Owner Complaints (52)
Your engine suddenly shut down without warning while driving on the highway, forcing you to coast to the shoulder through a construction zone. The dealer diagnosed the problem as a seized engine, even though the vehicle had passed Chevrolet's diagnostic test for the 6.2L engine recall about 7,000 miles earlier and was properly maintained. Repairing a seized engine typically requires complete engine replacement or a full engine rebuild.

After your Tahoe was serviced for an engine recall and the dealership switched to higher viscosity oil, your engine subsequently failed. The dealership is disputing whether the oil change is connected to the engine failure. Resolving this will likely require diagnostic testing to determine the cause of the engine failure and whether the thicker oil contributed to the problem.

Your check engine light came on and the car displayed warnings about the collision avoidance system and ESC (stability control) needing service. The vehicle then began shutting down with a "proceed with caution" message, reduced acceleration, and disabled safety features. You noticed a strong gas smell and the fuel gauge dropping rapidly, indicating a serious fuel system problem. After multiple shop visits where technicians found "nothing wrong," a part costing over $1,000 was eventually replaced, but you believe the engine was damaged by the underlying issue. The fix will likely require fuel system component replacement and possibly engine diagnostics to assess any damage.

While driving your Tahoe at 50-60 MPH, multiple warning lights came on and the vehicle wouldn't restart. The dealer found that engine valves had collapsed and the camshaft may be damaged. The dealer believes this issue warrants a recall and recommended further diagnostics, but your vehicle hasn't been repaired yet.

Your Tahoe suddenly died while driving on a busy bridge during rush hour traffic in Moore, Oklahoma, leaving you stranded and resulting in a traffic ticket. The vehicle had to be towed and remains in the shop with no clear repair timeline. You're requesting that GM arrange a rental car of equal value to your Tahoe through Hertz, given incoming bad weather.

While driving at highway speed, your check engine light came on with a message about reduced acceleration and safe driving mode, and your vehicle slowed down to 45 MPH and wouldn't speed back up properly. Your brake lights also stopped working, the engine fan was running very loudly, and you noticed a burning smell after turning off the engine. A diagnostic scan found a trouble code related to the coolant control valve assembly. After the code was cleared at an auto parts store, the check engine light remained on even after restarting. The fix will likely involve diagnosing and repairing or replacing the coolant control valve assembly and addressing any related engine or electrical issues.

Driving my Tahoe (67,000 miles) down the highway and everything is perfectly fine, suddenly all of the check engine lights began to flash. I wasn’t sure if it was an electrical glitch or not until the engine started knocking loudly. I was on a bridge in traffic and had no where to safely pull over. I had to drive a few miles further just to get to safety at which point the knocking became extremely loud and the entire car began shaking. I had the vehicle towed to the dealership where they informed me the lifters had gone out as well as the cam shaft. Apparently this is a very common occurrence among owners of this vehicle/similar vehicle. I am so grateful this is the one time my two small babies were not with me. It was a very scary situation and I was hours from home. This came completely out of no where without warning. Of course this happened 7,000 miles out of warranty. So now after paying over $70,000 for a vehicle that is barely 3 years old and only driven in town for the majority of that, I was stranded and now going to be out $10,000 to repair.
While driving from Boise, Idaho to Jackson, Wyoming our 2022 Tahoe 6.2L with 70K miles shut down at 85MPH on Highway 84 outside of Pocatello. Luckily, my wife was able to coast off the exit. We had the Tahoe towed to the Dealer and advised it would be 4 months for a new engine as our order was number 4,000 in line for an engine. Luckily, all of a sudden engines arrived from the supplier and was replaced in 3-4 weeks. Tariffs must have sped up the process. Downside, I paid 50% as we were out of warranty and GM would not cover the entire cost. Now I see the recall and would expect to be re-imbursed. We will see.
At 22,000 miles on the Interstate highway, vehicle suddenly lost all power, no throttle, went into neutral and we were lucky to be able pull it off to the shoulder without an accident. It had stalled and after multiple tries we were able to restart it. Then the check engine light came on and we drove it directly to dealer. There was a code for camshaft sensor and we were told all lifters needed to be replaced. Upon doing so, they found metal pieces in the engine and said entire engine needed to be replaced. The engine was on back order for up to several months. We waited a month then decided to trade due to loss of vehicle use. Dealer was very helpful during repair but no assistance from GM for a known issue on the 6.2L that could have had a negative outcome on the highway. This was not only a safety issue but a very expensive situation to trade out of for an almost new car.
The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, there was an abnormal knocking sound coming from the engine compartment. Upon acceleration, the RPMs rose significantly, and the vehicle hesitated while accelerating. Additionally, after coming to a complete stop, the contact attempted to accelerate however, the vehicle hesitated with the message "Low Oil - Add Oil" displayed. There was no warning light illuminated. The local dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed, and the contact was advised that the failure was likely related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V274000 (Engine). The part needed for the recall repair was not yet available. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
At 30,534 miles, and still under warranty (5.3L V8) I had a complete engine failure without warning. Catastrophic and immediate engine failure. Latest word was a cam and lifter problem on a vehicle still under warranty. Repair time stated at 1-3 months. Engine failure occurred on a business trip en route to Dallas, TX in rural Oklahoma. Paid $275 for towining, $115 for a hotel and $360 for a rental car. Zero compensation.
On 2/27/25, I was driving down the highway and the dash stated "push start for engine" and began to lose all power. The engine seized with no other warning. I was able to safely pull over to the side of road and was then towed to the shop. This vehicle has been serviced on a regular basis. It was found that the engine had blown and am still waiting for a replacement.
3 Separate Major Problems: 03/23 - 8500 miles. Driving at 70mph on highway, received message on drivers display "Conditions Not Correct For Shift", car went into Neutral, no acceleration possible. Was able to safely get off highway. Stopped car, and restarted, error went away and car was able to be driven further without incident. Chose to not take in for service, 4/23 - 9000 miles. Noticed fluttering noise coming from engine bay when lifting off gas after acceleration. Service eventually found lifter/bearing issue. Whole engine was replaced under warranty. Was without car for 3 months. Further research online found that others experienced the same issue while driving and had engine failure at speed resulting in life threatening driving conditions. 4/25 - 31000 miles. Last weekend, driving at highway speeds and came to traffic standstill in left lane on major highway. Went to accelerate, and received "Conditions Not Correct for Shift" message, car went into Neutral and would not accelerate. Turned car off, and tried to restart and car was stuck in Park. No way to access Neutral, leading to blocking of left lane where cars were approaching and avoiding us at highway speeds. OnStar was notified immediately with the severity of danger stressed (2 adults, 2 children and dog remained buckled in the vehicle). However, CHP took over 1 hour to arrive, shut down highway and somehow was able to start the car one time and get into Neutral for CHP to push car safely to shoulder. Dealership alerted me to failed "Fuel Control Module" To have to 3 major engine related incidents that could have lead to accident or death is unacceptable. Online research shows these issues have been common for this vehicle engine and is absolutely unacceptable. For a driver to not be able to safely engage a Neutral override is absolutely unacceptable. I was informed by the tow truck driver that a special tool was needed and you had to crawl under the vehicle to engage neutral override.
Driving the Tahoe to work. All sudden motor started cutting out and died. Vehicle was towed to Chevy dealer. Was notified by them engine was locked up and needed to be replaced. 6.2 Motor
While driving on the highway the engine started to makes noise and shut down in seconds without warning- we glided down an off-ramp narrowly avoiding oncoming traffic and was towed away on the ramp - the engine only has 68,000 miles and it well maintained. It’s my understanding that the NHTSA is investigating problems with the 6.2 L engines on 2022 Tahoes that have sudden lost of power please add my name to the investigation- GM has refused to help I’m hoping that a recall which is warranted will help with the $11,869 cost to replace the engine.
Vehicle suddenly lost power at 70mph in heavy traffic. This was after a very brief flash of the electrical system off and then back on. Vehicle was safely pulled to the side of the road (luckily). The electrical system kept demanding to “push start” and then would shut off and then immediately come back on, but without the engine starting. The vehicle would not completely turn off, or turn back on from that point forward, killing the battery in the process. We called Onstar, who had it towed to Bill Estes Chevrolet in Carmel Indiana. Mark in the service department then informed us that the engine was completely seized up and would require an engine replacement.
The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated while driving 75 MPH, the vehicle shut off with the check engine warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact pulled over to the shoulder of the highway, and the vehicle was later towed to a dealer. The dealer discovered that the lifter bearing had failed, which resulted in engine failure. The contact was provided with an estimate for a new engine. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was filed. The manufacturer agreed to cover half the cost of a new engine. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The failure mileage was 84,528.
The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that while his wife was driving 35 MPH, the vehicle stalled and failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer who diagnosed that the rod bearings had failed, causing the engine to seize. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 66,523.
The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated while driving approximately 70 MPH, the vehicle lost automotive power. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer and was diagnosed with an internal bearing failure, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.
I’ve done some research on the Chevy Tahoe 6.2L engine failures my Tahoe experienced the same thing our Tahoe just shut off in the middle of rush hour. 2 days ago we’ve started hearing slight knocking on higher RPMs and sometimes just idling and also would have a rough idle but it would go away with no check engine lights or warnings on the dash till today we haven’t taken it to the dealership to look at do to it having 61k miles just past its warranty and us not having the finances to get the truck fixed.
Without warning engine light turned on and vehicle imminently lost power. Engine locked up and could not be started again this happened January 14 2025 motor was blown. Taken into the dealer at this time. Tahoe was picked up from dealer on 3/1/2025 Tahoe was driven 36 miles and once again out of no where engine light turned on and vehicle lost all power and would not start again, engine was blown a second time. Vehicle is now at the dealer for a second time.
Engine stopped working while on the freeway going 60 mph. Unable to start vehicle once it died.
ENGINE QUIT RUNNING UNEXPECTEDLY, WITHOUT WARNING, AS WE WERE DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY ABOUT 30 MINUTES FROM OUR HOME. FORTUNATELY, WE WERE ABLE TO GET OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD BUT FACED DIFFICULTY IN GETTING THE VEHICLE ON THE TOW TRUCK. NO POWER SO ELECTRONIC PARKING BRAKE WOULD NOT DISENGAGE FOR MORE THAN A FEW SECONDS. PLUS THE REAR WHEELS WOULD NOT TURN AT ALL. WE DID GET FINALLY GET THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A NEARBY MECHANIC WHO INFORMED US THAT THE ENGINE HAD SIEZED AND WOULD HAVE TO BE COMPLETELY REPLACED WITH A BRAND NEW ENGINE. SUSPECTED MAIN BEARING FAILURE. I HAVE READ THAT YOU ARE INVESTIGATING PROBLEMS WITH THIS ENGINE, GM L87 6.2L V8. SINCE OUR VEHICLE HAS 75000 MILES AND IS OUT OF WARRANTY WE ARE FACING REPAIR CHARGES OF UP TO $15000 TO $20000. WE COULD USE A LITTLE JUSTICE. THANK YOU.
The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH with her child in a car seat in the rear seat, a message advising her to press the Push to Start button was displayed. The vehicle then shifted to neutral(N) unintendedly and stalled, and a semi-truck nearly crashed into the vehicle. The contact was unable to pull to the side of the road completely. The contact exited the vehicle and took the baby out of the vehicle. A Police Officer assisted the contact by blocking the road to prevent a crash. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with catastrophic engine failure; however, the part to do the repair was on backorder. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was filed. The manufacturer informed the contact that the dealer would be contacted, and she would be informed of the assistance the manufacturer would provide. The failure mileage was approximately 36,000.
[XXX]. We dropped our vehicle off at Chevrolet on old Seward after our engine seized while on the highway. We had to exit the highway with our five children inside. We had it towed to Chevrolet for them to fix in which the car was finally ready for pick up [XXX]. Not to mention when GM sent the tow truck, it couldn’t even tow our vehicle. They had to order another tow truck because the manual override for the parking break wouldn’t release so I had to sit in the feeezing cold WITH MY KIDS for over an hour. #3 MAIN CAP SEIZED CAUSING ENGINE TO NOT TURN OVER AND ROD SEIZED AS WELL. The issue required a complete engine replacement. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Motor Locked up under 30,000 Miles 6.2 Engine.. March 4th will be a month waiting on a new engine this doesn’t include holidays or weekends and still no sight of a new motor. Driving the highway and vehicle went into basically a limp mode and wouldn’t go anywhere.. Pulled off the side of the highway and turned vehicle off and wouldn’t turn back on
Driving on interstate (I55 - traveling South bound, Bridge over water) traveling at 70 MPH engine started to make loud noise and car was shuttering. We were able to take the immediate next exit. After taking the exit, within minute or two, the car/engine shut off with no way of restarting or steering. The engine did start to smoke when the hood was popped to inspect. Tow truck was called to transport us to the local Chevy dealer in Hammond LA - Ross Downing Chevrolet. Since it was a Saturday, we had to wait for the dealership to reopen on Monday. On Monday, I was called and told that there was indeed complete engine failure, and later in the day it was determined that it was due to a rod bearing issue. GM was contacted since I was 3,000 miles outside of my warranty, and the agreed to cover roughly $17,000 of the repair to completely replace the engine. I was out of pocket $3,227.56. All oil changes and maintenance were on time and kept up with. Just had an oil change roughly a week earlier before the engine failure. There were no lights that came on the dashboard even after the vehicle completely failed.
The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with camshaft and lifter failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 98,000.
While driving under normal conditions, the 6.2L engine in our 2022 Chevy Tahoe seized and stopped running. We were lucky that it was early in the morning and without a lot of traffic and were able to coast the vehicle safely off of the road. Upon inspection from the dealership, they indicated that the engine experienced catastrophic failure. The dealership replaced the engine, Battery, Starter, Fuse box, and steering gear. We were lucky as the failure occurred just prior to us getting onto the interstate. Prior to the failure, there were no warning lights or issues with the vehicle. It was a sudden and catastrophic failure.
Exhaust system failure. Was told by manufacturer vehicle dealer service center that cause of the failure was not from normal use or misuse but due to manufacturing and weak metal/poor materials. No warning lights or messages ever appeared on vehicle information system. First report of exhaust smell in vehicle cabin on 4/9/24 at 38,874 miles. Vehicle dealer service center tested for leaks and found no leak. Second report of exhaust smell in vehicle cabin on 8/6/24 at 48,106 miles. Vehicle dealer service center tested for leaks and found no leak. Third report on exhaust smell in cabin on 10/31/24 to service manager who confirmed he could smell the exhaust in vehicle cabin. Car went to shop on 11/5/24 at 55,077 miles. Two exhaust leaks detected. From dealer: "Smoke tested exhaust system and checked for leaks, found a hole in the exhuast pipe right before the muffler and is likely the source of the smell." Additionally from dealer, after first repair: "After exhaust repair the vehicle was started and heard and audible exhaust leak on the drivers side. After further inspection found the drivers side exhaust manifold is leaking as well." I have been driving this vehicle for at least seven months with exhaust leaks and with exhaust coming into the cabin of my vehicle exposing myself and passengers to carbon monoxide. Reported twice to dealer and they reported no issues.
Check engine light came on due to a P1098 and I received a reduced acceleration advisory. This greatly diminished the performance of the vehicle and made it a hazard to continue on the highway
Our family of 5 (including 2 children and an infant) was driving 70 mph westbound on Interstate 40 east of Knoxville, TN when our 2022 Tahoe RST engine seized. For a few seconds, we had no steering, braking or acceleration and the dashboard began flashing. After a few seconds, the car shifted itself into the neural gear and we were able to brake on the shoulder of a busy highway. We were unable to restart the car. We called the police as well as AAA. The police came and sat behind us to deter oncoming cars to changes lanes. AAA came and towed our car to Reeder Chevrolet dealership in Knoxville, TN. There, it was determined that our engine had seized and needs to be replaced under warranty However, there is a backorder on the engine, and we are now driving a rental car. There are several other Tahoes in their service department with similar circumstances in need of a 6.2L ecotech V8 engine. There was no warning at all that the car had problems. Up until this point, there were no issues. I believe there is a widespread problem with these particular engines and this should be addressed on a national level. Our lives were at risk.
Lifters ticking Fuel Injector misfires
Driving on highway and car started making a loud noise and it completely stopped, had to tow to the dealer.
vehicle has 5500 miles on it, bought new in July 2022, driving on the interstate at night, vehicle shut down without warning, no warning light or check engine lights came on. Had to have it towed to the dealership and they said it had complete engine failure and have to replace the engine. Barley got it off the interstate, lucky no one was hurt.
The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer and the contact informed that the system was being updated and was interrupted while attempting to start-up. While driving approximately 25-30 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The message “No Key Detected” was displayed. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the same dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the failure was due to the gateway serial data module. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was contacted but no additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 4,984. The VIN was not available.
Will coming to a stop the vehicle would just stall. Didn’t notice the dash saying to restart and as let off of break the truck started to roll backwards almost hit car behind me. Did this about 7 more times. Made appointment with dealership and they told me there was no problem found.
While driving, I heard a ticking noise, that sounded like rocks being thrown in the fender well. The more I drove, the sound and frequency increased. Then, I started to lose power, like it was taking longer to shift. My safety and others were at risk because continuing to drive with lifter issues could’ve caused engine failure, which could’ve caused an accident. The problem was confirmed at a dealership. I don’t know if anyone else inspected it. No lights appeared until after I had it towed to the dealership. They said the warning lights came on for them.
