Any time you fuel this vehicle the fuel gushes out of the filler neck. We have tried several different fueling stations . Different times of the day and night. Nothing changes , the fuel still blows out. Sometimes even if you pump slow it will still spew back out. Not every station has the rubber splash guards on their nozzles. The reason this is a danger is very obvious. Gasoline has a low flash point , not to mention the health risk of the vapors. One freak spark unrelated to me fueling could have deadly consequences. I spoke to jeep headquarters about this issue. They refused to give me the lot number for the faulty fuel tanks. The fuel tanks that had issues was on 2008 and earlier jeep Wranglers. Our jeep was manufactured in 2/2009 and from what I have gathered uses the exact same tank as the 2008 and earlier tanks back to a certain year. Is it to far fetched to believe that the tank installed could be faulty , just like the earlier ones. Just so we are clear this has been occuring since we purchased the jeep and continues to. I would like jeep to replace the tank or the valve in the tank. They could install the retro fit repair . I don't feel as an owner we should have the Burden of replacing the tank.

CRACKED FUEL TANK, FOUND THROUGH A SMOKE TEST
FIRST TIME FILLING THE TANK UP, AND OUT OF NO WHERE GAS EJECTED OUT ON TO ME AND WOULD NOT STOP. I HAD TO GRAB THE GAS NOZZLE OUT TO GET IT TO STOP. I WAS COVERED IN FLAMMABLE GAS, SMALL PUDDLES ON THE GROUND AND THE GAS THAT I COULDNT GET OFF THE PLASTIC BUMPER AND FENDER, RUINED THEM. NOT TO MENTION WAISTED $5 IN GAS AND EMBARRASSED WHEN I HAD TO TELL THE MANAGER OF THE SPILLED GAS.
WHEN GASSING UP AND THE TANK IS FULL, FUEL FREQUENTLY SQUIRTS OUT AND RUNS DOWN THE SIDE OF MY VEHICLE ONTO THE GROUND. SEVERAL TIMES IT HAS SPLASHED ON MY CLOTHES, SHOES, AND SKIN. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD. THIS STARTED IN ABOUT 2011 AND HAS CONTINUED OFF AND ON SINCE. IT IS MORE PREVALENT IN COLD WEATHER.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO WALKER CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP AND RAM (5757 COLISEUM BOULEVARD, ALEXANDRIA, LA 71301, (318) 618-0103) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL FILLER NECK AND FUEL TANK NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT THE 2007 AND 2008 JEEP WRANGLERS RECEIVED THE MANUFACTURER WARRANTED REPLACEMENT FOR THE FUEL NECK AND THE FUEL TANK; HOWEVER, THE 2009 WRANGLER WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.

WHEN REFUELING THE PUMP ALWAYS STOPS EVEN IF EMPTY, THIS MAKES IT VERY HARD TO KNOW IF IT'S ALREADY FULL OR IF IT'S JUST ACTING UP. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR A COUPLE YEARS NOW, AND IT HAPPENS 100% OF THE TIMES I REFUEL. I HAVE READ IN FORUMS THIS IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE AND SOME YEARS HAVE BEEN FIXED. THIS IS A POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD SINCE FUEL SPILLS ARE VERY COMMON WITH THIS PROBLEM.
FUEL SPITS BACK DURING REFUELING CAUSE: VALVE INTEGRATED IN FUEL TANK IS DEFECTIVE, TANK REQUIRES REPLACEMENT. PREVIOUS MODEL YEAR HAD THE SAME ISSUE AND A SERVICE-BULLETIN WAS ISSUED (14-001-11) WITH UNLIMITED TIME AND MILEAGE EXPIRATION. IT APPEARS TO ME THAT THE GAS TANK HAS A DESIGN FLAW AND SOMEHOW A DEFECTIVE TANK WAS PLACED IN MY VEHICLE, I BELIEVE MY VEHICLE SHOULD APPLY TO THE SERVICE BULLETIN THE SYMPTOMS AND CORRECTIVE ACTION ARE THE SAME
WHEN USING A GAS PUMP TO AUTO-FILL THE TANK, THE PUMP SHUTS OFF AND THE TANK OVERFLOWS SOME OF THE FUEL ONTO THE PAINT ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE 2009 JEEP WRANGLER. DOESN'T MATTER WHAT GAS STATION I GO TO, THE STYLE OF NOZZLE, OR THE ANGLE THE NOZZLE IS USED AT. IT OVER FILLS EVERY TIME. THIS JEEP WRANGLER X WAS RECENTLY PURCHASED IN NOVEMBER 2017 WITH 90, 961 MILES. STARTED EARLY NOVEMBER. I RECENTLY SOLD MY 1997 JEEP WRANGLER WHICH I HAD DRIVEN OVER 178,523 MILES IN THE 18 YEARS OF OWNERSHIP NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM NOT EVEN ONCE. INITIALLY I THOUGHT IT WAS OPERATOR ERROR UNTIL I READ THE COMPLIANTS ON THE INTERNET FROM OTHER JEEP OWNERS AND THE NHTSA WEBSITE.
MY JEEP HAS BEEN HAVING AN ONGOING ISSUE WHILE FUELING. AFTER THE FUEL FILLING NOZZLE AUTOMATICALLY SHUTS OFF IT WILL SPIT OUT FUEL ALL OVER ME AND MY VEHICLE. I UNDERSTAND THAT THE WARRANTY ON 2007-2008 JEEP WRANGLER JKS HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO BE A LIFETIME WARRANTY AND MINE DOES NOT FALL UNDER THE WARRANTY, EVEN THOUGH IT IS THE SAME ISSUE. THIS IS NOT JUST AN INCONVENIENCE. GASOLINE CAN CONTAIN HYDROCARBONS, PARAFINS, OLEFINS, CYCLOALKANES, OXYGENATORS, AND AROMATICS INCLUDING BENZENE WHICH IS A KNOWN HUMAN CARCINOGEN. THIS FUELING ISSUE IS NOT ONLY A SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN BUT IT IS ALSO A HEALTH CONCERN FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS.
CONSTANT OVERFLOW WHILE FUELING (~80% OF TIME). I DO NOT USE ANYTHING BUT REG GRADE FUEL. I DO NOT HOLD THE FUELING HOSE. IT DOES NOT MATTER IF I PUT THE HOSE IN ALL THE WAY OR SLIGHTLY OUT. IT TYPICALLY OVERFLOWS ABOUT 1/2 TO 1 PINT CREATING A FIRE HAZARD AND AN ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE

WHEN FILLING UP MY 2 DOOR JEEP WRANGLER IT NEVER FAILS TO OVERFLOW, IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT PUMP I USE OR HOW FAST OR SLOW I FILL UP. EACH TIME I FILL MY JEEP WITH GAS THERE IS A GUSHING OF GAS AT THE END OF FILL UP. EACH TIME I FILL IT UP THE JEEP DOESNT WANT TO TAKE THE GAS EITHER. IT WAS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY AT A GAS STATION.

THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 128,000.

PURCHASED VEHICLE LAST YEAR, SUDDENLY WHEN FILLING THE FUEL, AT THE POINT THE PUMP AUTOMATICALLY SHUTS OFF THE GAS BACK BLOWS DUMPING A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF FUEL ON YOU AND THE GROUND. THIS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE JANUARY OF THIS YEAR AND HAS HAPPENED THE LAST THREE TIMES I HAVE FUELED MY VEHICLE AT DIFFERENT PUMPS.

FUEL SPITS BACK WHEN FUELING. THIS HAPPENS EVERYTHING WE FUEL UP AND IS CREATING A DANGEROUS SITUATION. THE LOCAL JEEP DEALER TELLS ME THERE WAS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY OFFERED FOR 2007 AND 2008 JEEP WRANGLERS BUT MY 2009 WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE EXTENDED WARRANTY.

I'M SURE YOU'RE AWARE THAT THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH JEEP WRANGLER YEARS 2007, 08 AND 09 WHERE UPON FILLING UP THE TANK AND ONCE IT REACHES THE TOP, INSTEAD OF THE PUMP CLICKING OFF, FUEL (A LOT OF IT) SPITS OUT OF THE TANK AND ALL OVER THE BUMPER AND THE GROUND. TO CHRYSLER'S CREDIT, IF YOU COMPLAIN, THEY WILL REIMBURSE YOU FOR THE REPAIRS BUT IT IS TEDIOUS AND OFTEN TIMES, PEOPLE CAN'T AFFORD THE MONEY UP FRONT SO CHRYSLER WINS BY ATTRITION ESPECIALLY SINCE THEY WEREN'T FORCED TO HAVE A RECALL. I UNDERSTAND THAT NHTSA HAS CLOSED THIS ISSUE BUT IT IS BAD. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE FUEL POURING OUT OF YOUR VEHICLE AND ONTO YOUR SHOES, CAR AND THE GROUND, EVERY TIME YOU FILLED UP? MY NEXT STEP IS TO REPORT IT TO THE EPA FOR CERTAINLY, FUEL SPILLS OF THIS MAGNITUDE CANNOT BE LEGAL. IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, CAN YOU RE-ADDRESS THIS FOR THE INEVITABILITY IS THAT A 'PERFECT STORM' SCENARIO WILL OCCUR AND WHILE FUEL SPEWING PROBLEM IS HAPPENING, STATIC ELECTRICITY FROM THE CONSUMER COULD IGNITE IT OR EVEN SOME CARELESS AND UNSAFE SMOKER IS TOO CLOSE. I HAVE NOT PAID TO FIX IT AND IT CONTINUES TO HAPPEN TO THIS DAY. THIS IS CLEARLY A DESIGN FLAW AND THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THAT, BUT STILL HAVE NOT ISSUED A SERVICE BULLETIN TO CORRECT IT. THE DANGERS OF FUEL SPILT DOWN THE SIDE OF MY CAR AND ONTO THE GROUND SHOULD BE OBVIOUS.
VEHICLE WILL SPIT BACK FUEL WHEN PERFORMING A FILL UP (AT TIME OF FILLING.). THE FUEL FORCEFULLY SHOOTS OUT OF THE REFUILING ACCESS POINT. AMOUNT OF FUEL THAT SPITS BACK IS CONDIDERABLE (THE BETTER OF A PINT;) ENOUGH TO COVER THE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE, THE REAR BUMPER (AS WELL AS ON MYSELF) AND WILL LEAVE A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF FUEL ON THE PAVEMENT AT THE GAS STATION. I WILL POINT OUT THAT I NEVER TOP OFF THE TANK. I SIMPLY FILL UNTIL THE FUEL NOZZLE STOPS - A NORMAL WAY OF FUELING. THE "SPIT BACK" OCCURS WITHIN 1-2 SECONDS AFTER FUEILING IS COMPLETED. I HAVE CHECKED WITH CHRYSLER, AND THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE. IN FACT, A TSB (14-001-11) AS WELL AS A WARRANTY EXTENSION WAS ISSUED FOR THIS PROBLEM, BUT THE THE EXTENSION WAS ONLY ISSUED FOR 2007 AND 2008 MODELS. WHEN PUTTING GAS IN THE TANK, GASOLINE SPRAYS OUT OF THE FILLER TUBE AND SPLASHES GAS ON ME, THE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND ONTO THE GROUND. THIS OCCURS EVERYTIME I FILL THE TANK. I HAVE TRIED DIFFERENT GAS STATIONS AND THE PROBLEM STILL OCCURS. THE FIRST COUPLE OF TIMES THIS HAPPENED, GASOLINE HAD SPRAYED OUT OF THE FILLER TUBE AND ONTO ME AND MY CLOTHES. NOW WHEN I FILL THE TANK, I MUST STAND UPWIND AND AWAY FROM THE FILLER TUBE TO AVOID GETTING SPRAYED WITH GAS. THIS PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED! THE SAME DEFECT WAS REPORTED IN THE 2007 & 2008 JEEPS. IT WOULD APPEAR THAT THE SAME DEFECT IS NOW BEING REPORTED MULTIPLE TIMES FOR THE 2009 MODEL. GASOLINE THAT IS SPRAYED ONTO PEOPLE AND THE GROUND IS A FIRE HAZARD! I REFUSE TO LET MY WIFE AND KIDS PUT GAS IN THE JEEP, IN FEAR THAT THEY WILL BE SOAKED IN GASOLINE. I JUST PURCHASED MY 4 DOOR, 09 WRANGLER ON THURSDAY MARCH 13. I FIRST HAD TO FILL IT UP THAT SATURDAY THE 15ND. WHEN I DID, THE GAS TANK CLICKED OFF BUT GAS STILL CAME POURING OUT OF THE TANK (NOT THE NOZZLE). I WAS INCREDIBLY IRRITATED I JUST BOUGHT THIS JEEP AND NOW THERE WAS GAS POURING DOWN THE SIDE AND FENDERS. AFTER CLEANING IT UP I CHAULKED IT UP AS FAULTY EQUIPMENT AT THE GAS STATION . HOWEVER, THE NEXT 2 TIMES I FILLED UP, THE SAME THING HAPPENED. THIS IS INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING. NOT ONLY IS IT DANGEROUS BUT ITS DISGUSTING. NOT TO MENTION THESE VEHICLES AREN'T CHEAP, WE DON'T NEED TO BE WORRIED ABOUT GAS EATING AWAY AT THE VEHICLE AS ANOTHER EXPENSIVE. MY WIFE TOOK MY WRANGLER TO GET GAS AND WHEN THE GUY PULLED OUT THE NOZZLE GAS SPRAYED OUT AND SOME GOT ON HIM AND MY JEEP THIS IS ACTUALLY THE SECOND TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED THE FIRST TIME WAS 2/20/14 SAME GAS STATION DIFFERENT GUY. *TR

IN FEB 2011. I STARTED GETTING FUEL SPITTING BACK WHEN FILLING MY JEEP. TRIED 5 DIFFERENT GAS STATIONS OVER THE COURSE OF A MONTH. ALL WITH THE SAME RESULTS. TOOK IT INTO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP. THEY AGREED THAT IT WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM AND MADE REPAIRS UNDER THE 3/3600 WARRANTY. NOW THE SAME PROBLEM IS HAPPENING AGAIN. DEALERSHIP IS GOING TO TAKE A LOOK AT IT LATER THIS WEEK. DURING REFUELING FOR THE LAST SEVERAL MONTHS WE HAVE EXPERIENCE FUEL SPIT BACK. THIS HAS RESULTED IN FUEL SPILLING ON PERSON DOING THE REFUELING, FUEL ON VEHICLE AND GROUND, ENOUGH WERE THE ATTENDANT MUST CLEAN UP EXCESS FUEL ON THE GROUND. APPROXIMATE 1-CUP OF GAS SPLASHED OUT AT EACH OCCURRENCE. I DROVE HOME AND WASHED THE SPLASH AREA WITH SOAP AND WATER. END *TR

HAD NO CHANGE OF CLOTHES AND NOTHING TO WIPE GAS OFF THE PAINT, TIRES, AND PLASTIC FENDER. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS! EVERY FILL UP RESULTS IN GAS SPEWING OUT ONTO THE JEEP AND GROUND AND IF MY WIFE, KIDS, OR ME ISN'T PAYING ATTENTION THEN WE ARE WEARING THE GAS AS WELL. THANK GOD NO OPEN FLAME OR KABOOM. I HAVE CONTACTED JEEP AND TWO DEALERSHIPS BOTH ACKNOWLEDGING THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND RECALLED THE 2007 AND 2008 WRANGLERS FOR THIS BUT 2009 HAS NOT BEEN ADDED TO THE RECALL. ABOUT 2-4 CUPS OF GAS WILL COME OUT OF THE FILLER NECK, DRIPPING DOWN THE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND ONTO THE GROUND. SOME OF THIS MODELS FROM PREVIOUS YEARS HAD A RECALL OR SAFETY UPDATE THAT REPLACE PART OF THE FUEL FILLER TUBE TO INCLUDE A CHECK VALVE. I HAVE TALKED WITH OTHER JEEP OWNERS WITH THE SAME MODEL YEAR THAT ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE AND HAVE READ ABOUT OTHERS HAVING THIS ISSUE AS WELL. I CONTACTED CHRYSLER TO INQUIRE ABOUT GETTING THE FIX FOR THE EARLIER MODELS APPLIED TO MY VEHICLE AND WAS TOLD THAT DUE TO THE AGE AND MILEAGE, CERTAIN THINGS ARE EXPECTED TO NEED REPLACEMENT AND AS A VEHICLE OWNER, I NEED TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT. I UNDERSTAND THAT, BUT WHEN THE REPLACEMENT PART THAT IS NEEDED IS CONTROLLED BY CHRYSLER AND NOT AVAILABLE FOR SALE TO PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS, THIS BECOMES ANOTHER ISSUE. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO FIND A DEALER THAT WOULD SELL ME THE RECALL REPLACEMENT PART. *TR

REGARDLESS OF WHICH FUEL STATION I USE, THE PUMP DOES NOT SHUT OFF AUTOMATICALLY CAUSING FUEL TO SPILL OUT OF THE VEHICLE ONTO THE GROUND. IN RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM IT APPEARS IT MAY BE BASED ON A FAULTY MANUFACTURER PART (FUEL TANK). IF THIS OCCURS ON OTHER JEEPS, THE FUEL SPILLED AT THESE GAS STATIONS CREATE POTENTIAL TPH CONTAMINATION ON THE PROPERTY. I AM CONCERNED WITH THE ROLE I PLAY ON A POTENTIAL BENZENE PLUME IN GROUNDWATER DUE FROM SPILLS AT GAS STATIONS AS WELL AS THE DAMAGE I AM DOING TO THE EXTERIOR OF MY VEHICLE FROM FUEL SPILLING OVER THE SIDE CAUSING ACCELERATED CORROSION ON THE BODY OF THE VEHICLE. *TR
MY 2009 WRANGLER HAS AN OVERFILLING PROBLEM EVERY SINGLE TIME I FILL UP AT THE GAS STATION. MY MECHANIC HAS BEEN IN TOUCH WITH JEEP WHO CLAIMS THEY HAVEN'T HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM, AND HE HAS ALSO CONTACTED CHRYSLER CORPORATION WHO HAS NOT RETURNED HIS PHONE CALLS. AT THIS POINT I JUST WANT THE PROBLEM FIXED BECAUSE THIS IS A HAZARDOUS MATERIAL THAT IS POURING OUT ONTO MY CAR, MY BODY, MY CLOTHES, AND THE GROUND. I LOOKED ON LINE AND FOUND OUT THAT THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM AND RECALLED ON THE 07 AND 08 YEAR GROUPS, BUT NOT RECALLED ON THE 09 YEAR. THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT CHRYSLER SHOULD FIX IMMEDIATELY. *TR

THE AMOUNT OF GAS IS ENOUGH THAT I NEED TO CLEAN IT UP AT THE STATION OFF THE GROUND AND AROUND WHERE THE PUMP CONNECTS TO THE JEEP. *TR

WHEN FILLING MY 2009 JEEP WRANGLER WITH GAS, THE FUEL OVERFLOWS - OFTEN SO MUCH THAT IT SPILLS ONTO THE GROUND. NO MATTER HOW SLOWLY OR CAUTIOUSLY I PUMP THE FUEL, IT STILL OVERFLOWS! THIS HAS HAPPENED ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS! I HAVE HAD OTHER PEOPLE FUEL MY VEHICLE TO MAKE CERTAIN IT WAS NOT PERSONAL ERROR - AND IT STILL OVERFLOWS. IT IS MY OPINION THAT THERE IS A MALFUNCTION IN THE VEHICLE. I HAVE RESEARCHED THE MATTER AND FOUND THAT APPARENTLY I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE HAVING THIS ISSUE. I OWN A 2009 JEEP WRANGLER 2 DOOR MODEL THAT HAS BEEN HAVING ISSUES WHEN I FILL UP MY GAS TANK. I HAVE SEEN ON NUMEROUS ONLINE FORUMS THAT I AM NOT ALONE IN THIS MATTER. WHEN I USE THE PUMP TO FILL MY TANK IT WILL AUTO SHUT OFF THE PUMP THEN SPEW AT LEAST 2-3 CUPS OF GASOLINE OUT OF THE GAS INTAKE ONTO THE SIDE OF MY VEHICLE, GROUND AND ON OCCASION MYSELF. 2009 JEEP WRANGLER 2 DOOR RUBICON W/ 6 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION. DECELERATION PROBLEM. VEHICLE WILL ACCELERATE SPORADICALLY WHEN DESCENDING LONG STEEP GRADES FORCING DRIVER TO RIDE BRAKES TO KEEP UNDER CONTROL. THIS OCCURS WHEN VEHICLE APPROACHES APPROXIMATELY 2000 RPM. IT FEELS LIKE JUST A SLIGHT ACCELERATION, HOWEVER, IT'S ENOUGH TO PUT THE VEHICLE INTO A COASTING SITUATION WITH NO ENGINE BRAKING WHATSOEVER. THIS ALSO OCCURS WHEN SLOWING FOR A STOP SIGN. ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS COMPLETELY RELEASED AND THE VEHICLE JUST GOES INTO A COAST. THIS SITUATION COULD LEAD TO BRAKE FADE ON A LONG STEEP GRADE AND ACCELERATED BRAKE WEAR.
