AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2010-2011 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver frontal air bag, the air bag inflator may explode due to being overpressurized.

Fix: GM has notified owners, and dealers will replace the front driver air bag module, free of charge. The recall began February 25, 2019. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-522-9559. GM's number for this recall is N182206630.

Your passenger side curtain airbags deployed unexpectedly while you were driving on the highway, even though there was no collision or reason for them to activate. The sudden deployment startled you, but fortunately didn't cause an accident. The airbag system may need diagnostic testing to identify why it deployed incorrectly.

ON MARCH 1, 2017 AT 28981 MILES, THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON, (NOT THE FIRST TIME). THE NEXT DAY, THE STABILITY CONTROL AND THE ABS LIGHTS BOTH ALSO CAME ON. IN BOTH OCCASIONS THE CAR WAS MOVING AT ABOUT 40 MPH ON A CITY STREET. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THEY CHARGED ME $153 TO GET A DIAGNOSIS.THEY WANTED ANOTHER $850 TO HAVE IT FIXED. I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER SHOP THAT DID IT FOR $190. THESE WERE 2 SEPARATE PROBLEMS, ONE WAS THE AIRBAG LIGHT (A CONNECTION UNDER THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT), AND THE OTHER WAS A SENSOR IN THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL (THE STABILITY/ABS LIGHT).

AFTER FURTHER INVESTING, GM NEVER ISSUE AN ACTUAL RECALL FOR THE 2010 CHEVY MALIBU. INSTEAD THEY CREATED A "MALIBU SAFETY PROGRAM" THAT ONLY INCLUDES 2010 CHEVY MALIBU ENDING IN THE VIN NUMBERS OF: A4100001 A4166698 AF100056 AND AF271265. MY VIN NUMBER ISN'T INCLUDED IN THIS LIST. THEREFORE I HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET. FOR AN ISSUE THAT IS OUT OF MY CONTROL.

THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FOR YOU AT NO CHARGE." I CONTACTED THE DEALER AT MESSER CHEVY IN LUBBOCK, TX, AND ALSO CUSTOMER SERVICE AT CHEVY. I OPENED UP CASE #8-2314213550 ON 8/19/16, AND I WAS TOLD TO GET A DIAGNOSTICS DONE AT THE DEALER, WHICH I DID. I THEN FOUND OUT THE CASE HAD BEEN ARBITRARILY CLOSED THE SAME DAY IT WAS OPENED! NOW CHEVROLET STATES THAT THE CASE WAS REOPENED ON 9/7/16. I JUST WANT THE PROBLEM FIXED FREE OF CHARGE SINCE THE PREVIOUS OWNER SHOULD HAVE TAKEN CARE OF THIS WHEN CHEVY WAS OFFERING THE "SOFT RECALL" REPAIR AT NO CHARGE. CHEVY CALLED IT A CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM AT THE TIME TO AVOID AN AIRBAG RECALL MEDIA HYPE. I ASSUME THIS ISN'T RELATED TO ANY TAKATA AIRBAG PROBLEM, BUT IT IS A POTENTIAL SAFETY HAZARD! I AM GETTING THE RUNAROUND FROM BOTH CHEVROLET AND THE DEALER, AND I JUST THE PROBLEM RESOLVED. THE DEALER TURNED OFF THE WARNING LIGHT, BUT NO REPAIRS HAVE BEEN DONE TO DATE!

CALLED GM STATED WHAT HAPPEN AND I KNEW THEY HAD A RECALL BUT OF COURSE MY CARS VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. BROUGHT THE CAR TO A LOCAL GM DEALER SHIP TO PUT ON MACHINE TO SEE IF ANY CODES WOULD SHOW UP NOTHING CAME UP!!! I WAS TOLD THE MESSAGE WOULD HAVE TO BE SHOWING TO SERVICE VEHICLE. WELL HERE WE ARE A YEAR LATER WITH THE CAR IN THE SHOP BECAUSE MY CAR REDUCES ENGINE POWER WITHOUT WARNING STALLS AND MY ESC SERVICE TRACTION REDUCE ENGINE POWER CAME ON MESSAGE BOARD BUT DID NOT STAY AFTER I TURNED KEY OF COURSE BECAUSE IT SHUT THE CAR OFF AFTER 2-5 MINUTES. THE AIR BAG SERVICE MESSAGE APPEARED IN THE DRIVER INFORMATION CENTER AND THE AIR BAG SERVICE LIGHT CAME ON. IT WENT BACK OFF BEFORE I COULD GET IT TO THE DEALER. NEVERTHELESS I TOOK IT IN TO SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT SUGGESTED I KEEP DRIVING IT TO SEE IF THE LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND STAY ON SO THAT THEY COULD GET A CODE TO DIAGNOSE. I ASKED ABOUT THE PREVIOUS RECALL TO SEE IF THE MANUFACTURER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ANY DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIRS SINCE IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THEY DID NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THIS HAS BEEN A HISTORICAL PROBLEM FOR THIS MODEL AND THAT THERE ARE STILL ISSUES WITH THE AIR BAGS ON THIS MODEL. NOW THAT THE CAR IS NO LONGER UNDER THERE BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY CHANCES ARE THAT THEY WILL CHARGE ME TO REPAIR THE SAME PROBLEM. SO I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM ONLINE AND IT SEEMS THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH A 2010 MALIBU THAT HAS THIS PROBLEM. TO ME THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT CHEVY SHOULD RECALL BUT WONT. ITS SAD THAT THE CAR ONLY HAS 18,000 MILES AT THIS TIME AND I HAVE TO TAKE THE CAR BACK FOR THE SAME SAFETY ISSUE AND PAY TO HAVE IT REPAIRED. ALL MODELS, BELT BAG IN THE HISTORY OF THE AIRBAGS GAS DESIGN, THE FIRST SET OF GASES USED ON THE PUBLIC WERE ALL THE WORST IN 50 DESIGN COULD FIND, AND THAT'S HOW UTAH SUPPORTED HAZ WHOOPER. THESE WERE MOSTLY OXYGEN DEPROVANT GASES, THIS SET OF GASES HAD BEEN FOUND TO BE FLAMMABLE. PREVIOUSLY KNOWN AS "MUST STAY CONTAINED DURING USE" AND "MUST STAY CONTAINED UNTIL DISPOSED OF PROPERLY". THEY LOST THIS CASE UNDER FEDERAL RULING THAT SUPPORTED ONCE DELIVERED THE GAS BECOMES THAT BUSINESS' PROPRIETARY. THESE HAVE A UNIQUE GAS MIXTURE TO MORTON INTERNATIONAL AND AUTOLIV. WHEN THE EMPLOYEES LOST THEIR HAZARDOUS EXPOSURE CASE TO REMOVE THE AVAILABILITY OF HAZ WHOOPING GAS FROM 49 OTHER PRODUCTION STATES, THEY WENT TO A NEW SET OF GASES. THOSE THAT WERE ALLOWED TO RELEASE DURING USE SUCH AS: WELD GAS (ARGON) "DESIGNATED RELEASE ON PUBLIC WHILE IN USE" HELIUM (SAFE ENOUGH FOR USE IN A CHILD'S TOY) THESE WERE ALSO EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE. WHAT HAZ NEVER BEEN PROVIDED BY THIS COUNTRY IS THE CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF WHAT THESE "MIX" GASES WILL DO THAT MAKE THEM PROPRIETARY TO AUTOLIV & MORTON INTERNATIONAL. CHEMICAL REACTION NEEDS TO BE DETERMINED ON THE "MIX" GAS CONCERNING SPONTANEITY OF THE GAS IN UNPRECIDTABLE DEPLOYMENT. TV JUST ADVERTISED THIS BELT BAG. IT TAKES MUCH LESS GAS ON AN INFANT NO MATTER WHERE YOU PUT THEM IN THE VEHICLE. THE MORE "MIX" CYLINDERS YOU ALLOW IN THE VEHICLE THE WORSE THIS SITUATION IS GETTING. FLAMMABILITY IS THE LEAST OF OUR WORRIES AS THE PLANT DECLARED IT A "KNOCK OUT" GAS, FEELS LIKE A NERVE GAS, ETC. SOME WERE FIRED IN 1995 DESCRIBING IT AS SARIN GAS, QUALIFYING IT AS A BIO-EXPLOSIVE BUILT EXTERNAL TO DEFENSE (WHERE THE FIRST ARTICLE TESTING IS THAT PREVENTS PURCHASE OF THIS COMPONENT IN THE MILITARY). THESE CYLINDERS ALSO HAVE A KNOWN LEAK RATE OF 100%. MY AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY WHEN A HIT A DEER HEAD-ON AT 50 MPH'S BECAUSE THE AIRBAG WIRE WAS SEVERED BY THE CRACKED PLASTIC AIR INTAKE COVER ON THE ENGINE DURING THE ACCIDENT. I FORTUNATELY WAS FINE DUE TO HAVING MY SEATBELT ON, BUT I WAS CURIOUS WHY THE AIRBAG DID NOT WORK DEPLOY AT THE SPEED I WAS GOING WHEN THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED.
