Your brake booster failed, making it much harder to stop your vehicle and nearly causing an accident. There were no warning lights to alert you to the problem, and your mechanic said the booster was barely holding together. The mechanic indicated this type of failure shouldn't happen and recommended reporting it. Fixing this will require replacing the brake booster assembly.

No warning signals-only 67k miles on my car. it happened several times within the last month. I took my car into Hansel Ford in Santa Rosa, CA where I bought my car in 2008. The brake booster needed replacing. It was a matter of life or death! So $1,000 later I had to pay. What? the same brake booster on 2011 edges were being replaced. This is a Ford defect problem. No one should drive a car that the brakes don't stop the car! IT WAS A TERRIFYING INCIDENT, ESPECIALLY SINCE I HAVE A 5 YEAR OLD SON. THE FORD DEALERSHIP CONFIRMED THAT THE BRAKE BOOSTER HAD FAILED. I SEE THAT THIS IS A RECALL ON THE 2010 AND NEWER EDGE, WHICH USES THE SAME PART. I FEEL THAT THIS SHOULD ALSO BE A RECALL IN THE EARLIER MODELS, AS IT IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY IN THE SHOP AWAITING REPAIR, WHICH WILL COST ME IN EXCESS OF $500. I AM NOT PLEASED.

IT'S FUNCTION IS COMPROMISED. WHEN IT HAPPENED YESTERDAY, IT CAUSED COUPLE OF VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. I ALMOST HIT TWO CARS IN FRONT AND OVER RUN A TRAFFIC LIGHT BECAUSE THE CAR CANNOT FULLY STOP FULLY. I DROVE THIS CAR TO THE DEALER THIS MORNING. IT WAS BRAKE BOOSTER PROBLEM ACCORDING TO THE TECH SERVICE. HE DROVE THE CAR AND FELT EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE THE CAR BECAUSE OF THE COMPROMISED BRAKE FUNCTION. HOWEVER DUE TO HIS TIGHT SCHEDULE, HE CANNOT FIT MY CAR INTO HIS REPAIR SERVICE. FORD ISSUE A RECALL 13N02 IN 2016 FOR BRAKE BOOSTER PROBLEM. HOWEVER IT ONLY COVERS CARS 2010-2013. THERE ARE PLENTY OF COMPLAINTS ONLINE REGARDING THE SAME PROBLEM FOR CARS MADE IN OTHER YEARS. IT IS A SYSTEMATIC PROBLEM THAT RELATES TO THE DESIGN OTHER THAN MANUFACTURING PROCESS RELATED TO BATCHES. A SYSTEMATIC RECALL SHOULD BE DONE BEFORE ANY CUSTOMER GETS INTO A FATAL SITUATION.

THE REPLACEMENT PART FOR EITHER IS THE EXACT SAME, AS I VERIFIED WITH NUMEROUS SUPPLIERS. THE RECALL NEEDS TO BE EXPANDED TO COVER MORE YEARS, AS MY WIFE NOW DRIVES AN UNSAFE VEHICLE. FORD REDESIGNED THE EDGE FOR THE 2010 MODEL YEAR BUT USED THE EXACT SAME, NOW RECALLED COMPONENT. BRAKING IS DIFFICULT AT ALL SPEEDS, MUCH HARDER THAN THE DAYS BEFORE POWER BRAKES.

I ALSO DID NOT REALIZE THAT I COULD REGISTER A COMPLAINT VIA NHTSA UNTIL RECENTLY OR I WOULD HAVE SUBMITTED THIS COMPLAINT WHEN THE BRAKE POWER BOOSTER REQUIRED REPLACEMENT. BUT AGAIN, LIKE THE TRANSMISSION ISSUES (NHTSA #10874656), IT SEEMS LIKE THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM THAT AFFECTS FORD EDGES TO AN INORDINATE DEGREE AND SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED BY NHTSA AS A POTENTIAL RECALL. WHEN I DESCRIBED THE PROBLEM TO THE MAINTENANCE MANAGER AND THE MECHANIC, BOTH STATED THAT IT WAS PROBLEM DUE TO RUST ON THE ROTORS. THE MECHANIC REMOVED THE WHEELS AND SHOWED ME THE ROTORS THAT WERE COMPLETELY RUSTED. HE THEN REMOVED THE ROTORS AND SHOWED ME ONE THAT HAD A PIECE ABOUT THE SIZE OF A DIME THAT HAD PHYSICALLY RUSTED AWAY FROM THE ROTOR. I ASKED HOW THAT HAD HAPPENED AS I KEEP MY CAR IN THE GARAGE AND HAD VERY LITTLE MILEAGE ON IT. HE STATED THAT THE CAR HAD PROBABLY SAT IN THE LOT FOR 6 MONTHS PRIOR TO MY PURCHASE. I COMPLAINED TO THE MANAGERS AT THE DEALER AND ALSO WROTE A LETTER TO FORD ABOUT THIS SUBJECT. ALTHOUGH ALL OF THESE PERSONS ADMIT IT IS DUE TO RUST, THEY WOULD NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DAMAGE. SINCE AUTOMOBILES WERE BEING SOLD AT A SLOW PACE WHEN I PURCHASED THE CAR, THIS PROBLEM MUST EXIST ON OTHERS. MAYBE YOU SHOULD LOOK INTO THE PROBLEM. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 FORD EDGE LIMITED. THE CONTACT WAS REVERSING FROM A RESIDENTIAL DRIVEWAY WHEN SHE DISCOVERED THAT IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE, THE BRAKES WOULD HAVE TO BE APPLIED ABRUPTLY. LATER, WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE BRAKES WHERE ENGAGED AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP AND THE VEHICLE PROCEEDED THROUGH A RED TRAFFIC LIGHT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE SHE WAS ADVISED THAT THE BRAKE BOOSTER WOULD NEED REPLACING. THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING REPAIRS. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 36,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 37,200.

THE BRAKES FELT AS IF THERE IS AIR IN THE LINES. THE PEDAL WOULD START TO BRAKE AS NORMAL, BUT THEN MOVE SLIGHT FORWARD AS IF AIR IN THE LINES. THIS GIVES YOU A FEELING OF PUSHING HARDER. WE HAD TAKEN TO THE DEALER MORE THAN 3 TIMES. THE LAST TIME THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR A WEEK OR SO. NO PROBLEM WAS FOUND. FORD HEADQUARTERS COULD NOT FIND A REASON TO THE ISSUE. SITTING AT RED LIGHT , FOOT ON BRAKE, MY 2009 FORD EDGE WITH LESS THAN 9000 MILES ACCELERATES ON ITS OWN SENDING ME INTO THE CAR IN FRONT, HER INTO THE INTERSECTION AVOID HER I TURN, MY CAR WILL NOT STOP I PUT IT PARK, STILL WILL NOT STOP, PUT ON EMERGENCY BRAKE, FINALLY STOPS. MUCH TRAUMA ENSUES INCLUDING OTHER DRIVER GOING TO HOSPITAL, PHYSICAL PAIN AND ANXIETY ON MY PART ,ANSWERING POLICE QUESTIONS, ETC. I STILL HAVE NO CAR AS I WILL NOT DRIVE THAT DEATH TRAP AND IT STILL SITS AT THE DEALERSHIP. THEY HAVE NOT BEEN MUCH HELP. I AM HAVING TO FIGHT FORD MOTOR CO. AND THAT IS A NIGHTMARE. THEY HAVE JERKED ME AROUND, DELAYED THEIR RESPONSES AND I GUESS WISH I WOULD GO AWAY. I HAVE DONE RESEARCH AND NOW KNOW THAT THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED. I T IS CALLED UNINTENDED ACCELERATION AND THEY KNOW IT IS REAL ! I AM NOW WORKING WITH AN ATTORNEY BUT IT NEVER SHOULD HAVE COME TO THIS.
