NHTSA Campaign: 15E045000
Component: SUSPENSION:FRONT:WHEEL BEARING
The Timken Company (Timken) is recalling certain aftermarket front wheel bearings, part number 510072, sold from January 22, 2015, to May 21, 2015, to be used as service parts on 2001-2012 Ford Escape, 2001-2011 Mazda Tribute, and 2005-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles. The affected wheel bearings have incorrect dimensions of a 42mm bore, 76mm outer dimension, and 39mm width, instead of a 42mm bore, 78mm outer dimension and a 45mm width.
Risk: Use of an incorrectly sized wheel bearing can adversely affect the braking and steering of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Timken has begun notifying distributors who will offer purchasers replacement wheel bearings, free of charge. The recall began on May 21, 2015. Owners may contact Timken customer service at 1-866-984-6536.

Component: HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2005-2008 Ford Escape hybrid electric vehicles manufactured October 13, 2003, to June 20, 2008, and 2006-2008 Mercury Mariner hybrid electric vehicles manufactured June 10, 2005, to June 20, 2008. The coolant pump for the hybrid system may fail resulting in the hybrid electronics overheating.
Risk: If the hybrid electronics system overheats, it may shut down the powertrain, resulting in a stall-like condition, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the original Motor Electronics Coolant (MEC) Pump with an improved brushless pump, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on October 27, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 14S19.
NHTSA Campaign: 15V606000
Component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:FLOOR SHIFT
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2008 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured March 31, 2001, to September 1, 2009. The affected vehicles are equipped with either a 2.3L or 3.0L engine and have had their CD4E transmission replaced with remanufactured one that was rebuilt between June 11, 2015 through July 15, 2015. These service repair part transmissions have a shift lever bolt that may not be properly tightened. As a result, the shift control lever could disengage from the transmission without warning.
Risk: If the shift lever disengages from the transmission, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the gear selection indicator may show that the transmission is in the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not actually be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the transmissions and either tighten the manual shift lever bolt or replace the manual shift lever assembly. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 23, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S28.
NHTSA Campaign: 14V284000
Component: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2008-2011 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured August 18, 2006, through September 11, 2010. The affected vehicles have a steering torque sensor that may not be able to properly detect driver steering input. As a result, the system could remove the Electric Power Steering (EPS) assist.
Risk: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the software for the power steering control module (PSCM) and the instrument cluster module, free of charge. If a vehicle shows a history of a loss of the torque sensor signal or fault codes relating to the PSCM when the vehicle is brought in for the recall remedy, the affected components will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began on July 18, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S05.

Steering →15 issues
Your power steering torque sensor failed and was replaced under recall, but the same part is failing again and creating a safety issue. Ford is refusing to repair it a second time, even though the replacement part has failed in less than 15 years. The repair will likely involve replacing the power steering torque sensor with a newer or improved version.

Your 2008 Ford Escape's electric power steering assist failed again in 2025, even though Ford completed a recall repair in 2014 for the exact same problem. The recall fix was only a software update to the power steering control module — no actual parts like the torque sensor were replaced. When the steering assist fails, your steering becomes very hard to turn, which is a serious safety issue while driving. You may need Ford to replace the faulty torque sensor or other mechanical components rather than just reprogramming the software.

While stopped at a traffic light and trying to turn, your steering wheel suddenly became difficult or impossible to turn and seized up. A warning light shaped like a wrench appeared on your dashboard. The dealer diagnosed this as a failed steering column motor (error code B2278) that needs replacement. Fixing this will require replacing the steering column motor assembly.

Your steering column suddenly locked up while you were driving, making it impossible to turn the wheel in any direction. You heard a few small clicking sounds followed by one loud click right before the steering became completely stuck, which nearly caused a crash. The steering column isn't in a locked position from the key, but it still won't move.

Your car's power steering system has stopped working due to a torque sensor malfunction — this is the same problem that Ford recalled in 2014. Without power steering, your steering wheel will be much harder to turn and more difficult to control. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the torque sensor with diagnostic software and replacing the faulty sensor.

Your car's power steering stopped working while you were turning at 35-40 MPH, making the steering wheel hard to turn. The problem started as an occasional issue but has now become constant. An independent mechanic was unable to diagnose or repair it, and the dealer was unreachable. The fix will likely require a power steering system inspection and repair, which may involve replacing the power steering pump, hoses, or fluid.

Unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your gear shift bushing failed, causing the shift lever to become disconnected from the transmission. When you tried to shift into park on a hill, the car rolled backward because the shifter was stuck in neutral — you had to use the emergency brake to stop it. The dealership said this was a known recall issue but your vehicle's VIN wasn't included in it. Fixing this will involve replacing the gear shift bushing or cable to reconnect the shifter to the transmission.

Electrical System →1 issue
While driving, your dashboard lights suddenly come on, your speedometer and RPM gauge drop to zero, and your air conditioning stops working. You can still control and drive the car, but the problem happens frequently and is frightening. Hitting a bump or tapping the dashboard sometimes fixes it temporarily. Ford diagnosed the dashboard instrument cluster as the faulty component.

Power Train,electrical System →1 issue
Your car's hazard flashers are turning on by themselves at any time, day or night, even while you're driving. Additionally, your transmission oil cooler is leaking fluid, and the bushing that connects your shift cable to the shift lever has broken (fortunately while the car wasn't in use). These issues suggest problems with your electrical system and transmission components that need professional diagnosis and repair.

Steering,air Bags,traction Control System →1 issue
Your steering wheel becomes stiff and hard to turn while driving at various speeds. At the same time, your air bag and traction control warning lights turn on. This problem started around 67,000 miles and hasn't been diagnosed or fixed yet. You'll likely need a mechanic to scan the warning codes and inspect the steering system, electrical connections, and traction control components.
