NHTSA Campaign: 16V096000

Component: SEAT BELTS:REAR/OTHER

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2006-2012 RAV4 vehicles manufactured July 28, 2005, to December 19, 2012, and 2012-2014 RAV4 EV vehicles manufactured July 24, 2012, to August 29, 2014. In the event of a frontal collision, the rear seat belts for the outboard seats may be cut by the seat cushion frame.

Risk: A cut seat belt may not properly restrain the seat occupant, increasing their risk of injury in a crash.

Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will install a protector over both rear seat cushion frames, free of charge. The recall began on June 24, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is G0F.

NHTSA Campaign: 16V596000

Component: SUSPENSION:REAR

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2006-2011 Toyota RAV4 vehicles manufactured October 31, 2005, to September 7, 2010, and 2010 Lexus HS250h vehicles manufactured July 6, 2009, to August 26, 2010. The affected vehicles have rear suspension arms (rear tie rods) with adjusting lock nuts that may have been improperly tightened after servicing. As a result of being loose, the arm may have thread damage and may rust, possibly leading to the failure of the arm and an abrupt change in the vehicle's alignment.

Risk: Failure of the rear tie rod could cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Toyota will notify owners and dealers will replace both rear suspension arms and encapsulate the locknuts, free of charge. The recall began on September 30, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are G0V for Toyota vehicles and GLK for Lexus vehicles. Note: This recall supersedes recall 13V-383, in which some vehicles were only inspected, sealed, and did not have both arms replaced. The affected vehicles were previously recalled under 13V-383, but did not have both rear suspension arms replaced at that time. Those vehicles need to have both arms replaced as part of this recall remedy.

NHTSA Campaign: 15V577000

Component: VISIBILITY/WIPER

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2009-2012 RAV4 vehicles manufactured October 27, 2008, to December 19, 2012 and 2012-2014 RAV4 EV vehicles manufactured July 24, 2012, to August 29, 2014. In the affected vehicles, water may drip onto the joint that connects the wiper linkage to the wiper motor.

Risk: Over time, the dripping water may cause corrosion and wear at the joint, potentially resulting in the separation of the wiper linkage. Once this occurs, the wipers would not function, reducing driver visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the water diverter channel. In addition, a new wiper linkage with a wiper motor crank arm will be installed. The wiper linkage will have a protective cover over the wiper linkage joint to minimize water splash and a retainer ring to prevent the wiper arm from separating from the wiper motor. The recall began on November 7, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service number at 1-800-331-4331.

NHTSA Campaign: 13V014000

Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4; model year 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year Corolla, Sienna and Tundra; model year 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza; model year 2012 Prius V; and model year 2010-2012 Sequoia. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Your 2009 Toyota RAV4's Blizzard Pearl paint is peeling and degrading across multiple areas of the vehicle. Toyota issued a recall notice in 2022 that would have covered these repairs, but you weren't aware of it at the time. Toyota is now declining responsibility because the recall period has expired. Addressing this issue will likely require repainting affected areas or applying protective coatings to prevent further paint failure.

Your car has a paint defect that was confirmed by the dealership twice (in April 2021 and December 2022), and you submitted photos both times. You dropped the car off for repainting on 1/23/2023 expecting it to take about 1.5 weeks, but when you picked it up on 2/21/2023, the dealership refused to repair it and said they would not honor the recall.

The paint on your white 2009 Toyota RAV4 is peeling off in large sheets, particularly on the roof, leaving bare spots that are starting to rust. The dealership manager told you not to have it repaired and said they would submit a recall request, but more than two years have passed without any response or update despite asking at each service visit. The rust is spreading and the roof damage could eventually lead to leaking.

Your car's paint is peeling off very easily from minor contact, like branches rubbing against it. This has created several bare spots on the body that are starting to rust. The paint quality seems defective since normal minor bumps shouldn't cause this kind of damage. Addressing this may involve repainting affected areas and applying rust treatment to prevent further corrosion.

While driving on the highway, sheets of paint began peeling off your car's exterior body panels. This is a cosmetic issue that affects the appearance and could expose the underlying metal to rust if left unaddressed. A body shop can address this by sanding down the affected areas and repainting them to match your car's original finish.

Your engine makes a rattling noise when you start it up. This noise is related to the timing chain and variable valve timing (VVT) system. If the timing chain or VVT components fail, it could cause the valves and pistons to collide, potentially resulting in severe engine damage. Fixing this typically requires removing the engine and replacing the timing chain tensioner and VVT components.

Your car's oil warning light started flickering even though you weren't due for an oil change yet. The dealer told you the engine needs to be replaced due to excessive oil consumption. You discovered online that this is a known issue caused by defective piston rings that Toyota acknowledged in a 2011 service bulletin, but the dealer is refusing to fix it under warranty. Addressing this would likely require engine replacement or piston ring repair.

Your check engine light, 4WD light, and traction control light are coming on intermittently and then turning off. This problem has been happening repeatedly over the past two weeks despite multiple dealer visits. The issue is occurring on a RAV4 with low mileage, making it especially frustrating. Your car's rear lower control arms were permanently epoxied as part of a Toyota safety recall, which prevents them from being adjusted during wheel alignment. When you need to align your tires, a mechanic may tell you that both rear lower control arms need to be replaced instead of adjusted, since the epoxy makes adjustment impossible. This means you may face an unexpected out-of-pocket expense to replace these arms rather than simply realign them, potentially affecting your new tires. Fixing this issue would require replacing the epoxied control arms with new ones.

You were notified of a recall (16V596000) affecting your rear suspension arms because the back end nuts couldn't be adjusted. When you contacted the dealership, they claimed the recall had already been completed 3 years ago, but the problem still exists. The fix will involve inspecting and properly adjusting or replacing the rear suspension arm fasteners according to the recall specifications.

NHTSA #: 11402975

Filed: Jan 2022

Your rear lower suspension arms were recalled and replaced, then sealed with epoxy and labeled as non-adjustable. This means you can no longer get routine wheel alignments at independent shops — Toyota recommends going to a dealership instead, which costs around $900 each time. This limits your maintenance options and increases long-term repair costs at authorized dealers.

CrashFiled: Dec 2021

Your RAV4's brakes have failed twice in one month — when applying the brake pedal, the car revved and accelerated instead of slowing down. The first incident occurred in a parking lot at low speed and resulted in a collision with a parked vehicle; the second happened while coasting to a stop light when pressing the brake caused the car to accelerate through a red light. This suggests a problem with the brake system or accelerator control that may require diagnostic testing and replacement of brake or throttle components.

Filed: Nov 2022

Your Toyota dealer performed rear brake service but needed to temporarily remove a previous safety recall modification to access the brakes. You were charged labor costs to remove and then reapply the recall, which you believe should be Toyota's responsibility since the recall was their issue in the first place. The concern is that the recall design makes future brake maintenance more expensive and complicated than it should be.
