Risk: An incorrect label may lead to unintentionally overloading the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: SET will notify owners and provide a corrected label for placement over the inaccurate label, free of charge. The recall began August 23, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. SET's number for this recall is SET19A.

Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:12V/24V/48V BATTERY

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2013-2018 RAV4 vehicles. Certain replacement 12-volt batteries may not fit properly in the battery tray, allowing the battery to move and contact the hold-down bracket, possibly causing a short circuit.

Risk: A battery short circuit increases the risk of a fire.

Fix: Dealers will replace the battery clamp sub-assembly, battery tray, and positive terminal cover, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed December 27, 2024, to 2013-2014 RAV4 owners. Additional owner notification letters will be mailed in phases, phase 2 will begin on May 14, 2025, and phase 3 in late July 2025. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Your car is subject to a recall due to a defective battery that could potentially cause an electrical short circuit and fire risk. As of August 2025, Toyota has been unable to complete the repair or battery replacement. You should continue attempting to schedule service with Toyota to address this safety issue.

Your battery is covered in corrosion and leaking acid into the battery tray, which can damage electrical components and create a safety hazard. Toyota has issued a recall for this issue (Campaign 23V734000) but may not cover battery replacement under warranty. The battery tray will likely need to be replaced along with the battery to fully resolve the problem.

Your 2018 RAV4 has an open recall for the battery, but when you took it to the Toyota dealer, they told you they would only fix the recall if you first purchased and installed a size 36 battery—even though your owner's manual specifies a size 35 battery and the recall notice doesn't mention this requirement. You've had to replace the battery three times since 2021 and have experienced other electrical problems, which you believe are related to this issue. The fix would involve either clarifying the recall coverage requirements with Toyota corporate or having the dealer perform the recall repair with the correct battery size for your vehicle.

Your 2018 RAV4 experienced a severed wiring harness that prevented the engine from starting, with no warning light to alert you beforehand. Your dealer was unable to complete the recall repair (Campaign 23V734000) because the necessary parts were unavailable. The vehicle remains unrepaired as of this report.

Your 2018 RAV4 lost electrical power while parked without any warning lights appearing. Even though the vehicle was repaired under a Toyota recall (Campaign 23V734000), the problem happened again after the repair. This occurred at 7,000 miles. The issue may require Toyota to diagnose why the recall repair didn't permanently resolve the electrical power loss.

You brought your 2018 RAV4 to a Toyota dealership on June 24, 2025 for a battery mount recall repair. The dealership scheduled the appointment but didn't have the battery mount part in stock, leaving the recall incomplete even after you spent over $900 on maintenance. Three months later, you still haven't received a call that the part is available, and you're questioning whether this delay meets recall repair requirements.

Your car caught fire while parked at a shopping center, and the Fire Department determined it was an electrical fire. You had not received any recall notice or warning call from Toyota before the fire occurred, only being contacted after the vehicle was already damaged.

Your transmission isn't working properly, and you've already visited three repair shops including two transmission specialists who say you need a complete transmission replacement. Your 2018 RAV4 only has 115,000 miles and no check engine light, yet you're being told this model year has widespread transmission problems with over 100 units on backorder. A transmission replacement typically involves removing the old unit and installing a new or rebuilt transmission.

Your automatic liftgate either fails to close all the way or closes very slowly, making it difficult to secure cargo—especially concerning when loading at night. You've already tried Toyota's official recalibration steps without success. This could be a safety issue if items aren't properly secured while driving.

Your sunroof's glass spontaneously shattered into large chunks and small shards while you were driving on the highway in normal weather conditions with no apparent cause like road debris. Glass scattered throughout your back seat and caused cuts on your hands during cleanup. The repair will likely involve replacing the entire sunroof glass panel and inspecting the sunroof frame and seal for defects.

Your tailgate won't open all the way, even though the hinges appear fine. The issue is likely with the gas strut (the spring-loaded cylinder that holds the tailgate up) or a sensor that controls how far it opens. Getting this fixed will probably involve replacing the gas strut or checking the tailgate open sensor.

CrashFiled: Mar 2026

Your 2018 RAV4 was involved in a three-impact collision (hit from behind at 65+ mph, pushed into a truck ahead, then hit a guardrail) with extensive damage to the rear, front, and right side. Despite the severe crash, the airbags did not deploy. The driver sustained injuries including a black eye, cut lip, and head trauma from hitting the steering wheel, while both occupants experienced whiplash and interior contact injuries. Airbag system inspection and replacement will likely be necessary, along with a full diagnostic of the airbag sensors and wiring.

Filed: Nov 2025

Your steering wheel suddenly locked completely without warning while driving, making it impossible to steer and leaving you stranded. The Toyota dealership identified a failed steering lock ECU (electronic control unit) as the cause, which is a critical safety component that should prevent this type of failure. There were no warning lights or signs of trouble before this happened. The repair requires replacement of the steering lock ECU module.

Your 2018 RAV4 suddenly surged forward while you were parking, crashing through your carport wall and into your neighbor's fence without you pressing the accelerator. The airbags did not deploy during the impact, and you experienced soreness in your neck, shoulders, and back. The manufacturer has been notified and can send an engineer to investigate whether there's a defect in the powertrain or electrical system that caused the unexpected acceleration.

CrashFiled: Jul 2025

While stopped at a traffic light, your RAV4 suddenly accelerated on its own and hit the vehicle in front of you, even though you had your foot on the brake. The engine revved during this acceleration, and the car continued moving forward for about 20 feet. This same problem happened again at another stop, where you had to press the brake pedal very hard to stop the car after it traveled another 20 feet. No warning lights appeared, and the airbags did not deploy.

Your power liftgate has started to fail and become misaligned, making it impossible to close completely. The misalignment has also damaged your rear passenger tail light. You're currently unable to drive with the liftgate fully closed until you can afford repairs, which have been quoted at around $2,000.

Filed: Nov 2025

Your 2018 RAV4 AWD experiences noticeable shuddering in the transmission between 25–50 mph when you apply light throttle. Toyota technicians have confirmed this is a torque converter issue, and Toyota has already extended warranty coverage for this same problem on earlier RAV4 models (2013–2015), but your 2018 model was excluded from that program. A full transmission replacement is being quoted at around $9,000. Resolving this issue will likely require torque converter replacement or a full transmission rebuild at a Toyota dealership.

CrashFiled: Aug 2025

Your car's passenger side mirror and the windshield support column create a large blind spot on the right side that makes it difficult to see vehicles or objects when turning right. You may not be able to see even a full-sized car in this area. You were involved in an accident when you hit a fire hydrant while turning right because of this visibility issue. The fix may involve adjusting the mirror angle, replacing the mirror assembly, or having the windshield support column inspected.

Filed: Mar 2026

Your headlights and taillights have developed a white, stained residue on the inside of the lenses that's making it hard to see clearly. The problem is internal to the lights, not on the outer surface. This will likely require replacement of the affected light assemblies or professional restoration to clear the internal condensation or oxidation.
