While stopped at a red light with your wipers running, your car displayed warning messages about low steering power and low battery, then your steering wheel locked completely and wouldn't turn. You also couldn't accelerate. After restarting the car, it worked again. This has happened twice, though Toyota says there's no issue.

Filed: Feb 2024

Your car's check engine light turns on and beeps with a "power steering low" message, then the engine shuts down while you're driving, leaving you unable to continue. You have to turn the car completely off, lock it, unlock it, and restart it to get it working again. This happens multiple times during your commute, often in traffic without warning, creating a safety hazard. The Toyota dealership has checked it four times but found no issue. Diagnosing this will likely require a complete electrical and engine control system scan, plus a power steering system inspection.

Filed: Oct 2023

Your car shut off suddenly while you were waiting to turn left in traffic, triggering a loud alarm and illuminating both the check engine light and steering pressure warning light. The dashboard instructed you to press the brake firmly to restart, but the car wouldn't start on the first attempts—it took three tries to get it running again. This unexpected shutdown with no prior warning left you stranded in heavy traffic. A full diagnosis by your service department will be needed to identify what caused the engine to shut down and trigger the steering and engine warning systems.

While driving in the rain with your wipers and headlights on, your car's auto stop/start feature caused the engine to stall at a traffic light. When this happened, you lost power steering, saw orange turn signal lights on the dashboard, and heard constant beeping with a message telling you to press the brake to restart. Pressing the brake didn't work, and the car wouldn't move, leaving you stuck in traffic. You had to manually turn off and restart the engine to regain control. This happened twice in similar rainy conditions. The fix may involve diagnosing the auto stop/start system's interaction with the electrical system, power steering, and potentially updating or replacing related sensors or modules.

Filed: May 2023

Your engine has shut off 4 times while stopped at red lights, displaying error messages like "Engine Stopped, Steering Power Low" and "Engine Stopped Press Brake Firmly to Restart." When this happens, pressing the brake doesn't restart the engine—you have to shift to park and press the start button manually. The dealership hasn't found any diagnostic codes and can't reproduce the problem, even though you have videos documenting it. The issue may be related to the windshield wipers, though it happened 3 out of 4 times without them running. A fix will likely require the dealership to perform advanced electrical diagnostics and possibly reprogram or replace engine control modules or power steering control systems.

While making a U-turn and braking for a traffic light, your engine suddenly shut off and your steering wheel locked up completely. You had to shift to Park and restart the engine, then shift back to Drive to get the car moving and regain steering control. This issue resolved after restarting, but it's a serious safety concern that could happen again.

While stopped at a red light in your brand new 2023 Corolla Cross, the car suddenly shut down, locked the steering wheel, and disabled the brakes without warning — causing your car to roll backward into the vehicle behind you. An alarm sounded and warning lights flashed on the dashboard. After turning the car off and back on, everything returned to normal, but the dealership initially couldn't replicate the problem until you showed them a video. Toyota has identified this as a safety issue related to a software error (code x206d) and is developing a software update to fix it.

Filed: Apr 2023

Your car's engine failed to restart when the traffic light turned green after the Auto Start-Stop feature shut it off while you were idling. Your dashboard showed warning messages like "Engine Stopped - Press Brake Firmly to Restart" and "Power Steering Low," but pressing the brake didn't help. You had to put the car in park and restart it manually to continue driving, which left you stalled in a busy intersection for 30-45 seconds while other cars tried to drive around you. This issue may involve the engine's fuel, electrical, or power steering system, and a dealer should diagnose why the engine won't restart after Auto Start-Stop engages.

Filed: Apr 2023

Your 2023 Corolla Cross may suddenly shut down and lock up while braking at intersections, displaying "Power Steering Low" and brake-related warnings that clear only after restarting the vehicle. You may also experience the steering wheel locking up unexpectedly while driving, aggressive and uncontrolled lane-assist engagement, and repeated "Battery Charging" warnings when trying to use the Stop/Start feature, especially when running wipers or other accessories. The issue appears to be related to electrical system problems affecting power steering and the start/stop feature, though warnings don't always log in the vehicle's diagnostic system, making it difficult for technicians to diagnose. A complete electrical system diagnostic, power steering module inspection, and stop/start system review will likely be needed to identify and resolve the underlying cause.

Your car's engine shut down unexpectedly at red lights, and when you tried to restart it, you got a "low steering power" warning and the steering wheel locked. The car required multiple restart attempts before it would respond, leaving you stranded in moving traffic on busy roads. This happened at least twice in a short period. The issue appears to involve the engine, steering, and electrical systems working together incorrectly.

Filed: Mar 2023

Your 2023 Corolla Cross unexpectedly shut down while you were waiting at a busy intersection in the rain, with the dashboard showing "power steering low. Engine off. Press brake firmly to restart." Restarting didn't work from that screen, so you had to shift to Park and manually restart the engine. This is a critical safety issue because your car shutting down during wet weather prevents you from steering or braking properly and leaves you stranded in traffic.

NHTSA #: 11514785
criticalSTEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Mar 2023

During your first drive in your new 2023 Corolla Cross, the auto start/stop feature shut off the engine at a stoplight. After about 20 seconds, a continuous beep sounded, your dashboard warned of "engine stopped" and "low power steering," and the check engine light came on. The engine wouldn't restart when you pressed the brake, and your steering wheel became completely locked and wouldn't turn, leaving you blocking traffic. After shifting to park and trying the ignition again a few seconds later, the car finally restarted. You noticed the wipers were on when this happened and found similar reports online. The fix will likely involve your dealer diagnosing the electrical interaction between the auto start/stop system, power steering system, and windshield wiper circuit to identify and repair the faulty component or software.

Your car's engine automatically shuts off at red lights as designed, but after 1-3 minutes you're getting error messages saying "Engine stopped" and "Power Steering Low," making it impossible to accelerate through the light. The Check Engine light comes on, and you have to put the car in park, turn off the ignition, wait a minute, and restart it to get moving again—and this happens each time you use the windshield wipers. This is a serious safety issue that needs immediate dealer diagnosis, as you're unable to move through traffic when the light changes.

Filed: Feb 2023

Your new Corolla Cross is stalling out at traffic lights, with warning messages appearing on the dashboard ("Ignition on," "Steering power low," "Engine check") followed by beeping and the car locking up. This has happened 5 times in 2 weeks. The dealership replaced the battery, but the problem happened again 3 days later. The issue may involve the battery, electrical system, or engine control components that need proper diagnosis.

NHTSA #: 11506449
criticalSTEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
Filed: Jan 2023

While stopped at a red light with your foot on the brake, your car displayed an error message about low power steering and told you to press the brake firmly to restart. A buzzer sounded continuously, your steering locked up, and pressing the brake had no effect — you had to shift to Park and restart the engine to regain control. The light turned green while this was happening, leaving you stuck in traffic unable to move safely. The dealer will need to diagnose the power steering and engine control system to identify what triggered this lockup.

highSTEERING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
Filed: May 2025

While stopped at a red light, your car made a loud beeping noise and displayed a "Low power steering" warning before going into limp mode and shutting off. You were able to restart the car and it worked normally afterward, with no warning lights showing. The dealer found an OBD code related to the mass airflow sensor but couldn't recreate the problem and didn't repair anything. The issue may involve the power steering system or the mass airflow sensor needing diagnostic attention or replacement.

NHTSA #: 11659779
highSTEERING,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Dec 2023

In November, the engine stalled at a light when it was raining and the wipers were on. Warning noises were activated and the console read "steering Power Low." The car had to be pushed out of the intersection by other drivers. After a half hour the car was able to be restarted .

NHTSA #: 11562688
highSTEERING,LANE DEPARTURE
Filed: Sep 2023

Your Lane Tracing Assist system is steering too aggressively on tight curves, pulling toward the center line on left turns and toward the edge on right turns. The system recognizes it's drifting (it triggers the warning) but still pulls hard in the wrong direction, forcing you to actively fight the steering wheel to stay in your lane. This has been happening since you bought the car new and occurs on smaller-radius curves at highway speeds (45-60 mph). The fix will likely involve recalibrating or updating the Lane Tracing Assist system software or sensors.

NHTSA #: 11546176

Filed: Sep 2023

Your car's engine shut off multiple times while you were stopped in traffic with the wipers running in rainy conditions, and the dashboard showed a "low steering power" warning. This created a dangerous situation since other vehicles were behind you and you lost the ability to steer properly. The issue may be related to the electrical system not providing enough power to the steering system when multiple accessories like wipers are running simultaneously. A technician will need to check your battery, alternator, and power steering system to restore normal operation.

Filed: May 2023

While driving in the rain with your wipers on, your car's auto start/stop feature shut down the engine at a red light. When the light turned green and you tried to drive, the engine shut off completely and you saw warnings about low steering power and the need to press the brake firmly to restart. Restarting the engine through the normal restart procedure didn't work, so you had to shift to park, turn the car completely off, and turn it back on to get moving again. The issue likely involves the engine management system, electrical power distribution, or the auto start/stop feature malfunctioning under specific driving conditions.

Filed: May 2023

Your car's engine shut off at a red light due to the automatic stop/start system, but when you tried to accelerate, the car became unresponsive and displayed an "Ignition OFF" warning message while beeping and flashing dashboard lights for about 3 minutes. The issue appears to occur when the stop/start system and windshield wipers are both active at the same time, which is problematic since your car automatically re-enables stop/start every time you start it. A fix would likely involve a software update from Toyota to prevent this conflict between the two systems, or possibly a firmware recalibration of the engine management and electrical control modules.
