Oct 2016

NHTSA Campaign: 16V815000

Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2008-2009 Kia Sportage vehicles manufactured August 9, 2007, to May 13, 2009. The wire harness cover on the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) may be improperly sealed allowing water to get onto the HECU circuit board. If the water is contaminated with salt, such as could occur from melted snow, the wire harness connector pins may corrode and the circuit board may short circuit.

Risk: If the HECU short circuits, there is an increased risk of an engine compartment fire.

Fix: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the connector pins for corrosion, if no corrosion is found, the connector cover will be replaced. If corrosion is present, the dealer will replace the HECU assembly and the connector cover, free of charge. The recall began on November 28, 2016. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC138.

NHTSA Campaign: 13V114000

Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH

Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Rondo, model year 2007-2011 Sedona, Sorento and Sportage, model year 2010-2011 Soul, model year 2008-2011 Optima, model year 2010 Forte, model year 2007-2009 Amanti, and model year 2009 Borrego vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Kia recalled 623,658 model year 2007-2010 Rondo and Sportage, model year 2007-2011 Sorento, model year 2007 Sedona, model year 2010-2011 Soul, and model year 2011 Optima vehicles. In September 2013, Kia informed the agency that it was adding an additional 356,719 vehicles to this campaign. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 980,377. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.

Risk: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of PARK without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Kia will send an interim notification to owners in May 2013. When parts are available, owners will receive a second notification and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall campaign number is SC098.

Your airbag warning light has turned on and off multiple times over the past 6 months—it came on for 2 days, went away, came back on again for 2 days, stayed off for 5 months, and is now on again. While it could be just an electrical issue with the warning light itself, a malfunctioning airbag system poses a serious safety risk if the airbags don't deploy properly in a crash. A dealer diagnostic will need to scan your airbag system's computer to identify whether it's a sensor problem, wiring issue, or actual airbag malfunction.

At around 40,000 miles, your clock spring (the component that allows your steering wheel to connect to the airbag and horn systems) malfunctioned, which disabled both your airbags and horn. This means your airbags won't deploy in a crash and your horn won't work. The fix will involve replacing the clock spring assembly.

CrashFiled: Dec 2019

Your car was in a collision with a deer that caused significant front-end damage requiring radiator, cooling fan, and battery replacement. The airbags did not deploy during the impact, even though the crash was severe enough to warrant their activation. You also noticed that morning that the passenger airbag light on the dashboard was flickering on and off, suggesting a potential electrical or sensor problem with the airbag system.

Your passenger side curtain airbag has a defective control module and won't deploy properly in a crash. Your vehicle has only 53,375 miles and is regularly garaged, well within the normal 5-year/60,000-mile warranty period. Kia has recalled over 507,000 vehicles for airbag defects dating back to 2010, but the dealer denied your warranty claim because you use an independent mechanic instead of their service department. Fixing this will require replacing the airbag module, which costs around $1,956 plus labor and taxes.

Filed: Oct 2023

Your 2009 Kia Sportage is subject to a safety recall (NHTSA Campaign 22V800000) for the brake system, but the required parts haven't been available from your dealer for an extended period. You've also noticed an abnormal sound and discovered that the wiring harness has melted, which suggests an electrical issue related to the brake system. The manufacturer acknowledges the delay but has directed you to contact the dealer for assistance. Repairing this will likely require replacement of the brake hydraulic components and the damaged wiring harness once parts become available.

After your dealer completed recall repairs on your 2009 Kia Sportage, multiple warning lights appeared on your dashboard when you started the vehicle, including lights for the ABS system, tire pressure monitoring, and the HECU (brake control module). The dealer said they could fix it but would charge you a fee, and the manufacturer didn't offer assistance. The issue occurred at about 93,157 miles. Resolving this will likely require diagnostic scanning and repair of the electrical connections or modules related to the brake and tire pressure systems.

FireFiled: Sep 2025

Your car shut off while driving and wouldn't restart, with a burning smell. Weeks later, it caught fire while parked in your driveway. After a recall was issued, the car was deemed a total loss and couldn't be repaired, but you never received compensation. Your car has since disappeared, and you haven't heard from Kia or the recall program about reimbursement. The fix would have involved addressing the electrical and fuel system components that caused the fire hazard.

While your car was idling in park at a grocery store, the engine suddenly died and heavy smoke poured from under the hood with a strong electrical fire smell. Your electrical system appears to have failed completely, including the emergency lights. You discovered there was a recall issued for this model year regarding electrical system fire risk, but your vehicle's VIN wasn't included on the recall list, and the previous owner has no record of the recall being performed. Addressing this will likely require a complete electrical system inspection and possibly replacement of damaged wiring, fuses, and electrical components.

Filed: Mar 2022

Your brake system warning lights (brake light, ESC light, and ABS light) are all on, and your car has a diagnostic code (C2380) that requires replacement of the brake control unit (HECU) under a safety recall. The circuit board in this unit is failing due to moisture exposure from weather conditions. Your dealer initially inspected it in 2017 but made modifications to the brake lines that may complicate the recall repair, and is now refusing to perform the replacement, claiming warranty expiration and prior inspection history exempt it from the recall. Fixing this issue will require replacing the hydraulic electronic control unit (HECU) with a new one that has proper sealing against moisture.

Your brakes lock up when you press the pedal hard, preventing you from stopping when you need to. When you continue pressing hard, the brake pedal drops to the floor and releases all braking pressure, leaving you unable to stop. This problem has been happening off and on for over a year and seems worse when the undercarriage gets wet. Even though a mechanic fully replaced your brakes, the issue persists, suggesting a problem with the anti-lock braking system or its electrical controls rather than the brakes themselves. Diagnosing and repairing the ABS system or its wiring and sensors will likely be necessary to restore proper braking function.

Filed: May 2020

Your car has multiple electrical and steering problems that started soon after purchase. The passenger and rear windows won't operate properly from their switches, the rear hatch won't lock despite making sounds like it's trying, and the driver's side power locks work intermittently. Additionally, your power steering cuts out when starting or turning, you hear squealing from the front, your cruise control is unreliable, and your tire pressure warning light constantly activates. Several mechanics have suggested the serpentine belt and tensioner pulley may be the root cause of these interconnected issues.

Filed: Dec 2019

Your Sportage has a rough idle and stalls randomly, sometimes while driving in traffic. The engine computer and various sensors have been checked and replaced, but the problem keeps returning. The stalling started when you first bought the car in 2009, was fixed temporarily, then came back in 2018 and has persisted since. The fix may involve diagnosing fuel delivery issues, ignition system problems, or additional sensor replacement.
