NHTSA Campaign: 17V425000

Component: STRUCTURE:BODY:HOOD:HINGE AND ATTACHMENTS

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain 2011-2016 Toyota Tacoma and 4Runner vehicles equipped with accessory hood scoops installed by SET or SET dealers. The adhesive attaching the hood scoop may weaken, allowing the hood scoop to detach from the vehicle.

Risk: If the hood scoop detaches, it may become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: SET will notify owners, and dealers will mechanically fasten the scoop to the hood, free of charge. The recall began on September 1, 2017. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-954-429-2000. SET's number for this recall is SET17B.

NHTSA Campaign: 14V054000

Component: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2012 and 2013 Toyota Tacoma and Lexus RX350 vehicles and certain model year 2012 Toyota Rav4 vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the brake system contains a brake actuator that adjusts the fluid pressure of each wheel cylinder. An electrical component within the actuator may experience an increased resistance resulting in the illumination of various warning lights, including those for the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system, Antilock Brake System (ABS), and Traction Control system.

Risk: If this occurs, these systems could become inoperative, reducing the directional control assistance, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and Toyota and Lexus dealers will update the software for the Skid Control electronic control unit, free of charge. The recall began on March 28, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

NHTSA Campaign: 14V475000

Component: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2008-2014 FJ Cruiser and Tacoma vehicles equipped with accessory wheels and tires installed by Toyota or dealers prior to the vehicle's first sale. The affected vehicles may list incorrect spare tire size and/or cold tire inflation information on the tire placard. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims for Passenger Cars."

Risk: If the spare tire is inflated to the incorrect pressure provided on the placard, tire failure may occur while it is being driven on, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: For the involved vehicles, overlay stickers to correct the tire placard will either be mailed to owners or provided to dealers for placement over the incorrect information on the placard. The recall is expected to begin in September 2014. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.

NHTSA Campaign: 13V494000

Component: TIRES:TEMPORARY/EMERGENCY SPARE TIRE

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Tacoma vehicles equipped with 18" Maverick Alloy Wheels. In the affected vehicles, the spare tire requires the use of a different style of lug nut to attach it to the vehicle than the other wheels use. These lug nuts were not provided with the vehicle.

Risk: If the spare tire/wheel is installed on the vehicle using the lug nuts from another wheel, damage to the wheel could result and may eventually lead to a loose wheel, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: SET will notify owners, and dealers will: (a) Install a Warning Label on the spare tire/wheel, (b) supply a bag containing proper spare wheel lug nuts, and (c) place an Owner's Manual Addendum in the vehicle's glove box. The recall began on January 23, 2014. Owners may contact SET at 1-954-429-2000.

NHTSA Campaign: 13V014000

Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4; model year 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year Corolla, Sienna and Tundra; model year 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza; model year 2012 Prius V; and model year 2010-2012 Sequoia. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.

Risk: If the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. This could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.

Fix: Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. The recall began on March 21, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

NHTSA Campaign: 13V123000

Component: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS

Southeast Toyota is recalling certain model year 2008 and 2010-2013 Toyota Tundra, 2010-2012 Rav4, 2012 Toyota Sequoia, 2010-2011 Toyota Corolla, 2010-2011 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser, 2011 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2010-2013 Toyota Venza, 2010-2011 Toyota 4Runner, 2010-2013 Toyota Tacoma, 2011-2012 Toyota Sienna, 2012 Toyota Prius, 2013 Scion FR-S, 2011 Scion XD, 2011 Scion XB, and 2012 Scion TC vehicles. These vehicles were sold with labels that were outside the allowable one percent of accuracy of actual weight added. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."

Risk: An inaccurate label could lead to owners overloading their vehicles and tires. An overloaded vehicle can result in a tire failure which may result in a vehicle crash, personal injury, or property damage.

Fix: Southeast Toyota will notify owners and provide a corrected label with instructions concerning its installation. A small group of the affected vehicles will need additonal remedies which are still being developed. The recall began on May 28, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

Your leaf springs are making noise and have loosened, which repair shops warn could break off and puncture your fuel tank. This problem isn't covered under Toyota's Safety Recall E02 for your 2012 Tacoma model year. You're concerned that other 2012 Tacomas may face the same risk. Fixing this will likely require leaf spring inspection, tightening, or replacement.

Your truck's right leaf spring has broken even though you haven't been hauling heavy loads. You noticed there was a previous recall for this same issue on 2011 models, and your 2012 model appears to have similar construction that may be prone to the same failure. The leaf spring will likely need to be replaced to restore proper suspension support and handling.

mediumSUSPENSION
Filed: Jun 2021

You're asking whether there's a recall available for the leaf springs on your 2012 Toyota Tacoma. Leaf springs are part of your truck's suspension system that help support the vehicle's weight and absorb bumps from the road.

Filed: May 2025

Your truck's steering occasionally locks up when you're turning, which can make the vehicle difficult to control. You've noticed this happening to multiple other trucks as well, and it only occurs during curves. This is a serious safety concern that needs immediate investigation to prevent an accident.

NHTSA #: 11662570

Filed: Aug 2023

Your power steering suddenly stopped working completely while you were backing up to park, with no warning lights or messages to alert you beforehand. The steering became extremely difficult to control, and you had to use significant effort to drive to a mechanic. Your mechanic has ordered a replacement power steering unit to fix the issue.

CrashFiled: Jul 2021

Your truck's accelerator suddenly engaged on its own while you were trying to park, causing the vehicle to accelerate uncontrollably. The truck crossed multiple curbs, a road, and a fence before going down a retaining wall into a wooded area. This is the second time your truck has experienced unexpected acceleration—the first incident was reported to Toyota in August 2019, but Toyota's investigation of the black box data found no evidence of a mechanical problem.

NHTSA #: 11423411
highUNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Sep 2021

Your truck's frame has developed rust that has eaten completely through the metal in multiple locations. This is a structural integrity issue that will require professional inspection and repair. Fixing this typically involves cutting out the rusted sections and welding in new steel reinforcement panels.

Power Train2 issues
highPOWER TRAIN
Filed: Dec 2024

Your truck vibrates noticeably while driving at highway speeds (starting around 45-55 mph), and this vibration has gotten progressively worse over time and higher speeds as mileage increased. The dealership determined your driveshaft was out of balance and needed replacement. A failing driveshaft can potentially cause serious vehicle damage and safety hazards, so this issue should be addressed promptly.

NHTSA #: 11632871
mediumPOWER TRAIN
Filed: Nov 2022

Your Tacoma is experiencing vibration in the drivetrain and a chirping noise that sounds like crickets, likely coming from the propeller shaft. This could indicate a worn or damaged component in the driveline that needs inspection. You may notice this more when accelerating or at certain speeds. The propeller shaft or its bearings may need to be repaired or replaced.

NHTSA #: 11493240
Seats1 issue
criticalSEATS
CrashFiled: Jan 2026

During a rear-end collision, your driver's seat suddenly reclined backward on impact, and the recliner adjustment handle detached. Because the seat moved unexpectedly during the crash, your body position changed and your front airbag and seatbelt may not have protected you as intended, potentially increasing the risk of head and neck injury. The driver experienced brief loss of consciousness and significant neck stiffness after the accident. The seat's reclining mechanism may need to be inspected and repaired or replaced to ensure it stays locked during a collision.

NHTSA #: 11714538
Air Bags1 issue
criticalAIR BAGS
CrashFiled: Jan 2026

Your Tacoma was involved in a serious rollover accident at highway speed after losing traction on slush. The side curtain airbags deployed on both sides, but the front airbags failed to deploy despite the severity of the crash. You also reported a previous parking lot collision where the airbags didn't deploy. This suggests a potential defect in the front airbag system that should be investigated by a Toyota dealer immediately.

NHTSA #: 11710917
Wheels1 issue
criticalWHEELS
CrashFiled: May 2025

Your rear driver-side wheel rim detached while driving at 40 MPH, causing your truck to veer right and accelerate on its own. The vehicle went up an embankment, hit a tree, and flipped onto the passenger side. Both front airbags and side curtain airbags deployed, but fortunately there were no injuries. The wheel rim detachment likely caused a loss of control that led to the crash, and the issue will need to be inspected to determine why the rim came loose from the axle.

CrashFiled: Dec 2022

Your truck suddenly lost power while driving at 60 mph, forcing you into a ditch to stop. After the mechanic replaced the rack and pinion steering component, the check engine light came on. Multiple mechanics have refused to continue repairs due to extensive rust and corrosion throughout the vehicle, citing liability concerns that rust damage could spread to other components during repair work. Addressing this issue will require both identifying why the engine lost power (likely through diagnostic codes) and managing the underlying rust corrosion that's preventing repair shops from safely working on the vehicle.

highELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Jan 2026

You discovered a significant mileage discrepancy on your 2012 Toyota Tacoma after purchase. The odometer showed 51,350 miles when you bought the vehicle, but registration revealed the actual mileage was 212,400 miles—indicating the odometer may have been rolled back or tampered with. This is odometer fraud, which affects the vehicle's true wear and maintenance history. Addressing this will likely require reporting to authorities and potentially seeking legal remedies through your state's consumer protection laws.

Filed: Jul 2025

Your 2012 Tacoma's undercarriage has developed significant rust damage. You noticed a fluid leak in your driveway, and an independent mechanic found that the transmission lines have fractured due to rust—this is the source of the leak. The TPMS warning light has also been illuminated, and while the dealer repaired it once under warranty, the problem returned. The rear bumper and brackets are also rusted, but the dealer says these aren't covered by recall or warranty. Fixing this will likely require replacing the rusted transmission lines and possibly other corroded undercarriage components.

NHTSA #: 11677221

highSTRUCTURE
Filed: Dec 2023

Your truck has developed significant rust underneath, with a hole now visible in the structure. You've been told this is a known issue affecting your model year, and while a Toyota dealership should address it given the extent of rust, they've only quoted you a repair price rather than offering a replacement. Driving the vehicle with structural rust and a hole could pose a safety risk.

CrashFiled: Sep 2023

Your truck has developed extensive rust on the frame, and Toyota refused to honor the recall repair. Despite having your vehicle for nearly a year, the dealership made no progress on the issue and never communicated with you about the denial. You've noticed that a 2005 model in similar condition shows significantly less rust damage, and you're aware of multiple other Texas Tacoma owners reporting the same problem despite Toyota claiming it passed inspection.

highFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Sep 2023

Your check engine light came on and your truck lost power while accelerating, especially uphill, making it unsafe to drive on highways. You couldn't go faster than 20 mph in areas requiring 40+ mph speeds, creating a traffic hazard with no safe place to pull over. A mechanic diagnosed a faulty air injection system and quoted nearly $3,000 to repair it. The fix will likely involve replacing or rebuilding the air injection system components.

highENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Filed: Aug 2022

Your 2012 Tacoma may be stuck at a top speed of 45 MPH, with the check engine and traction control warning lights staying on. A dealer diagnosis found that your air injection pump needs to be replaced, which is related to a manufacturer service campaign (20TC01) that has since expired. Replacing the air injection pump should restore normal engine performance and turn off the warning lights.

Filed: Sep 2021

Your truck is experiencing warning lights on the dashboard and unintended drifting on slippery roads, then the lights disappear and it drives normally once you regain control. You discovered this matches a known Toyota recall issue, but your dealer says your specific truck isn't covered by that recall. The problem appears related to your brakes and stability control system, and needs professional diagnostic service to identify the root cause.
