2018 Jeep Compass Transmission Problems

Description of Problem: Since purchase, this vehicle has exhibited severe safety defects, including sudden and repeated engine shutdowns at highway speeds, loss of power while driving, dashboard malfunctions, steering lockups, service ESC, dynamic steering torque service required, service hill holder, false fuel gauge readings, service airbag reading, transmission warming sign, and emergency brake engagement without command.

Transmission hard shift especially when cold. Makes grinding noise when shifting into 3rd. We have not taken it to a dealer cause we bought it used and it’s 62 thousand miles on the car and 60 thousand is supposedly the limit for the warranty.

On 2 separate occasions, my Jeep Compass has stalled completely shutting off, emergency brake engages on it's own and the steering wheel locks and the vehicle will not restart immediately. At the end of february 2020 my 2018 jeep compass engine would seize, while I was driving. It would shut off, and automatically put on the parking brake. I would no longer be able to accelerate, I'd lose power steering, and then it would struggle to restart.

I've been getting this car serviced every 2-3 months for the same issue since I first leased it in july 2018. I've been saying it's a transmission issue, I get ignored. My car has stopped working in the middle of the road and highways for the entirety of my lease, it happened again on 3/1/2020 and the service department finally took it in.

Latest incident (7/21/23) resulted in check engine light code: P1DD2 - “Torque Request Signal from TCM denied”. Check engine light came on - Jeep felt like it was going to stall. For several months now, I’ve had intermittent issues with the Jeep “shifting” on its own while driving without me touching the shifter.

After being serviced by my vehicle’s dealership only a month earlier (and still well within the powertrain warranty), my vehicle suddenly stalled and shut off in the middle of the freeway during peak morning traffic. I narrowly escaped being hit by a semi-truck from behind and had to quickly pull over to the side of the freeway as safely as I could.

All lights randomly flashed on dash then the vehicle stalled in the middle of traffic. This is the third time it has happened, and the dealership had claimed to have fixed it. Just had brand new batteries installed to ensure sufficient voltage, and it still happened.

I was driving my 2018 Jeep Compass in February 2022 and had received no warning of critically low oil pressure, then my car shut itself off in an intersection and the parking brake automatically engaged, then the critically low oil warning came on. I got an oil change and they said it wasn't leaking oil.

The automatic start stop function constantly goes out, TCM unable to send signal to transmission to shift. Caused the car to stall in an intersection and self applied the emergency brake at around 5mph causing the vehicle to jerk to a halt. Car inexplicably throws service engine code and then transmission downshifts to 30mph from higher speeds nearly causing wreck.

1) 10/29/2020 I was driving on the highway with the cruse control on when the car made a loud thump, jumped out cruse control, shut off, check engine light came on. On 12/12/2019 at approximately 8:30pm I was driving eastbound I-80 in utah traveling about 65mph. At mile marker 130 at the entrance to parleys canyon as I tried to accelerate my vehicle stalled, loosing power. I was able to move to the shoulder of the road but nearly rearended and several semi's needed to do quick manuevers to avoid colliding with me.

I was driving and my car just stalled and I could not get it to start again. I have had this happen to me over 4 times. My car is currently at the Jeep Dealer and they charged me over $700 telling me it was wiring. It happened again on 11/24/2025 and they have had my car since then and they keep telling me they cannot figure out what was wrong with it. Today they called me and said it was a circuit thing. There was a recall for exactly what was happening to my car. NHTSA Recall 18v-524 just that my car was not recalled. I am now going 2 weeks without a car and it clearly is experiencing EXACTLY what the recall says. over 3 times I was on the highway when the car stalled while I was driving. It just stopped in the middle of the highway the car behind me had to stop short. I had a bad panic attack. Why are they not doing the right thing and fixing what they know they have to fix. 3 years ago the first problem started. If my car was idle for more than 15 minutes the SERVICE TRANSMISSION & CHECK ENGINE lights would turn on. I made an appointment at Jeep but could not be helped because the light turned off the next day.

My car has 58,000 miles on it, I purchased it with 20,000 certified pre owned. I have noticed engine noises since around 40,000 miles. I was driving down the road a week ago and the Jeep Compass sport 2018 had shut completely off on me while driving and I never had any warning light.

Hand brake, part # 6mf41lxh-aa, switch br 08058060, due to vehicle design and being acceptable to underneath rain water, puddles, slusshes, but no high waters or floods, when engaged in park will not disengage,and not movable, and must be transported to be factory or dealer repaired/ replaceed at a high owner expense plus the inconvience of not having use of the jeep.

During acceleration and deceleration (mostly on inclines or highway travel), the shifting of the engine/transmission seems to "slam" into different gears. I was told by the dealership they cannot check for issues with the drivetrain if there are no check engine lights on the instrument panel. This happens randomly but is increasing in frequency.

Auxiliary battery in this causing major other issues within the car. Causing power to transmission to be delay and resulting in both your check engine and check transmission lights to be activated.

'18 jeep compass- in repair shop 19 times for 55 individual repairs (several reoccurring) with only 14 completed repairs.

Initially service transmission message, appears on the car when it was turn without moving for more than 10 minutes, after that if there was an intention of changing the gear of the car (drive or reverse) the complete cars move like a mayor part was broken. After turning on the car and turning off the car 2 times the message disappear and the car can start moving freely.

The fuel hand is inaccurate I had a half a tank of gas started it and it randomly said I had 423 miles to e which it has never said not even with a full tank of gas ever since then it's like it drinks the gas it's supposed to be getting more than 120 miles a tank a gas every two days I have to put gas in it or the gas hand is lying.

While driving the tachometer and the digital and analog speedometers went to zero. And the d for drive was flashing in the dash as well as at the shifter along with the parking brake light flashing also.when I pulled over and put it in park it shut itself off and would not immediately restart. This is a few months after taking to the dealer for the transmission not shifting and codes flashing.

When my vehicle hits 47 MPH it starts making a very loud humming noise coming from the engine area. The noise continues to be persistent until I slow down to less than 30 MPH. I have taken it to dealership but jeep doesn't know how to fix it.

The jeep has an issue....when I back into my drive way in reverse the car will sometimes roll forward....really unsure what this is about but believe it should be checked out. Radio will randomly turn on while the car is off and I am outside of it (doors locked) car will struggle to go into gear sometimes, strong jerk once it goes into gear. Windshield whippers will turn on on their own (sunny day) and will not turn off.

Second time this issue has been a problem. First time electrical issues prevented car from shifting out of gear and car will not shut off, I had to pull fuses to get car to shut down. Emergency parking brake would not even engage.

Automatic transmission, at times, makes a clunking noise shifting from 4th to 5th gear. Noted times are when cresting a hill (stays in 4th gear at higher RPM's until car levels out over the hill) and also when cruising at low speed (30-35mph) when RPM's are low. All other gear shifts are smooth.

After stopping at intersections, accelerated to 30-35 MPH, then as car starts to shift at higher speed, a clunk and hesitation is heard after auto shifting .

Upon starting vehicle and shifting into drive, vehicle has started rolling in reverse on the incline eventhough the transmission is in drive. Upon inspection of the shift indicator, the "d" drive position indicator has been flashing and transmission is not engaged, and the vehicle is freewheeling . Per dealer, computer shows no indication of the problem or code information about it.

Radio (display) keeps shutting off and takes minutes to reconnect, brought into dealership say they cant find anything wrong with it it. Has done it 2 more times since then. Here a loud noise when running between 35pmh-45mph, brought into dealership and they said noise is coming from drivetrain, found starcase for exact conditions and engineering is working on a soultion, no dtc's.

I was driving on a county road and the message "service hill assist" came on the screen. I kept driving and the messages "service esc" and "service engine soon" came on the screen. The power steering went out, the screen for the radio kept flashing on and off, and I could not turn the engine off with the push button ignition.

While driving between 30-50mph in inclement weather the 4 wheel drive system attempts to engage the rear axle for additional traction. When this occurs there is a intermittent banging noise that emits from the bottom of the vehicle and a bad vibration throughout the vehicle. The dealer diagnosed this as a "over modulation" of the rear axle which causes a binding of the driveshaft.

It makes a humming noise and it sounds like when you are slowing down it's almost like it's shifting down. Been doing since I picked it up from the dealer on 01/19/2018. I have had it at the dealership they say the noise is normal .

Shifting assembly failed. When the service center went to order it, it was heavily backordered (meaning many people with this Make / Model experiencing the same failure at the same time). Service center showed me that a thin rubber gasket is all that failed … it is no more substantial than a rubber washer you put in a water hose).

While at a stop light, my vehicle moved into "stop" mode and as the light turned green and I attempted to resume driving the vehicle attempted to go back into "start" mode and shut down completely. I could not press down fully on the break nor turn on my hazards. THe dashboard flickered, but never shut off.

The torque converter is bad and when driving on the highway it stopped my car and caused it to stop luckily I was able to get off the freeway before wreck could happen

When driving down the road if I make a complete stop the autostp engages will not disengage until jeep is in park and turned off and on. The emergency brake will also randomly engage. Cause me not to be able to move.

Battery died and requires jump starting every time I turn the vehicle off. It took an hour to start my vehicle today. It is believed to be a voltage regulator issue just like other models of this vehicle but my VIN says it isn't eligible for the recall.

Will not start when pressing the "start engine" button it was stationary. It also completely stops and locks into place then goes automatically into emergency brake when turning or coming to a stop.

The car transmission indicator is coming on. Having a slow time to accelerate and drive

The car stopped in the middle of freeway, I was lucky no one was behind me, so far three times it happened. Every time when it happened I was driving the car. The way it happens first my speed will reduced even though I was pushing the gas, and suddenly stops.

On november 14, 2019, my wife drove our 2018 jeep compass on a local street, within minutes, the car began slowing down in the middle of the road, came to a complete stop, and then shut off. Before the car shut off, the emergency brake light came on. On the first attempt, the car did not turn back on.

While driving this vehicle on the freeway the "service shifter" message came up on dash. All lights on the shifter came red. Car has only 15,199 miles on it.

Engine eats oil way to much around 709 miles it will start to roughly idle and when checking the oil levels it's 2 quarts low. I can also be driving and the vehicle will jerk when trying to get up to speed thrusting me forward like it's having trouble.

My brake engaged yesterday while traveling on a city street. I was stopped at a light. I pushed the gas to make my vehicle accelerate when the light turned green.

Computer message in the car information screen stated shifter service as I was turning on the car. Currently there hasn't been a recall on this item but according to the research there needs to be on set up. Everytime I attempt to accelerate there is a delay also upon braking just a tip jerks the whole vehicle.

My 2018 jeep compass 4WD makes grumble/drone" sound at 30 MPH and above, sounds like it's from the transmission or differential.

This is the third car I own, my first two cars were honda and now I am currently driving a 2018 jeep compass. I have been driving this car since august, on 2/26/19 around 1:30pm I was driving for about 2 minutes when I stopped at a red light and my automatic stop/start turned my car off, I pressed the button and my car started again normally.

Enciendo el vehculo pero cuando me quedo dentro del mismo encendido y con aire acondicionado encendido por lo menos 20minutos se enciende luz del motor y transmisin indicando tiene que ser verificado, procedo apagar el vehculo por 2hrs y al encenderlo nuevamente ya no lo tiene pero aveces puede salir corriendo el vehculo y el cambio se queda en 3d nunca baja y no pasa de 40mph

After using the remote start and getting in the vehicle I was able to place the vehicle in drive without pressing on the brake or pressing the start/stop button to allow the wheel to move freely, in turn allowing the vehicle to roll forward on a hill without being fully turned on thus not allowing for the power steering to work and the steering wheel locked in position.

Vehicle transmission would jerk or bump hard enough for seat belt tension system to jerk you into the seat. Would mostly happen at a constant 30 MPH or lower such as a school zone. Although would also happen at higher speeds on acceleration such as on ramp or passing another vehicle.

When ever I am moving over 65mph in manual transmission, the vehicle automatically shifting gear from 9 th to 5th gear. Because of that the vehicle making fearful sound and sudden rise in engine RPM and making me uncomfortable driving on freeways, because of sudden downgrading gear from 9 to 5 that is kind of unexpected and uncontrollable.
