NHTSA Campaign: 16V389000
Component: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:HOOD:LATCH
Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2006-2014 Kia Sedona vehicles manufactured from June 15, 2005, through April 04, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the secondary hood latch may bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed.
Risk: If the primary latch is inadvertently released and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Fix: Kia will notify owners and dealers will replace the secondary hood latch or clean and lubricate the latch, depending on the vehicle's location and the condition of the latch. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on July 27, 2016. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall number is SC134.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 38)
Engine →4 issues
While driving, your engine suddenly shut off without warning, causing you to lose power steering. The engine was smoking, and you discovered the oil level was low despite no warning lights appearing beforehand. After adding oil, you heard loud knocking sounds when attempting to restart. The dealership found no oil leaks but estimated $10,000 for diagnostics and engine repair, with potential warranty issues if sludge was discovered.

Your engine is burning excessive oil and producing heavy smoke when starting, a problem that's been ongoing for almost 2 years. Recently, your check engine light came on and the car runs rough and stalls while driving. A repair shop diagnosed this as an internal engine problem and mentioned a Kia recall for Sedona engine issues, though you haven't been able to locate it.

Your engine is consuming more oil than normal, requiring frequent top-ups between scheduled oil changes. This could indicate internal engine wear or a leak that needs diagnosis. A mechanic should inspect your engine for signs of leaks or internal damage to determine the cause and recommend repairs.

Your car makes a strange, bass-like noise coming from the engine when you're stopped at a red light. You've taken it to the Kia dealer twice, but they haven't been able to identify or confirm what's causing it. The dealer may need to perform more detailed diagnostics or monitor the engine while it's idling to pinpoint the source of the noise.

Structure →3 issues
Your sliding passenger doors may fail to latch completely, and can unexpectedly open while driving on the highway, triggering a door alarm. Sometimes the doors won't latch even when parked and powered off, making the van unusable until the issue resets on its own. The problem occurs intermittently, making it difficult to reproduce for dealer diagnosis, though Kia has issued a warranty extension for this issue. Fixing this will likely require the dealer to inspect and adjust or replace the door latch mechanism and its electronic components.

Your passenger-side sliding door won't open properly, and there was no warning light to alert you to the problem. A dealer diagnosed that your sliding door control module needs to be replaced to fix the issue.

Your sliding doors won't lock using the automatic door locks, the power lock buttons on the control panel, or the key fob — they only lock manually. This is a safety concern, especially with children in the vehicle. The issue appears to be with the electronic locking actuators or control system that operates the doors.

Air Bags →2 issues
During a severe front-impact crash on September 28, 2021, your 2014 Kia Sedona's airbags failed to deploy even though the collision was significant enough to total the vehicle and cause it to spin 45 degrees into a tree. No airbag warning lights or recalls had been issued before the accident. A repair would likely involve replacing the entire airbag system, including sensors and deployment modules, to restore this critical safety feature.

Your airbag warning light on the dashboard turns on and off intermittently, then stays on. The Kia dealer diagnosed a faulty passenger occupant sensor in the front passenger seat, but you've noticed the passenger airbag-off indicator responds when you press on the seat, suggesting the sensor may be working. The dealer quoted $1,000 for repair. The fix will likely involve diagnosing whether the sensor itself, the wiring to the sensor, or the airbag control module is causing the warning light.

While driving at 30 mph, you noticed the wiring harness under the front panel of your 2014 Kia Sedona began smoking, with no warning lights appearing on the dashboard. The dealer diagnosed the problem as a faulty blower motor and damaged wiring harness that needed replacement. The repair involved replacing both the blower motor and the wiring harness assembly to resolve the smoking issue.

Your rear hatch latch and the ceiling buttons that control your side doors have stopped working properly. These problems started after a recall service and have been intermittent, though they seem to be getting worse. The dealer believes a software issue may be involved and has suggested waiting for a security software update, but you're frustrated because there's no official recall listed for these specific problems yet.

While driving at 65 mph, you heard a loud explosion from the front passenger side of your 2014 Kia Sedona. Looking in the rearview mirror, you saw glass fragments falling from the vehicle and discovered the sunroof was completely shattered, though there were no warning lights and no signs of impact. The dealer examined the vehicle but did not repair it.

Power Train,electrical System,engine →1 issue
While driving, you noticed fire and smoke coming from the right side of your hood, and your temperature gauge spiked as the engine overheated. After shutting off the car, it started the next morning but ran weakly with a thumping sound. The dealership determined you need a complete engine replacement, which is a major repair involving removing and installing a new engine block, pistons, cylinders, and related components.

Electrical System,service Brakes →1 issue
Your brake warning light has been coming on and off since November, and your vehicle has been leaking brake fluid. Your sliding doors may not stay properly closed while driving, even though the auto-close mechanism appears to have shut them. The doors can suddenly pop open during driving, triggering a chime and potentially opening further if you don't immediately pull over and slam them shut. The door sensor doesn't warn you before the door opens—it only alerts you after the door has already started to open while driving. Fixing this likely involves repairing or replacing the sliding door latch mechanism and door sensor system.

Fuel System, Gasoline →1 issue
While driving at 45 mph, you noticed an unusual fuel smell coming from inside your vehicle. No warning lights appeared on your dashboard, and the vehicle hasn't been diagnosed yet. You suspect this might be related to a known Kia fuel system issue, though your specific vehicle wasn't confirmed. The problem occurred around 71,000 miles.
