After hitting a minor pothole, you heard a clunking sound from the front suspension. The top cap on your front coil-over shock (made of aluminum) broke, causing the shock shaft and bump stop to stick through the upper mounting plate. While the coil spring kept the vehicle suspended, the shock can no longer properly absorb bumps and impacts. The dealer denied warranty coverage citing the pothole as external damage, though you've driven over that same pothole many times before without incident and note this isn't the first case of this part failing. Fixing this will require replacement of the broken shock assembly's top cap or possibly the entire front shock unit.
