ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
The Gates Corporation (Gates) is recalling certain aftermarket Tru-Flow Water Pumps, part number TFW 41127, sold at certain NAPA Auto Parts and/or installed by automotive service technicians after November 1, 2013 (and manufactured August 2013 through October 2013) that have a black-colored pulley/sprocket or do not have 'US9377' stamped on the water pump housing. These service replacement parts were sold for use in model year 1999-2005 Audi A4, 2000-2006 Audi TT, 1998-2005 Volkswagen Beetle, 1999-2006 Golf, 1999-2008 and 2011-2013 Volkswagen Jetta, and 2000-2005 Volkswagen Passat. In the affected water pumps, the pulley or sprocket that turns the timing belt may develop microfractures causing the timing belt to fail.
Fix: Gates will notify owners, and dealers will replace the water pump, free of charge. The recall began during May 2014. Owners may contact The Gates Corporation at 1-303-744-1911.

Water pump busted while driving at 20 miles an hour
The contact owns a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated while driving approximately 40 MPH, the splash guard detached from the vehicle and damaged the radiator. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to continue driving to his destination. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
The contact owns a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen. The contact stated while driving approximately 55 MPH, the catalytic convertor warning light illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the particle filter needed to be removed and reinstalled. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred and the vehicle was taken to a different dealer who determined that the particle filter needed to be checked and reinstalled. Additionally, the EGR cooler needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The contact had taken the vehicle back to the second dealer; however, the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE SAME DEALER TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE PREVIOUS PARTS THAT WERE REPLACED, NEEDED TO BE REPLACED A SECOND TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. WHEN I USED THE HORN MY ENGINE DIED AND CAR WOULD NOT START BACK UP. I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT THE TIME.
DRIVING THIS VW JETTA TDI 2011 ON THE 605 FREEWAY SOUTH IN LONG BEACH WHEN THE YELLOW GLOW PLUG LIGHT STARTED LINKING. CAR LOST POWER. WOULD NOT ACCELERATE, I ROLLED OUT OF THE FREEWAY TO AN EXIT. AFTER THIS ENGINE STOPPED. CAR WOULD NOT START ANYMORE.I CALLED VW CARE TO START A CLAIM BECAUSE THIS CAR BELONGS TO THE DIESEL GATE SCANDAL. TO MY BAD LUCK, I FOUND OUT A FEW WEEKS AFTER I BOUGHT THIS CAR, 12/17/2019, THAT THEY HAD MANY REPAIRS MADE AND ALSO THAT THE FUEL PUMP WILL GO BAD AND THE REPAIR COST THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. THE LADY OF VW CARE, (800)822-8987 TOLD ME THAT MY WARRANTY FOR THE FUEL PUMP EXPIRED AT 174,620. SHE ASKED ME WHATS THE CURRENT MILEAGE. THAT IS 174,847. SO SHE SAID MY CAR IS NOT COVERED ANY MORE. I STILL ASKED HER TO PUT IN A CLAIM. SHE GAVE ME THE FOLLOWING CLAIM NUMBER:[XXX]. I JUST FEEL VERY SUSPICIOUS AFTER THEY HID SO MUCH INFORMATION BEFORE DURING THE SCANDAL FOR MY CAR TO DIE EXACTLY A FEW HUNDRED MILES AFTER THIS WARRANTY EXPIRES. KEY GETS STUCK IN IGNITION WHEN TURNING ENGINE OFF

IT ALL STARTED WITH A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. APPARENTLY THE CAR JUMPED TIMING AND THE CRANKSHAFT WENT BAD. THIS CAUSED COMPLETE AND TOTAL ENGINE FAILURE. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE JETTA. I BELIEVE A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT IS NEEDED.

THE CRANK SENSOR WAS REPLACED, BUT THE FAILURES CONTINUED. THE LOCAL DEALER (WHITE ALLEN VOLKSWAGEN, 648 SPRINGBORO PIKE, DAYTON, OH) AND THE MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,000. THE VIN WAS INVALID.

ENGINE/CAR AT LOW SPEEDS BEGINS SHAKING AND REVS LIGHTS FLICKER CAR WILL EVEN SHUT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVE HUGE SAFETY CONCERN! DEALER AND MECHANICS HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIGURE THE PROBLEM OUT. REPLACED CRANKSHAFT AND TIMING VALVES ALONG WITH OIL AND FLUIDS NEW AND RESET CAR COMPUTER. STILL NOT FIXED! RESEARCHED ON GOOGLE AND TONS OF OTHER VOLKSWAGEN OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING SAME ISSUES.
WHEN DRIVING THE LOW OIL PRESSURE LIGHT COMES ON AND GOES OFF 4 OR 5 TIMES THEN IS PERFECTLY FINE THE REST OF THE TRIP. IT HAPPENS IN COLD AND HOT WEATHER. WHEN THE LOW OIL PRESSURE LIGHT COMES ON, IT'S ALWAYS WHEN I LET OFF THE ACCELERATOR TO COME TO A STOP. ONCE I START MOVING AGAIN, THE LIGHT GOES OFF. THE CORRECT OIL/FILTER HAVE BEEN INSTALLED, VW DEALERSHIP SAID IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME AND THE OIL PRESSURE SENSOR WAS BAD. I CHANGED THE SENSOR AND IT STILL DOES THE SAME THING. WHILE RESEARCHING IT ON GOOGLE, IT APPEARS A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE THIS SAME ISSUE, BUT NO ONE HAS A SOLUTION.VW DEALERSHIP HAS LIED TO ME BEFORE SO I DON'T TRUST THEM WORKING ON MY CAR.

CAR STALLS INTERMITTENTLY UNDER VARIOUS CONDITIONS ACCELERATING DE-ACCELERATING WARMED UP, AND COLD FUEL PUMP HAS BEEN REPLACED ALONG WITH FILTER AND NOW POWER RELAY HAS BEEN REPLACED BUT IT STILL STALLS VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE.
HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP BREAKDOWN LITTERED THE DIESEL INJECTION SYSTEM WITH METAL PARTICLES. AT LEAST THE FOLLOWING WERE DAMAGED, ACCORDING TO VOLKSWAGEN FUEL PUMP HAS METAL IN IT INTAKE FUEL PUMP HIGH PRESSURE PUMP AUXILLARY FUEL PUMP FUEL LINES 4 INJECTORS FUEL RAIL W/SENSORS THIS IS A $6,500 FIX AND THERE IS AN ASTRONOMICAL FAILURE RATE THAT IS GREATER THAN 1%. I BELIEVE THAT THIS PROBLEM SHOULD BE REVISITED.
CAR SHAKES WHEN DRIVING TO THE POINT WE HAVE TO PULL OVER TURN THE CAR OFF AND RESTART IT. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND GOES OFF AS IT PLEASES AS DOES THE EPC LIGHT. CAR WON'T ACCELERATE WHILE SHAKING.
WHILE DRIVING STRAIGHT ON A CITY HIGHWAY, THE CAR STALLED, AND WOULD NOT RESTART. THIS HAPPENED IN MODERATE TRAFFIC, BUT WE WERE ABLE TO COAST OUT OF THE ROAD AND INTO A PARKING LOT. THE DEALER WHERE WE BOUGHT THE CAR ANALYZED THE FUEL SYSTEM, AND RULED THAT OUT. HE FOUND A BAD FUSE RELATED TO THE FUEL PUMP, AND CLAIMS AT THIS TIME THAT IT IS PROBABLY AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE. AT THIS TIME, THE EXACT CAUSE REMAINS UNKNOWN. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME THAT WE'VE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, THOUGH THE PREVIOUS TWO TIMES THE DEALERS CLAIMED THAT IT WAS A FUEL SYSTEM ISSUE.

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 108,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
MANUAL TRANSMISSION TDI SPORTWAGEN. DRIVING 30 MPH IN 4TH GEAR. FLASHING GLOW PLUG WARNING LIGHT WENT ON. VEHICLE LOST POWER AND SPEED. ATTEMPTED TO DOWNSHIFT. ENGINE IMMEDIATELY SHUT OFF AND RPM WENT IMMEDIATELY TO 0. LOST POWER STEERING AND BRAKES. DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH SPEED TO BRING VEHICLE TO CURB. VEHICLE STOPPED AT INTERSECTION AND HAD TO BE TOWED. DEALER DIAGNOSED AS HPFP FAILURE.

THE FAILURE RECURRED THREE TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE NUMBER TWO AND THREE FUEL INJECTORS WERE FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 105,000.
MY CAR STARTED SHAKING VIOLENTLY AS I WAS DRIVING. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON ALONG WITH MY EPC LIGHT. THE CAR FELT LIKE IT WAS GOING TO BREAKDOWN ON THE INTERSTATE. I PULLED OVER AND TURNED THE CAR OFF THEN TURNED IT BACK ON AND IT WAS FINE. I DROVE A LITTLE WAYS DOWN THE ROAD AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED, SO I TOOK IT TO A DEALERSHIP AND THEY STATED L HAD A BAD IGNITION COIL WITH THE CODES 351,300,301,304,130. THEY REPLACED THE PART AND ALMOST EXACTLY A YEAR LATER 7/6/2015 I'M HAVING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM.
TRAVELING ALONG AT HIGHWAY SPEED. CAR SPUTTERED AND DIED. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER AND BE TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP. APPARENTLY THERE IS A WELL-KNOWN DESIGN FLAW IN THE INTERCOOLER INTAKE PIPE ON ALL VOLKSWAGEN TDI (DIESEL) ENGINES SINCE 2009 THAT CAUSES MOISTURE TO DEVELOP IN THE INTERCOOLER INTAKE PIPE DURING COLD WEATHER. IF ENOUGH MOISTURE COLLECTS IN THIS PIPE, IT WILL GET CHANNELED TO THE ENGINE AND BE FED INTO THE CYLINDERS, CAUSING THE CAR TO SPUTTER AND STALL EXACTLY AS MINE DID - OR TO SIMPLY NOT START ON COLD DAYS. OTHER SIDE EFFECTS OF THIS, ARE SEVERE ENGINE DAMAGE. VW IS WELL AWARE OF THIS ISSUE, AND HAS ISSUED A TSB ABOUT IT. "TSB# 21 11 06 / 2025464 FROZEN AIR CHARGE COOLER" AND THERE IS A REPAIR PART THEY HAVE ALREADY DESIGNED - # COLD WEATHER IC KIT 1K0-198-803-B... HOWEVER, THE PART IS ONLY MADE AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST AND AT OWNER EXPENSE IF OUT OF WARRANTY. THIS IS NOT A WARRANTY ISSUE; THIS IS HUGE SAFETY HAZARD AND A DESIGN FLAW THAT VW NEEDS TO CORRECT FOR ALL OWNERS. THIS SITUATION ALSO, APPARENTLY DOES NOT THROW ANY CODES TO THE VEHICLE COMPUTER, AS THERE ARE NO SENSORS OF ANY TYPE IN THIS INTERCOOLER PIPE. THE ONLY WAY TO DETERMINE THAT THIS IS THE CAUSE, IT TO PUT THE VEHICLE UP, AND REMOVE ONE END OF THIS HOSE AND SEE IF WATER OR 'SLUDGE' DRAINS OUT OF IT, AND THIS PIPE WOULD PROBABLY BE DESTROYED IN ANY FRONT-END COLLISION, AS IT'S FAR FORWARD IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. TOOK TO DEALER AND WAS TOLD A CATASTROPHIC FUEL SYSTEM FAILURE OCCURRED AND THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. FOUND OTHER CAR OWNERS ONLINE HAVE HAD SIMILAR ISSUES. I HAVE A 2011 VW JETTA TDI (DIESEL). AFTER LEAVING MY CAR PARKED FOR ABOUT A WEEK, IT WOULD NOT START. OUR 2011 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA TDI DEVELOPED AN ENGINE OIL LEAK. WHEN WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THE SERVICE MANAGER REFUSED TO LET US DRIVE IT DUE TO THE POSSIBILITY OF AN ENGINE FIRE. PER THE SERVICE MANGER THE OIL LEAK WAS CAUSING AN ATOMIZATION OF THE ENGINE OIL THAT COULD HAVE REACHED HEATED PARTS OF THE ENGINE OR EXHAUST AND CAUSED AN OIL FIRE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED THE CONTACT WAS REMOVING AN ITEM FROM THE TRUNK WHEN SHE WAS BURNED ON THE CALF OF HER LEFT LEG BY THE MUFFLER. THE CONTACT STATED THE MUFFLER WAS EXTENDED OUTWARD TOO FAR CAUSING HER TO COME IN CONTACT WITH IT. THE CONTACT HAD TO GO TO THE DOCTOR FOR THE BURN. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1,000.
TRAVELING 30 MPH. BATTERY LIGHT LUMINATED AND ENGINE STALLED. PULLED OVER AND RESTARTED ENGINE AND IT STARTED FINE BATTERY LIGHT TURNED OFF. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED A RELAY. ONE WEEK LATER DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 75MPH ENGINE STALLED AGAIN IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. STARTED RIGHT BACK. DROVE ANOTHER 10 MILES AND IT SHUT OFF AGAIN. STARTED UP AND DROVE IT RIGHT TO THE DEALER. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON NOW. THE 2011 JETTA WAS ISSUED A RECALL, AND THAT REPAIR WAS DONE A MONTH AGO. *KB
I PURCHASED A 2011 VW JETTA S SEDAN ON 1/24/2011. AT APPROXIMATELY 1000 MILES, THE CAR BEGAN MAKING A WHISTLING NOISE FROM UNDER THE DASH NEARLY ALL THE TIME. I BROUGHT THE CAR IN FOR SERVICE ON 2/16/11 AND AFTER A FEW DAYS, I WAS TOLD THE PROBLEM WAS ISOLATED TO THE THERMAL EXPANSION VALVE IN THE AC SYSTEM. THIS WAS REPLACED AND THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED. ABOUT 2 WEEKS LATER, THE SOUND RETURNED. I BROUGHT THE CAR IN AGAIN ON 3/29/11 AND AGAIN WAS CONTACTED A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER. THE DEALER SERVICE REP TOLD ME THAT THE VW FACTORY TECH REP LOOKED AT THE CAR AND THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. HIS DETERMINATION IS THAT IT IS OPERATING ACCORDING TO SPECIFICATION. I CONTACTED VW OF AMERICA AND THEY CONFIRMED THIS AS THE OUTCOME AND THAT IF I REMAIN UNSATISFIED I COULD CALL THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU AUTO LINE FOR RESOLUTION, WHICH I HAVE ALSO DONE. THIS ISN'T A SAFETY ISSUE, BUT CERTAINLY REPRESENTS A DESIGN FLAW THAT VW IS NOT WILLING TO RECTIFY. THE CAR WHISTLES NEARLY CONSTANTLY WHEN THE AC SYSTEM IS AT OPERATING PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE. ADDITIONALLY, THE CLEARCOAT SUSTAINED DAMAGE AFTER LESS THAN 48 HOURS OF EXPOSURE TO BIRD DROPPINGS. THE DEALERSHIP STATED THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO AND THE WARRANTY SPECIFICALLY EXCLUDES THAT DAMAGE FROM COVERAGE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, AND CRASHED INTO THE REAR END BUMPER OF THE PROCEEDING VEHICLE. SUDDENLY, FLAMES EMITTED FROM THE FRONT HOOD AREA. THE CONTACT EXITED THE VEHICLE WHICH THEN ENGULFED INTO MASSIVE FLAMES. THERE WERE NO PERSONAL INJURIES. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED FOR THE INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED AND TOWED TO A COLLISION CENTER. THE MANUFACTURER AND INSURANCE COMPANY PLANNED TO PERFORM AN INVESTIGATION TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE AFTER PERFORMING A DIAGNOSTIC TEST BECAUSE THERE WERE NO ERROR CODES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2,800.
NEW CAR MANUAL TRANSMISSION, CAR STALLS OUT AT LOW SPEEDS ON SNOW COVERED ROADS. RPM'S 1400 - 2000 CAN STOP PROBLEM IF TRACTION CONTROL IS DISABLED. I HAVE DRIVEN MANUALS FOR OVER 30 YEARS AND IT IS NOT OPERATOR ERROR IT IS A PROBLEM WITH THE TRACTION CONTROL AND COMPUTER SYSTEM - IT DIES IN TRAFFIC AND REQUIRES THE KEY TO BE TURNED ALL THE WAY OFF AND THEN BACK ON TO GET THE CAR STARTED. TAKING THE RPM'S UP TO 2500 AVOIDS THE PROBLEM - BUT THIS WILL CERTAINLY WEAR OUT THE CLUTCH. DEALER FEELS IT IS JUST A SENSITIVE CLUTCH - I NOW HAVE 600 MILES ON THE CAR AND HAVE TO DISABLE TRACTION CONTROL TO STOP THE STALLING AT START UPS AND LOW SPEED SHIFTING.

MY NEW 2011 VW JETTA SPORTSWAGEN DECELERATED SUDDENLY WHILE DRIVING AT 65 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY. THE ENGINE LOST MOST OF ITS POWER AND THE CAR COULD ONLY GO AT ABOUT 30 MPH. THE CAR REGAINED ALL ITS POWER AFTER THE ENGINE WAS SHUT OFF. I CONSIDER THIS A CRITICAL SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE CAR.
THIS IS AN ADDENDUM TO COMPLAINT ODI# 10362604 AND REFERENCES 6 ADDITIONAL "GLOWPLUG" WARNING LIGHT ODI COMPLAINTS FILED FOR THE 2009 MODEL YEAR. (THE 3 REFERENCES IN THE ORIGINAL COMPLAINT WERE ONLY FOR THE 2010 MODEL YEAR.). THIS BRINGS THE TOTAL TO 9 OTHER VOLKSWAGEN JETTA SPORTWAGEN TDI INCIDENTS THAT ARE SIMILAR OR IDENTICAL TO MY OWN. BASED ON THESE MULTIPLE REPORTS, THERE CAN BE NO QUESTION BUT THAT VOLKSWAGEN HAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS HAZARDOUS AND COSTLY DEFECT FOR AT LEAST 3 YEARS. 18 DAYS AND 400 ODOMETER MILES AFTER PURCHASING MY 2011 JETTA SPORTWAGEN TDI, THE 'GLOWLIGHT' WARNING LIGHT CAME ON WHILE DRIVING. THE FOLLOWING DAY, THE 'GLOWLIGHT' BEGAN TO BLINK, THEN THE 'CATALYTIC' WARNING LIGHT ALSO BEGAN BLINKING. CAR WAS TAKEN TO DEALERSHIP THE SAME DAY. AFTER (REMOTE) DIAGNOSTIC ASSISTANCE FROM THE MANUFACTURER, DEALER REPORTED THAT THE 'CRANK SENSOR' NEEDED REPLACING. AFTER 2 DAYS, THE DEALER INFORMED ME THAT IT WAS NOT THE 'CRANK SENSOR' AFTER ALL. DAYS LATER, A MANUFACTURER'S REP INSPECTED THE CAR AT THE DEALERSHIP AND DETERMINED THAT AN ONBOARD COMPUTER WAS THE PROBLEM, AND THAT ONE WOULD ARRIVE FROM GERMANY IN 10 TO 14 DAYS. DEALER LATER REVISED THAT TIME ESTIMATE TO 35 DAYS. IF DEALER'S ESTIMATE IS CORRECT, MY NEW CAR WILL HAVE BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR WELL OVER 40 DAYS. NOTE: U.S. DEPT.
