Component: SUSPENSION:CRITICAL FASTENERS
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2022 Volkswagen Atlas FL and 2022-2023 Atlas Cross Sport vehicles. The driver-side rear trailing arm bolts may not have been tightened properly, allowing them to loosen and fall out.
Risk: Unsecured bolts may cause the trailing arm to fracture, resulting in a sudden loss of vehicle control and increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will replace the driver side rear trailing arm bolts, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 25, 2022. Owners may contact Volkswagen's customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 42M2.

Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 156)
Engine →3 issues
Your engine shut down suddenly while you were driving on the highway, forcing you to pull over. You had a recall performed a few months earlier for engine rods, but the dealership said the test passed and didn't replace them. This suggests the engine may have failed despite the recall service.

Your 2022 Volkswagen Atlas is experiencing a serious engine problem. You've noticed a rattling noise from the engine, the EPC warning light keeps coming on, and the engine has shut down while you're driving. These symptoms suggest a significant bottom-end engine issue that needs immediate professional diagnosis and repair, which may require engine rebuilding or replacement.

Your engine experienced a sudden, catastrophic failure at highway speed when the PCV valve (positive crankcase ventilation valve) failed, causing excessive pressure that blew the dipstick tube out of the engine block and forced hot oil out onto the engine and exhaust system. This sudden loss of oil created an immediate risk of engine seizure and fire, and left your vehicle disabled and stranded on the freeway. Volkswagen is aware of this issue under Service Campaign 10LP, which addresses defective PCV valves on this engine. The repair will involve replacing the failed PCV valve and oil separator, and inspecting or replacing any seals that were damaged by the pressure spike.

Electrical System →3 issues
Your infotainment system, which displays your backup camera and other safety features, keeps rebooting and then goes completely black. The dealer performed a software update that temporarily fixed it, but the problem returned within 20 minutes of leaving. The dealer acknowledged this is a known issue affecting multiple Volkswagen models since October 2025 but said they couldn't help, and Volkswagen customer service is unsure how to resolve it. The fix will likely require Volkswagen to develop and deploy a permanent software update to the infotainment system.

Your remote start feature stopped working after a Volkswagen software update. You're also experiencing intermittent electrical problems that trigger a "check tail light" warning message. Volkswagen has already replaced the tail light and its electrical module, but the problem persists.

Your infotainment system screen went completely blank and stopped working at 58,435 miles. A Volkswagen dealership diagnosed a failed infotainment control module and recommended replacement. Volkswagen denied coverage because you were about 8,000 miles past the warranty period, despite no signs of damage or misuse. The repair will involve replacing the infotainment control module.

Unknown Or Other →2 issues
Your car is stalling unexpectedly at low RPMs and then won't restart for about 10 minutes, making it unsafe and unreliable to drive. The dealer has been unable to identify the cause after two service visits. The fix will likely require detailed diagnostic testing to pinpoint whether the issue is fuel delivery, ignition, or engine control related.

Exterior Lighting →2 issues
Both of your daytime running lights (DRLs) are going out at the same time on your 2022 Atlas, even though the car is only about 4 years old with 90,000 miles. No warning lights appeared before you noticed the problem during an inspection in January 2026, and two different VW dealerships confirmed they both found the same issue. The fix will likely involve replacing the DRL bulbs or checking the DRL electrical circuit and wiring.

Electrical System,air Bags,engine →1 issue
Your car shut off while driving and won't restart without adding extra fuel. You're experiencing grinding and squealing brake noises along with an EPC warning code that forces the engine to shut down. The engine has significant rust buildup in the air intake valves, and the vehicle appears to have been heavily repaired with misaligned bolts and aftermarket parts from a salvage yard.

Unknown Or Other,engine,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your car caught fire and became completely engulfed in flames just minutes after you started driving it. Your son was barely able to escape before the engine burst into flames. This is an extremely dangerous failure that requires immediate investigation by Volkswagen to determine the cause.

Seats →1 issue
Your middle row captain chair suddenly lurched forward while you were slowing down at a stoplight, trapping your child's head between the car seat and your seat. There was no warning light or error message before this happened. The dealership found a faulty latch mechanism and replaced one captain chair, but won't replace the matching seat on the other side since it hasn't failed yet. The fix will likely involve replacing the seat latch assembly and possibly the entire captain chair seat on the second row.

Air Bags →1 issue
While driving on November 26th after swerving to avoid a cat and scraping your tires and rims on a curb, your side airbags deployed unexpectedly even though you didn't hit anything. Your steering wheel airbag did not deploy. A police officer and towing company representative both confirmed the airbags had deployed, and you're concerned this unexpected deployment should be investigated. The fix may involve a diagnostic scan of your airbag control module and potentially replacing the airbag sensors or control unit.

Steering,electrical System,engine →1 issue
Your steering wheel has locked up while driving, forcing you to stop and restart the engine to regain control. At the same time, your dashboard warning lights flash erratically and the engine power control light turns on and off repeatedly. This combination of steering failure and electrical malfunctions has happened multiple times even after dealer repairs, creating a serious safety risk.

Electrical System,exterior Lighting,visibility/wiper →1 issue
Your driver-side headlight daytime running light (DRL) has failed prematurely on your 2022 Atlas. The dealership told you the DRL cannot be replaced separately and the entire headlight assembly must be replaced at significant cost. You've requested warranty assistance from Volkswagen, but they denied your request and only offered a 20% dealership discount.

Engine,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
After an oil change in October 2025, your oil sensor warning light came on. You took your vehicle to the dealership for diagnosis and were told the oil separator sensor was defective and needed replacement, costing you $580.99 out of pocket. In November 2025, you received a recall notice for the same oil separator issue that you had just paid to fix. You've submitted a reimbursement claim to Volkswagen but haven't received a response yet.

Engine And Engine Cooling →1 issue
Your coolant reservoir is losing coolant every week with no visible leaks under the engine. A mechanic found that coolant is leaking into a protective shield underneath the engine, which is why you don't see it dripping. You'll need to keep refilling the coolant reservoir regularly until the leak is found and sealed, likely involving inspection of the cooling system connections and the protective shield underneath.
