TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. WHILE PULLING INTO THE DRIVEWAY, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO REVERSE. THE CONTACT EXITED THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT THE FRONT WHEELS WERE POINTING IN TWO DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TUBE THAT CONNECTED THE TIE ROD TO THE FRONT END BY THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE WHEELS WAS RUSTED AND FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 196,000. UPDATED 07/12/17*LJ *CN

WHEN DRIVING AT 45 TO 50 MPH THE FRONT END STARTS TO VIBRIATE AND STARTS TO SHAKE UNCONTROLLABLY,WHAT'S REALLY BAD IS THAT YOU DON'T KNOW WHEN IT WILL HAPPEN.I DROVE FROM SAVANNAH TO MICHIGAN AND BACK WITH NO PROBLEMS THAN WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT THAN IT HAPPENS ! IT SHAKES SO BAD YOU CAN'T DRIVE SO YOU HAVE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD AND STOP AND IT SEEMS TO GO AWAY BUT IT MAY RETURN AFTER ANOTHER ONE OR TWO THOUSAND MILES. I HAVE BROUGHT TO SHOPS AND HAVE REPLACED FRONT END PARTS,BRAKES,TIRES ETC. THEY CAN'T FIND THE PROBLEM.I HAVE READ THAT IT'S A DISIGN FLAW WITH THE COIL SPRINGS BEING IN A BAD POSITION. MY JEEP IS DOING SEVERAL THINGS THAT IS CAUSE FOR NOT DRIVING IT BECAUSE IT CAN CAUSE A ACCIDENT. IT DOES NOT ALWAYS JUST START. I HAVE TO MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL UP & DOWN ^ THEN IT WILL START GENERALLY. WHEN DRIVING THE JEEP WILL REV UP ALL OF A SUDDEN ESPECIALLY AT STOP SIGNS. IF I DIDN'T HAVE MY FOOT ON THE BRAKES I COULD HAVE CAUSED A ACCIDENT. ALSO I WOULD HAVE TO KEEP MY FOOT ON THE GAS OR IT WOULD DIE ON ME. THESE THINGS HAVE BEEN GOING ON FOR THE LAST 2-3 MONTHS.WHEN I PUT MY JEEP IN REVERSE OR IN DRIVE IT MAKES A MAJOR CLUNKING NOISE LIKE MY TRANSMISSION IS READY TO FALL OUT. I HAVE A 2001 JEEP CHEROKEE AND BEGAN TO NOTICE THE PROBLEM TOWARD THE END OF 2012 OR FIRST OF 2013. WHEN I WOULD REACH A SPEED OF AROUND 55 MPH, THE FRONT WHEELS/STEERING WHEEL WOULD BEGIN TO VIBRATE, SHAKE OR WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT. IT IS A VIOLENT VIBRATION THAT IS PRETTY SCARY AND FEELS LIKE YOU CANNOT CONTROL THE VEHICLE. IT SUBSIDES IF YOU IMMEDIATELY SLOW WAY DOWN. THE PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. IT NOW WOULD START AROUND 45 MILES AN HOUR OR SO, DEPENDING ON HOW SMOOTH OR BUMPY THE ROAD IS. THE BUMPIER, THE MORE EASILY IN BEGINS THE WOBBLE. WHEN I RECENTLY RESEARCHED IT ONLINE, IT IS CALLED THE "DEATH WOBBLE". I HAVE NEVER PUT IN "NON-CONFORMING" PARTS, NOR HAVE I USED MY VEHICLE OFF-ROAD OR ABUSED IT. I HAVE MAINTAINED MY VEHICLE AND IT HAS ABOUT 160,000 MILES ON IT. I HAD JUST TAKEN IT IN TO SEE IF THE SHAKING CAN BE REPAIRED, AND THE PERSON WORKING ON IT, REPLACED ALMOST EVERY PART ASSOCIATED WITH THE FRONT SUSPENSION ETC. IN WHAT HE THOUGHT HAD CORRECTED THE PROBLEM, IT HAS ONLY MODERATELY REDUCED THE SYMPTOMS. SO FAR, ABOUT $800.00 WORTH OF REPAIRS THAT HAVE NOT CORRECTED THE PROBLEM. I DON'T THINK I WANT ANY OF MY TAX DOLLARS TO BAIL OUT CHRYSLER CORPORATION IF THEY DO NOT FIX THE PROBLEM AT NO COST TO THE CONSUMER. I SAW THEIR FORCED "ACKNOWLEDGEMENT" OF THE PROBLEM AND I ALSO SAW THAT THEY WILL NOT PICK UP THE COST OF TRYING TO FIX THE DEFECT. THIS IS ANOTHER COMPLAINT FOR 'DEATH WOBBLE'. I HAVE HAD MY JEEP TAKEN IN SEVERAL TIMES AND HAVE HAD TO LIVE WITH IT BECAUSE MECHANICS DIDN'T BELIEVE ME OR JUST DIDN'T SOLVE MY PROBLEM. I SHOULD HAVE USED THE LA LEMON LAW STATUTES TO RETURN MY CAR BUT DIDN'T KNOW THAT BACK THEN. DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD 45-70 MPH AND EITHER HITTING A BUMP OR GOING AROUND 70 MPH YOUR WHOLE FRONT END WILL "SHIMMY/SHAKE/WOBBLE" MAKING IT FEEL LIKE A GIANT EARTHQUAKE. I HAVE TRIED TO FIND A CLASS ACTION SUIT AGAINST THIS AS I FIND SEVERAL WEBSITES/FORUMS/CUSTOMERS COMPLAINING ABOUT IT. RIGHT WHEN IT SHAKES YOU HAVE TO SLOW DOWN BELOW 40 MPH - SOMETIMES ON THE INTERSTATE AND HAVE HAD CLOSE CALLS FOR A COLLISION! IF YOU WANT JUST SEARCH FOR 'DEATH WOBBLE' AND YOU WILL SEE A WHOLE NEW WORLD. I DON'T KNOW WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF YOU DIDN'T SLOW DOWN AS YOUR IMMEDIATE RESPONSE IS TO HIT THE BRAKES. I WAS DRIVING IN A MALL PARKING LOT LOOKING FOR A PARKING SPACE. I WAS TURNING THE CORNER TO GO DOWN THE NEXT AISLE AND ALL OF A SUDDEN I HAD NO CONTROL OF THE JEEP. AS I TURNED TO THE LEFT TO CONTINUE LOOKING FOR A PARK, THE JEEP WAS SPEEDING OUT OF CONTROL AND I WAS SLAMMING ON THE BRAKE WITH BOTH FEET AND THE JEEP JUST KEPT ACCELERATING! I WAS UNABLE TO STEER AWAY FROM THE VEHICLES I WAS HEADING TOWARDS. AS I WAS HEADING TOWARDS THE FIRST VEHICLE THAT I HIT, I WAS TRYING TO STEER AWAY FROM IT AND THEN THE JEEP TURNED TO THE RIGHT AND KEPT ACCELERATING. I ENDED UP HITTING FOUR OTHER VEHICLES ( 5 VEHICLES TOTAL) AND FINALLY CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP AFTER HITTING THE LAST VEHICLE. THERE IS EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO MY JEEP AND TO THE OTHER VEHICLES INVOLVED. WE HAVE NOT HAD THE DAMAGE ACCESSED YET, SO WE DO NOT KNOW HOW MUCH THIS WILL COST TO FIX. I BELIEVE MY JEEP IS TOTALED. WE ARE THANKFUL NOBODY WAS INJURED AND THAT I AM OK, JUST SHAKEN UP A LITTLE.

EXPERIENCED ISSUES WITH STEERING ASSEMBLY CONSISTENT WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID 01V007000 (STEERING BOX RECALL FOR 2001 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE) AND NOTICED THE VEHICLE BECAME LESS RESPONSIVE TO STEERING INPUT AND RESULTED IN A NEAR ACCIDENT WHILE ENTERING A HIGHWAY ON-RAMP ON JUNE 26, 2006 (THE CAR WOULD NOT TURN WHEN THE WHEEL WAS TURNED). THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER SERVICE STATION AND THE DEALER RECOMMENDED STEERING BOX REPLACEMENT DUE TO NOTICEABLE GRINDING IN STEERING ASSEMBLY. JEEP CLAIMS THE REPAIR IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY OR THE RECALL. THE RECALL IS EFFECTIVE FOR VEHICLES BUILT BETWEEN THE DATES OF NOVEMBER 22 AND DECEMBER 5, 2000 ONLY, MY VEHICLE WAS BUILT ON DECEMBER 6, 2000. JEEP WAS UNABLE TO CONFIRM THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT MADE WITH DEFECTIVE PARTS. I AM REQUESTING NHTSA INVESTIGATE JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE VEHICLES MADE AFTER DECEMBER 5, 2000 FOR STEERING BOX FAILURE ISSUES, THE RECALL ISSUED IS NOT EXTENSIVE ENOUGH RESULTING IN POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUES. *JB

STEERING WHEEL STARTS SHAKING VIOLENTLY WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE RODE AT 50-60MPH. THIS HAPPENS AT RANDOM WITH NO WARNING, FORCING YOU TO PULL OFF THE ROAD TO AVOID LOSING CONTROL. HAVE TAKEN VEHICLE IN TO TRY AND DETERMINE THE PROBLEM AND THIS HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED. THIS IS STILL OCCURRING AND HAVE SEEN NUMEROUS REPORTS ON THE INTERNET ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. ALSO ONE STATE IS ATTEMPTING TO FILE A CLASS ACTION SUIT OVER THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE CONTACTED CHRYSLER AND THEY HAVE DOCUMENTED MY COMPLAINT ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. ALSO THEY SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRIC WINDOWS IN THESE VEHICLES, THE ROTOR FAILS AND THE WINDOW WILL CANNOT BE PUT UP OR IT WILL GO DOWN BY ITSELF. HAVE HAD 2 WINDOW ROTORS REPLACED WITHIN ONE WEEK.

THE CONSUMER HAD THE VEHICLE IN THE SHOP ALMOST 10 TIMES FOR REPAIRS. THE CONSUMER ARGUED THAT THE POWER STEERING WAS OUT OF ORDER AND SHE WAS UNABLE TO STEER THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE. THE VEHICLE HAD EXPERIENCED OTHER PROBLEMS SUCH AS THE DRIVE PINION, HEATING PADS, BRAKE ROTORS, CALIPERS, PADS, POWER STEERING PUMP, THE REAR SHOCK ABSORBERS AND REAR SWAY BAR LINKS. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THE PROBLEMS NO HELP WAS OFFERED. IT HAD APPEARED THAT THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL ISSUED FOR THE GRAND CHEROKEES BUILT ONLY FROM NOV 22- DEC 5 2000 FOR THE POWER STEERING AND THE CONSUMER MISSED IT BY A MONTH, BUT THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM AS THE RECALL THAT WAS ISSUED. THE CONSUMER WAS VERY DISSATISFIED WITH THE DEALERSHIP. *AK *CB THE VEHICLE ALSO EXPERIENCED THREE TIRE BLOWOUTS.
