FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles with a 2.0L GDI or 2.0L GTDI engine. The Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, possibly causing excessive vacuum in fuel vapor management system.

Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module. Dealers will also check for fault codes and replace the CPV as needed. If the CPV is replaced, dealers will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module as necessary. The recall began August 19, 2019. Owners may contact Ford Customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S32. Note: Until the vehicle is serviced for this concern, owners are advised to keep the fuel tank at least halfway full.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012 and 2017 Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GDI gasoline engines and 2013-2014 Focus ST vehicles equipped with 2.0L GTDI engines, previously recalled under 18V-735. The affected vehicles did not have the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) updated as intended. Therefore, the Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, possibly causing excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor management system.

Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module. Dealers will also check for fault codes and replace the CPV as needed. If the CPV is replaced, dealers will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module as necessary. The recall began July 29, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S22.

The canister purge valve has failed. Was not defective when recall #19S22 was performed. Car failed to start repeatedly and would not idle after refilling the tank from low (fuel light on) to approximately 75%. Eventually, the car did start and after keeping the RPMs at 2000 for a few minutes, the car is back to idling normally. Check engine light did not appear until 3 days after the stall at the gas station, which had a DTC P1450 code indicating inability for the car to bleed the fuel tank, suggesting the canister purge valve. Ford should offer the free replacement of the defective purge valve and inspection of the carbon canister and fuel tank even after the 19S22 recall was performed (which was just a software update and inspection at the time of service). The possibility of the car stalling not just at the gas station is a safety issue for others and the occupant because of the possibility of a sudden loss of power/becoming an obstruction/or abruptly stopping on the road.

On 4/20/23 while driving home from work on the highway my car stalled and after pulling over would not start. The check engine ight had come one. On 4/21/23 I took my car to a mechanic who found the p0456 fault in the PCM which was tied to an active recall on my vehicle. The mechanic printed out the recall information and recommended replacing the cannister purge valve, fuel tank and fuel pump assembly. They suggested I take it to the local ford dealer to have the recall work done as it would be covered. On 4/27/23 I took my car to the dealership to have the recall work done. The dealer reprogrammed the PCM and replaced the vapor canister purge solenoid. On 5/15/23 while driving home from work on the highway my car stalled again and after pulling over would not start. The fuel tank has deformed, but less than the 1 inch ford is requiring to replace it and the distance to empty is still inaccurate. On 5/16 I dropped the car back off at the dealer. They looked at the car the next day and refused to address the outstanding issues.

There was a past recall for the purge valve canister and the fuel pump and I was never notified from Ford about the recall when it was open. Now they are asking me to pay out of pocket for these repairs the dealership is asking $1400 to repair. Ford shoild honor there recalls even if the recall is closed. Now that I have the problem with the fuel system it is affecting my fuel tank as well. I have been buying Ford cars for over 20 years. The least they can do is offer financial assistance. If this is affecting my fuel tank now my car can catch on fire. I can't drive my vehicle more than two miles before it starts to slow down. At the time of the recall my vehicle had 83,000 miles. it now has 140,000.

Daughter's car has hesitation when driving, took to son who is mechanic. He said it has hesitation, cough idle, loss of power and the gas tank is malformed. He said he looked up the vin and it showed recall 18532-51. I looked on fords website and see that this is recall for their reference number 19S22. My son said this is dangerous because that issue with the fuel tank vacuum could cause the gas tank to crack. I called ford service center to schedule a recall repair but they told me her vin does not show that recall. This car has all the symtoms of the recall, the vin showed up for my son, and the recall is mentioned on fords werbsite. We need to have this repaired. It is a known issue for 2012-2013 ford focuses. Why wouldn't her car be covered??

The car stalled several times while driving. After a mechanics evaluation it was determined that there was a fuel delivery problem. After further evaluation it was confirmed that the problem was a defective purge solenoid. This item was recalled by Ford. However, they did not include this vehicle (by date) in the recall. The recall lists cars made until July 2012 and this vehicle was manufactured in May of 2013. The effect of the defective purge solenoid caused damage to other components of the fuel delivery system. I am now forced to pay for the repairs out-of-pocket. For a problem that is known by (and recalled by) Ford but is excluded from the recall. NOT FAIR

ONCE IT HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES, I HAD TAKEN IT TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALER. AFTER $1200 REPAIR, I INVESTIGATED AND FOUND OUT ABOUT ALL OF THE ISSUES WITH THIS TRANSMISSION. WHY WOULD FORD NOT HAVE DONE A BETTER JOB AT REDESIGNING THESE OR FIXING THEM WITH MILLIONS OF THEM ON THE ROAD? WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY THE VEHICLE STOPPED RUNNING AND LOST ALL POWER WITHOUT WARNING THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE RE-STARTED. WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE TOWED AND LOOKED AT BY AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP SINCE THE FORD DEALERSHIPS WERE TOO BUSY TO LOOK AT A VEHICLE THAT WAS 3 HOURS AWAY FROM THE HOME ADDRESS. THE CAUSE OF THE ISSUE WAS THE EVAPORATOR VACUUM CANISTER. THE FAILURE OF THE CANISTER ALSO CAUSED THE FUEL TANK TO DEFORM AND DAMAGED THE FUEL PUMP/LEVEL SENSOR. THE CANISTER WAS REPLACED AND THE FUEL TANK POPPED OUT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, BUT THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR IS STILL READING INCORRECTLY DUE TO THE DEFORMED TANK.

THIS REGARD THE AIR PURGE VALVE RECALL FOR MY FOCUS ST. HAVE GONE TO THE DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE PART IS NOT AVAILABLE AND TODAY I WAS TOLD THE SOFTWARE IS NOT READY. THIS IS HARD TO BELIEVE IN VIEW OF HOW BOEING HAS FIXED THE SOFTWARE FOR THE 737 ISSUE. THERE SEEMS TO BE AN INDIFFERENCE ON FIXING THIS AND HAS CAUSE ISSUES IS HESITATION AND ALMOST STALLING. I HAVE MANAGED TO CONTROL THIS BY MANIPULATING THE CLUTCH WHICH IS PROBABLY NOT GOOD. I AM SURPRISED THAT FORD HAS NOT EXPEDITED THE FIX.

I RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL IN DEC. 18 FOR CPV VALVE AND DEFORMED GAS TANK. THEY SAID PARTS WOULD BE IN BY END OF MARCH 2019 AS PER LETTER FROM FORD. I CALLED FORD TODAY AND THEY ARE APPARENTLY STILL WORKING WITH THEIR PARTS SUPPLIER AND THEY HAVE NO DATE TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS A FOCUS ST AND THEY SAY ONLY FILL UP THE GAS TANK HALFWAY. WHY HAVE A RECALL IF THEY DON'T FIX THE PROBLEM? WHO IS PROTECTING THE CONSUMER? IS THERE AN ACTUAL TIME LIMIT TO GET THIS DONE?

FIRST SIGN OF AN ISSUE WAS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATING IN OCTOBER OF 2018. SHORTLY AFTER THE ENGINE RANDOMLY STARTED LOSING POWER AND SHUTTING DOWN COMPLETELY AT RANDOM INTERVALS. IT COULD EITHER BE WHILE DRIVING OR SITTING AT A STOP LIGHT. I GO TO ACCELERATE AND NOTICE THE ENGINE HAS SHUT OFF. THE CAR WILL FREQUENTLY BEHAVE AS IF IT HAS REDUCED POWER WHEN PUSHING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE RPMS OF THE CAR WILL ALSO RANDOMLY FLUCTUATE AS THE CAR IS STRUGGLING TO GET ENOUGH FUEL TO KEEP IT RUNNING WHICH ALSO BRINGS A VERY ROUGH IDLE. THE RPMS DO NOT CLIMB AS QUICKLY AND THE ENGINE HAS A LOW RUMBLE TO IT SOUNDING LIKE IT IS STRUGGLING. THIS IS ALSO ACCOMPANIED BY WHAT SOUNDS LIKE BACKFIRES COMING FROM THE EXHAUST. WHEN REFUELING AND PUTTING THE GAS PUMP INTO THE CAR THERE IS A LARGE HIGH PRESSURE RELEASE FROM THE GAS TANK. UPON TRYING TO RESTART THE CAR THE STARTER MOTOR HAS TO SPIN FOR AN EXTRA 5 SECONDS OR SO UNTIL THE ENGINE TURNS ON. WHEN IT DOES TURN ON IT SPUTTERS AND STRUGGLES TO GET TO A STABLE IDLE RPM.

I AM HAVING AN ISSUE WITH FILLING MY CAR WITH GASOLINE. IT CAN TAKE ME UP TO 20 MINUTES TO PUT $10 WORTH OF GAS IN THE CAR. THE GAS NOZZLE CONSTANTLY WILL CLICK OFF WHEN I AM FILLING THE TANK. IT DOES NOT MATTER IF I AM DOING IT MANUALLY OR IF I SET THE GAS NOZZLE TO THE AUTOMATIC FEATURE. I HAVE TO CONTINUALLY DEPRESS THE NOZZLE TO FILL MY CAR AND IT CONSTANTLY CLICKS OFF. I HAVE TRIED DIFFERENT GAS STATIONS, AND I WILL TRY TO HOLD THE NOZZLE IN DIFFERENT WAY, BUT IT NEVER WORKS PROPERLY.

EVERY START AFTERWARDS STARTS AND RUNS FINE UNTIL THE NEXT GAS UP. I HAVE AN ENGINE CODE I BELIEVE THEY SAID WAS A EVAP CODE, MY FUEL TANK IS STARTING TO CONCAVE ON THE BOTTOM. I TALKED TO MY DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID I'M NOT PART OF THE RECALL, ALTHOUGH HE SAID I FIT ALL THE PARAMETERS OF THE RECALL, BUT MY VIN NUMBER ITS IN THE SYSTEM. THE DEALERSHIP AND THE RECALL NOTICE I RECEIVED IN THE MAIL CONFIRMED THAT MY FUEL TANK READINGS WILL BE INACCURATE DUE TO THIS ISSUE WITH THE DEFORMATION. I BROUGHT MY VEHICLE INTO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THIS ISSUE FIXED AND THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMED TO FIX IT ACCORDING TO FORD'S RECALL. THEY ALSO SAID THAT I SHOULD NOT LONGER HAVE INACCURATE READINGS. TODAY, THE FUEL READING ARE STILL INACCURATE AND I AM CONCERNED THAT MY CAR MAY STALL AND ISSUE IS NOT ACTUALLY RESOLVED. THE READING ARE STILL OVER 100 MILES OFF. THE DEALERSHIP AND FORD REFUSE TO EVALUATE THE ISSUE AND/OR FIX THE ISSUE UNDER THE RECALL. THE PHOTO I PROVIDED BELOW DEMONSTRATES HOW OFF THE FUEL IS. PRIOR TO THIS PHOTO, MY TANK WAS ON EMPTY. I ADDED 5 GALLONS OF GAS OR ABOUT 150 MILES. A FULL TANK IS AROUND 345 MILES TYPICALLY FOR MY CAR BASE UPON HISTORICAL READINGS. IN THE PHOTO, THE ELECTRONIC GAUGE SAYS 215 MILES LEFT WHICH IS WRONG AND THE OTHER GAUGE READS THAT ITS ALMOST FULL (~315MILES) ALSO WRONG. THE READINGS SHOULD SAY AROUND 150 MILES. BOTH GAUGES ARE OFF AND THEY ALSO DO NOT COINCIDE.

THE TURBO IS DISABLED AND HAD REDUCED ACCELERATION, WHICH THE DEALER SAID WAS CRAWL MODE. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THEY SAID THE CODE WAS CAUSED BY THE DEFECTIVE PURGE VALVE DAMAGING MY FUEL PUMP AND WOULD BE COVERED UNDER BY RECALL 18S32. THERE ALSO SEEMS TO BE A WIRING ISSUE WITH THE WIPER SYSTEM. IT WAS DISCOVERED TO NOT BE WORKING ONE DAY WHEN I WENT TO USE THE WIPER WASHER FLUID TO CLEAN THE WINDSHIELD. TO SIMPLY HAVE THE ENGINE DIE AND COST THRU TRAFFIC TO THE SHOULDER. MY CAR HAS ONLY 28000 MILES ON IT. THE DEALERSHIP TELLS ME A SENSOR FAILED, THE TANK IS WARPED AND THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM MUST BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $2300. IT IS NOT COVERED UNDER ANY WARRANTY AS THE CAR IS OLDER THAN 5 YEARS.

WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM A VACATION IN FLORIDA ON 9-15-18 (SATURDAY), I WAS DRIVING I75N IN THE THIRD OF FOUR LANES GOING 75-80 MPH. SUDDENLY MY CAR SLOWED DOWN ABRUPTLY, I HELD THE GAS PEDAL TO THE FLOOR BUT THE CAR CONTINUED TO LOSE SPEED. I QUICKLY TURNED ON MY EMERGENCY FLASHERS AND TURN SIGNAL TO GET OVER TWO LANES INTO THE BERM. THANKFULLY I WAS NOT HIT BY THE 80 MPH TRAFFIC SPEEDING BY. ONCE IN THE BERM, THE CAR JUST DIED. IT WOULD NOT TURN ON AGAIN. MY LIGHTS ALL ILLUMINATED, THE GAS LIGHT, THE BATTERY LIGHT, THE SEATBELT LIGHT AND THE OIL LIGHT, A CLICKING NOISE WAS ALSO HEARD. IT WAS 95 DEGREES THAT DAY IN FLORIDA AND I WAS TRAVELING WITH MY SISTER AND MY THREE DOGS. MY DOGS ARE FLAT FACED DOGS WHO CANNOT TOLERATE HEAT. THEY QUICKLY DECLINED AND WERE IN THE PROCESS OF HEAT STROKE AS WE WERE WAITING FOR HELP TO ARRIVE FOR US. WE DID EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO KEEP THEM COOL WITHOUT THE AIR CONDITIONING WORKING, BUT IT WAS FAILING. WE DID MANAGED TO GET HELP FROM A SEMI TRUCK DRIVER WHO ALLOWED US TO SIT IN HIS AIR CONDITIONED CAB, FINALLY THE DOGS WERE SAFE. WE WAITED FOR THE STATE HWY PATROL AND THE TOW TRUCK. THE TOW TRUCK TOWED MY CAR TO A REPAIR SHOP ABOUT 25 MINUTES AWAY. THE REPAIR SHOP WAS NOT OPEN UNTIL THE FOLLOWING DAY SO WE WERE FORCED TO GET A HOTEL ROOM FOR THE NIGHT. SUNDAY AT NOON, THEY OPENED. TWO AND 1/2 HOURS LATER, THEY CALLED ME TO TELL ME I HAD SIMPLY RUN OUT OF GAS. MY CAR'S GAUGES TOLD ME THAT I HAD 45 MILES TO EMPTY AND 1/4 TANK OF GAS IN THE VEHICLE, SO OBVIOUSLY THIS WAS NOT CORRECT. WE WERE TERRIFIED AND WERE PUT INTO A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. WE ALL COULD HAVE DIED WHEN THE CAR STOPPED IN TRAFFIC AND MY PETS FROM THE HEAT. A RECALL NEEDS TO BE MADE ON THIS PROBLEM AS I HAVE READ MANY ACCOUNTS OF OTHERS WHO HAVE LIVED THROUGH IT AS WELL.

WELL IN THE PAST FEW MONTHS THE "MILES TO EMPTY GAUGE" IS NOT ACCURATE AND I RAN OUT OF GAS AGAIN WHEN IT SAID I HAD 70 PLUS MILES TO EMPTY AND NOW THE GAS GAUGE IS INCORRECT WITH FLUCTUATIONS FROM A QUARTER TO THREE QUARTERS FULL. IM NOW AT THE POINT WHERE I HAVE TO SET MY TRIP METER TO GAUGE WHEN I AM CLOSE TO EMPTY. I ONLY HAVE 80,000 MILES AND AM OUT OF WARRANTY. ACCORDING TO SOME REPORTS, OTHER OWNERS HAVE HAD TO REPLACED THE FUEL TANK THAT WAS DEFORMED DUE TO THE ISSUE OF FAULTY FUEL GAUGE. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WITH NO OTHER SYMPTOMS, DEALER REPLACED PURGE VALVE. ONE YEAR LATER CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN, BUT OCCASIONALLY TURNED OFF AND BACK ON AGAIN (EVERY FEW DAYS) BETWEEN APPOINTMENTS WITH DEALER. PURGE VALVE REPLACED AGAIN AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AS I WAS LEAVING DEALER CODE 0420. RETURNED TO DEALER AND PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED FINALLY AS PARTIALLY COLLAPSED FUEL TANK (DIFFICULT TO SEE UNLESS CAR WAS ON A LIFT.) DEALER RECOMMENDS REPLACING FUEL TANK, FUEL PUMP, EVAP CAN AND OTHER ASSOCIATED PARTS. BESIDES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT THE ONLY SYMPTOM IS OCCASIONAL LACK OF POWER WHEN ACCELERATING. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THIS SYMPTOM IS SOMEWHAT SIMILAR TO THE "SHUDDER" PROBLEM FIXED BY REPLACING THE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY. SO, HAVING RECENTLY DONE THAT CLUTCH ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT THIS FELT LIKE A SHADOW OF THE FORMER PROBLEM AND I IGNORED THE ISSUE UNTIL I GOT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS. I CONTACTED FORD DIRECTLY TO SEE IF THEY WOULD REIMBURSE FOR THE EXPENSIVE REPAIRS. THEY HAVE NOT ISSUED A RECALL AND I AM PAST THE BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY SO THEY WOULD NOT ASSIST...THEY WERE VERY POLITE, BUT UNWILLING TO PAY. ADDITIONAL NOTE ON THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT: THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, WHEN IT CAME ON, WOULD USUALLY STAY ON FOR A FEW DAYS AND THEN EITHER LATE AT NIGHT OR EARLY IN THE MORNING I WOULD FIND THAT IT WAS OFF. AND IT WOULD STAY OFF FOR A FEW DAYS AT A TIME AS WELL. THE VERY NEXT DAY, I FILLED UP MY CAR W/ 11 OR 12 GALLONS OF GAS THEN MY ENGINE IMMEDIATELY HAD TROUBLE STARTING. I KNEW MY BATTERY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AS I HAVE OWNED THE CAR FOR 3+ YEARS AND HAVE YET TO REPLACE THE BATTERY. IT TOOK 4 TRIES FOR MY ENGINE TO START THEN I DROVE TO AN AUTO PARTS STORE THAT WAS CONVENIENTLY ACROSS THE STREET AND THEY PERFORMED A BATTERY TEST. IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT MY BATTERY WAS LOW. THE STORE EMPLOYEE ALSO DID AN ENGINE LIGHT DIAGNOSTIC AND THE CODE P-1450 APPEARED, A PURGE VALVE MALFUNCTION. I DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO REPLACE MY BATTERY AT THE MOMENT AS I HAD CLASS TO ATTEND TO. AFTER CLASS, I DROVE TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP, RIATA FORD IN MANOR, TX, AND INFORMED THEM OF MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BEING ON. THE SERVICE ADVISER PLUGGED IN THE COMPUTER CODE READER AND READ THE SAME P-1450 CODE AND DECIDED TO "CLEAR IT". HE ASKED ME IF I HAD RECENTLY FILLED UP THE CAR W/ GAS AND I SAID YES, JUST A FEW HOURS AGO. HE TOLD ME THE CODE HAS BEEN 'CLEARED" AND TO COME BACK IF THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES BACK ON. I THEN WENT TO AN AUTO PARTS STORE AND PURCHASED AND INSTALLED A BRAND NEW BATTERY. THE CAR STILL DIDN'T SEEM TO DRIVE AT ITS 100% CAPABILITY AND SOMETIMES ALMOST STALLING OUT. A DAY OR TWO LATER, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES BACK ON AGAIN AND I RETURN TO RIATA FORD. THEY PERFORM A FULL DIAGNOSTIC AND INFORM ME THAT THE PURGE VALVE IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY, CAUSING MY FUEL TANK TO COLLAPSE W/ FUEL PUMP DAMAGE. I WAS QUOTED A $2,000 REPAIR COST. I KNOW THAT FORD HAS ISSUED A RECALL ON THE SAME EXACT PART FOR THEIR FUSION MODELS AS WELL AS MERCURY MILANS. THERE IS ALSO A FLORIDA CLASS ACT LAWSUIT IN PROGRESS FOR THE SAME EXACT CAR PROBLEM. I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR AND HAVE ONLY OWNED IT SINCE JULY OF 2014. THE COMPUTER MODULE IN MY TRANSMISSION HAS ALREADY HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO SHUDDERING, GEARS SHIFTING INCORRECTLY, AND EVENTUALLY DYING WHILE DRIVING. NOW MY CAR IS IN THE SHOP, AGAIN. THIS TIME FOR CODE P0456, WHICH RELATES TO THE PURGE VALVE CANISTER AND EVAP SYSTEM. A FEW WEEKS AGO, I NOTICED MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND HAD SOMEONE RUN MY CODES. WHENEVER I PUT GAS IN THE CAR, IT TAKES SEVERAL TRIES BEFORE MY CAR WILL START. I HAVE TO PUMP THE GAS WHILE STARTING THE CAR IN ORDER FOR IT TO ACTUALLY START. AFTER I GET GAS, THE CAR WILL SOMETIMES DIE WHILE I AM DRIVING...WHICH HAS HAPPENED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY IN THE MIDDLE OF RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. THIS WILL CAUSE A MAJOR ACCIDENT FOR SOMEONE SOME DAY...MAYBE EVEN A FATAL ACCIDENT. THE FUEL GAUGE ALSO STARTED READING INCORRECTLY AT THE SAME TIME. I WILL HAVE A 1/4 TANK OF GAS, BUT IT WILL REGISTER THAT I HAVE 3/4 FULL AND IS ONLY MOMENTARILY CORRECTED WHEN YOU TURN THE CAR OFF AND RESTART IT. MY 16 YEAR OLD SON WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK WHEN HIS CAR JUST STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. HE PULLED OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND WAITED IN HIS HOT CAR TILL WE COULD GET THERE BECAUSE HE WAS UNSURE OF THE SAFETY OF THE AREA. A FRIEND OF HIS DADS TOWED IT TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP. THEY IMMEDIATELY KNEW WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT. THEY SAID THE PURGE VALVE WAS STUCK AND CAUSED A VACUUM AFFECT ON THE FUEL TANK CAUSING IT TO CAVE IN AND THE FUEL PUMP TO BREAK. THEY WANTED $1400 TO REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP AND FIX THE TANK. AFTER CALLING FORD MOTOR COMPANY 2 TIMES. THE FIRST TIME, THEY COMPLETELY REPORTED THE INCORRECT INFORMATION TO THE SERVICE MANAGER SAYING IT WAS A DOOR HANDLE RECALL ISSUE. NOT TRUE AT ALL. THE SECOND TIME THE WERE GOING TO OFFER FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. SO WE WENT FROM HAVING TO PAY $1400 TO $900 TO NOW I HAD TO PAY $777. I EXPLAINED TO THEM HOW I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR A MANUFACTURER DEFECT AND THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED HARM TO MY CHILD. IT CAN ALSO CAUSE HARM TO OTHERS THAT OWN THIS SAME KIND OF VEHICLE IF IT IS NOT CORRECTED. I ASKED THEM IF IT WAS GOING TO TAKE SOMEONE GETTING KILLED BEFORE THEY DECIDE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. SO THEY PUT A BAND AIDE ON MY SON'S CAR AND SENT US AWAY. I'M VERY UNHAPPY WITH THE WAY THIS MATTER HAS BEEN RESOLVED. MY VEHICLE HAS 67K MILES AND WAS PURCHASED CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED FOUR MONTHS AGO. ON WEDNESDAY 8/17/16 I FILLED MY TANK, AND WHEN I TRIED TO START THE IGNITION RIGHT AFTER FUELING, THE CAR SPUTTERED BUT WOULD NOT TURN ON. AFTER A FEW MORE TRIES THE CAR TURNED ON AND I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE AND TURN THE CAR ON AND OFF WITH NO PROBLEM. THE FOLLOWING DAY I WAS DRIVING ON A SURFACE STREET, AND WHEN THE CAR CAME TO A STOP AT A RED LIGHT IT COMPLETELY SHUT OFF EVEN THOUGH MY GAS GAUGE STILL SHOWED FUEL IN THE TANK. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A FORD DEALERSHIP, AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE PURGE VALVE, WAS STUCK IN THE OPEN POSITION CAUSING MY FUEL PUMP TO DELIVER TOO MUCH FUEL TO THE ENGINE, AND CREATED A VACUUM PRESSURE SO STRONG THAT IT WARPED MY TANK AND DAMAGED MY FUEL PUMP AND FUEL SENSOR, MAKING MY SENSOR THINK THERE WAS MORE GAS IN THE TANK THAN THERE REALLY WAS. THEY INFORMED ME THAT I WOULD NEED A NEW PURGE VALVE, A NEW EVAPORATOR CANISTER, A NEW FUEL TANK AND FUEL PUMP, TOTALING $2100 AND WHICH WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE EMISSIONS COMPONENTS ARE ONLY COVERED FOR 2 YEARS OR 25K MILES THROUGH FORD. THE PURGE VALVE MALFUNCTION IS A KNOWN PROBLEM IN 2012 AND 2013 FORD FOCUSES YET A RECALL HAS NOT BEEN ISSUED BY FORD, AND CUSTOMERS ARE HAVING TO PAY FOR THE EXPENSIVE REPAIRS OUT OF POCKET FOR DEFECTIVE ENGINE COMPONENT THAT WAS NOT DAMAGED BY THE DRIVERS. CAN SOMEONE AT THE NHTSA PLEASE RESEARCH THE VAPOR CANISTER PURGE SOLENOID MALFUNCTION ON 2012-2013 FORD FOCUS? HAVING THE PURGE VALVE STUCK IN THE OPEN POSITION CAN COLLAPSE THE FUEL TANK CAUSING CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE WITH LITTLE TO NO WARNING AND COULD POTENTIALLY LEAD TO ACCIDENT AND INJURY IF THE FAILURE OCCURS ON THE HIGHWAY OR IN TRAFFIC. THE DEALERSHIP LOOKS AT MY VEHICLE THE NEXT DAY AND THEY SAY THE GAS TANKED WAS HIT BY SOMETHING ON THE ROAD WHILE DRIVING. I REPLY I DID NOT HEAR ANYTHING HIT MY CAR. THEY REQUEST MY INSURANCE INFO SO THEY CAN CALL TO FILE A COMP CLAIM. I SAY NO I WILL CALL MY INSURANCE COMPANY MYSELF. MY INSURANCE ADJUSTER COMES OUT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO LOOK AT THE DAMAGE AND WHEN THE DEALERSHIP SHOWS HIM THE GAS TANK THEY SEE THAT THE GAS TANK IS DEFORMED AND THE FUEL PUMP IS FRIED. THE ADJUSTER SAYS THIS IS A MECHANICAL PROBLEM NOT A COMP CLAIM. THE DEALERSHIP DOES SOME FURTHER INVESTIGATING AND SAYS THAT THERE IS A SEAL THAT DID NOT CLOSE IN THE GAS TANK AFTER PUMPING GAS AND THE GAS TANK WAS SUCTION UPPED WITH THE PRESSURE WHILE DRIVING AND FRIED THE GAS PUMP. MY CONCERN IS THE SAFETY OF MYSELF AND THE PEOPLE DRIVING AROUND ME. IF GAS WAS SPRAYING ON THE HIGHWAY WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND THE GAS TANK AND FUEL PUMP MALFUNCTIONS I THINK THIS SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL. THE DEALERSHIP ALSO TOLD US TO CALL THE MANUFACTURER IF WE WANTED TO MAKE A COMPLAIN. THE FUEL LIGHT NEVER WENT ON AND STILL SAID I HAD ABOUT 30 MORE MILES UNTIL E. WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND THEY TOLD ME THEY PUT GAS IN IT AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP. IT SAID I HAD 144 MILES UNTIL E AND THEY CALIBRATED IT AND THE MILEAGE DECREASED TO 133. I DROVE THE CAR 80 MILES AND HAPPENED AGAIN YESTERDAY, BUT THIS TIME I WAS ON A BUSY STATE ROAD GOING ABOUT 55 MPH WITH MY SON IN THE CAR. THE CAR JERKED AND I COULD TELL IT WAS LOSING POWER. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO COAST INTO A SUBDIVISION. THE FUEL LIGHT NEVER WENT ON AND ALSO STATED I STILL HAD ABOUT 33 MILES LEFT UNTIL E. THE CAR HAS BEEN TOWED AGAIN TO SAME DEALERSHIP AND NO WORD ON WHAT IS WRONG. WAS TOLD THEY WERE ON THE PHONE WITH FORD TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM. I AM CURRENTLY IN A RENTAL AND SCARED TO DRIVE MY CAR AS I AM AFRAID THIS WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. ALSO, HAD MANY TRANSMISSION AND CLUTCH ISSUES THIS SUMMER AND THOSE PARTS HAVE SINCE BEEN REPLACED. THE CAR IS A YEAR OLD AND BEEN IN THE SHOP MORE TIMES THAN MY OLD CAR THAT I TRADED IN FOR MY NEW FORD. *TR

MY PERFORMANCE CONCERN STARTED WITHIN THE FIRST WEEK OF OWNERSHIP. I HAD REPORTED WHAT I PERCEIVED AS A PERFORMANCE ISSUE TO THE DEALER BUT OPTED TO GIVE A NEW CAR TIME TO "BREAK IN". 4 WEEKS INTO MY OWNER EXPERIENCE, THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT HELD AND DROVE THE CAR FOR 5 DAYS AND HAD DETERMINED THAT A TRANSMISSION COMPONENT WAS THE CAUSE OF THE ISSUE I WAS EXPERIENCING. I NOW HAVE OVER 10K MILES ON THE VEHICLE AND HAVE HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCE. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT HAS SINCE TOLD ME THAT THE ROUGH IDLE IN PARK OR IN GEAR WITH BRAKE APPLIED IS THE RESULT OF THE "DIRECT INJECTION" TECHNOLOGY USED IN THIS VEHICLE. THE HESITATION EXPERIENCED DURING 0 TO >0 ACCELERATION (GRADUAL OR HARD) IS ALSO THE RESULT OF THE "DIRECT INJECTION" TECHNOLOGY COUPLED WITH ELECTRONIC CLUTCH TECHNOLOGY USED IN PLACE OF A TORQUE CONVERTER. THIS COMBINATION HAS YIELDED NUMEROUS "ALMOST STALLED" CONDITIONS DURING NORMAL DRIVING MANEUVERS INCLUDING ACCELERATION DURING THE COMPLETION OF A LEFT TURN CROSSING ONCOMING LANES OF TRAFFIC. I RAISE THIS CONCERN AS I UNDERSTAND THERE IS AN INVESTIGATION OF F150 VEHICLES WITH "DIRECT INJECTION" TECHNOLOGY AS A POTENTIAL CAUSE FOR THE LOSS OF POWER. MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE FORD FOCUS HAS NOT RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT. MY GOAL IS TO RAISE AWARENESS TO A SIMILAR CONDITION FROM THE SAME MANUFACTURER UTILIZING THE SAME TECHNOLOGY.
