Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Veloster, 2012 Santa Fe, 2011-2013 Sonata Hybrid, and 2016 Sonata Hybrid vehicles. The connecting rod bearings inside the engine may wear prematurely, which over time can result in engine damage.
Risk: A damaged engine can increase the risk of a fire or it can cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine. If bearing damage is found, the engine will be replaced. Dealers will also install a software update containing a new Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS). Repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 31, 2021. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 198.

Your 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe caught fire on October 29, 2025. The dealership had completed one recall but left another recall open at the time of the fire. Hyundai denied your insurance claim and refused to share the inspection report with you. You believe the incomplete recall may have contributed to the fire and are asking NHTSA to investigate the connection.

Your engine's carrier bearing failed without warning, causing the engine to lock up completely while you were driving. You were able to safely coast off the road, but this could have been dangerous if it happened in traffic or with a new driver. The repair will likely involve replacing the carrier bearing and possibly inspecting the engine for additional damage from the lockup.

After a recall engine software update in October 2024, your check engine light repeatedly comes on and your vehicle enters "limp mode," which severely limits engine RPM and acceleration. This makes the car unsafe to drive, especially in traffic or on highways where you need quick acceleration. The dealership has replaced the knock sensor and reset the software multiple times since October, but the problem keeps returning, and as of March 2025 the issue remains unresolved. Fixing this will likely require Hyundai to reprogram or replace the engine control module or diagnose a deeper engine sensor issue caused by the original recall update.

Your engine is stalling while you're driving, and you're hearing loud knocking sounds from the engine. The mechanic confirmed the engine is knocking and stalling, which creates a safety risk since the engine could shut off unexpectedly and cause a crash. Fixing this will likely require a full engine diagnostic and inspection to identify the cause of the stalling and knocking, which could involve replacing internal engine components or sensors.

Your 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe is subject to a recall for connecting rod bearing failure that could cause an engine fire. Hyundai has refused to acknowledge responsibility for the recall and is requiring you to travel to distant dealerships at significant personal expense, despite the safety risk. The issue stems from metal chips left in the engine after manufacturing, and your check engine light is now on. Addressing this will require either having the engine inspected and repaired at an authorized Hyundai dealership or seeking a resolution through NHTSA.

Your check engine light came on and your car went into engine protection mode, limiting acceleration to 2,000 RPM—a safety issue on the highway. A diagnostic code (P1326) pointed to a possible connecting rod bearing problem, but the dealership replaced the knock sensor instead, and the light returned within a week. The dealership now says your engine needs complete replacement at high cost, but won't cover it under warranty because your car passes their bearing test, and they claim this isn't related to the known THETA II engine recall for your model year. The fix would likely involve either replacing the knock sensor correctly, diagnosing the actual failing engine component, or potentially replacing the entire engine if internal damage is confirmed.

After your dealership replaced your engine due to a recalled connecting rod bearing failure, you noticed several new problems when you picked up the car: a tire pressure warning light, a burned-out right front turn signal, vibration, and poor handling. The dealership says you need new motor mounts (at $3,000) and that the tire pressure sensor batteries failed, but these issues didn't exist before your engine work. You believe the dealership's multipoint inspection should have caught these problems before returning your car, and you don't feel safe driving it. The repair may involve replacing the motor mounts, tire pressure sensor batteries, and checking alignment or suspension components.

Electrical System,engine →3 issues
Your engine failed to start in November 2024 with all dashboard lights coming on and loud clanging noises. After the engine was repaired, your car has experienced severe electrical problems including shutting off while driving at highway speeds, even after replacing the alternator twice and installing a new battery. The electrical issues make the vehicle unsafe to drive and continue despite multiple repair attempts.

Your car is consuming oil rapidly and losing power while driving. The engine is throwing failure codes, and even after adding oil, your car won't go faster than 50 mph and keeps shutting off unexpectedly. This requires a full engine diagnostic to determine if there's an oil leak, internal engine damage, or a separate electrical issue causing the power loss.

About 11 months after a software update to your knock sensor, the knock sensor itself failed and needed replacement. Your SUV went into limp mode, losing power and acceleration, and required a tow. You'll see the engine malfunction light blinking on and off on your dashboard. The repair involved replacing the knock sensor and cost $643.90.

Electrical System →2 issues
Your car's electrical system is failing repeatedly. Even after replacing the 12-volt battery multiple times, the battery terminals become corroded within weeks of replacement, and the battery continues to die. Mechanics have been unable to find the underlying cause of the problem. This likely involves diagnosing the charging system or an electrical drain that's damaging the battery.

Your car's driver-side front window has malfunctioned multiple times—first going up and down erratically when you tried to operate it, then stopping working entirely, and now getting stuck in the closed position again without warning. Your driver-side rear window also dropped down into the door on its own without you operating it. The dealer has repaired some instances but not all. Fixing this will likely involve replacing the window regulator and motor assembly, which controls the window's movement.

Suspension,structure →1 issue
Your rear subframe collapsed while driving due to severe rust and corrosion, causing your rear wheel to lose alignment and the vehicle to become uncontrollable. Although you were traveling slowly and no one was injured, your car is now undrivable and required towing. Your vehicle is affected by Hyundai recall campaign #947, but you're experiencing delays in getting Hyundai customer care to follow up on your claim. The repair will likely involve a complete rear subframe replacement and inspection of underlying structural damage from rust.

Unknown Or Other,engine →1 issue
Your engine's connecting rod broke, which created a hole in the engine block and caused your engine and the underside of your car to catch fire while driving on the highway. There was no warning—no dashboard lights or messages appeared before the fire started, even though the car was running normally. The fire was confirmed by your insurance company, police inspection, and Hyundai. Fixing this will require a complete engine replacement or major engine rebuild.

Engine And Engine Cooling →1 issue
While driving at highway speeds, your Santa Fe made a loud banging noise and smoke poured from under the hood and through the air vents, blocking your view of the road. You noticed a significant oil leak underneath the vehicle, but no warning light came on. Your vehicle is part of a recall campaign for an engine issue, but the dealer refused to cover the repair under the recall because your title is branded (due to previous hail damage).

Exterior Lighting,engine →1 issue
Your engine is shutting off while driving, which has happened multiple times on the same bridge. When this occurs, all dashboard lights come on and you need to shift into neutral and restart the engine. Additionally, your passenger-side headlight and driver-side tail light don't work consistently—you can get them to turn on by hitting the light fixture. This is a safety concern as you've already been stopped by police for the non-functioning lights.

Suspension,electrical System,engine →1 issue
Your engine randomly shuts off while driving, even when you're in gear, and then restarts immediately—this has happened repeatedly since you bought the car. You're also experiencing electrical issues like your headlights not turning on reliably and a steering pull to the right when first driving. Your check engine light came on after a recall service and mechanics cleared the code, but it keeps coming back on. These issues likely involve a fuel delivery or ignition problem, and possibly an oxygen sensor or electrical fault that needs proper diagnosis and repair rather than just clearing the warning light.
