NHTSA Campaign: 17V769000

Component: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:PEDALS AND LINKAGES

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Elantra sedan, coupe and GT vehicles. The brake pedal stopper pad can deteriorate allowing the brake light switch plunger to remain extended when the brake pedal is released. This will allow the brake lights to remain illuminated continuously. It can also allow the shift lever to be moved without depressing the brake pedal, or activate the engine management brake pedal override feature.

Risk: If the brake light switch plunger does not retract as it should when the brake pedal is not being pressed, the brake lights may stay illuminated preventing accurate communication to following vehicles that the vehicle is slowing or stopping. Additionally, if the brake switch plunger is not retracted, then the transmission can be shifted out of PARK without depressing the brake pedal. Either condition increases the risk of a crash.

Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake pedal stopper pad, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin February 8, 2018. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 170. This campaign expands recall 16V574.

NHTSA Campaign: 23V651000

Component: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2015 Elantra, Genesis Coupe, Sonata Hybrid, 2012-2015 Accent, Azera, Veloster, 2013-2015 Elantra Coupe, Santa Fe, 2014-2015 Equus, 2010-2012 Veracruz, 2010-2013 Tucson, 2015 Tucson Fuel Cell, and 2013 Santa Fe Sport vehicles. The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module may leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.

Risk: An engine compartment fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the ABS fuse, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 10, 2024 through October 11, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 251.

While driving on the highway at 70 mph, your engine suddenly seized without any warning signs, causing a complete loss of power. You were able to safely coast to the shoulder, but the sudden failure created a dangerous situation. The engine failure may be related to manufacturing defects involving metallic debris that can damage engine bearings. Fixing this will likely require engine replacement or a complete engine rebuild.

Your 2014 Elantra GT has experienced ongoing engine problems including misfires, excessive oil consumption, and loud noises when oil runs low, eventually leading to engine failure. The failed engine damaged your catalytic converter, and the dealership is quoting over $10,000 to replace both—a cost you're facing because the repair need exceeded your extended warranty mileage. You've spent the past year visiting mechanics trying to resolve a persistent check engine light that kept returning even after tune-ups and spark plug replacements.

Your engine is burning through oil much faster than normal. You had an oil change on September 3rd, 2025, but by November 7th your oil level was completely empty—even though you only drive about 60 miles per day. Your check engine light has been flashing due to dangerously low oil after just two months. The shop has found that your engine is running too hot, which is causing the oil to burn off, and they've already tried resealing an oil leak twice without solving the problem.

Your engine revs abnormally when you start the car while parked, and the engine control light hasn't come on to warn you. You've also noticed that when you press the accelerator at a stop sign, the car jerks forward before responding normally—this has happened multiple times. Your dealer checked it twice but couldn't reproduce the problem, though the manufacturer is aware of the issue.

Your engine may be experiencing piston slapping, which is a knocking sound coming from the upper part of the motor. This typically indicates internal engine wear that can lead to engine failure. Since your vehicle is out of warranty, you'll need to have a mechanic diagnose the issue and likely perform engine repairs or replacement.

While driving at 25 MPH and attempting to avoid a tractor-trailer, your daughter pressed the brake pedal but the brakes didn't engage, causing the car to crash into a utility pole. The front passenger side was damaged, the Traction Control Warning light came on, and the airbags didn't deploy. The brake system may need complete inspection and repair to identify why the brakes failed to respond.

Your clock spring assembly has failed, causing multiple safety issues: your airbag warning light stays on and your driver-side airbag won't deploy, your horn doesn't work, and your steering wheel cruise control buttons are non-functional. This is a critical safety problem since the airbag failure means you and your front passenger lack proper protection in a crash. The repair will involve replacing the clock spring assembly, which is the electrical connector that controls the airbag, horn, and cruise control circuits in your steering wheel.

Your 2014 Elantra's 2.0-liter engine is experiencing stalling and knocking noises, and a mechanic has diagnosed it as early-stage engine failure. This engine model is part of a known class action settlement due to reported issues like seizure, stalling, and potential fires. Hyundai is refusing warranty coverage citing your rebuilt title, even though their stated policy only excludes salvage and total-loss vehicles. Fixing this will likely require engine repair or replacement under warranty or through the settlement program.

Your oil warning light keeps coming back on every few days, and you're hearing a hard knocking sound from the engine that goes away temporarily after adding oil. The engine also runs hotter than normal. Since your previous Hyundai had a similar issue that was recalled, you're concerned this car may have the same defect, especially since it falls within the recall year range (2012-2019). Additionally, your car's door lock beep sound has stopped working. The fix will likely involve inspecting the engine for oil consumption problems or internal defects, and diagnosing the door lock alarm system.
