FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
TI AUTOMOTIVE IS RECALLING CERTAIN FUEL PUMPS, PART NUMBERS TU456 AND TU303, SOLD UNDER VARIOUS BRAND NAMES AS AFTERMARKET AND REPLACEMENT EQUIPMENT FOR THE MOTOR VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. THE DEFECTIVE FUEL PUMP MAY SEIZE, STOPPING THE FUEL FLOW TO THE ENGINE CREATING A STALLING CONDITION.
Fix: TI AUTOMOTIVE WILL NOTIFY OWNERS OF RECORD AND WILL REPLACE ANY DEFECTIVE FUEL PUMP WITH A NEW OR REWORKED FUEL PUMP FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 22, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TI AUTOMOTIVE AT 1-866-867-3759 OR LOG ON TO WWW.RECALLRESPONSE.COM.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET MALIBU. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE WORKING ON THE VEHICLE IT WAS NOTICED THAT THE FUEL TANK STRAP RUSTED AND DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE LOCAL DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED HOWEVER, NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 123,709.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 CHEVROLET MALIBU CLASSIC. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR FLASHED AND THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE STARTED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS DEFECTIVE. THE FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 36,000.
STARTING AROUND TWO YEARS AGO, FUEL GAUGE AFTER FILLING TANK AND THEN STARTING CAR WOULD FALL TO EMPTY ALONG WITH LOW FUEL LIGHT COMING ON. WHEN RESTART CAR WAS OKAY. SO, DID NOT FILL TANK ANYMORE, ALLEVIATED PROBLEM FOR A YEAR. IN PAST YEAR GOT WORST, AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON UNTIL USING UP UNTIL AT LEAST 2 GALLONS WAS USED WHEN GASOLINE WAS ADDED. THEN ENGINE LIGHT WENT OFF. AS TIME WENT ON, FUEL GAUGE ACTING UP MORE, NEVER READING ACCURATELY HOW MUCH GAS IS IN CAR. IN LAST MONTH, NO MATTER HOW MUCH OR LITTLE FUEL IS ADDED, READS FULL FOR A LONG TIME, THEN GAUGE DROPS SUDDENLY TO EMPTY AND LOW FUEL LIGHT COMES ON, AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. HAD CHECKED, INDICATES THE FUEL SENSOR IS ENTIRELY NOT WORKING NOW /OR FUEL PUMP MAY NOT WORK SOON. SO EVERY 100 MILES, GUESS HOW MUCH FUEL TO ADD. NOT KNOWING, COULD RUN OUT OF GAS ANYTIME, AND CAR SHUT DOWN. COULD NOT LIVE WITH CONDITION ANYMORE. SO, HAVE THE COMBINED FUEL SENOR/FUEL PUMP REPLACED. MY OPINION, THIS SAFETY ISSUES SHOULD RESULT IN GENERAL MOTORS ISSUING A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM, AND REIMBURSING ANY OWNER WITH SAME PROBLEM; SHOULD THEY HAD THE PROBLEM REPAIRED PREVIOUSLY.
THESE ARE THE PHOTOS TAKE OF THE FUEL PUMP AFTER IT WAS REMOVED BY MATHIS AUTO SERVICE (SEE THE ATTACHED INVOICE). AS YOU CAN SEE THE TAG HAS ONLY A SMALL PART OF A BAR CODE, I DIDN'T KNOW WHETHER OR NOT THIS WAS THE PART NUMBER OR NOT, BUT IT SEEM THERE WAS NO NUMBER. THE TOP OF THE PUMP WAS VERY DIRTY AND WET FROM GASOLINE. I HAD THE FUEL PUMP REPLACE AFTER I WAS TRANSPORTING A CLIENT AND THE CAR STARTED SPUTTERING AND LOST POWER FROM 45-MILES-PER HOUR TO ABOUT 10-MILES PER HOUR, BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO TURN INTO A PARKING LOT. THIS SCARED THE CLIENT AND LEAD THEM TO REPORT TO LYFT ABOUT THE INCIDENT. I ALSO REPORTED THE ISSUE TO LYFT RIDE SHARE AND THEY SHUT DOWN MY VEHICLE FOR SAFETY REASONS BY DEACTIVATING MY ACCOUNT. SINCE THEN I HAVE HAD THE CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP TO COMPLETE 4 RECALLS, WHICH DID NOT CLEAR UP THE PROBLEM. OR CORRECT THE FUEL PUMP FROM SEIZING UP AND STALLING OUT. I PAID FOR THE REPLACEMENT PART OF A NEW FUEL PUMP AND EVERYTHING HAS BEEN WORKING PROPERLY. AND MY ACCOUNT HAS BEEN REACTIVATED WITH LYFT. I SPOKE TO TI AUTOMOTIVE CEO, ABOUT THEIR RECALL ON THEIR FUEL PUMP SEIZE, STOPPING THE FUEL FLOW TO THE ENGINE CREATING A STALLING CONDITION. I WAS TOLD THESE ISSUE WAS ONLY IN 2010 MODELS AND THEY WILL NOT REPAIR OR ACKNOWLEDGE THE DEFECTS IN EARLIER MODELS OF CHEVY MALIBU. BUT THERE ARE ISSUES WITH OTHER YEARS MODELS STALLING OUT IN TRAFFIC.
MAY BE FUEL PUMP. CAR WILL TURN OVER BUT WON'T START.
GAS GAUGE READS INCORRECTLY AND BOUNCES ERRATICALLY FROM FULL TO EMPTY AND BACK AGAIN TURNING ON THE CHECK-ENGINE LIGHT AND SETTING OFF THE AUDIBLE LOW FUEL WARNING. THIS HAPPENS HAVE EVERY FILL-UP. IN BETWEEN FILL-UPS, GAS GAUGE "STICKS": TO SOME ARBITRARY INTERMEDIATE VALUE. IT NEVER DISPLAYS ACCURATE FUEL-REMAINING. I MUST USED THE ODOMETER MILEAGE TO KNOW WHEN TO GET GAS. THIS ERRATIC BEHAVIOR OCCURS WHEN VEHICLE IS IN MOTION OR STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 139,200.
NOTICED A FUEL SMELL COMING FROM BACK OF 2005 MAILBU MAXX, NOTHING LEAKING FOR 3 DAYS, THEN NOTICED FUEL ON THE GROUND, WAS HAVING ISSUE STARTING (FUEL LINE NOT PRESSURIZED) TURNING THE CAR ON AND OFF A COUPLE OF TIMES BEFORE CRANKING WORKED TO PRESSURIZE THE LINE. AT THE SHOP NOW, THEY SAID IT A NON-REPAIRABLE FUEL LINE COMING OFF OF THE PUMP, GOING TO HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE SENDING UNIT AND IT IS GOING TO COST ME OUT THE WAHZOO TO REPAIR, HOW IS THERE NO RECALL ON THIS? I SPOKE WITH GM RECALL LINE AND WAS TOLD THERE IS NO RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH THE VIN OF MY CAR.
FUEL GAGE DOESN'T WORK CAUSING A SAFETY HAZARD IN TRAFFIC
FUEL PUMP LEAK. NOTICED STRONG GAS SMELL THAT ONLY INCREASED AS TIME PASSED, DRIVING AND PARKED. FUEL PUMP NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. HAVE NOTICED THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM IN THIS VEHICLE. SERIOUSLY NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED.

THE CURRENT ISSUE I AM HAVING IS EVERY TIME I GET GAS, WHICH IS OFTEN BECAUSE I DRIVE 80 MILES A DAY FOR WORK, MY GAUGE WILL DROP TO EMPTY AND LOW FUEL/ LIGHT COMES ON! FUEL SHOWS INCORRECT AMOUNTS. FILL IT AND SOMETIMES IS SAYS EMPTY. *TR
MY GAS GAUGE IS NOT REPORTING THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF FUEL IN MY GAS TANK. THE ENGINE LIGHT IS ILLUMINATED 24/7 DUE TO THIS ISSUE. I BELIEVE IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE FUEL SENSOR. *TR
FOR THE PAST 4-5 MONTHS, EVERY TIME WE FILL UP WITH GAS AND THEN START THE CAR, THE FUEL GAUGE JUMPS UP TO FULL, STAYS THERE FOR A FEW MILES, THEN DROPS TO EMPTY AND LOW FUEL MESSAGE COMES ON. THE CHECK ENGINE LAMP ALSO COMES ON AND STAYS ON. AFTER ABOUT 20-30 MILES, THE FUEL GAUGE GOES BACK TO FULL AND AT THE POINT, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT GOES OFF. THIS DOESN'T ALWAYS HAPPEN. SOMETIMES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYS ON UNTIL THE NEXT FILL-UP, THEN THE SAME THING HAPPENS ALL OVER AGAIN.
THERE IS A CRACK/LEAK IN THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. THIS IS THE SECOND ONE TO BE REPLACED ON THIS CAR. THE FIRST WAS ABOUT A YEAR AFTER PURCHASE (2006) AND THE NEWEST PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AROUND THE FIRST OF THIS YEAR (2014). I TOOK IT TO A COUPLE OF MECHANICS AND THE ENTIRE UNIT WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE UNIT IS AROUND 500 PLUS LABOR AND TOTALS ABOUT 1000 DOLLARS. THIS IS ON THE SHORT LIST OF PROBLEMS I HAVE HAD WITH THIS CAR, EVEN THOUGH IT HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED AND TAKEN CARE OF. I HAVE NOT HAD ANY MAJOR ISSUES AS OTHERS HAVE, BUT THIS PARTICULAR ONE CONCERNS ME QUITE A BIT. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSIS WHERE THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE FUEL PUMP VAPOR LINE WAS CRACKED AND LEAKING FUMES. THE MECHANIC WAS ALSO UNSURE AS TO HOW THE FUEL LINE BECAME FRACTURED. THE MECHANIC ALSO ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT IF HE DID NOT GET THE VEHICLE REPAIRED AND THE LEAK CONTINUED, THE VEHICLE WOULD POSSIBLY EXPLODE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 86,000.
EVERY 18 MONTHS I GET A ERROR CODE OF P0463 AND P2119. FUEL SYSTEM WAS REPLACED TWICE AND NOW POSSIBLY A THIRD TIME. CAR WANTS TO STOP ON ITS OWN AFTER A FEW MILES OF DRIVING. SECONDARY PROBLEM ALSO INCLUDES LOW FUEL LEVEL WARNING EVEN WHEN FUEL IS AT A FULL TANK. *TR

MY ELECTRICAL SYSTEM HAS A RECALL (NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V252000 ) MY KEY IGNITION HAS A RECALL ALTHOUGH THE CHEVROLET DEALER HAS NOT RECEIVED PARTS TO REPLACE THIS DEFECT. MY TRANSMISSION ALSO HAS A DEFECT ( THE TRANSMISSION HAS A CLICK ON 2ND AND 3RD GEARS AND GM IS NOT FIXING THESE PROBLEMS AND CONTINUE TO MAKE THESE DEFECTED TRANSMISSIONS) MY TRANSMISSION REPAIR SHOP REPLACE THESE CLICKS AND CHARGED ME $1750.00 AND GAVE ME A WARRANTY. I CONSIDER US LUCKY. WE WERE IN A WAL-MART PARKING LOT 25 MILES FROM HOME, AND THE CAR WOULDN'T START. I PLAYED WITH THE IGNITION OFF AND ON FOR HALF AN HOUR, AND A CONNECTION WAS MADE, AND THE CAR STARTED. I WAS CAREFUL TO KEEP IT RUNNING, AND MADE IT HOME. THE NEXT DAY, THE SAME PROBLEM. THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTION TO THE FUEL PUMP WAS MISSING. I HAD IT TOWED TO MY REPAIR SHOP, AND THEY REPLACED THE IGNITION SWITCH. COST $620.54. ON 2/7/2013 THE FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED. I FEEL THAT THE INCIDENTS ARE CONNECTED. I THINK THE LOSS OF ELECTRICAL FEED TO THE FUEL PUMP HARMED THE PUMP, AND CAUSED IT TO FAIL. COST OF FUEL PUMP REPLACEMENT WAS $635.11.THIS ADDS UP TO $1255.65 REPAIR BILLS WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN UNNECESSARY. I FEEL THERE ARE MORE CARS OUT THERE THAT GM SHOULD BE MADE TO RECALL AND REPAIR WITH BETTER PARTS. I WAS LUCKY! OTHERS WERE NOT, AND WE DON'T NEED MORE UNNECESSARY DEATHS ON OUR HIGHWAYS. *TR

IF THE CAUSE IS A DEFECTIVE FUEL PUMP, THE PUMP MAY SEIZE STOPPING THE FUEL FLOW TO THE ENGINE CREATING A STALLING CONDITION. A VEHICLE CRASH COULD OCCUR SHOULD THE ENGINE STALL WHILE IN USE. MANY CHEVY MALIBU OWNERS FOUND THAT THE ALARM OR ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM HAD THE FUEL SYSTEM LOCKED AND THE CAR WOULD NOT START. THIS HAPPENS RANDOMLY AND AT THE MOST INCONVENIENT TIMES. THE OWNER'S MANUAL SAID TO TURN THE IGNITION KEY TO THE ON POSITION LEAVE IT ON FOR 10 MINUTES, THEN TURN IT OFF FOR 5 SECONDS AND THEN IT STARTED UP. I HAVE NOT TRIED THIS YET BUT I WILL IN THE MORNING. *TR

AROUND JUNE 2012 I STARTED SMELLING FUEL WHEN I PARKED THE CAR IN THE GARAGE. I THOUGHT I MAY HAVE OVER FILLED. THE PROBLEM PERSISTED AND I TOOK THE CAR INTO A CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR. THE PLASTIC LINE FROM THE FUEL PUMP HAD CRACKED CAUSING THE LEAK OF FUEL. I CHECKED FOR A RECALL AND FOUND THERE WAS ONE BUT THE MAXX WAS NOT ON THE LIST. I DO BELIEVE THIS RECALL INCLUDED A PONTIAC WITH THE SAME FUEL PUMP. SINCE I HAVE A SAFETY ISSUE DUE TO THE ARIZONA HEAT IN PHOENIX THE MAXX SHOULD BE INCLUDED DUE TO THE MILEAGE AND THE YEAR. I STARTED TO SMELL GAS AFTER PARKING MY CAR IN GARAGE ABOUT ONE MONTH AGO. CHANGED FUEL CAP, DIDN'T WORK. THE GAS SMELL BECAME MORE AND MORE STRONG AFTER FEW WEEKS. DID SOME SEARCH AND FOUND IT'S A COMMON PROBLEM OF FUEL PUMP LEAK IN 2004-2006 CHEVY MALIBU MAXX. THE HIGH PRESSURE LINE BREAKS AND THE OWNERS HAVE TO REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP COMPLETELY, WHICH COSTS MORE THAN $600. THERE WAS A RECALL OF FUEL PUMP BUT NOT FOR THE ORIGINAL ONE. GM/CHEVY SHOULD RECALL THE FAULTY FUEL PUMP, IT'S VERY DANGEROUS SINCE IT'S EASY TO CATCH FIRE AND VERY BAD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT!!! *TR

A FUEL SMELL/ODOR BEGAN PERMEATING THE VEHICLE AND THE IMMEDIATE AREA AROUND IT. THE NEXT DAY, VEHICLE BEGAN REQUIRING TWO CRANKS TO GET STARTED. AFTER TROUBLESHOOTING, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THERE WAS A FUEL LEAK, AND IT WAS COMING FROM THE FUEL PUMP. THE PART WAS REPLACED, AND THE FUEL PUMP HAD A CRACKED PLASTIC PORTION WHICH THE MECHANIC SAID HE HAD NEVER SEEN HAPPEN BEFORE. THIS KIND OF THING MUST HAVE BEEN THE RESULT OF A DEFECT WITHIN THE FORMATION OF THAT PLASTIC PORTION OF THE FUEL PUMP. *TR

THE FUEL GAUGE WOULD CHIME AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD ILLUMINATE ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE VEHICLE AND PROVIDED NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 126,000.
THE FUEL GAUGE IS ERRATIC AFTER I FILL THE TANK, THE GAUGE GOES DIRECTLY TO EMPTY AFTER DRIVING ABOUT 2 MILES. IT WOULD CORRECT ITSELF WHEN THERE WAS ABOUT A HALF TANK OF GAS LEFT. VEHICLE HAS FAILED TO START AFTER DRIVING AND THEN PARKING. FIRST TIME HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO S REPAIR SHOP. THEY REPLACED FUEL PUMP AND INSTALLED A NEW FUEL FILTER. VEHICLE STILL DID NOT START. I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM ON THE WEB. I FOUND SEVERAL COMPLAINTS . I FOUND THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THE VEHICLE ANTI- THEFT DEVICE. IT MALFUNCTIONS AND SHUTS THE FUEL INJECTORS DOWN. I FOUND A FIX ON THE WEB, YOU HAVE TO TURN THE KEY ON FOR 10 TO 15 MINUTES UNTIL THE VEHICLE THEFT LIGHT QUITS BLINKING TURN KEY TO THE OFF POSITION REMOVE THE KEY WAIT 1 TO 2 MINUTES AND THEN START VEHICLE IT WORKS. THIS IS A TEMPORARY FIX IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. IT HAS HAPPENED TO ME TWO MORE TIMES. I CALLED THE LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP AND INQUIRED TO SEE IF THEY HAD HEARD OR HAVE SEEN THIS PROBLEM I WAS TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE 2002 AND THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RE-CALL FOR THE PROBLEM. I CALLED CHEVROLET AND INFORMED THEM OF THE PROBLEM. THEIR RESPONSE WAS THAT THEY WERE NOT AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP GM HAS BEEN AWARE OF THE PROBLEM FOR YEARS. AND THEY HAVE NOT DONE A THING TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. ACCORDING IT WILL COST $500.00 TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE PARTS. THIS IN MY OPINION IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. MY 2005 CHEVY MALIBU IS EXPERIENCING AN ISSUE WITH THE FUEL GAUGE IN REGARDS TO EVERY TIME I FILL UP ON GAS. AFTER THE NOZZLE CLICKS ONCE LETTING ME KNOW THAT IT IS FULL, I TAKE THE NOZZLE OUT. WHEN I START THE CAR, THE GAS NEEDLE GOES UP TO FULL AND STAYS THERE FOR ABOUT 3 MILES OR SO. THEN IT SUDDENLY GOES TO EMPTY AND I GET THE LOW FUEL MESSAGE, THE STEADY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND THE CHIME. AFTER DRIVING 30 MORE MILES, THE NEEDLE FIXES IT SELF AND GOES TO THE CORRECT LEVEL OF GAS. IT WORKS FINE FOR THE REST OF THE TIME UNTIL I FILL UP AGAIN. THE LOW FUEL MESSAGE GOES AWAY AND THE LIGHT ON THE DASH BOARD GOES AWAY TOO. THIS IS VERY SIMILAR TO A RECENT MESSAGE MY FATHER-IN-LAW RECEIVED FROM GM CONCERNING HIS 2005 CHEVY ENVOY. HE RECEIVED A LETTER REGARDING A SPECIAL COVERAGE FOR FAILING FUEL GAUGE SENSORS. THE DESCRIPTION IN THE LETTER IS VERY SIMILAR TO MY SAME PROBLEM. *TT

2005 CHEVY MALIBU. GAS GAUGE STARTED GIVING INCORRECT READINGS RESULTING IN CAR RUNNING OUT OF GAS AND STALLING, UNABLE TO RESTART. GAUGE NOW WILL ALWAYS READ COMPLETELY FULL WHEN STARTING CAR, THEN AFTER A FEW MINUTES, WILL FAIL AND DROP ALL THE WAY TO COMPLETELY EMPTY. I HAVE SPOKEN TO MANY OTHER GM OWNERS AND SEVERAL OF THEM HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUE, COSTING THEM ALMOST $1,000 IN REPAIRS TO GET THE GAUGE/FLOAT REPLACED. THIS IS A SERIOUS AND POTENTIALLY A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM BECAUSE PEOPLE COULD RUN OUT OF GAS AND BE STRANDED MILES FROM HELP AND THIS COULD HAPPEN IN ADVERSE OR FREEZING WEATHER CONDITIONS. IF CHILDREN HAPPEN TO BE IN THE CAR, THE SERIOUSNESS OF THIS IS CONSIDERABLY HIGHER. I FEEL THIS IS A MAJOR AND WIDESPREAD DEFECT AND THAT THIS PARTICULAR PIECE OF EQUIPMENT SHOULD BE RECALLED AND FIXED AT NO COST TO THE CUSTOMER. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 50,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,000.
