Engine2 issues
criticalENGINE
Filed: Oct 2020

Your Sportage suddenly accelerated on its own while driving at 55 mph, then repeatedly sped up and slowed down without your control for about 15 miles. The engine stalled at a red light, cut out completely in the middle of the highway, and finally died when you pulled into your driveway. This unpredictable behavior suggests a fuel delivery or ignition system problem that needs immediate professional diagnosis.

NHTSA #: 11365239
highENGINE
Filed: Aug 2019

Your engine is unexpectedly revving to around 2000 RPM even when you're not pressing the accelerator pedal, particularly when braking or going downhill. You've checked for objects stuck under the pedal and verified the accelerator is fully released, but the surging still occurs intermittently. No diagnostic trouble codes are being triggered by your vehicle's computer. The issue may involve a stuck or malfunctioning accelerator pedal, throttle cable, or fuel injection system that needs inspection and adjustment.

NHTSA #: 11242745
Electrical System2 issues
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: May 2024

Your car's cooling fan worked on and off intermittently. When you replaced the fan, you discovered a melted connector and damaged wiring harness underneath. This electrical damage was also causing your radio to change stations on its own and your GPS unit to overheat. Replacing the damaged connector and wiring resolved all of these issues.

NHTSA #: 11586671
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Nov 2019

Your vehicle's electrical control harness failed while driving at highway speed, causing the car to suddenly slow from 60 mph down to 30 mph before returning to normal acceleration. Your check engine light came on at the same time. The dealership confirmed the electric control harness needs to be replaced to fix the problem.

NHTSA #: 11280983
Power Train,engine,fuel/propulsion System2 issues
highPOWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Aug 2019

Your engine has been surging and idling roughly, which led to cleaning the throttle body and idle air control valve. While driving on the highway, your throttle got stuck wide open and you had to manually push it back to normal, then the engine started racing between 3,000-4,000 RPM. After rechecking the idle air control valve at a stop, the idle returned to normal, and no diagnostic trouble codes were found. The idle air control valve will likely need to be replaced to resolve these issues.

NHTSA #: 11243525
mediumPOWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Aug 2019

Your engine was surging to 2000 RPMs whenever you pressed the clutch pedal while driving, but would return to normal if you pulled up on the accelerator pedal with your foot. The throttle body assembly was cleaned at 177,900 miles, and this resolved the surging issue.

FireFiled: Oct 2021

Your 2006 Kia Sportage is making loud grinding noises from the engine that worsen when accelerating, and the sound occurs immediately when you start it. A front tire recently blew out completely, and you've noticed the engine running hot despite adequate coolant levels and what appears to be exhaust system issues. The dealership identified faulty fuel tank straps as a potential cause and scheduled replacement, though this may also require inspection of the engine, exhaust system, and cooling system to diagnose the grinding noise and overheating.

NHTSA #: 11435323
Electrical System,engine1 issue
criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
Filed: Nov 2020

Your car is experiencing multiple electrical issues: it randomly speeds up and slows down on its own, and has shut off completely while slowing down at traffic lights and even while driving 75 mph on the highway. After the most recent shutdown, the car won't start back up. Additionally, your driver's door won't open, forcing you to climb over the seats to exit. These issues suggest widespread electrical problems throughout the vehicle that require professional diagnosis and repair to identify the root cause of the engine shutdowns and electrical failures.

NHTSA #: 11376365
Air Bags,seat Belts1 issue
criticalAIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
CrashFiled: Nov 2020

You were in a side-impact collision while pulling out of a parking lot and hit your head on the windshield despite the airbag and seat belt being in the vehicle. Neither the airbag nor the seat belt prevented contact with the windshield, resulting in a concussion that required emergency room treatment. The repair may involve replacement of the airbag system, seat belt tensioners, and windshield.

NHTSA #: 11375451
Air Bags1 issue
criticalAIR BAGS
Filed: Sep 2019

Your airbag warning light stays on, indicating your airbags may not deploy properly in a crash. This is a safety issue that needs immediate attention. A technician will need to scan your vehicle's airbag system to find the underlying problem.

Fuel System, Gasoline1 issue
highFUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
Filed: May 2023

You notice a strong fuel smell inside your 2006 Kia Sportage when you start it up. You believe this is related to a fuel system recall (Campaign 11V256000), but your vehicle's VIN and model year weren't included in that recall, and the recall was only available in certain states. A dealer inspection confirmed the recall applies to similar vehicles, but your car hasn't been repaired yet.

Suspension1 issue
highSUSPENSION
Filed: Jan 2023

Your 2006 Kia Sportage developed a loud noise from the left rear wheel in July 2020 with 137,296 miles on it. Your mechanic found severe corrosion underneath the vehicle and advised it was hazardous to drive, but the dealership refused to help because the vehicle was out of warranty. The issue may involve rusted suspension components that need inspection and replacement to ensure safe operation.

Service Brakes, Hydraulic,electrical System1 issue
highSERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Apr 2022

Your vehicle's automatic braking system and its electronic control unit failed during a safety inspection at around 115,000 miles. The autolocking brakes and hydraulic electronic control unit (HECU) were not working properly, causing the vehicle to fail inspection. Fixing this will likely involve diagnosing and repairing or replacing the brake control module and related hydraulic components.

Air Bags,engine1 issue
highAIR BAGS,ENGINE
Filed: Dec 2020

Your airbag warning light came on while driving, and two days later your check engine light also came on. Your mechanic suspects a faulty sensor is triggering the check engine light, though getting the replacement part has been delayed due to supply issues. Your mechanic recommends taking your car to a Kia dealership to have the airbag light diagnosed, as they initially thought it might be a recall issue. Fixing this will likely involve replacing the faulty sensor and having the airbag system diagnosed by the dealer.

highELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
Filed: Nov 2019

Your brake lights stay on even when the vehicle is off and parked, draining your battery. Your ESC warning light is also constantly illuminated and your cruise control isn't working. The only way to turn off the brake lights is to disconnect the battery completely. This issue may be related to a known electrical lighting problem, though your vehicle's VIN was excluded from the recall.

Structure,vehicle Speed Control,engine1 issue
highSTRUCTURE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
Filed: Sep 2019

Your accelerator pedal has twisted out of its normal position due to a cracked bolt and damaged threaded hole in the floor where the pedal attaches. This follows previous complaints about the pedal getting stuck. The connection between the pedal and floor has separated, which could affect your ability to control engine speed properly. The repair will likely involve replacing the damaged bolt, repairing or reinforcing the threaded hole in the floor, and reinstalling the accelerator pedal assembly.

highSTRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Aug 2019

Your 2006 Kia Sportage has a recalled gas tank strap that needs replacement, and the dealership also agreed to apply protective undercoating as part of the recall. However, when you brought your car in for the recall service, the technician discovered that your gas tank has severe corrosion along the welded seams and may fall apart if the straps are replaced without also replacing the tank itself. Kia has not approved or paid for a replacement tank despite months of follow-up calls, leaving you unable to complete the recall repair. Resolving this issue will likely require Kia to authorize and cover the cost of a new fuel tank in addition to the strap replacement and undercoating.

Air Bags,vehicle Speed Control1 issue
highAIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Filed: Jun 2019

Your passenger airbag warning light has come on multiple times, and your dealer has only cleared the error code without fixing the underlying problem—the issue appears to be with the sensor inside the passenger seat. Additionally, your speedometer is reading inaccurately, showing a speed that's about 5 mph lower than your actual speed. The dealer will need to diagnose and replace the faulty airbag sensor and check the speedometer circuit to resolve both issues.

Your brake lights stay on even after you turn off the ignition and headlights. To get them to turn off, you have to repeatedly cycle your lights on and off while depressing the brake pedal multiple times. This issue has been happening for over a year. The problem may involve a faulty brake light switch or electrical relay that isn't properly shutting off the brake light circuit.
