Open Safety Recalls (2)
NHTSA Campaign: 13V505000
Component: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:SWITCH/WIRING
Toyota Motor Engineering & manufacturing North America, Inc. (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Camry and Camry HV, model year 2013 Avalon and Avalon HV and model year 2014 Corolla vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the windshield wiper switch assembly may short circuit. As such, these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, No. 104, "Windshield Wiping and Washing Systems."
Risk: A short circuit could cause inoperative windshield wipers, reducing driver visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the wiper switch assembly, free of charge. The recall began on November 8, 2013. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
NHTSA Campaign: 20V024000
Component: AIR BAGS: AIR BAG/RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2011-2019 Corolla, 2011-2013 Matrix, 2012-2018 Avalon, and 2013-2018 Avalon Hybrid vehicles. During certain crashes, the air bag electronic control unit (ECU) may malfunction, possibly disabling the deployment of the air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners.
Risk: In the event of a crash, air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners that do not deploy as intended may increase the risk of injury.
Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ECU and install a noise filter between the air bag control module and its wire harness, as necessary, free of charge. Owners were notified of the safety risk beginning March 2, 2020. A second letter notifying owners of the remedy repair will be mailed between March 16, 2020 and June 27, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 20TB03, 20TA03 and 20TA05.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 265)
Air Bags →3 issues
Your daughter lost steering control while driving at 70 MPH, causing your 2014 Toyota Corolla to roll over and crash into a ditch with severe front-end damage. During the crash, the airbags did not deploy, and your daughter sustained a concussion requiring medical attention. Your vehicle had been previously serviced under a recall (NHTSA Campaign 20V024000) for airbag issues, and this appears to be the same failure described in that recall.

Your airbags failed to deploy during a head-on collision at 165,000 miles, leaving you with a concussion that required hospitalization. The vehicle was not inspected by a dealer or mechanic to determine why the airbags didn't work. The airbag system will need a complete diagnostic inspection and likely replacement of the airbag control module or sensors to restore safety functionality.

You're unable to access Toyota's recall website to schedule service for your airbag recall. This is preventing you from getting the airbag replaced as part of the recall program. You may need to contact Toyota directly by phone or visit a dealership to arrange the airbag replacement.

After getting your car washed, the paint started peeling even though the vehicle only had 42,000 miles. Toyota acknowledged a paint recall and initially offered to repaint it under warranty with a rental car for 1-2 weeks, but when you discovered the recall had expired, the insurance technician promised to call back about coverage and never did. The cost to repaint your vehicle is now $7,000-$14,000, which exceeds the car's value. The fix would involve a complete professional repaint of the affected areas, but warranty coverage appears to have lapsed.

Your car's white paint and clear coat are peeling off in large sections, starting around the windows and door frames and now covering almost half the vehicle. The vehicle is beginning to rust as a result of this paint failure. Toyota has a recall for this issue, but the dealership refused to cover it because the 10-year coverage period is measured from the manufacturer date (October 2013) rather than from when you purchased the vehicle in 2014, even though the problem has worsened in recent months. Resolving this will likely require a professional paint restoration or repainting service to stop the rust progression.

Your car's white paint is peeling off in large sheets and chunks while you drive. The dealer confirmed this is a known issue with white paint on Toyota vehicles from your model year, and said a repair program existed but has expired. Getting this repaired soon could prevent further damage to the underlying surfaces.

Electrical System,air Bags,seat Belts →2 issues
During a frontal collision on March 12, 2025, your car's front airbags failed to deploy despite the impact occurring to the front-left area. Your vehicle is subject to a safety recall (20TA03) for airbag non-deployment caused by the airbag control unit being sensitive to electrical noise during certain crashes. This failure to deploy put you at serious risk of injury during the frontal impact. The fix would require inspection and potential replacement of the airbag control unit and related electrical components.

Back Over Prevention →2 issues
Your backup camera display showed a black screen instead of the rear view while reversing, preventing you from seeing what's behind your car. This created a safety hazard since you couldn't see obstacles or pedestrians. The problem may require diagnosis and repair of the backup camera system, which could involve replacing the camera unit, display screen, or wiring connections.

Your backup camera display intermittently goes black while you're reversing, happening at least twice a week over the past 5 years. You've reported this to your Toyota dealer, who confirmed Toyota is aware of the issue but has not issued a recall for Corolla models, even though a similar recall exists for Tundra trucks. The fix would likely involve replacing or repairing the backup camera system or its display wiring.

Tires →2 issues
Your car's front tires developed bubbles on the outer sidewalls and showed exposed steel belts, causing the vehicle to wobble and shake while driving. Two different tire shops gave conflicting explanations—one blamed a wheel alignment problem, while the other found no clear cause. You may need to have your wheel alignment checked and your front tires replaced, as bubbling sidewalls indicate the tires are no longer safe to drive on.

Your mechanic noticed that the inside edge of your driver's side front tire is heavily worn with what looks like an indentation, possibly caused by a shifted belt. This unusual wear pattern suggests an alignment or tire mounting issue that should be inspected. Getting your wheel alignment checked and replacing the damaged tire will likely be necessary.

Your car's navigation system keeps crashing and won't accept updates, even after multiple dealership visits. This is frustrating because a malfunctioning GPS could potentially direct you to unsafe roads while you're driving. Fixing this will likely involve having the dealership reinstall or replace the navigation system software or hardware.

Unknown Or Other →2 issues
Your car's factory paint is peeling badly and exposing bare metal underneath, which is allowing rust to form. You've been trying to get Toyota to repair it, but they've refused because your warranty expired a couple months ago—even though you say you never received any notification that the warranty was about to expire, which Toyota says they're required to send. The fix would likely involve stripping the damaged paint and repainting the affected areas, plus treating any rust that's already formed.

Your car's radio repeatedly restarts and the display screen is extremely bright, creating a distracting glare while driving at night. The radio also won't recognize USB devices. Toyota dealers want to charge $1,000 to replace the radio entirely, but this may not solve the problem since it appears to be a widespread issue affecting multiple Toyota models.

Air Bags,seat Belts →1 issue
You were in a high-speed collision at a stop sign and reported that your airbags did not deploy during impact. You were wearing your seatbelt but were thrown around the cabin, hitting the rearview mirror with your head, your eye glasses cut your eye, and your hip struck the gear shift, resulting in head knots, eye lacerations, and bruising to your hands, knees, and hip that required ER treatment. You believe the airbag failure contributed to your injuries. The issue likely requires diagnostic testing of the airbag system's sensors, wiring, and deployment mechanisms.

Service Brakes, Air,power Train →1 issue
While driving 45 mph, your car suddenly accelerated on its own when you tried to brake, and the anti-lock braking system didn't engage. This caused you to rear-end the vehicle in front of you. The airbags deployed, and you were injured. Your car was totaled and towed away. This happened at 86,000 miles with no warning lights beforehand.

Engine →1 issue
Your AC system blows hot or warm air when you're idling or driving at low speeds (20-40 mph), which is especially uncomfortable during hot Texas summers with children in the car. An automotive shop has checked for leaks, evacuated and recharged the refrigerant, but the problem persists with no leaks found. There's a known technical service bulletin (TSB T-SB-0086-14) covering this issue under a 3-year warranty, though your vehicle may be outside that coverage window now.

Electrical System,air Bags →1 issue
Your car's radio isn't working, but the display light stays on and is very bright, making it difficult and dangerous to drive. The bright light is distracting while you're on the road. The issue may involve the radio unit's power supply or display circuit and might require replacement or repair of the radio head unit.
