Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 2.5L ENGINE, THE CRANK ANGLE SENSOR IS AFFECTED BY TEMPERATURE VARIATIONS. UNDER CERTAIN DRIVING CONDITIONS, THESE VARIATIONS IN TEMPERATURE CAN BE LARGE ENOUGH TO CAUSE A BRIEF INTERRUPTION IN THE SIGNAL OUTPUT FROM THE SENSOR.

Risk: IF THE INTERRUPTION IN THE SIGNAL FROM THE SENSOR IS SO BRIEF THAT THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE (ECM) LOGIC DOES NOT HAVE TIME TO DIAGNOSE THE CONDITION, THE ENGINE MAY STOP RUNNING WITHOUT WARNING WHILE THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN AT A LOW SPEED INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE ECM FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 21, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Your car's frame and undercarriage are severely rusting. There's a hole in the floor board on the passenger side, and when you touch the frame, chunks of metal are falling off. You've also noticed excessive dust getting inside the vehicle from underneath. The rust damage is structural and will need professional repair or welding to prevent further deterioration.

During a recent service, you were told that your car's floor panel has rusted through despite the vehicle having low mileage, regular maintenance, and being garaged part-time. The problem appears to be widespread among 2004 Altimas due to poor drainage design, and repairs can cost over $2,000. Fixing this will likely involve removing and replacing the corroded floor panel sections.

Your car's passenger floor board is rusting through, and there's actually a hole in the floor. This is a structural issue that needs attention to prevent further deterioration and ensure the integrity of your vehicle's floor.

NHTSA #: 10902025

Filed: Jun 2016

Your car's passenger floorboard has rusted completely through, creating a 12" x 10" hole in the area where passengers step into the vehicle. This is a safety hazard since the metal support structure is compromised. The repair will likely require cutting out the rusted section and welding in a new piece of floorboard material.

NHTSA #: 10881420

Filed: Jun 2016

The floor boards under both the driver and passenger seats have rusted completely through, creating holes you can see and feel from underneath the car. If you step too hard on the floor from inside the vehicle, your foot could potentially push through to the ground below. This structural rust issue may require floor pan replacement or welding repairs to restore the vehicle's integrity.

The floor boards and panels underneath your car along the driver and passenger sides have developed rust, which started appearing after just 2 years of normal use despite the vehicle being brand new. The dealership did not address the issue, so you had to pay for the repair yourself without any compensation from Nissan. This appears to be a manufacturing defect in how the underside was protected from corrosion.

Filed: Jun 2023

Your crankshaft position sensor stopped working, which triggered the "service engine soon" warning light. A repair shop found that the sensor wasn't receiving a signal from your engine's computer, and discovered there's a Nissan recall for this exact issue on your vehicle model year — though Nissan initially told you the recall didn't apply, your car was actually built during the recall period and has the same symptoms. The repair will likely involve replacing the crankshaft position sensor and checking the wiring connections to the engine computer.

Your car won't start, and mechanics have found that the engine is sending too much fuel to the catalytic converter, causing it to fail. You've had to replace the catalytic converter multiple times because the problem keeps coming back every couple of months. The issue appears to be related to both the ignition system and exhaust system not working properly together.

Your 2004 Nissan Altima is stalling without warning while driving at various speeds and even when parked. You've had independent mechanics replace the manifold, oxygen sensor, and computer chip, but the stalling keeps happening. This suggests an ongoing electrical or engine issue that hasn't been fully resolved yet. You may need to have the fuel system, ignition system, or additional engine sensors inspected to find the root cause.

Your engine stalls while you're driving, and this happens almost every day. The camshaft sensor has been replaced multiple times, but the problem continues to occur. A mechanic will need to diagnose why the engine keeps stalling, which may involve checking the fuel system, ignition system, or other engine sensors beyond just the camshaft sensor.

Your car is having trouble starting — the engine cranks but won't ignite because the crank sensor isn't working properly. Once you get it running and shift into Drive, the engine shakes violently and then stalls, and your check engine light comes on. The fix will likely involve replacing the crank sensor and possibly checking the ignition system components.

CrashFiled: Jun 2018

Your vehicle was involved in a front collision at 35 mph with only the driver inside. The passenger airbag deployed even though no one was sitting in that seat, while the driver airbag failed to deploy. This suggests a malfunction in the airbag system's deployment sensors or control module that may need diagnostic testing and potential replacement of airbag components.

CrashFiled: Apr 2018

Your car stalled two days before the incident, but seemed fine after restarting. A few hours later, while driving around a hill on a city street, the car suddenly locked up—the oil, brake, and battery warning lights all came on at once, and the brakes stopped working. The steering also failed, and the car couldn't be stopped, resulting in a head-on collision with a tree. You suspect an internal electrical or computer system malfunction caused the engine and steering to lock up unexpectedly. Diagnosing this issue would likely require a full electrical system inspection, battery testing, and computer diagnostic scan to identify what caused the simultaneous failure of multiple critical systems.

Filed: Sep 2023

Your car is having trouble starting and staying running due to fuel system and crankshaft position sensor problems. When the engine does start, it idles roughly and the car may die unexpectedly. The issue likely requires diagnosis and repair of the fuel system components and/or replacement of the crankshaft position sensor.

Your car's sound insulation material is peeling, and more seriously, the floorboards on the driver's side and front passenger side have completely rusted through. Filed: Dec 2016

Your car's floor boards on the driver and passenger sides have extensive rust that's causing pieces to break off or be removed easily, leaving holes and exposed insulation underneath the carpet. You're noticing a smell of gas fumes inside the cabin, and you hear squeaking and cracking sounds from under the driver's seat area when driving over bumps or shifting your weight. The fix will likely require floor board replacement and inspection of the fuel system to address the gas fume smell.

Filed: Aug 2016

Your car won't start and acts like it's not getting fuel, even though it was running fine just before and had only been sitting for 10 minutes. Your mechanic suspects the crankshaft position sensor (CPS) may be the problem. Fixing this typically involves replacing the crankshaft position sensor to restore the engine's ability to start properly.
