NHTSA Campaign: 19V601000

Component: STEERING:LINKAGES:TIE ROD ASSEMBLY

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2018-2019 BMW X1 sDrive28i, X1 xDrive28i, 2019 X2 xDrive28i, MINI Cooper S Convertible, Countryman, and John Cooper Works Countryman vehicles. The steering gear tie rod may have been assembled incorrectly, which may result in excessive wear of the tie rod end, eventually causing it to break.

Risk: A broken steering tie rod would lead to a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles and replace the tie rods and ball joints as necessary, free of charge. The recall began October 11, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or MINI customer service at 1-866-825-1525.

NHTSA Campaign: 19V074000

Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TAIL LIGHTS

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2018-2019 BMW X1 sDrive28i and X1 xDrive28i vehicles. Contaminated hardware may cause the attachment brackets of the taillight housings to crack, causing the lights to loosen or possibly detach from the vehicle.

Risk: If a taillight detaches from the vehicle, it would no longer provide the required lighting to following traffic, or it may become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will properly secure the taillights, free of charge. The recall began March 28, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

NHTSA Campaign: 19V349000

Component: STRUCTURE:BODY:ROOF AND PILLARS

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2016-2019 X1 sDrive28i and X1 xDrive28i vehicles. In the event of a crash where the occupants head contacts the B-pillar, the pillar may not absorb an adequate amount of the impact. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 201, "Occupant Protection in Interior Impact."

Risk: In the event of a crash, the insufficient impact absorption can increase the risk of injury.

Fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the vertical trim pieces on the upper portion of the interior B-Pillars, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed July 1, 2019. Second notices will be sent as parts become available, starting on September 27, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Filed: Jan 2024

Your emergency call (SOS) system isn't working, which means your car won't be able to communicate with emergency services if you're in an accident. BMW identified water leaking from the shark fin antenna onto the telematics control unit (TCU) as the likely cause. Fixing this requires removing the headliner and replacing the TCU, which is an expensive repair due to the component's location.

Your emergency call system warning light came on your dashboard. BMW notified you in December 2024 that your battery was covered under an extended warranty replacement program, but by the time you could take your car to the dealer, the warranty coverage window had expired. The dealer refused to do the repair under warranty, though BMW eventually agreed to cover 50% of the battery replacement cost. This happened at 44,770 miles.

Filed: Jan 2020

You received a recall notice for your 2019 BMW X1 related to a structural issue (Campaign 19V349000). When you contacted the dealer and BMW directly, both told you the required parts aren't currently available and they don't have an estimated arrival date. You haven't experienced any actual problems with your vehicle yet. Getting this recall completed will likely require the dealer to order and install the specific structural parts once they become available.

Your 2019 BMW X1 is subject to a recall (campaign 19V349000) related to the vehicle's structure. However, the repair parts needed to fix this recall issue are currently not available from BMW. The dealership and manufacturer have been unable to provide a timeframe for when the parts will be in stock. While you haven't experienced any actual failure yet, the repair will likely involve replacing or reinforcing structural components once parts become available.

Your moonroof spontaneously shattered while you were driving at 65 mph on the interstate, covering you with glass. There was no warning before it happened, and you were fortunate not to lose control of the vehicle. The dealership replaced the moonroof at no cost under warranty, likely involving removal of the damaged panel and installation of a new moonroof assembly.

Forward Collision Avoidance1 issue
criticalFORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
CrashFiled: Nov 2021

Your car's forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking system failed to prevent or mitigate a rear-end collision on York Road during heavy traffic. Your wife was driving when the vehicle struck the car ahead, causing her to sustain serious injuries including a broken sternum and bruising. The steering wheel, driver's lower leg, and passenger curtain airbags deployed on impact. An investigation into why the collision avoidance system did not engage or slow the vehicle before impact is needed.

Filed: Oct 2020

Your car shut down completely without warning while you were driving on the highway and wouldn't restart. The dashboard lights were blinking erratically, and you couldn't safely pull over to the shoulder. This type of sudden shutdown is a serious safety issue that could have caused an accident. The repair will likely involve diagnosing the electrical system and engine control modules to find what caused the unexpected shutdown.

Suspension,engine1 issue
highSUSPENSION,ENGINE
Filed: Sep 2025

Your 2019 X1 has a leaking thermostat that triggered an engine warning light, and BMW identified it as needing immediate attention. Additionally, the engine mounts have failed after less than 6 years of operation, which was also flagged as requiring immediate attention at the same service visit. Similar thermostat issues affected 2018 X1 models under a recall, but yours wasn't included despite having the same problem. Fixing these issues will likely involve replacing the thermostat and engine mounts.

Engine And Engine Cooling, electrical System1 issue
highENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Nov 2024

Your car started leaking coolant while idling, with puddles forming underneath the vehicle even though no warning lights came on. The dealer diagnosed a failed water pump and replaced it, confirming this issue is part of a known NHTSA recall campaign. The water pump replacement should resolve the coolant leak.
