VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH CRUISE CONTROL AND V6 ENGINES, AND BUILT AT ONE OF TWO LINES AT THE KENTUCKY PLANT. THE ACCELERATOR CABLE HOUSING COULD BE DEFORMED AT THE CRUISE CONTROL ACTUATOR-TO-THROTTLE BODY CONNECTION. THE ACCELERATOR INNER-CABLE COULD WEAR AWAY AND EVENTUALLY BREAK.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ACCELERATOR CABLE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN FEBRUARY 23, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

Your car accelerated on its own at highway speeds after you turned off cruise control, and the engine was idling roughly with very high RPMs. After investigation, you discovered a piece of paper had gotten past the air filter and jammed the throttle plate, causing the issue. Cleaning or replacing the air filter and inspecting the throttle body should resolve this problem.

ON AUGUST 31, 2011 HIS WIFE DROVE FORWARD AND MOVED TO THE RIGHT TO GET NEAR A CURB, BEFORE BACKING INTO A PARKING SPACE, SHE THEN SHIFTED FROM DRIVE TO REVERSE AND BACKED INTO THE PARKING SPACE, BUT THEN REALIZED SHE WASN'T CLOSE ENOUGH TO THE CURB. SHE SHIFTED FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE, DROVE FORWARD ABOUT 15 FEET AND SHIFTED FROM DRIVE TO REVERSE. EACH OF THESE SHIFTS REQUIRED HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. WHEN THE ACCELERATOR IS STUCK I HAVE TO EITHER FORCE HARDER ON THE PEDAL OR I HAVE TO RELEASE MY FOOT AND THEN HIT THE ACCELERATOR AGAIN WITH A GREATER FORCE TO REMOVE THE PEDAL FROM THE STUCK POSITION CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE HIGHLY WHEN THE PEDAL GETS RELEASED AND WITH MY GREATER FORCE ON PEDAL. I HAVE BEEN RUNNING THE VEHICLE LIKE THIS FOR SOMETIME BUT THIS ISSUE IS FREQUENTLY HAPPENING SO I WANTED TO BRING THIS ISSUE TO YOUR NOTICE AS A SAFETY PROBLEM WITH THE 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY CAR. I FELT THAT IF I WAS DRIVING ANY OTHER ONE OF MY CARS THAT I WOULD HAVE HAD PLENTY TIME TO STOP. WHEN YOU TAKE THE FOOT OF THE GAS ON THIS CAR IT DOES NOT SLOW DOWN AUTOMATICALLY LIKE OTHER VEHICLES. WHEN I FIRST GOT THIS 1999 TOYOTA SOLARA I GOT A TICKET FOR NOT STOPPING AT A STOP SIGN. THERE TO I ALSO THOUGH I HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO STOP, BUT IT SEEMS LIKE THE ENGINE IS FIGHTING AGAINST THE BRAKE WHEN I TRY TO STOP. SINCE THEN WHEN I COME UP TO A STOP SIGN I START BRAKING MUCH FURTHER BACK THAN I US TO. EVEN WHEN I'M STOPPED AT 700 RPM, THE CARS SEEM TO WANT TO START GOING. I ALWAYS THE FIRST ONE TO START OFF WHEN A STOP LIGHT , BECAUSE AS SOON AS I TAKE MY FOOT OF THE GAS THE CARS GOES 5 MPH WITH OUT EVEN PUTTING MY FOOT ON THE GAS. THE DRIVE-ABILITY OF THIS CAR IS THE SAME AS OWNING A 1970'S PUMPED OUT MUSCLE CAR. I HAVE ALSO NOTICED THAT ON THE NEWER CAMRY BASED TOYOTA CARS THAT THE DISC'S ON THE DISC BRAKES ARE TWICE AS BIG AS MY SOLARA'S DISK BRAKES, WHICH MEANS TO ME THAT TOYOTA KNOWS THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THESE BRAKES. APPLYING PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE STOPPED THE CAR IN MOST CASES, BUT ONCE I ENDED UP ACCELERATING AND COULD NOT STOP THE CAR UNTIL I HIT SOME BUSHES ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND STATED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 109,890.

PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THE TWO ACCIDENTS THAT I HAVE EXPERIENCED. I PURCHASED MY TOYOTA CAMRY IN 2003 AND LOVED IT. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR 57 YEARS AND NEVER HAD AN ACCIDENT. ON OCTOBER 11, 2007, I DROVE UP MY DAUGHTER'S DRIVEWAY, CAME TO A STOP (MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE) AND WAS PUTTING MY CAR IN PARK WHEN IT SUDDENLY ACCELERATED INTO AND CRASHED THRU THE CLOSED GARAGE DOOR! I FINALLY CAME TO A STOP AFTER CRASHING INTO THE HOT WATER HEATER AND A WORK TABLE, PUTTING A BIG HOLE IN THE WALL BEHIND IT. A CABINET FELL ON THE DRIVER'S DOOR AND THE BROKEN GARAGE DOOR CLOSED ONTO THE REAR OF MY CAR. LUCKILY I WAS NOT INJURED BEYOND BRUISING AND STIFFNESS. MORE IMPORTANTLY, I AM RELIEVED MY GRANDSON WAS NOT IN THE CAR WITH ME, OR WORSE, HAD NOT COME INTO THE GARAGE WHEN I HONKED FOR HIM. THIS HAPPENED IN SECONDS AND WAS TERRIFYING. MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE THE ENTIRE TIME! TWO YEARS LATER, ON JUNE 16, 2009, I DROVE INTO A JEWELRY STORE IN A STRIP MALL. I PULLED SLOWLY INTO A PARKING SPACE. AGAIN, MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE AS I WAS STOPPING. I ATTEMPTED TO PUT THE CAR INTO PARK. IT SUDDENLY ACCELERATED INTO A LARGE CONCRETE PILLAR, JUMPING THE CURB. AGAIN, MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE. THIS HAPPENED IN A SPLIT SECOND; MY SEAT BELT TIGHTENED AND LOCKED AROUND MY CHEST AND THROAT. I JAMMED MY THUMB, HIT MY LEFT KNEE ON THE STEERING COLUMN AND WAS IN IMMEDIATE CHEST PAIN FROM THE SEAT BELT. MY CAR WAS TOWED TO MY MECHANIC. I WENT TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM AND ALSO SAW MY DOCTOR. I SUFFERED MANY DEEP CONTUSIONS AND IT TOOK SIX WEEKS FOR MY CHEST AND BACK TO HEAL. I AM STILL HAVING NECK AND KNEE PROBLEMS. THIS WAS A HORRIBLY FRIGHTENING EXPERIENCE. WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED HAD THAT CONCRETE PILLAR NOT STOPPED THE CAR??!! WHAT IF PEOPLE HAD BEEN ON THE SIDEWALK OR JUST A COUPLE OF MORE FEET AND THE CAR WOULD HAVE CRASHED THROUGH THE GLASS FRONT OF THE JEWELRY STORE. I PURCHASED A NEW TOYOTA CAMRY IN NOVEMBER 1999. IN 2004 (THE CAR HAS FEWER THAN 45,000 MILES ON IT), WHILE TRAVELING ON A LOCAL HIGHWAY, THE ACCELERATOR BECAME "STUCK". LUCKILY, WE WERE TRAVELING AT A LOW RATE OF SPEED, BECAUSE WE HAD JUST ACCELERATED AFTER LEAVING A RED LIGHT. WHEN I CALLED TOYOTA TO REPORT THE INCIDENT I WAS TOLD THAT I WAS AT FAULT - THAT I SHOULD HAVE HAD THE ACCELERATOR SERVICED. I ASKED IF THERE WERE INSTRUCTIONS IN THE OWNERS MANUAL THAT WARNED OWNERS TO HAVE THE ACCELERATOR SERVICED.DID THE OWNERS MANUAL DISCLOSE THAT THE ACCELERATOR WOULD STICK? THE ANSWER WAS NO. I THEN CONTACTED TOYOTA BY EMAIL AND FULLY DESCRIBED WHAT HAD HAPPENED. THEY ASSIGNED ME A CASE NUMBER AND SENT ME A COUPON FOR $500 OFF MY NEXT TOYOTA. NEEDLESS TO SAY I GOT RID OF THE CAR. UNTIL 2005 I KEPT ALL THE INFORMATION, BUT MY HOME WAS FLOODED IN KATRINA AND I NO LONGER HAVE THE DOCUMENTS. I EVEN CALLED UP TOYOTA AND THEY ARE STATING SINCE MY CAR IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL THEY WOULD NOT FIX IT UNDER THE RECALL. HOWEVER, I THINK MY GAS PEDAL PROBLEM IS THE INITIAL PHASE OF THE OVERALL PROBLEM AND IS VERY SIMILAR TO PROBLEMS STATED BY MANY CONSUMERS WITH THIS ISSUE. THE AUTOMATIC GEAR SHIFT WAS MOVED TO NEUTRAL AND THE ENGINE WENT IMMEDIATELY TO HIGH RPM'S (ABOVE 5,000 RPM). THERE WERE TWO INCIDENTS OF SUDDEN ACCELERATION THAT ON 2/03/99 ONE WAS ON THE FREEWAY. THE SECOND WAS IN HEAVY TRAFFIC FLOW JUST AFTER PEAK HOUR. WEATHER AND DRIVING CONDITIONS WERE VERY GOODTO EXCELLENT..
