NHTSA Campaign: 17V425000

Component: STRUCTURE:BODY:HOOD:HINGE AND ATTACHMENTS

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain 2011-2016 Toyota Tacoma and 4Runner vehicles equipped with accessory hood scoops installed by SET or SET dealers. The adhesive attaching the hood scoop may weaken, allowing the hood scoop to detach from the vehicle.

Risk: If the hood scoop detaches, it may become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: SET will notify owners, and dealers will mechanically fasten the scoop to the hood, free of charge. The recall began on September 1, 2017. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-954-429-2000. SET's number for this recall is SET17B.

NHTSA Campaign: 14V054000

Component: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2012 and 2013 Toyota Tacoma and Lexus RX350 vehicles and certain model year 2012 Toyota Rav4 vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the brake system contains a brake actuator that adjusts the fluid pressure of each wheel cylinder. An electrical component within the actuator may experience an increased resistance resulting in the illumination of various warning lights, including those for the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system, Antilock Brake System (ABS), and Traction Control system.

Risk: If this occurs, these systems could become inoperative, reducing the directional control assistance, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and Toyota and Lexus dealers will update the software for the Skid Control electronic control unit, free of charge. The recall began on March 28, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

NHTSA Campaign: 14V475000

Component: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2008-2014 FJ Cruiser and Tacoma vehicles equipped with accessory wheels and tires installed by Toyota or dealers prior to the vehicle's first sale. The affected vehicles may list incorrect spare tire size and/or cold tire inflation information on the tire placard. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims for Passenger Cars."

Risk: If the spare tire is inflated to the incorrect pressure provided on the placard, tire failure may occur while it is being driven on, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: For the involved vehicles, overlay stickers to correct the tire placard will either be mailed to owners or provided to dealers for placement over the incorrect information on the placard. The recall is expected to begin in September 2014. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.

Component: ENGINE

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Tacoma vehicles manufactured July 1, 2013, through October 11, 2013. The engines of the affected vehicles contain valve springs that may break over time.

Risk: If the valve springs break, the engine could fail and stall while the vehicle is being driven, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the valve springs, free of charge. The recall began on November 27, 2013. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

NHTSA Campaign: 13V494000

Component: TIRES:TEMPORARY/EMERGENCY SPARE TIRE

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Tacoma vehicles equipped with 18" Maverick Alloy Wheels. In the affected vehicles, the spare tire requires the use of a different style of lug nut to attach it to the vehicle than the other wheels use. These lug nuts were not provided with the vehicle.

Risk: If the spare tire/wheel is installed on the vehicle using the lug nuts from another wheel, damage to the wheel could result and may eventually lead to a loose wheel, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: SET will notify owners, and dealers will: (a) Install a Warning Label on the spare tire/wheel, (b) supply a bag containing proper spare wheel lug nuts, and (c) place an Owner's Manual Addendum in the vehicle's glove box. The recall began on January 23, 2014. Owners may contact SET at 1-954-429-2000.

NHTSA Campaign: 13V123000

Component: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS

Southeast Toyota is recalling certain model year 2008 and 2010-2013 Toyota Tundra, 2010-2012 Rav4, 2012 Toyota Sequoia, 2010-2011 Toyota Corolla, 2010-2011 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser, 2011 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2010-2013 Toyota Venza, 2010-2011 Toyota 4Runner, 2010-2013 Toyota Tacoma, 2011-2012 Toyota Sienna, 2012 Toyota Prius, 2013 Scion FR-S, 2011 Scion XD, 2011 Scion XB, and 2012 Scion TC vehicles. These vehicles were sold with labels that were outside the allowable one percent of accuracy of actual weight added. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."

Risk: An inaccurate label could lead to owners overloading their vehicles and tires. An overloaded vehicle can result in a tire failure which may result in a vehicle crash, personal injury, or property damage.

Fix: Southeast Toyota will notify owners and provide a corrected label with instructions concerning its installation. A small group of the affected vehicles will need additonal remedies which are still being developed. The recall began on May 28, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

Steering3 issues
criticalSTEERING
Filed: May 2021

Your steering temporarily locks up when turning corners and suddenly loses power steering assist, making the wheel feel stiff. This happened again just three days after the Toyota dealer replaced your entire rack and pinion assembly for $1,500. Your wife nearly had an accident because of this issue at only 80,000 miles. The dealer may need to inspect the new rack and pinion assembly or diagnose whether there's an underlying electrical or hydraulic problem causing the power steering to fail.

Your lower intermediate steering shaft has become severely rusted, making steering very difficult and preventing your steering wheel from returning to center properly. You may have noticed this developed gradually over several months as steering became increasingly hard to control. The u-joint in the steering shaft will likely need to be replaced along with the affected shaft component.

The rear frame of your truck, where the bumper and trailer hitch attach, rusted through and separated from the vehicle while you were backing up a camper. Your Toyota dealer mentioned there was a recall for frame rust that wasn't completed on your vehicle, but it's no longer covered under warranty. While this happened at low speed in your driveway, you're concerned that if it had occurred on the highway while towing, the camper could have detached completely. The fix would likely involve frame repair or replacement, possibly as part of a rust-related recall service.

Your 2013 Toyota Tacoma's paint is peeling on the rear door, engine compartment, and other areas due to a primer adhesion problem caused by sun exposure, not accident damage. This matches a known defect that Toyota addressed in Customer Support Program ZKG for 2009–2015 Tacoma models. Despite contacting Toyota multiple times since April 2024, you haven't received help, inspection, or acknowledgment of the issue. Addressing this will likely require the dealer to sand, reprime, and repaint the affected panels under warranty or a service program.

Your fuel door hinge broke, and you've found this is a common issue reported by other owners of 2005-2015 Tacomas. Before the hinge completely broke, you noticed the fuel door wasn't closing properly. While this isn't a safety risk, Toyota hasn't officially acknowledged it as a widespread problem. The fix will likely involve replacing the fuel door hinge assembly.

Your horn and steering wheel controls may stop working within the first month of ownership due to a faulty clockspring (the component that allows electrical signals to pass through your steering wheel). This is an expensive repair that the owner reports has been a recurring issue across multiple Tacoma purchases. The fix will likely require replacing the clockspring assembly.

Filed: Sep 2025

Your horn stopped working suddenly while driving, but it only functions when you turn the steering wheel and press the horn button at the same time. This suggests a failed clock spring in the steering wheel, which is a component that also manages your airbag system. Replacing the steering wheel clock spring should restore normal horn operation and ensure your airbag functions properly.

Filed: Dec 2025

Your power brake booster failed while driving, causing a significant loss of braking power with no warning. Fortunately, you were in a low-traffic area when it happened. This part has been known to fail on some Toyota models, and the repair cost $3,000 at the dealership. The fix will involve replacing the brake booster unit.

Air Bags,seat Belts1 issue
criticalAIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
Filed: Jan 2025

Your airbag warning lights came on for both the driver and passenger sides and won't turn off, even when you fasten your seat belt. The system is displaying an "airbags off" warning, and the seat belt warning light also triggers the airbag warnings to activate. The warning lights stay on until you turn off the engine, and they return each time you restart the vehicle. This issue needs immediate attention since it affects your safety system.

Vehicle Speed Control1 issue
criticalVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
CrashFiled: Aug 2021

While reversing and trying to park, your engine suddenly revved up and the vehicle accelerated on its own even though you were pressing the brake pedal. You lost steering control, and the vehicle crashed into two other cars and a restaurant building where people were dining outside. You were able to stop the vehicle by shifting gears and turning off the engine. The cause of this sudden acceleration wasn't determined, and the incident resulted in injuries to you and a diner. This issue may involve the throttle control system, brake system interaction, or electronic speed control components that need professional diagnosis to identify why the brakes didn't prevent acceleration.

Power Train1 issue
highPOWER TRAIN
CrashFiled: Jun 2025

Your parked Tacoma rolled down your driveway and crashed into a neighbor's tree, damaging the taillights, tailgate, and bumper. After the incident, you noticed the truck can shift into gear without pressing the brake pedal, and the gear shifter moves out of Park even when the engine is off. This suggests a problem with the transmission shift interlock system that normally prevents these actions for safety.

highSTRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: May 2025

Your truck's frame was repaired using spray foam rather than being properly replaced, and this foam has been deteriorating and falling off since you bought it. You've noticed significant rust on the frame underneath, and while Toyota inspected it and deemed the foam repair adequate by their standards, you're concerned about the safety of this approach on a 12-year-old vehicle. The repair will likely require either complete frame replacement or professional rust treatment and repainting to properly address the underlying corrosion.

Filed: Jun 2023

Your ABS (anti-lock braking system) unexpectedly activated while turning at 35 mph without any warning lights coming on. This happened at around 92,000 miles and may be related to a known Toyota safety recall. Having the ABS and stability control system inspected by a dealer is important to ensure your brakes work as intended.

Filed: May 2021

Your speedometer and fuel gauge stopped working while driving at various speeds. After you replaced the battery, your vehicle wouldn't start, with no warning lights appearing on the dashboard. A mechanic diagnosed that your entire electrical wiring harness needs to be replaced to restore these functions.

Filed: Dec 2025

Your horn has started working intermittently around 200,000 miles—sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't—even though your steering wheel controls and airbag warning lights appear normal. The problem is likely in the clockspring (the coil that connects steering wheel controls to your vehicle's electrical system). Additionally, you've noticed your transmission slips into 3rd gear unexpectedly after light bumps from items in the front cupholders, which are too small and unstable for most drink containers. Fixing the horn will likely require replacing the clockspring, and the transmission issue may need diagnostic testing to identify the cause.

Filed: Mar 2024

Your rear leaf springs are showing signs of rust and corrosion, and they're making noise while you drive. This is a suspension issue that should be addressed to prevent further deterioration. The fix will likely involve replacing the corroded leaf springs with new ones.
