE OF OUR TRUCK FELL OFF, IT WAS A TERRIBLE TERRIFYING JOLT MY HUSBAND KNEW THAT WE HAD LOST THE TIRE AND RIM SPARKS WERE FLYING EVERYWHERE AS WE WERE SLIDING DOWN THE HIGHWAY ON THE AXEL, LUCKILY WE WERE ON A STRAIGHT AWAY WITH NO TRAFFIC BUT ONE VEHICLE BEHIND US. THE FRICTION SLOWED THE TRUCK DOWN, WE PULLED IT OFF THE HIGHWAY, WE WERE SURPRISED TO SEE THAT THE BALL JOINT HAD COLLAPSED AND THE TIRE AND WHEEL WERE FOLDED UNDER THE TRUCK SO THAT THE TRUCK WAS ACTUALLY SLIDING DOWN THE HIGHWAY ON THIS TIRE AND WHEEL, THE SHERIFF SAID HE HAD NEVER SEEN ANYTHING QUITE LIKE IT. WE CALLED THE TOYOTA DEALER TO SEE IF THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL THAT WE HAD MISSED THEY SAID NO RECALL ON THAT VIN NUMBER. AFTER CHECKING ON THE INTERNET WE FOUND THAT THEY DO HAVE THIS PROBLEM ON THE 2004 TUNDRA'S BUT OURS WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. TOYOTA IS SAYING THAT IT IS NOT THERE FAULT OR PROBLEM. OUR TRUCK IS ONLY 2 YEARS OLD, WITH 52,000 MILES. BEFORE THE BALL JOINT COLLAPSED WE WERE COMING DOWN A MOUNTAIN PASS WITH A LOT OF CURVES IF IT HAD OF HAPPENED THEN OUR OUTCOME WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE. WE WERE LUCKY TO COME AWAY WITH ONLY SORE MUSCLES. THE COST OF REPAIRS IS GOING TO BE OVER $6,000 DOLLARS. I DON'T EVEN WANT TO GET BACK IN THAT TRUCK, I DON'T FEEL SAFE TO RIDE IN IT. HOW CAN YOU SELL SOMETHING THAT YOU KNOW IS NOT SAFE. I AM VERY UPSET THAT TOYOTA TAKES THE STAND THAT IT IS NOT THEIR RESPONSIBILITY. WE HAD FAITH IN THE TOYOTA BRAND. NOT ANYMORE.
