SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
FORD IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2001-2002 ESCAPE VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM OCTOBER 22, 1999, THROUGH JULY 19, 2002, EQUIPPED WITH A BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR CAP THAT COULD LEAK BRAKE FLUID. IF BRAKE FLUID LEAKS FROM THE CAP, IT COULD COME IN CONTACT WITH THE ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR.
Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR CAP AND THE ABS ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WILL BE MODIFIED. AN INTERIM LETTER WAS MAILED ON JANUARY 20, 2012. DUE TO A PARTS DELAY, HOWEVER, THE REMEDY MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE CURRENTLY. IF PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE, FORD WILL INSTRUCT OWNERS TO PARK THEIR VEHICLES OUTSIDE UNTIL SUCH TIME AS PARTS BECOME AVAILABLE. SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ANTILOCK BRAKES (ABS), THE ABS MODULE CONNECTOR MAY HAVE MISSING OR DISLODGED WIRE SEALS. THIS CONDITION COULD ALLOW CONTAMINATION TO ENTER THE MODULE CONNECTOR, CREATING A POTENTIAL FOR AN ELECTRICAL SHORT.
Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE WIRE HARNESS CONNECTOR TO THE ABS MODULE FOR MISSING OR DISLODGED WIRE SEALS, AND REPAIR OR REPLACE THE HARNESS CONNECTOR AS APPROPRIATE. THE DEALER WILL ALSO INSPECT THE CONNECTOR ON THE ABS MODULE AND REPLACE IT IF IT IS FOUND TO BE CORRODED OR DAMAGED. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 23, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673.

CERTAIN CARDONE MASTER CYLINDERS WITH PART NUMBERS 10-2925, 10-2987, 10-2987MZA, 10-3083, 11-3015, 11-3042, 11-3044, 11-3045, 11-3047, 11-3064, AND 11-3156, AND WITH DATE CODES LOWER THAN DCA7078 SOLD AS REPLACEMENT EQUIPMENT FOR USE ON THE VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. THE SEAL ON MASTER CYLINDER CAN FAIL AND LEAK BRAKE FLUID.
Fix: CARDONE WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND OFFER TO REPURCHASE ANY DEFECTIVE MASTER CYLINDERS. THE RECALL BEGAN DURING APRIL 2007. OWNERS CAN CONTACT CARDONE AT 1-800-777-4780.

Your brake pedal suddenly dropped to the floor with no resistance when you tried to shift into drive, even though the brakes had worked fine minutes earlier. You were able to drive home slowly, but the brakes only worked when the pedal was pressed all the way down. This suggests a possible brake fluid leak or internal brake system failure that should be inspected immediately.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING 15 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND THE VEHICLE PULLED TO THE RIGHT. THE ABS WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH SEVERE RUST ON THE SUBFRAME, MAKING THE VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE SUBFRAME NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V165000 (STRUCTURE) IN WHICH A CROSS BAR WAS INSTALLED UNDER THE SUBFRAME. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 184,000.
WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS BEING SERVICED FOR AN OIL CHANGE AT A NATIONAL CHAIN, BEING STATIONARY, ENGINE OFF, AND AT THE SERVICE BAY, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE BRAKE HOSE EXPLODED . THE ON SITE MANAGER'S PROFESSIONAL OPINION IS THAT THE CAUSE WAS BY CUSTOMER HAVING A PRIOR BRAKE LEAK, AND/OR, OPENING BRAKE FLUID LID AND/OR ADDING BRAKE FLUID CAUSING A BURST.AND THE BRAKE LINE POURING BRAKE FLUID ONTO THE BAY PLATFORM. CUSTOMER INDICATES OTHERWISE.
2001 FORD ESCAPE WAS SITTING IN DRIVEWAY WITH ENGINE OFF. STARTED SMOKING, POPPED HOOD TO FIND FIRE ON ABS MODULE. PULLED OFF BATTERY TERMINAL AND PATTED FIRE OFF. CAR WAS BEING SENT IN THE NEXT WEEK FOR RECALL. WELLSVILLE NY FORD ONLY REPLACED THE BRAKE RESERVOIR CAP AND ABS FUSE BOX. NEVER FIXED THE MODULE, FAULTY SEALS OR BURNT HARNESS, AS PER NHTSA ACTION NUMBER :PE06048.

THIS HAS HAPPEN ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WITH HER. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN STRAIGHT TO SHEEHY FORD OF WARRENTON, VA DEALERSHIP. THEY WERE ABLE TO FIND A CRACK ABS RING THAT THEY SAID WAS THE CAUSE FOR THE JERKING WHILE THE BRAKE WAS APPLIED. REPLACED THE PART. EXPERIENCED THE SAME THING ON THE WAY HOME. RETURNED IT TO FORD DEALERSHIP. THEY WERE NOT ABLE RECREATE THE PROBLEM SO THEY SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. THIS VEHICLE HAS A TOTAL OF 13 RECALLS ACCORDING TO AUTOMD.COM. I AM TALKING ABOUT ABS TONE RING WHICH CRACKS AND CAUSES ABS TO MALFUNCTION. IT BECOMES A SERIOUS ISSUE WHEN IT HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING. INITIAL MALFUNCTION CAUSES ON-BOARD COMPUTER TO "BE CONFUSED" AND BRAKES DON'T PERFORM AS THEY SHOULD, CAUSING EXTENDED BRAKING DISTANCE. ONCE ON-BOARD COMPUTER "RECOGNIZES" THE PROBLEM ABS DASHBOARD LIGHT WILL COME ON AND THE DRIVER IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE. BROKEN ABS TONE RING WILL CAUSE ABS BRAKES TO ENGAGE ON DRY SURFACE EVEN AT THE LOWEST SPEEDS. ON INSPECTION, FRONT LEFT BRAKE HOSE HAD RUPTURED CAUSING TOTAL LOSS OF ALL BRAKING CAPABILITY. EXTREMELY LUCKY NOT TO BE GOING 70 MPH ON THE FREEWAY! STILL WAITING FOR PART FOR BRAKE CYLINDER CAP RECALL ISSUED IN JANUARY! DURING MY RECENT TRAVEL, MY 2001 FORD ESCAPE HAD A SMALL FIRE BURNING THE ABS WIRING WHILE PARKED IN THE GARAGE. THE ANTI-LOCK CONTROL UNIT/MODULE HAD A RECALL BACK IN 2007, 07S51, AND IN 2008 THE MODULE WAS INSPECTED. I BROUGHT THE CAR INTO THE SAME DEALER THAT DID THE INSPECTION ONCE I REALIZED WHAT HAD RECENTLY HAPPENED TO SEE IF THE RECALL WOULD BE HONORED, REGARDLESS OF THE INSPECTION. I WAS TOLD THAT THE RECALL HAD BEEN TAKEN CARE OF BY THE INSPECTION, AND THERE WAS NOTHING THE DEALER COULD DO, UNLESS THEY SOLD ME A $2,000 PART. I CALLED FORD CUSTOMER RELATIONS TO INFORM THEM OF MY SITUATION, AND RECEIVED THE SAME RESPONSE, "THERE IS NOTHING THAT THEY CAN DO TO HONOR THE RECALL". MY MAIN CONCERN IS MY SAFETY, AND I COULD HAVE BEEN INJURED OR MY HOUSE COULD HAVE CAUGHT FIRE. I AM DISTURBED IN THE RESPONSE BY FORD REGARDING MY SAFETY AND LACK OF ASSISTANCE AT THE CORPORATE LEVEL. I FEEL THAT FORD HAS A RESPONSIBILITY TO ITS CUSTOMERS TO INSURE SAFETY, BUT DID NOT RECEIVE THAT ASSURANCE. I HAVE A 2001 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE STAYING AT A HOTEL ON VACATION IN MARFA, TX, I WAS AWAKENED BY MY CAR ALARM GOING OF AT APPROXIMATELY 5:30 AM ON MAY 12, 2010. WHEN I WENT OUTSIDE TO TURN IT OFF, I FOUND SMOKE POURING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD. OUR NEIGHBOR CALLED 911, AND THE CAR CONTINUED TO SMOKE UNTIL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED. AS THE FIRE DEPT. WE WERE HEADING HOME AFTER GETTING OUR DINNER, APPROACHED A STOP LIGHT AND APPLIED THE BRAKES, I THEN NOTICED THE TRUCK WASN'T STOPPING AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS STIFF. I HIT THE BRAKES AGAIN, STILL NOTHING, AGAIN HIT THEM AS HARD AS I COULD, STILL NOTHING, SO I SWERVED TO MISS THE VAN INFRONT OF ME AND HIT A TELEPHONE POLE. WE WERE GOING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH AND THERE WAS NO SIGNS OF BRAKING ON PAVEMENT OR BRAKING ON THE GRASSY AREA LEADING UP TO THE TELEPHONE POLE. WE HAVEN'T HAD PROBLEMS LIKE THIS BEFORE, OUR BRAKES WOULD VIBRATE EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE WHEN APPLIED. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME WE'VE HAD COMPLETE LOSS OF BRAKES. MY FIANCE RESULTED IN BRUISES ON HER FACE AND BACK SPASMS. MY ONE YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WAS ALSO IN THE CAR AND HAD NO INJURIES, HOWEVER, IT TOOK US MONTHS TO GET HER TO BE CALM IN THE CAR. WE ENDED UP HAVING TO BUY A NEW CARSEAT AFTER JUST PURCHASING A FEW MONTHS BEFORE AND I RECEIVED A FAILURE TO CONTROL CITATION. I CONTACTED FORD AND THEY PUT MY COMPLAINT INTO FORD LEGAL GROUP. I WAS UPSET BECAUSE NONE OF THE AIRBAGS WENT OFF, HAD I BEEN FIVE MORE MINUTES DOWN THE ROAD WE WOULD HAVE BEEN IN A 55 MPH ZONE. I WAS FURIOUS THAT THE DEALERSHIP SOLD ME THIS VEHICLE AFTER SWEARING UP AND DOWN THAT IT WAS ONE OF THE SAFEST ON THEIR LOT. WE HAVE YET TO HEAR ANYTHING FROM FORD, WE HAVE RECEIVED A LETTER FROM THEM LECTURING US ON THE USAGE OF THE AIRBAGS, HOW THEY ARE MEANT TO PREVENT FATALITIES NOT INJURIES. OUR INITIAL COMPLAINT WAS THE VEHICLE DID NOT STOP! THE OWNER OF THE DEALERSHIP FEELS HE'S NO LIABLE BECAUSE WE BOUGHT USED WITH NO WARRANTY. THE ABS WARNING LIGHT CAME ON IN MY 2001 FORD ESCAPE. I TOOK IT TO THE FORD SERVICE DEPARTMENT. THEY RAN SOME TESTS. THEY SAID THE ABS MODULE WAS PROBABLY THE CAUSE BUT THEY DID NOT HAVE ONE IN STOCK. THEY WOULD ORDER IT AND CONTACT ME TO SCHEDULE INSTALLATION. THEY DID NOT INDICATE THE VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE TO OPERATE. I DROVE THE CAR BACK HOME AND TO WORK THE NEXT DAY. ON THE WAY HOME AFTER WORK A FIRE STARTED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT LEFT FRONT SIDE WHICH IS NEAR THE BRAKE SYSTEM COMPONENTS. I PUT THE FIRE OUT AND CONTACTED MY INSURANCE COMPANY. THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER DRIVABLE. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE FORD DEALER THE NEXT DAY. NEITHER FORD OR FARMERS INSURANCE COULD PINPOINT THE ORIGIN OF THE FIRE BUT THEIR WAS DAMAGE AROUND THE ABS AND ITS WIRING. FORD HAS DENIED RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DAMAGE. I REMEMBERED A SAFETY RECALL WAS DONE PREVIOUSLY HAVING TO DO WITH THE ABS. I RECHECKED AND DISCOVERED THAT SIMILAR FIRES WERE THE REASON FOR THE RECALL. FORD SAID THEY DID PERFORM THE RECALL ON MY VEHICLE. I CHECKED FURTHER ON LINE AND SAW THAT A SAFETY INVESTIGATION WAS OPENED BECAUSE THE REMEDY BY FORD HAS NOT ELIMINATED VEHICLE ABS WIRING FIRES. I BELIEVE MY FORD ESCAPE IS ANOTHER CASE OF THIS SAFETY DEFECT AND FORD SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DAMAGE AND RELATED EXPENSES I HAVE INCURRED. *TR

THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE FAILURE WAS RELATED TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER 07V156000, SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC, ANTILOCK:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE; HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 81,400 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 81,679.
AN ELECTRICAL SHORT CAUSED THE ABS TO MALFUNCTION. THIS ILLUMINATED THE ABS WARNING LIGHT, WHICH CAUSED THE ABS CONTROL MODULE TO OVERHEAT RESULTING IN A BURNING ODOR, SMOKE, AND ENGINE FIRE. THIS CONDITION OCCURRED WHEN THE VEHICLE IGNITION SWITCH WAS IN THE OFF POSITION, AND WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS BEING OPERATED. IT TURNS OUT THAT THERE WERE SEVERAL RECALLS ON THIS PARTICULAR MAKE AND MODEL WHICH I HAVE NOT BEEN NOTIFIED ABOUT. I HAVE CONTACTED FORD MOTOR COMPANY ABOUT THE RECALLS. TWO DIFFERENT PEOPLE TOLD ME THAT IF THE VIN FOR MY VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, THEN THE MANUFACTURER IS NOT OBLIGATED TO FIX THE SAFETY DEFECT. THE VEHICLE DOES NOT HAVE ANTI- LOCK BRAKES NOW BECAUSE THE CONTROL MODULE HAS BURNED UP, AND THE FUSES HAD TO BE REMOVED. THE PRICE FOR INSTALLATION OF A NEW ABS CONTROL MODULE IS ESTIMATED AT $1500 TO $2500. *TR
WHILE ATTENDING A SCHOOL PLAY, I WAS CALLED OUTSIDE B/C MY FORD ESCAPE WAS SMOKING FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND THE ALARM WAS GOING OFF. I HAD BEEN INSIDE & THE CAR SHUT OFF FOR 25 MIN. BEFORE BEING CALLED OUT. SMOKE & FIRE WAS BILLOWING FROM UNDER THE HOOD, AND FIRE WAS DROPPING ON THE GROUND BY THE TIME THE FIRE DEPT. ARRIVED. THE HOOD OF MY VEHICLE HAD TO BE PRIED UP ON THE SIDES AND FRONT IN ORDER TO PUT OUT THE FIRE. EVERYTHING INSIDE HAD MELTED. THEY ASKED IF I HAD NOTICED ANYTHING UNUSUAL ABOUT THE CAR. IT HAD BEEN A LITTLE SLOW TO START FOR A COUPLE DAYS, BUT SEEMED TO RUN FINE. I THOUGHT PERHAPS I NEEDED TO CHECK THE SPARK PLUGS. THE FIRE DEPT. SUGGESTED I CONTACT FORD TO CHECK ON ANY POTENTIAL RECALLS. FORD MOTOR VERIFIED THAT CONFIRMED THAT RECALL #07S51 DID APPLY TO THE VEHICLE BASED ON MY VIN#. REMEMBERING BACK, EARLIER IN THE WEEK, MY ABS LIGHT DID COME ON, WHICH I THOUGHT WAS UNUSUAL. BUT IT DID NOT STAY ON LONG, SO I WAS NOT CONCERNED. I FILED A REPORT WITH FORD'S CRC. THEY HAVE SUBMITTED THE REPORT TO THEIR GENERAL COUNCIL. THEY SAID TO EXPECT UP TO 15 BUSINESS DAYS BEFORE RECEIVING A RESPONSE ON NEXT THE STEPS. HE RETURNED TO THE DEALER AND THEY WOULD NOT RE-INSPECT THE VEHICLE, HOWEVER, THEY STATED THAT THEY WOULD MAKE A REPAIR THAT WAS IDENTICAL TO THE PREVIOUS REPAIR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 58,000.

BRAKE PROBLEM INVOVING ABS SENSOR RING ON FRONT WHEELS. THIS WHEEL RING LITERALLY CRACKED CAUSING THE ABS LIGHT TO COME ON AND THE BRAKE PEDAL HAD TO BE PRESSED TO THE FLOOR TO OPERATE THE BRAKES. I RECENTLY TOOK MY 2001 FORD ESCAPE IN FOR SERVICE FOR RECALL #07S51. WHILE A PARTIAL REPAIR HAS BEEN COMPLETED THE PARTS TO COMPLETE THE REPAIR TOTALLY WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE UNTIL AUGUST. WHILE FORD STATES THE VEHICLE IS OK TO DRIVE THEY INFORMED ME NOT TO PARK NEAR STRUCTURES OR INSIDE GARAGES UNTIL THE REPAIR IS COMPLETED IN AUGUST, THEY CANNOT BE HELD LIABLE IF I DO SO. TL*- THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE 2001 FORD ESCAPE XLT WIRES UNDER THE HOOD BURNED WHILE SITTING IN THE GARAGE OF HER HOME. SHE DROVE THE VEHICLE ONE HOUR PRIOR TO THE FIRE. THE ALARMS IN HER HOUSE WARNED HER OF THE FIRE. SHE CALLED THE LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT, AND THEY FOUND NO FIRE IN THE HOUSE. THEY THEN CHECKED THE GARAGE AND THEY SMELLED SOMETHING BURNING. THE FIREMAN OPENED AND NOTICED THE WIRES THAT WERE BURNING UNDER THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO TOWN AND COUNTRY, AND THEY INFORMED HER THAT OLD BRAKE FLUID LEAKED ON THE ABS, WHICH WAS THE CAUSE OF THE WIRES BURNING. THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED FOR THE ABS LIGHT COMING ON, AND OFF AT THE LOCAL FIRESTONE, THEY REPLACED THE MASTER CYLINDER . THE WIRES BURNED WITHIN 24 HOURS OF THE REPAIR. THE TOWN AND COUNTRY DEALERSHIP GAVE THE CONTACT A LOANER VEHICLE, AND SHE FELT THIS WAS ODD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED HER THAT IT WOULD COST $2,416.12 TO REPAIR THE WIRES AND THE ABS. THE CAR WAS PARKED FOR ABOUT AN HOUR WHEN MY SISTER IN LAW SAW THE FIRE COMING OUT OF THE ENGINE AREA. I TURNED THE FIRE OFF WITH WATER. THE MASTER CYLINDER WAS COMPLETELY BURNED. I RAN OVER AND POPPED THE HOOD AND THERE WAS SMOKE COMING FROM MY ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM ELECTRONIC CONTROL SYSTEM. I PUSHED THE CAR OUT OF MY GARAGE FEARING A HOUSE FIRE AND A FRIEND UNHOOKED MY BATTERY . WHEN THE SMOKING AND SPARKING SUBSIDED THE ABS CONTROL BOX WAS MELTED AND ALL THE WIRES WERE BURNED AND MELTED. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP TO SEE IF THERE WERE ANY RECALLS AT THIS TIME AND THEY TOLD ME NO. I GOOGLED CONSUMER REPORTS AND SAW AN ARTICLE THAT THIS WAS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT AND THAT YOU WERE INVESTIGATING 8 OTHER SIMILAR INCIDENTS. IT HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AS IT HAS JUST HAPPENED AND HONESTLY IS SEEMS TO BE QUITE EXPENSIVE TO REMEDY. BRAKE FLUID FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER LEAKED ON A WIRING HARNESS AND CAUSED MULTIPLE SYSTEM FAILURES INCLUDING THE ABS SYSTEM, THE CRUISE CONTROL, THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG, AND THE DISPLAY ON THE RADIO. THE SERVICE TECH INDICATED THAT I WAS LUCKY I AVOIDED A FIRE. THIS SEEMS VERY SIMILAR TO THE RECALL ON THE FORD F-150S THAT IS CAUSING MULTIPLE FIRES. *NM PER DIAGNOSTICS FOR THE VERIFICATION OF THE AIRBAG LAMP, THE CAUSE WAS DUE TO THE POWER FUSE OF THE MODULE/OPEN CIRCUIT FROM ABS INTERNAL CIRCUIT DAMAGE. *SC
A HISSING NOISE IS COMING FROM MY BRAKE PEDAL. WHEN I PRESS DOWN ON THE BRAKE IT GOES AWAY BUT WHEN I LET UP ON THE BRAKE IT STARTS MAKING THE HISSING NOISE AGAIN. *JB
MY WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR 8 YEAR OLD TWINS TO A PIANO RECITAL IN MY 2001 FORD ESCAPE, AND, WHILE GOING UP A STEEP HILL ON A FOUR-LANE ROAD, THE ENGINE DOWNSHIFTED AND THE CAR ACCELERATED OUT OF CONTROL. WHEN SHE REALIZED THAT SHE THE CAR WAS SPEEDING FORWARD WHEN SHE WAS NOT PRESSING ON THE ACCELERATOR, SHE APPLIED THE BRAKES HARD, BUT NOTHING HAPPENED. IN AN ATTEMPT TO AVOID THE CARS, SHE TOOK AN OFF-RAMP BUT QUICKLY REALIZED THAT TRAFFIC WAS STOPPED THERE AS WELL. IN DESPERATION, MY WIFE PULLED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. THE CAR THEN STOPPED, BUT THEN LOST SHE LOST EVERYTHING. MY ESCAPE STARTED ROLLING BACKWARDS DOWN THE HILL, EVEN WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ON. AGAIN, THE FOOT BRAKE DIDN'T RESPOND. SHE WAS HEADED BACKWARDS DOWN THE 1/2 MILE, STEEPLY GRADED HILL INTO THE CARS COMING UP THE HILL. SHE TURNED THE WHEEL TO BACK UP THE STEEP EMBANKMENT ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. AFTER BOUNCING BACKWARDS THROUGH THE STEEP DITCH AND TRAVELING ABOUT 14 FEET UP THE EMBANKMENT, THE CAR PAUSED FOR A MOMENT AND THEN SLAMMED FORWARD BACK INTO THE DITCH. OUR CHILDREN WERE NOT HURT. MY WIFE HAS SUFFERED WHIPLASH WHICH IS REQUIRING MEDICATION, PHYSICAL THERAPY, AND GIVES HER CONSTANT PAIN. MY LOCAL FORD DEALER HAS BEEN HONEST THAT A CRUISE CONTROL WIRE WAS FRAYED, AND EVEN THOUGH SHE WAS NOT USING THE CRUISE CONTROL, IT WAS MOVING IN PARALLEL TO THE ACCELERATOR CABLE. THE FRAYED CRUISE CONTROL CABLE STUCK AND CAUSED THE ACCELERATOR TO COMPRESS AND STICK. THEY HAVE NO EXPLANATION FOR THE LOSS OF BRAKES AND THE FAILURE OF THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. HOWEVER, AFTER THE HONEST ASSESSMENT, POOR TREATMENT ENSUED. THE DEALERSHIP IS FIXING THE CABLE, TRANSMISSION, AND BRAKES UNDER OUR EXTENDED WARRANTY AND NOT TAKING OWNERSHIP FOR THE ACCIDENT. THEY HAVE HAD MY CAR FOR 1 MONTH TODAY, AND I STILL DO NOT HAVE IT BACK. I WILL HAVE TO PAY THE $1000 DEDUCTIBLE FOR THE AUTO BODY WORK.
I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF A 2001 FORD ESCAPE XLT V6, 4 WHEEL DRIVE. MY TRUCK CURRENTLY HAS 75000 MILES OF USE. I FEEL THE INCIDENT I CHOSE TO WRITE ABOUT IS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE AS IT INVOLVES A MALFUNCTION OF THE ANIT-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS) WHICH SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCES BRAKING ACTION (ON DRY PAVEMENT!) WHEN IT OCCURS. I AM ALSO AWARE OF AT LEAST TWO OTHER FORD ESCAPE OWNERS THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE. THE FAILURE CAUSES THE ABS TO ACTIVATE ON DRY PAVEMENT, WHEN ABSOLUTELY NO SLIPPAGE IS OCCURRING AT ANY WHEEL. THE ACTIVITY OF THE ABS SYSTEM ACTUALLY SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCES BRAKING CAPACITY AND CAUSES THE BRAKE PEDAL TO GO DOWN NOTICEABLY FURTHER THAN NORMAL WHEN ATTEMPTING TO STOP. ONLY A QUICK AVOIDANCE MANEUVER ALLOWED ME TO AVOID REAR-ENDING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. PUMPING THE BRAKES DOES NOT HELP SINCE THE ABS HYDRAULIC CONTROL MODULE IS MODULATING THE BRAKES AT SUCH A RATE, PUMPING THE BRAKE DOES NOT PRODUCE A FIRMER PEDAL. I HAVE TRACED THE PROBLEM TO A FAULTY ABS SYSTEM ROTATION TRANSDUCER DESIGN ON THE FRONT WHEELS OF THE ESCAPE. THE TRANSDUCER IS BASICALLY A SPLINED RING ABOUT 8MM WIDE. THE RING IS APPARENTLY FRICTION FIT ONTO THE HALF-SHAFT NEAR THE FRONT CV JOINTS JUST INSIDE OF THE FRONT HUB ASSEMBLY. A SENSOR APPARENTLY PICKS UP THE PEAKS OR VALLEYS IN THE SPLINED RING AS IT ROTATES PAST THE SENSOR TO DETERMINE WHEEL ROTATION SPEED. IT IS THE SPLINED RING THAT FAILS, MINE ACTUALLY SPLIT ACROSS ITS WIDTH CAUSING IT TO LOOSEN AND MOVE AWAY FROM THE SENSOR. THIS APPARENTLY CAUSES THE ABS SYSTEM TO OPERATE ERRATICALLY AND ACTUALLY CAUSE A SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN BRAKING CAPACITY ON DRY PAVEMENT! THIS ERRATIC BEHAVIOR WILL OCCUR 5-10 TIMES BEFORE THE ABS CONTROLLER DETERMINES THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG AND SWITCHES OFF THE ABS SYSTEM. THIS ILLUMINATES THE ABS INDICATOR LIGHT ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND DOES RESTORE NORMAL BRAKING PERFORMANCE. THIS CYCLE WILL REPEAT ITSELF EACH TIME THE TRUCK IS SHUT OFF AND RESTARTED!!
HISSING NOISE COMING FROM BRAKES. STOPS WHEN I DEPRESS THE BRAKES AND RETURNS UPON TAKING MY FOOT OFF BRAKES. THIS CANNOT BE GOOD. MECHANICS PRETENDED THAT THEY DID NOT HEAR THIS. MUST BE AN EXPENSIVE FIX BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN STONE WALLED. *JB
THE BRAKES IN MY CAR COMPLETELY FAILED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES, LUCKILY, BECAUSE I WAS ON RARELY USED DIRT ROADS. THE CAR WAS STILL UNDER WARARNTY, SO I RETURNED IT TO THE DEALER, WHO FIXED OR REPLACED A MAJOR HYDRAULIC COMPONENT OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM.
A STRANGE AIR-LEAKING NOISE HAS BEEN COMING OUT OF THE BRAKE AREA OF MY FORD ESCAPE. THE NOISE STARTED OUT SOMEWHAT QUIET, BUT IT HAS GOTTEN LOUDER AND LOUDER. WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED, THE SOUND GETS MUCH QUIETER, ALMOST SILENT, BUT THE HISSING RETURNS WITH A VENGEANCE AS SOON AS I PRESS ON THE ACCELERATOR. THIS STARTED AROUND 46,500 MILES, AND NOW I AM AT 48,000. A REPUTABLE MECHANIC INFORMED ME THAT THE BRAKE VACUUM BOOSTER WAS LEAKING. THIS SEEMS TO BE A MAJOR PROBLEM FOR A CAR THAT IS A 2001 MODEL WITH SUCH LOW MILEAGE. I IMAGINE THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY PERSON WHO WILL BE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS VACUUM BOOSTER PROBLEM. *NM
BRAKE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. HAD CAR INSPECTED, DETERMINED BACK HALF OF MASTER CYLINDER WAS LEAKING CAUSING BRAKE FLUID LEVEL TO DROP AND WARNING LIGHT TO COME ON. MASTER CYLINDER TO BE REPLACED, REAR BRAKES NEED TO BE ADJUSTED AND ENTIRE BRAKE SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE FLUSHED. *JB
FORD ESCAPE 2001, WINDSHIELD WIPERS HAVEN'T KEPT WINDOWS CLEAR ENOUGH TO SEE DURING RAIN OR SNOW. *BF THE CONSUMER WAS ONLY GETTING 10-12 MILES PER GALLON ON THE HIGHWAY. THE VEHICLE WAS HARD TO DRIVE WHEN IT WAS WINDY OUTSIDE. WHEN THE CONSUMER ATTEMPTED TO STOP THE VEHICLE, THE BRAKE WENT DOWN TO THE FLOOR AND DID NOT COME BACK UP FOR SEVERAL SECONDS. THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES DID NOT ENGAGE. THE CONSUMER SPOKE TO THE DEALER AND HE SAID THE BRAKES MUST HAVE FROZEN UP. THE BATTERY LOW LIGHT WAS ON. *JB

THE BREAK FLUID ACTED AS FUEL FOR THE FIRE. THE BREAKING SYSTEM, ALTHOUGH ABLE TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A SAFE STOP, WAS SERIOUSLY AND ADVERSELY AFFECTED. *JB

I'VE NOTICED AN AIR-LEAKING/HISSING NOISE THAT HAS GRADUALLY, OVER A FEW WEEKS, GOTTEN LOUDER. THE NOISE GETS QUIETER WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED, BUT RETURNS AS SOON AS YOU LET UP ON THE BRAKES. I'VE HAD THE NOISE CHECKED OUT AND WAS TOLD THAT THE BRAKE VACUUM BOOSTER WAS LEAKING. THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING TO A 2001 FORD ESCAPE WITH LESS THAN 51,000 MILES ON IT. THE INTERESTING THING IS, MY MOTHER HAS A 2001 MAZDA TRIBUTE, AND SHE JUST HAD THIS EXACT PROBLEM WITH HER CAR. HER MILEAGE, TOO, IS AROUND 50,000. WE FIND IT ODD THAT THE VEHICLES ARE MADE BY THE SAME MANUFACTURER AND BOTH HAVE RELATIVELY LOW MILEAGE FOR THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM. HAVE OTHER DRIVERS HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THESE VEHICLES?

BRAKE PEDAL HISSES AND SQUEAKS WHEN RELEASED. TO STOP HIGH-PITCHED HISSING SOUND, THE PEDAL MUST BE LIGHTLY TAPPED. RESULTS IN EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO BRAKE SYSTEM. BRAKE PADS, ROTORS, AND POWER BRAKE BOOSTER NEED REPLACING. POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE!
THE ROTORS ON MY ESCAPE HAD TO BE REPLACED AT 45,000 MILES. THERE WAS NO INDICATION THAT THE BRAKES HAD WORN DOWN (NO SQUEALER WARNING). UPON INSPECTION IT WAS REVEALED THAT THE ROTORS HAD BEEN WORN DOWN AND HAD TO BE REPLACED ALONG WITH NEW BRAKE PADS. THE SERVICE MANAGER WAS SURPRISED AT THE ROTORS BEING IN SUCH BAD SHAPE ESPECIALLY SINCE IT WAS NOT DUE TO GRINDING (THE BRAKE PADS WEREN'T COMPLETELY WORN OUT). I HAVE A 2001 FORD ESCAPE. ABS SENSORES GOT MUD IN THEM FAILED AND BURNT OUT. I HAVE REPLACED 4 ABS SENSORSE IN 5 MONTH PERIOD. I WAS TOLD BECAUSE OF MUD GETTING IN THEM. DEALER SHIP AND FORD CUSTOMOER SERVICE TELL ME TO WASH SENSORS OFF WHEN EVER I DRIVE THROUGH THE MUD. I LIVE ON A DIRT ROAD. SO I WOULD HALF TO CRAWL UNDER THE CAR AND WASH ALL SENSORSE EVERY DAY. I GET IN MY CAR IN THE MORNING TO TAKE THE KIDS TO THE SCHOOL BUS HALF WAY THERE THE ABS WARNING LIGHT GOES ON. WHEN I GET HOME IF I CRAWL UNDER THE CAR AND WASH OUT SENSORES THE LIGHT WILL GO OFF. THEN LATER IN THE DAY WHEN I GO TO PICK UP THE KIDS THE SAME THING HAPPENS. IF I WASH THE SENSORES EVERYTIME I GO THROUGH THE MUD ABS BREAKS WILL WORK UNTILL I GET MUD IN THEM. IF I DONT WASH MUD OUT OF SENSORES EVENTUALLY THEY WILL BURN OUT. THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE SAID THIS IS NORMAL MAINTANACE. I CANT BELIEVE THEY WOULD CONSIDER THAT NORMAL. I HAVE SPENT MOST OF THE TIME I HAVE OWNED THIS SUV DRIVING IT WITH OUT ABS BREAKS. I THINK THEY SHOULD FIX THIS DESIGN PROBLEM, BEFORE I GET INTO AN ACIDENT WITH OUT THE USE OF MY ABS BRAKES. I'VE ONLY HAD THIS CAR FOR TWO YEARS AND IT DIED TWICE WHILE DRIVING ON THE ROAD. ONE TIME ON OCTOBER 19, 2002 AND ANOTHER TIME ON SEPTEMBER 12, 2003. THIS CAR HAS ALSO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE SENSORS AND PCM MODULE.
ROTORS HAD TO BE REPLACED AT 24,000 MILES ON MY 2001 FORD ESCAPE ON SEPTEMBER 25, 2003. I HAD THE VEHICLE IN FOR A MASTER CYLINDER PROBLEM IN DECEMBER OF 2002 AND THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY COULD FIND ANY LEAKS AND JUST TOPPED THE FLUID AND SENT ME ON MY WAY. I HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED IN MARCH AND ON MARCH 7, 2003 THE DEALERSHIP FINALLY FOUND OUT I HAD A MASTER CYLINDER LEAK AND REPLACED IT UNDER WARRANTY. I BELIEVE THAT THE MASTER CYLINDER PROBLEM MAY HAVE CAUSED THE ROTOR PROBLEM (THE ROTORS WERE SO BAD THEY COULD NOT EVEN BE TURNED.) THE INDEPENDENT SHOP THAT REPLACED THE ROTORS ALSO SAID THE PADS WERE JUST ABOUT METAL TO METAL. I HAD NOT FORWARNING OF THIS PROBLEM. FORD WOULD NOT EVEN REFUND HAVE OF THE CHARGE FOR THE ROTOR PROBLEM OR EVEN LOOK AT THE OLD ROTORS WHICH WERE RETURNED TO ME THE THE SPECS MARKED ON THEM.
BRAKES WORE DOWN PAST TO THE ROTORS. SAFETY ISSUE:THERE ARE NO LOW PAD WEAR (SQUEALER) INDICATORS ON THE BRAKES. ROTORS HAD TO BE REPLACED. THERE WAS NO AUDIBLE SIGN OF PAD WEAR UNLESS INSPECTED VISUALLY. IF I HAD DRIVEN THE CAR ANY LONGER THE HEAT FROM METAL ON METAL WOULD HAVE BLOWN THE FRONT TIRES. *AK

F-150 BARELY STOPS FROM HITTING A CRV IN FRONT OF IT. AS SOON AS I SAW HIM APPLY HIS BRAKES I SLAMMED ON MINE. THE BRAKES DID NOT SEEM TO HELP TO SLOW ESCAPE'S SPEED. WENT UNDER F150'S BUMPER AND WAS BOUNCED BACK AT LEAST A CAR LENGTH AND A HALF (HAVE PICTURES). THE FRONT WAS CRUPPLED AND AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. LEFT REAR PASSENGER RESTRAINT WAS JAMMED AFTER THE FIRST USE. THIS PART WAS REPLACED AND IT WAS JAMMED AFTER THE FIRST USE. IT WAS REPLACED A SECOND TIME AND IS CURRENTLY FUCTIONAL BUT THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IN 4 MONTHS SINCE PURCHASE DATE THAT IT HAS BEEN FUNCTIONAL. REAR DIFFERENTIAL HAD A BROKEN SEAL AND WAS LEAKING. THIS PART WAS REPLACED AND IS NOW FUNCTIONAL. THE MASTER CYLINDER WAS CRACKED AND REPLACED. THIS PART IS NOW FUNCTIONAL. THE POWER STEERING WAS EFFECTED WHEN PART OF THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM FELL OUT OF THE CAR WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS PUT IN PARK. THE PARTS (INCLUDING ALTERNATOR, BELTS AND SPRING) LITERALLY FELL OFF THE CAR. THIS COULD HAVE RESULTED IN MANY FATALITIES AS THE VEHICLE WAS ON THE HIGHWAY ONLY MINUTES PRIOR WITH A CAR FULL OF PASSANGERS. THE RESULTS OF THIS INCIDENT WOULD HAVE BEEN DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT IF THIS HAD HAPPENED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION. FORD HAS NOT BEEN RESPONSIVE TO MY NEEDS AS A CONSUMER AND HAS MINIMIZED THE SAFETY HAZARD POSED BY THIS DEFECTIVE VEHICLE.
