Your engine shut off while you were driving at an undisclosed speed, but the vehicle restarted and ran normally afterward. An independent mechanic inspected the vehicle but couldn't reproduce the problem and didn't make repairs. This happened at around 174,000 miles.

AS WITH MANY OTHER JEEP OWNERS WITH THE 4.0 ENGINE (HUNDREDS THAT I HAVE SEEN) MY 2001 JEEP CHEROKEE'S CYLINDER HEAD CRACKED. MINE WAS AT 117K MILES, AND THE AVERAGE MILEAGE FOR FAILURE SEEMS TO BE 100K - 120K MILES. THIS IS A DEFINITE DESIGN FLAW. MY JEEP WAS WELL MAINTAINED AND SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD A CRACKED CYLINDER HEAD. I ASK NHTSA TO CONTACT CURRENT OWNERS OF JEEP 4.0 ENGINES TO REALLY SEE HOW OFTEN THIS FAULT OCCURS. CHRYSLER SEEMS TO TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS, WHICH IS WHY I AM ASKING THE NHTSA TO INVESTIGATE.

IN THE 2000 AND 2001 CHEROKEES WITH THE 4.0 ENGINE HEAD CASTING 0331 CHRYSLER KNEW ABOUT THE CYLINDER HEADS CRACKING. IN 2002 THEY CONTRACTED WITH TUPY MANUFACTURING IN BRAZIL TO REMAKE THE HEAD CASTING THAT RAN UNTIL THE 4.0 WAS STOPPED BEING USED BY THEM. MINE HAS SINCE CRACKED AND CHRYSLER SAYS THAT NO FACTORY RECALL WAS DONE AND SUCH I'M STUCK WITH A CRACKED HEAD THAT THEY KNEW WAS FAULTY.

I TOOK MY VEHICLE INTO LARSON JEEP DODGE IN PUYALLUP, WA TO HAVE TWO RECALLS PREFORMED. ONE OF THE OPEN RECALL CAMPAIGNS ARE RECALL F25. THIS RECALL INVOLVES REPLACING THE ELECTRIC COOLING FAN. IF NOT REPLACED IT COULD SEPARATE CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE RADIATOR, ENGINE, OR BODILY INJURY. I PICKED UP MY VEHICLE ON THE DAY THAT IT WAS IN THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. I SIGNED AND WAS GIVING A REPAIR ORDER NUMBER JECS380694 DATED 2/25/2016. THE INVOICE STATES THE RECALL WAS PREFORMED AND THE COOLING FANS WERE REPLACED AS DIRECTED BY THE RECALL CAMPAIGN. ON THE DRIVE BACK TO MY RESIDENCE I NOTED A RATTLE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF MY VEHICLE WITH INCREASED SPEED OR WHEN DRIVING OVER BUMPS. WHEN I RETURNED TO MY RESIDENCE I OPENED THE HOOD TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS CAUSING THE RATTLE. I NOTICED NONE OF THE UPPER GRILL BOLTS WERE INSTALLED AND THE GRILL WAS LOOSE. I THEN INSPECTED THE LOWER SKID PLATE OF THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED IT WAS LOOSE AND UNFASTENED AS WELL. I THEN INSPECTED THE COOLING FAN BLADES AND FOUND THEY HAD NOT BEEN REPLACED AS DIRECTED BY THE RECALL OR AS STATED ON THE REPAIR ORDER. I HAVE ATTACHED A COPY OF THE REPAIR ORDER AND PICTURES OF THE UNREPAIRED VEHICLE. I HAVE OPENED A CASE WITH DAIMLER CHRYSLER, CASE #28814838. I DID RETURN BACK TO LARSON DODGE 2/26/2016 AND REQUESTED THE HARDWARE BACK TO FASTEN MY GRILL AND SKID PLATE. THE SERVICE MANAGER AND SHOP FOREMAN INSPECTED MY VEHICLE AT THAT TIME. THEY INSPECTED, DETERMINED, AND ADMITTED THE RECALL WAS NOT PREFORMED. I INFORMED THEM I WOULD BE RETURNING HOME AND CONTACTING THE VEHICLES MANUFACTURER.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 155,000.

AFTER INSPECTING THE VEHICLE, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE BLADES ATTACHED TO THE MOTOR FAN FRACTURED INTO PIECES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS EXPERIENCING THE FAILURE IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 06V199000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 115,000.

A FEW MONTHS AFTER REPLACEMENT OF HEAD, STARTED TO LOOSE ANTIFREEZE AGAIN REPLACED HEAD AGAIN IN NOV 2014. HAD VEHICLE BACK FOR ONE WEEK, LOST ALL ANTIFREEZE, MIXED WITH OIL AGAIN. COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO SUDDENLY LOOSE ALL POWER. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, THE PISTON SKIRT HAD CRACKED AND EVENTUALLY BROKE AWAY CAUSING A COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE ENGINE. RESOLUTION WAS TO REPLACE THE ENGINE. THIS IS A FAIRLY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE JEEP 4.0 ENGINE AFTER THE PISTON WAS REDESIGNED AROUND 2000-2001. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING WHO STATED THAT THE HYDRAULIC FAN MODULE WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. ADDITIONALLY, THE HEAT WOULD NOT ACTIVATE. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE BLEND DOOR WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE BLEND DOOR WAS REPLACED BUT FAILED A SECOND TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. MY DAUGHTER CALLED BECAUSE OF A NOISE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. I WENT TO HER WORK, RAISED THE HOOD, STARTED THE ENGINE, AND SHORTLY 1-2 MINUTES THEREAFTER, A LOUD POPPING/GRINDING OCCURRED. THE FAN DISINTEGRATED SENDING PARTS THROUGH THE RADIATOR, SHROUD, AND TOES OF MY LEFT SHOE. AND INJURY COULD HAVE OCCURRED BUT DID NOT. I FOUND 1999-2004 JEEPS HAD A RECALL FOR THIS VERY TYPE OF EVENT. HOWEVER, IT MISSED HE VIN. I BELIEVE ALL OF THESE VEHICLES SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. MY YOUNGEST SON HAS A 1999 THAT THE FAN CAME APART DAMAGING THE RADIATOR AND RESULTING IN ENGINE FAILURE. I HAVE OWNER 7 JEEPS BUT NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE. THE HEAD CRACKING ISSUE SEEMS TO BE THE RESULT OF SEVERAL BAD CASTINGS AND I CAN ONLY SPECULATE THAT THE CAST IRON USED IN ONE LARGE BATCH MADE AROUND THE YEAR 2000 MUST HAVE BEEN OF POOR QUALITY. THE AREA BETWEEN THE NO.3 AND 4 EXHAUST PORTS IS THE HOTTEST PART OF THE HEAD AND IS SUBJECTED TO THE LARGEST TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATIONS, MAKING THAT THE AREA MOST PRONE TO CRACK. THE FIRST SIGN OF A PROBLEM IS UNEXPLAINED LOSS OF COOLANT. IF THERE ARE NO EXTERNAL COOLANT LEAKS, REMOVE THE OIL FILLER CAP AND LOOK BETWEEN THE VALVE SPRINGS OF THE NO.3 AND 4 CYLINDERS.

1. VEHICLE WAS LOSING COOLANT BUT NOTHING SHOWING UP IN THE ENGINE OIL COOLANT OR BURNING OUT THE TAIL PIPE. I WAS GOING THROUGH ABOUT A HALF GALLON PER WEEK. VEHICLE MAINTAINED LOSS OF COOLANT FOR ABOUT 6 MONTHS, THE ADDED PROBLEM OF LOST OIL PRESSURE THEN BECAME A PROBLEM. 2.EVENTUALLY THE HEAD STARTED LEAKING BAD ENOUGH THAT COOLANT WAS PRESENT IN THE OIL, AT WHICH POINT THE PROBLEM WAS PRESENT AND ABLE TO DIAGNOSE. 3. AT THAT POINT THE MAIN BEARINGS WERE A COMPLETE LOSS AND DETERMINED THAT THE CAM BEARINGS WERE GONE AS WELL AND HAD TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE MOTOR. *TR

APPROXIMATELY 5 YEARS AGO, THE HEAT STOPPED WORKING ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF MY 2001 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. THEN LAST YEAR, THE HEAT AND A/C STOPPED WORKING COMPLETELY. THIS MAKES FOR VERY DANGEROUS DRIVING CONDITIONS AS VISIBILITY IS GREATLY REDUCED AT TIMES. ITS TOO COSTLY FOR ME TO REPAIR MYSELF. IT APPEARS THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM FOR MOST OF THESE VEHICLES AND I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY SOMETHING HASN'T BEEN DONE ABOUT IT. ALSO, THE PASSENGER SIDE SEAT HEATING ELEMENT STOPPED WORKING AFTER IT APPARENTLY SHORTED OUT, LUCKILY, NO FIRE OCCURRED. AND THE HYDRAULICS THROUGH OUT THE VEHICLE HAVE STOPPED WORKING AND I NOTICED THIS WHEN FIRST THE HOOD CAME DOWN ON MY HEAD AND THEN THE REAR WINDOW! I'VE ALSO HAD TO REPLACE THE ENGINE AND IT WAS DUE TO PROBLEMS WITH THE COOLANT/HYDRAULIC FAN...AT A PRICE TAG OF $4000.00... *TR

THE CAR OVERHEATED AND YOU CAN HEAR THE BOILED COOLANT FLUSHING BACK INTO THE RESERVOIR AND POURING OUT THROUGH THE DRAIN. THIS I FOUND OUT WAS CAUSED DUE TO THE MALFUNCTIONING OR RATHER ELECTRICAL SHORTING OF THE ECM (ENGINE CONTROL MODULE) LOCATED IN THE HOOD NEAR THE FIREWALL BEHIND THE COOLANT RESERVOIR. THIS CAUSES A FAILURE IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SO THE FAN THAT IS SUPPOSED TO KICK ON WHEN YOU TURN ON THE AIR FAILS TO START. APPROX. 2 YEARS AFTER PURCHASE DATE (50,000 MILES DRIVEN), THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND I WAS INFORMED BY A REGISTERED CHRYSLER DEALER THAT THE CAR NEEDED A NEW ENGINE. THE EXPENSE TO PERFORM THE DIAGNOSTIC WORK AND INSTALL REPLACEMENT ENGINE AND RELATED PARTS AMOUNTED TO $4,500. I WAS A DILIGENT CAR OWNER WITH A VERY SMALL INCOME, A SINGLE PARENT WHO HAS TO WORK, AND A 5 YEAR CAR-PAYMENT PLAN -- IN ESSENCE, I CHANGED THE OIL, TOOK THE CAR FOR ANY SERVICE OR REPAIR NEEDED. I GATHER FROM CALLS TO CHRSYLER AND MY JEEP DEALERSHIP THAT I JUST GOT A "BAD" ENGINE AND BECAUSE IT'S OUT OF THE 2-YEAR WARRANTY THERE IS NO COURSE OPEN TO ME TO BE REIMBURSED FOR THE REPAIRS DONE. VEHICLE HAS BETWEEN 48000 AND 49000 MILES ON IT. WAS TOLD IT WAS SENDING UNIT THEN GOT CALL SAYING THAT IT WASNT AND WOULD HAVE TO DROP OIL PAN. WAS ALSO TOLD NO SIGN OF COOLANT LEAK OR MIX WITH OIL. I NOW HAVE RECIEVED CALL INDICATING THAT IT COULD BE BLOWN HEAD GASKET WITH MILES INDICATED ABOVE. AFTER FURTHER INQUIRE I FOUND THAT NONE OF THE BASIC TESTING WAS DONE TO CHECK FOR OIL AND COOLANT MIX, THIS WAS ADMITED TO ME BY JEFF WHO IS ONE OF THE SERVICE ATTTENDANTS. JEEP SHOULD BE THE ONE PAYING FOR A BLOWN HEAD GASKET WHEN THE CAR HAS THESE LOW MILES ON IT. JEEP DEALER SHOULD ALSO BE COVERING COSTS SINCE THEY FAILED THEIR FUDICIARY DUTY TO PROPERLY DIAGNOSE THE CAR WITH THE BASIC CHECKS.

THE VEHICLE WITH 10529 MILES LOST ALL POWER DURING HIGHWAY DRIVING AT ABOUT 55 MPH. THE ENGINE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. AFTER CONSIDERABLE TIME IN THE DEALER'S SHOP DURING WHICH THE PROBLEMS WERE APPARENTLY DIFFICULT ENOUGH TO WARRANT CONSULTATION WITH THE MANUFACTURER, THE DRIVE OIL PUMP, THE MAIN COMPUTER (MODULE POWERTRA.), CAMSHAFT SENSOR, AND CRANKSHAFT SENSOR WERE REPLACED. AT 10747 MILES, THE ENGINE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. THE CAR WAS AGAIN TOWED TO THE GARAGE ALTHOUGH IT HAD BEEN RUNNING FOR ABOUT 3/4 MILE AFTER THE LIGHT CAME ON. THE DIAGNOSIS WAS THAT THE #4 CYLINDER WAS MISFIRING. THE SYNCHRONIZATION WAS RESET WITHOUT ANY PARTS REPLACEMENT.
