Component: STEERING:COLUMN

NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 1996-2004 PATHFINDER AND MODEL YEAR 1997-2003 INFINITI QX4 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD, OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN, CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IOWA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WASHINGTON D.C., WEST VIRGINIA AND WISCONSIN. IN AREAS OF THE COUNTRY IN WHICH HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT ARE USED, A MIXTURE OF SNOW/WATER AND SALT MAY ENTER AN ASSEMBLY LOCATION HOLE IN THE UPPER STRUT HOUSING, CAUSING WATER TO COLLECT AT THE MATING SURFACE OF THE STRUT HOUSING PANEL AND THE INNER HOOD LEDGE ASSEMBLY. OVER TIME, THIS SNOW/WATER AND SALT INTRUSION MAY RESULT IN CORROSION OF THE STRUT TOWER HOUSING IN SOME SUBJECT VEHICLES.

Risk: THE STRUT HOUSING MAY CRACK AND PULL AWAY FROM THE INNER HOOD LEDGE ASSEMBLY. THIS MAY LEAD TO GRINDING NOISES, INCREASED STEERING EFFORT, AND POSSIBLY THE STEERING COLUMN TO BREAK, RESULTING IN THE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.

Fix: NISSAN WILL INSPECT THE STRUT HOUSING AND REPAIR THE VEHICLES AS NECESSARY, FREE OF CHARGE. AN INTERIM NOTIFICATION LETTER WAS SENT OUT IN MAY 2011. THE SECOND NOTICE WAS MAILED ON JULY 25, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

NHTSA Campaign: 96V031000

Component: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:PEDALS AND LINKAGES

DUE TO THE THICKNESS OF THE CARPET PADDING ON THE TRANSMISSION TUNNEL, THE SPACE BETWEEN THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE TRANSMISSION TUNNEL COULD CATCH A DRIVER'S RIGHT FOOT UNDER THE BRAKE PEDAL.

Risk: THIS CONDITION COULD INHIBIT A DRIVER FROM APPLYING THE BRAKES, INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE CARPET PADDING ON THE TRANSMISSION TUNNEL ADJACENT TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL.

Safety RecallFREE FIX AT DEALER

NHTSA Campaign: 96V034000

Component: STEERING:GEAR BOX (OTHER THAN RACK AND PINION)

DUE TO THE TYPE OF LUBRICANT USED IN THE STEERING TRANSFER GEAR ASSEMBLY, THE EFFORT REQUIRED TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL AT LOW AMBIENT TEMPERATURES (LESS THAN -30 C) COULD INCREASE TO THE POINT WHERE SOME DRIVERS WOULD HAVE DIFFICULTY IN TURNING THE WHEEL.

Risk: THIS CONDITION COULD RESULT IN THE INABILITY TO CHANGE THE DIRECTION OF THE VEHICLE WHILE ATTEMPTING TO TURN THE WHEEL, INCREASING THE POTENTIAL FOR A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.

Fix: DEALERS ARE REPLACING THE STEERING TRANSFER GEAR ASSEMBLY WITH A NEW ASSEMBLY HAVING DIFFERENT LUBRICANT.

Your vehicle's rear end sways or rocks side-to-side when driving at highway speeds or changing lanes, making it feel unstable and like it might rollover. Even after replacing the sway bar, shocks, and tires, the problem returned — now occurring mainly during deceleration and increasingly noticeable during city driving. The issue appears to be excessive play in the front and rear suspension that may require inspection of suspension components for wear, damage, or loose connections.

Your Pathfinder experiences dangerous side-to-side shaking at speeds below highway speeds, which could lead to loss of control and a crash. This is a known defect that Nissan dealerships are aware of, but it hasn't been recalled. The repair is expensive, and many owners spend money on incorrect fixes because the real cause isn't widely known by independent mechanics. Fixing this issue typically involves replacing worn or defective suspension components that cause the violent shaking.

NHTSA #: 10701539

Filed: Apr 2014

Your Pathfinder rocks violently side to side at different speeds, with the swaying starting from the rear and feeling like the vehicle might tip over. The problem temporarily improves when you ease off the gas or speed up. This is a serious handling issue that needs inspection by a mechanic to identify worn or failed rear suspension components.

NHTSA #: 10583582

Filed: Feb 2012

Your Pathfinder experiences violent wobbling in the front end, especially at speeds above 50 mph, when turning, or when the back seat is loaded with passengers or cargo—a problem that worsens with weight in the rear. The wobbling feels like a tire blowout and makes the vehicle hard to control; slowing down is the only way to stop it. Replacing tires and struts or installing heavy-duty shocks hasn't solved the issue. This likely requires a complete front-end suspension inspection and realignment, possibly including replacement of control arm bushings, ball joints, or steering components.

Your Pathfinder's front axle assembly rocks and sways heavily at highway speeds, causing violent side-to-side shaking that feels constant and unsafe. You've tried finding replacement parts online and at parts stores but find the dealership price ($700-$1,400) unaffordable. The fix will likely involve replacing the front axle assembly or its internal components.

After having your front suspension repaired under a recall, the strut housing on the driver's side started to detach from your vehicle, causing a knocking sound. The dealer found rust damage on the passenger side strut housing as well. The dealer offered to repair both strut housings or buy back the vehicle, but the manufacturer hasn't confirmed this is a defect.

When your Pathfinder reached about 50 mph, it would shake violently side to side, making it very difficult to control and dangerous to drive. The Nissan dealership found that the rear suspension links and bushings were worn out and replaced all four rear suspension bars to fix the problem. This shaking could potentially cause loss of control at highway speeds.

While driving at 65 mph on the highway, your vehicle suddenly began rolling and shaking violently side-to-side, almost causing you to lose control—even though your steering wheel stayed steady. The body rolling only stopped when you applied the brakes, and this happened multiple times during the trip. After inspection, you noticed severe scuffing on the outside edges of the rear tires, which suggests a problem with the rear axle suspension links. The issue likely requires inspection and replacement of worn suspension components at the rear axle.

Your rear strut is showing rust, and your steering system is making an abnormal popping noise when you drive. A mechanic inspected it but couldn't determine how to fix it, and the manufacturer wouldn't help because of your vehicle's age. Fixing this will likely involve replacing the rusted strut and inspecting the steering components for wear or damage.

Your mechanic found severe corrosion on your front suspension housing and struts during service. You're also experiencing steering wheel vibration when driving at 50 mph. Nissan previously issued a recall (Campaign 11V244000) for steering and suspension on your vehicle, but the repair was never completed. A technician will need to inspect the corroded suspension components and likely replace the affected struts and housing.

Your Pathfinder has multiple aftermarket parts that are old and rusted, causing various systems to fail even after you've replaced many components. You're also having difficulty finding replacement parts specifically made for your 1996 model year, sometimes having to use 1997 Pathfinder parts instead. The rust and age of these aftermarket parts may be affecting your steering, electrical system, and exterior lighting. Addressing this may require replacing corroded aftermarket components with OEM or quality replacement parts designed for your specific model year.

Filed: Jan 2013

When you release the gas pedal while driving at normal speeds, your Pathfinder's rear end sways, shakes, and rocks back and forth as if the rear axle is twisting separately from the vehicle. This swaying happens every time you accelerate or decelerate and when the transmission shifts gears, and you also hear a popping noise from the back when turning corners. The issue likely involves worn or damaged suspension components connecting the rear axle to the frame.

Your Pathfinder was deemed too corroded to repair under a recall and Nissan offered you a free rental car while processing compensation. However, the rental company required you to purchase collision and theft insurance ($9/day) on the new rental vehicle since your personal auto insurance doesn't cover it. Nissan is now refusing to reimburse you for this required insurance, even though it was mandatory for the rental and you wouldn't be liable if the car were stolen.
