Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 228)
Engine →4 issues
Your parked Tacoma caught fire under the hood while you were away, with flames visible when you returned. The fire department extinguished the fire, and your vehicle was inspected by both your insurance company and Toyota's manufacturer to determine the cause. At 123,000 miles, this represents a serious engine fire that requires investigation into potential fuel system, electrical, or engine component failures.

Your engine is stalling, rattling, and running rough with occasional misfires, and it's entering limp mode (reduced power mode). You've had repairs done, but these problems keep coming back and your engine isn't functioning properly.

Your engine has a coolant leak coming from the crossover pipe located at the rear of the engine. You may notice a coolant smell, but there won't be any warning lights to alert you beforehand. This repair took 14 hours at a local shop, so it's a significant job that requires removing components around the rear of the engine.

Your check engine light came on while driving, and diagnosis revealed misfires in multiple cylinders. When you inspected the engine, you discovered that the air intake flap (which regulates air to the engine) had detached, along with an unknown plastic piece. The dealer was notified but did not provide a clear resolution. The repair will likely involve reattaching or replacing the detached intake manifold flap and identifying the unknown component that came loose.

Fuel/propulsion System →3 issues
Your truck suddenly started lurching and running rough while driving, forcing you to pull over immediately on a main road. A mechanic diagnosed a failed fuel pump and noted there's a federal recall for this issue, but your dealership refused to cover it because your truck was built in June 2017, before the September 2017 recall start date—even though it has the exact same problem. Replacing the fuel pump will likely involve removing the fuel tank to access and install a new pump assembly.

Your fuel system is leaking at the connection where the fuel line meets the fuel tank on the driver's side rear of the vehicle. This is located near the rear of the tank and requires inspection to prevent fuel loss and potential safety issues. The repair will likely involve replacing or tightening the fuel line connection and possibly replacing seals or gaskets at that joint.

Your truck isn't accelerating properly when you press the gas pedal, and the engine is stalling. You've also noticed your gas mileage is worse than normal. This could indicate a fuel or ignition system issue that needs diagnosis.

Structure →3 issues
Your truck's paint and clearcoat are peeling and failing prematurely, even though it's been garage-kept with only 75,000 miles. This appears to be a widespread factory paint quality issue affecting many Tacomas across different model years and colors. Toyota has declined to take responsibility for the defective paint application. Fixing this would likely require having the affected areas professionally repainted or the clearcoat reapplied.

Your Tacoma's factory paint and clear coat are failing prematurely, particularly with the MGM (Magnetic Gray Metallic) paint color. This affects both your vehicle's appearance and its protection from rust and environmental damage. The manufacturer has been notified of the issue. Repair would typically involve sanding, repainting, and applying a new clear coat to affected areas.

Your truck's clear coat paint appears to be fading faster than normal, which has been reported on multiple 3rd generation Tacomas. While this isn't a safety issue, it affects the appearance and protection of your vehicle's paint. Addressing this would likely involve repainting affected areas or applying a protective clear coat.

Service Brakes →2 issues
Your truck's power-assisted braking system, which uses vacuum pressure to help you brake, may have an issue. The problem involves the hydraulic brake system that provides power assist when you press the brake pedal.

Your brake booster is leaking fluid into the cabin, causing brake fluid to drip behind the brake pedal and onto your floor mat. This reduces your braking system's effectiveness and creates a mess inside your vehicle. The brake booster will need to be inspected and likely replaced to stop the leak.

Electrical System,air Bags,unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your steering wheel clock spring has failed, which controls the buttons on your steering wheel and cruise control — both no longer work. Your airbag warning light is now on, which means the system may not deploy properly in a crash. The fix will likely involve replacing the clock spring assembly under the steering wheel.

Power Train,engine →1 issue
While driving on the highway, your engine suddenly lost power and began sputtering, causing the check engine light and traction control light to turn on. You had to pull over to the side of the road, and afterward your Tacoma would only drive at about 25 mph. The issue may involve a faulty sensor, fuel delivery problem, or ignition system failure that needs diagnostic testing and repair.

Electrical System →1 issue
You purchased a 2017 Toyota Tacoma that showed 87,000 miles at the time of sale, but when you registered it, the actual mileage was discovered to be 220,717 miles. This significant discrepancy suggests the odometer may have been tampered with or rolled back before your purchase. You may want to have a mechanic inspect the vehicle's service history and overall condition to understand what wear and tear it has actually experienced.

Unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your 2017 Tacoma has a water leak coming from the third brake light that won't stop, and mold is growing inside due to the moisture. A safety recall was issued for this problem, but the dealership says it has now expired and your vehicle may not be eligible anyway. This is a health concern, especially with young children in the vehicle. The fix will likely involve replacing the third brake light assembly and sealing it to prevent future water intrusion.

Seat Belts, seats, unknown Or Other →1 issue
Water has been leaking into your truck through the rear air-pressure vents, causing a moldy, musty smell inside for at least 6 months and visible mold growth on the driver's side kick plate. The mold buildup may be contributing to health issues like sinus problems. The dealership has agreed to replace the air vents but won't clean up the existing mold, which will require professional mold remediation or thorough interior cleaning.

Seat Belts →1 issue
The metal ends of your rear seatbelts are experiencing severe corrosion and breaking apart, even though no other parts of your vehicle show rust damage. This was discovered during routine maintenance at around 25,000 miles. The seatbelts may need to be replaced to ensure they function properly in a crash.

Seats →1 issue
Your driver's side heated seat isn't working—when you turn on the heated seat switch, nothing happens. Upon inspection, the electrical wiring and connector that powers the seat heater have melted and been destroyed, which is why the heating elements won't function. Toyota is aware of this issue and has published a technical service bulletin about it, but the dealer hasn't offered a fix yet. Repairing this will likely involve replacing the damaged wiring harness and heating element assembly for the driver's seat.
