BROUGHT MY JEEP TO AN AUTOMOTIVE SHOP TO HAVE CRANK CASE AND TRANSMISSION OIL CHANGED. THEY DISCOVERED THAT THE REAR DRIVE SHAFT WAS IN DIRE STRAIGHT. THERE ARE 16 BOLTS; 8 AT EACH END THAT KEEP THE DRIVE SHAFT IN PLACE. 1 WAS COMPLETELY MISSING, 12 WERE BROKEN (IN MULTIPLE PLACES ON MULTIPLE BOLTS) AND 3 BOLTS WERE ALL THAT WAS KEEPING THE DRIVE SHAFT IN PLACE AND THEY WERE ALL ATTACHED TO THE REAR OF THE SHAFT. THE SHOP INSISTED THAT I SEE IT FIRST HAND AND THAT THEY HAD NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE IT BEFORE. I WAS COMPLETELY HORRIFIED, THERE IS NO TELLING HOW LONG IT HAD BEEN THAT WAY. I AM NOT HARD ON MY VEHICLE, I DON'T HOT ROD, OFF ROAD OR GO MUDDING. THERE WERE NO INDICATIONS OF A PROBLEM AND THE JEEP SERVICE DEPARTMENT DIDN'T DISCOVER ANYTHING DURING THEIR "UMPTEEN" VEHICLE POINT INSPECTION. THE ONLY THING I CAN FIGURE IS THAT THE FACTORY TORQUED THE BOLTS TOO HARD OR USED DEFECTIVE EQUIPMENT OR BOTH. THE COMPLACENCY IN QUALITY CONTROL IS DISTURBING; MY LIFE MATTERS AND THERE IS NO TELLING WHAT MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED IF THAT PART DECIDED TO LET GO. *TR

I TOOK IT TO A TRANSMISSION REPAIR SHOP AND THEY FOUND A SERVICE BULLETIN POSTED BY THE MANUFACTURE OF ESSENTIALLY A KNOWN ISSUE THAT OTHER PEOPLE WERE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM. THE JEEP HAS 28K MILES ON IT AND IS IN GREAT CONDITION OTHERWISE. APPARENTLY THIS IS A KNOWN DEFECT AND NOT CAUSES BY NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. THIS PROBLEM HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. THIS COMMON ISSUE WILL THEN BE ON THE HANDS OF THE OWNER. 2007-2010 JEEP JK WRANGLER (ALL MODELS) MANUAL 6 SPEED TRANSMISSION TRANSMISSION VIOLENTLY JUMPS OUT OF GEAR (JOG) IN FIRST AND SECOND GEAR WHEN STARTING FROM A STOP. THE ACTION IS QUICK, VIOLENT AND SOUNDS LIKE THE VEHICLE HIT A CURB OR ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE MOVEMENT OF THE SHIFT HANDLE IS VIOLENT ENOUGH TO CAUSE HAND INJURY INCLUDING BROKEN BONES. IN ADDITION, THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN AS THE VEHICLE CAN BECOME MOMENTARILY UNABLE TO ACCELERATE FROM A STOP OR SLOW SPEED (I.E. AVOIDING OTHER VEHICLES, OBJECTS ETC.). 1) DURING THE PERIOD OF PLACING THE MANUAL 6 SPEED INTO FIRST GEAR, THE GEAR WILL SPORADICALLY POP OUT AND ABRUPTLY BACK INTO NEUTRAL. IT DOES NOT SEEM TO MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE AS TO THE TEMPERATURES NOR CONDITIONS OUTSIDE. IT OCCURS UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. (STATE/CITY ROAD 2WD) 2) THE FAILURE IS THAT WITHOUT WARNING IN A SPORADIC STATE, 1ST GEAR WHILE ENGAGED AND MOVING AT EITHER 1 - 10 MPH WILL ABRUPTLY POP OUT OF FIRST AND LAND IN NEUTRAL WITH A LOUD THUD WHEN OCCURRING. THIS IS A DANGEROUS ISSUE IN THAT IF ONE IS PULLING ONTO A ROAD TO GO WITH OR AGAINST TRAFFIC AND THIS OCCURS, THE END RESULT COULD BE LIFE THREATENING. IF ONE PULLS ONTO A ROAD AND A CAR IS MOVING AT 40 MPH AND IS UNABLE STOP, A HIGH PROBABILITY EXISTS WHEREAS A T-BONE ACCIDENT COULD OCCUR THUS CAUSING DEATH. WITHIN 2500 MILES, THIS INCIDENT HAS OCCURRED 10+ TIMES. 3) A SERVICE VISIT IS CURRENTLY SCHEDULED, ALTHOUGH IF IT IS A COLLAR OR SYNCHRONIZING ISSUE, IT WILL AS LIKELY AS NOT BE REPAIRED. THE INCIDENT DOES NOT DUPLICATE TIME AFTER TIME. AS I MENTIONED, IT HAS OCCURRED IT 10+ TIMES WITHIN 2500 MILES. ROUGHLY 2.5% OF THE TIME WITHIN THE 0 MILES TO 2500 MILES THIS ISSUE HAS OCCURRED. HOWEVER, THIS IS NOT THE MOST ACCURATE RESULT DUE TO 1ST GEAR ONLY BEING UTILIZED WHEN PULLING OUT FROM A STAND STILL. THE DEALER ALSO STATED THAT IT APPEARED THAT THE FLUID WAS BURPING OUT OF THE HEAT VENT FROM THE TRANSMISSION BUT NOT FROM ANY OTHER SEAL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 400 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 12,000.
