Component: AIR BAGS: AIR BAG/RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2011-2019 Corolla, 2011-2013 Matrix, 2012-2018 Avalon, and 2013-2018 Avalon Hybrid vehicles. During certain crashes, the air bag electronic control unit (ECU) may malfunction, possibly disabling the deployment of the air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners.

Risk: In the event of a crash, air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners that do not deploy as intended may increase the risk of injury.

Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ECU and install a noise filter between the air bag control module and its wire harness, as necessary, free of charge. Owners were notified of the safety risk beginning March 2, 2020. A second letter notifying owners of the remedy repair will be mailed between March 16, 2020 and June 27, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 20TB03, 20TA03 and 20TA05.

Your airbags failed to deploy during a collision in 2024, leaving you unprotected during the crash. You required emergency room treatment and ongoing rehabilitation as a result. The airbag system will need to be inspected and repaired by a Toyota dealer to identify why the bags didn't activate.

CrashFiled: Mar 2024

Your 2016 Corolla was rear-ended at about 45 MPH, but the airbags did not deploy during the impact. You were injured and treated for whiplash at the hospital. The vehicle has not been inspected by a dealer or independent mechanic, so the reason for the airbag failure is unknown. A mechanic will need to diagnose the airbag system to determine what prevented deployment and repair or replace the faulty components.

Your daughter's 2016 Corolla was involved in a high-speed crash into a concrete support beam on the expressway after being stolen. The front end sustained significant damage, but the airbags failed to deploy during the impact. The vehicle was declared a total loss by insurance, and the dealer did not perform any diagnostic work to determine why the safety system didn't activate.

Your airbags failed to deploy during a crash, resulting in serious injuries that required a 4-day hospital stay in the ICU. This is a critical safety system failure that prevented the airbags from protecting you during the accident.

Filed: Dec 2025

Your 2016 Toyota Corolla's Check Engine light came on due to a CVT transmission failure affecting the torque converter clutch and valve body (code P2757). Toyota has a technical service bulletin acknowledging this specific defect, and the dealer quoted $11,000 for repairs. A failing transmission can slip, hesitate, or lose power unexpectedly, creating a safety risk. The repair will likely require transmission replacement or major internal component service.

CrashFiled: Nov 2025

Your driver's side seat belt doesn't work reliably—it only latches occasionally, and even when it does, your dashboard still shows the belt as unfastened and the warning chime continues until it stops on its own, though the warning light stays on. After a rear-end collision, your airbags did not deploy. Additionally, your radio won't turn off when you shut off the car (forcing you to remove the fuse to prevent battery drain), and your key fob won't lock or unlock the doors—you have to use the physical key on the driver's door instead. These issues likely involve inspection and repair of the seat belt pretensioner system, airbag control module, and the vehicle's electrical/power distribution system.

Steering,power Train1 issue
criticalSTEERING,POWER TRAIN
Filed: Mar 2025

While driving, your car unexpectedly downshifted and your steering wheel suddenly became difficult to turn, with no warning lights appearing on your dashboard. An independent mechanic found that both the steering module and transmission had failed and needed replacement, though neither the mechanic nor the dealer were able to repair the vehicle. The repairs would likely involve replacing the steering control module and transmission assembly.

Filed: Feb 2025

Your car shudders and vibrates during acceleration, knocks when backing up, and shifts hard side-to-side with wobbling in the floorboard when turning—making it feel like you've lost control of the vehicle. You're experiencing significant loose play in the front end and steering, difficulty accelerating uphill and on freeways, and poor handling in rain. Toyota replaced the control arms but the problems persist, and multiple independent mechanics have confirmed major safety issues despite Toyota's refusal to adequately repair them. This likely requires a comprehensive front-end suspension and steering system inspection, possibly including replacement of suspension components, wheel alignment, and brake system evaluation.

CrashFiled: Mar 2024

Since November 2023, your car has experienced multiple electrical issues that concern you: passenger windows move up and down on their own, speakers have static, the steering wheel locks while driving, your battery drains despite no obvious cause, doors unlock unexpectedly, the car beeps as if someone accessed it, and the trunk opens on its own. You believe these issues may indicate unauthorized access to your vehicle's electrical system. Addressing this will likely require a full electrical system diagnostic and inspection for any external tampering or wiring issues.

FireFiled: Jun 2023

While your car was parked and turned off for about 65 hours, an explosion occurred on the passenger side involving the airbag and/or electrical systems. The explosion caused a fire that melted the dashboard, charred the ceiling, damaged the windshield from the inside, and left airbag material scattered inside. There were no warning signs before this happened, and the car was not in any accident.

Filed: Aug 2024

Your 2016 Toyota Corolla is making a loud whining and rattling noise from the front of the engine, and a Toyota dealership technician diagnosed it as a failing transmission chain that requires a complete transmission replacement. The noise started suddenly without any warning lights or error codes and is getting progressively louder, despite your vehicle having regular maintenance and 87,000 miles. The dealership says the transmission must be replaced to safely continue driving the car.

Filed: Aug 2023

Your 2016 Corolla has had recurring issues with older parts installed on a new vehicle, including tires over a year old that dry-rotted prematurely and air intake components meant for previous model years. Your car's check engine light has come on repeatedly since 2016, with dealers only clearing the code without investigating; it now appears to be a faulty charcoal canister that was subject to a 2015 recall, yet was never properly diagnosed during warranty service visits. You're now facing an $800+ repair bill after warranty expiration for a problem that should have been caught during your previous dealership visits. The repair will likely involve replacing the charcoal canister and possibly inspecting other emissions system components.

Filed: Sep 2025

Your car's radio and dashboard clock keep resetting on their own, and your tire pressure warning light turns on and flashes even though your tires may be fine. This appears to be a known issue affecting multiple model years of this vehicle. The problem likely stems from an electrical system malfunction that's causing power interruptions to these components.

Your car's paint is peeling and the clear coat is flaking off, starting from the roof and spreading to the hood and trunk. You've noticed the same problem on other Corollas in your area, and while Toyota service found two white Corollas with the same defect under recall, your red Corolla wasn't included despite having identical paint damage. Addressing this will likely require a full repaint and clear coat application by a professional.

Filed: Jun 2024

Your 2016 Corolla is making a rattling noise on the right side during slow speeds and turns. A repair shop found that the control arm bushings had stress cracks and the sway bar end links and bushings were leaking, which you had repaired for $2,400, but the noise returned the next day. Even after replacing the control arms and stabilizer bar links as specified in Toyota's Technical Service Bulletin, the problem persists and you may need strut replacement next. The repair will likely involve replacing suspension components like struts, control arm bushings, and sway bar links.

Your 2016 Corolla is making a knocking noise from the front of the car that gets worse when you drive. A repair shop replaced worn suspension parts and documented the work with photos, and one issue matched a Toyota Technical Service Bulletin, but the knocking noise is still there. The repair shop has records of the worn parts they found. A mechanic will need to inspect the front suspension system again to identify what's still causing the noise.
