NHTSA Campaign: 20V191000

Component: BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2020 Jeep Gladiator and Jeep Cherokee, 2019-2020 Ram 1500 Pickup, Ram 2500 Pickup, Ram 3500 Pickup, Chrysler Pacifica, Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Wrangler, and Jeep Renegade and 2019 Dodge Challenger vehicles equipped with 8.4" or 12" radio displays. A software error can cause the rearview camera image to remain displayed after the vehicle has been shifted out of reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors."

Risk: The lingering rearview image can distract the driver, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Chrysler has notified owners, and dealers will update the radio display software, free of charge. Optionally, owners can choose to remotely update their software via an Over-The-Air (OTA) update available as of May 1, 2020. The recall began April 27, 2020. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is W30-W37.

Your vehicle lost power when you tried to accelerate while changing lanes, with a grinding noise coming from the front. When you shifted to park in a parking lot, the vehicle unexpectedly started moving in reverse. A "Service 4WD" warning light came on, and a mechanic diagnosed that your Power Transfer Unit (PTU) needs to be replaced. This problem happened twice, and you had to use the parking brake to keep the vehicle from rolling.

While driving on the highway at 70 mph, your powertrain suddenly failed and felt like the vehicle went into neutral, making it undriveable. A check engine light came on after the failure, and your dealership has confirmed the issue. The repair will likely involve diagnosing and replacing the faulty powertrain component.

Your vehicle suddenly lost all power and steering control while driving in a snowstorm after you activated Snow Mode. You had to pull off the highway during dangerous winter conditions, creating a serious risk of being hit by other traffic. The dealership diagnosed a failed rear differential and noted this is a known issue, but the replacement part has been on national backorder with no availability date, leaving your vehicle completely unable to drive.

Your car's Power Transfer Unit (PTU) — which transfers engine power to the wheels — completely failed while you were driving 70 mph on the highway. You lost all forward acceleration and couldn't move, even though the engine was revving high. A mechanic found that one of the internal gears inside the PTU had completely disintegrated with no warning signs beforehand. Replacing the PTU will require removing it from the vehicle and installing a new one, though these units are currently on extended back order.

Your transfer case may fail, causing your engine to race at high RPM while your wheels receive no power — similar to the transmission shifting into neutral. This problem may happen intermittently at first but eventually render your vehicle undrivable. Your dealer may need to order a replacement transfer case, which could take weeks due to parts availability constraints. Repair typically involves replacing the transfer case with a remanufactured unit from Mopar.

Your 4WD system stopped working while you were driving, and a flashing 4WD warning light appeared on your dashboard. When you took the vehicle to a mechanic, they confirmed the 4WD was inoperable. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the 4WD transfer case, actuator, or related electrical components to restore four-wheel drive functionality.

Your Jeep's Power Transfer Unit (PTU) has failed. This is a known issue affecting this model year, but your vehicle's production date falls just outside the current recall window, so you won't be covered under the factory recall. Repairing or replacing the PTU will likely involve removing and servicing or replacing the entire unit.

While driving your 2020 Jeep Cherokee, a "Service 4WD System" warning message appeared on your dashboard along with other warning lights. Your dealer couldn't find the cause, but an independent mechanic diagnosed a PTU (Power Transfer Unit) failure. The problem continued even after diagnosis, and you suspect this may be related to a known recall.

Your four-wheel drive system stopped working and a 'SVC FWD' warning light appeared on your dashboard, though you could still drive using front-wheel drive only. The dealership diagnosed the problem as a faulty power transfer unit (PTU) that needs to be replaced. After dropping the vehicle off for repair in September 2025, you haven't received an update from the dealer despite waiting over five months for the replacement part to arrive. The fix will involve replacing the failed power transfer unit.

Your 2020 Jeep Cherokee displayed a "Service 4WD System" warning light at 86,969 miles. The dealer diagnosed that your power transfer unit and transfer case control module both need replacement, with a total repair cost of $4,722.14. You've noted that older model years of this vehicle were recalled for the same issue, and you're concerned that the 2020 model year wasn't included in that recall despite appearing to have the same manufacturing defect. The repair will involve replacing both the power transfer unit and the transfer case control module in your vehicle's four-wheel drive system.

Your 2020 Jeep Cherokee's 4WD service light came on, indicating the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) was failing and blocking proper operation. The dealer replaced the PTU to restore power to your drive wheels. A complete failure could have left you without power while driving on a highway, creating a dangerous situation where you couldn't reach a safe location.

Your Power Transfer Unit (the component that controls four-wheel drive) isn't working, which means you've lost four-wheel drive capability — a serious safety concern in winter conditions. The repair is expensive and parts are heavily backordered. Although this was a known issue with recalls issued for 2018 and 2019 models, your 2020 hasn't been recalled yet. Fixing this will likely require replacing or rebuilding the Power Transfer Unit.

Your car's shifter is stuck in park and won't move, likely due to a faulty shifter sensor or assembly. You've also experienced engine shaking, inaccurate gas gauge readings, rough shifting between gears, and now the car won't start—with warning lights for 'service shifter' and 'brake sensor service' appearing on the dashboard. The problem may involve a transmission range sensor failure, faulty shifter module, or corroded wiring connections. Fixing this will likely require dealership diagnostics to identify which sensor or component has failed, followed by replacement of the faulty part.

Your airbags failed to deploy during a head-on collision, even though the front-end damage was severe enough to total the vehicle.
