While driving on the highway, you noticed white smoke coming from your car and an engine oil low warning light appeared on the dashboard. You pulled over and had the van towed, discovering that the oil coolant line had burst. This appears to be a known issue on these vehicles that you weren't aware of despite completing all recalls. The fix will likely involve replacing the burst oil coolant line.

WHILE DRIVING I HEARD A NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE. I STOPPED AND PARK THE VEHICLE, OPENED THE HOOD AN NOTICED OIL ALL OVER THE BOTTOM PART OF THE ENGINE. (OIL LEAK OR SEEP FROM THE ENGINE OIL COOLER PIPE).I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE FROM A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN STANFORD CT. AND I WAS NEVER ADVISED OF THIS ISSUE, NOR FROM TOYOTA OR THE DEALERSHIP ITSELF, EVEN THOUGH A COMMUNICATION WAS SENT TO ALL TOYOTA DEALER PRINCIPALS, SERVICE MANAGERS, PARTS MANAGERS. I SPENT $60.00 DOLLARS FOR TOW TRUCK / $148.14 ON TOYOTA ORIGINAL PARTS / $270.00 FOR LABOR. I SPOKE TO TWO COMPANY TOYOTA REPRESENTATIVE AND WAS INFORMED THAT THEY NO LONGER ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR COVERING THIS PROBLEM AS WARRANTY COVERAGE EXPIRED ON MARCH OF 2020.I WAS EXPECTING FOR TOYOTA TO COVER MY EXPENSES AS THIS IS A FACTORY ENGINEERING DESIGN DONE WRONG. MILLIONS OF PEOPLE COULD BE STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE IF THEY DO NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS NEGLIGENT DESIGN FLAW. TOYOTA DESIGNED AN RUBBER OIL HOSE THAT GETS STIFF AND BREAKS. THIS IS DESIGN NEGLIGENCE TO USE RUBBER HOSES ON AN OIL SYSTEM. TOYOTA REDESIGNED THIS PART WITH STEEL INSTEAD OF RUBBER .THIS SHOWS ME THEY KNEW THE DESIGN WAS BAD IN THE FIRST PLACE. VAN'S ABS AND VSC LIGHTS COME ON BUT NO OIL LIGHT WARNING. MY MOTOR STARTED MAKING NOISE BUT I DIDN'T KNOW IT RAN OUT OF OIL. THERE WAS NO OIL WARNING LIGHT. I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS THE MOTOR MAKING NOISE. MY CAR ENGINE WAS COMPLETELY OUT OF OIL. AGAIN, NO OIL LIGHT WARNING. SINCE I FOUND OUT ABOUT THIS, I FOUND OUT ABOUT FOUR MORE SIENNA'S THAT HAD THE SAME DEFECTIVE PARTS. FRANKLY ALL OF THESE HOSES WILL GO BAD AS THE MECHANIC REMARKED ABOUT THIS PROBLEM CAR ENGINEERS KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THEY ARE DOING WHEN THEY DESIGN A CAR. I WORKED IN MANUFACTURING AND ENGINEERING THOSE PARTS ARE WELL DOCUMENTED WHEN THEY ARE PREDICTED TO FAIL. ONE WOULD CONSIDER TWO SCENARIOS. 1.THEY HAD BAD ENGINEERS DESIGNING THIS SYSTEM, HOWEVER CAR MANUFACTURERS KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THEY ARE DOING WHEN THEY DESIGN A VEHICLE. 2.OR THEY DESIGNED IT TO BREAK TO SELL MORE REPLACEMENT ENGINES FOR FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS EACH. THEY KEPT THIS A SECRET OR MADE NO MENTION OF THIS PROBABLY TO SELL ENGINE REPLACEMENTS. THE TOYOTA MANAGER CALLED ME AND BASICALLY TOLD ME TOUGH. THEREFORE I WILL BE SUING THEM IN SMALL CLAIMS COURT. HOPEFULLY TOYOTA WILL BE REPLACING MY MOTOR. BY THE WAY I TAKE VERY GOOD CARE OF MY VEHICLES I MAINTAIN THEM WITH REGULAR VEHICLE INSPECTIONS ALONG WITH OIL CHANGES AT THE PRESCRIBED MILEAGE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 TOYOTA SIENNA. WHILE DRIVING, THE ENGINE OIL COOLER PIPE BURST AND SPEWED OIL ALL OVER THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE'S REAR WINDOW WAS COMPLETELY COVERED WITH OIL. THE MANUFACTURER EXTENDED THE WARRANTY; HOWEVER, THE CONTACT WAS NOT COVERED SINCE THE VEHICLE EXCEEDED THE WARRANTY. BUCKEYE TOYOTA (1903 RIVERWAY DR, LANCASTER, OH 43130, (740) 654-3943) STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT AUTHORIZE A REPAIR OUT OF WARRANTY UNLESS APPROVED BY THE MANUFACTURER. THE MANUFACTURER PROVIDED A CASE NUMBER AND STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT COVER THE COST OF THE REPAIRS. THE CONTACT CALLED THE STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 156,000.

OIL COOLER HOSE: FROM MY EXPERIENCE, AND FROM WHAT I'VE READ FROM OTHERS, THIS IS A CONSIDERABLE SAFETY ISSUE. A RECALL WOULD BE VERY APPROPRIATE FOR BOTH ROAD SAFETY AND FOR CONSUMER PROTECTION. A SUSPECTED BLOWN COOLER LINE JUST HAPPENED TO ME LAST NIGHT, AND I WAS VERY DISTRACTED WHEN I REALIZED MY 2011 TOYOTA SIENNA (ABOUT 125K MILES) WENT FROM PROVIDING NORMAL RESPONSIVENESS TO GIVING INCOMPREHENSIBLE FEEDBACK WITHIN SECONDS. A "LOW OIL" MESSAGE FLASHED ONCE ON THE CENTER CONSOLE AS I WAS PULLING OUT OF A GAS STATION INTO TRAFFIC. THIS LIGHT DID NOT RETURN. NO OTHER LIGHTS LIT UP AT ANY TIME. IMMEDIATELY, HOWEVER, I NOTICED HESITATION WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE. I THOUGHT THAT IT WAS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM AT THAT POINT, PERHAPS IT WAS AFFECTING THE FUEL INJECTORS. THEN I NOTICED A CLICKING NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE. AT THAT POINT, I PULLED OVER AT THE NEXT SAFEST OPPORTUNITY AND TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE. I POPPED THE HOOD AND NOTICED OIL EVERYWHERE TOWARD THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT/UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE DIP STICK WAS DRY. THIS ALL HAPPENED WITHIN 0.75 MILES ON A TWO LANE STATE HIGHWAY (ONE LANE IN EACH DIRECTION) WITH A 55 MPH SPEED LIMIT. I CERTAINLY WASN'T DRIVING DEFENSIVELY DURING THIS TIME, AND I HAD VERY MINIMAL AWARENESS OF ANY VEHICLES AROUND ME. THE ACCELERATION ISSUE COULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC IF I HAD TRIED TO BEAT TRAFFIC THAT WAS FAR ENOUGH AWAY TO PROCEED, YET CLOSE ENOUGH TO THINK TWICE. FORTUNATELY, I'M NOT AN AGGRESSIVE DRIVER, AND I WAITED. THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE HAS BAFFLED ME AS I'VE NEVER EXPERIENCED SUCH A COMPLETE AND SUDDEN FAILURE WHILE DRIVING A VEHICLE. PLEASE CONSIDER THIS REPORT AND REVIEW THE NUMEROUS ONLINE REPORTS FROM DRIVERS WHO ALSO EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN, MASSIVE OIL LEAK WHILE DRIVING THEIR 2007-2011 TOYOTA SIENNAS. TOYOTA IS WELL AWARE OF THIS RECURRING ISSUE. A SAFETY RECALL WOULD SEEM APPROPRIATE.

THE MINIVAN SUDDENLY, WITH NO WARNING OR INDICATION RAPIDLY LOST ALL ENGINE OIL IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. AS I WAS DRIVING ON A CITY STREET, I GOT A WARNING ABOUT FIVE MINUTES INTO A DRIVE ABOUT LOW ENGINE OIL PRESSURE, WHEN IT WAS BASICALLY DRY. I HAD IT TOWED TO A MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS QUICKLY CONFIRMED THAT THE OIL COOLER PIPE HAD FAILED CAUSING THIS TO HAPPEN. I HAVE 120,000 MILES ON THE VAN.

TOYOTA CORPORATION NEEDS TO REFUND THIS TO ME AND ALL OF THE OTHER SIENNA OWNERS WHO HAVE HAD THIS EXPERIENCE.

TOYOTA HAS A KNOWN FAILURE ISSUE WITH THE ENGINE OIL COOLER HOSE ON THIS MODEL. WITH THIS ISSUE, A DEFECT IN THE HOSE CAUSES OIL TO LEAK RAPIDLY FROM THE HOSE. A SEARCH OF THE INTERNET CAN FIND MANY INSTANCES OF THIS ISSUE, WITH CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE RESULTING IN CERTAIN CASES. TOYOTA HAS ISSUED WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT ZE2 TO COVER THIS. THE WARRANTY TERM FOR THIS ITEM IS EXTENDED TO TEN YEARS AND 150,000 MILES. I EXPERIENCED THIS FAILURE LAST WEEK. IT OCCURRED AS I WAS PULLING INTO A CAR WASH. SMOKE STARTED COMING FROM MY ENGINE AND THE CAR WASH WORKER NOTICED OIL LEAKING FROM UNDERNEATH. I HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED AND THE HOSE REPLACED. THE TOTAL COST WAS $665. I ATTEMPTED TO GET COVERAGE FROM TOYOTA, BUT MY REQUEST WAS DENIED DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE MILEAGE WAS AT 167,000. THE REASON FOR MY COMPLAINT IS THAT A MAJOR, KNOWN DEFECT SUCH AS THIS SHOULD NOT BE TIME OR MILEAGE LIMITED. GIVEN THE CATASTROPHIC FAILURE THAT CAN RESULT FROM THIS DEFECT, TOYOTA SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACING THE DEFECTIVE HOSES RATHER THAN FORCING CUSTOMERS TO ENDURE THE PROBLEMS OF FAILURE IN THE FIELD, WHICH OFTEN RESULTED IN BLOWN ENGINES AND THE NEED TO HAVE VEHICLES TOWED IN FOR REPAIRS. IF TOYOTA IS NOT GOING TO TAKE THE STEP OF PREVENTING THE PROBLEM, THEY SHOULD AT LEAST TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM WHEN IT OCCURS - REGARDLESS OF AGE OR MILEAGE - BECAUSE THE CAUSE IS CLEARLY THE RESULT OF A KNOWN DEFECT. I CONTACTED TOYOTA WARRANTY SERVICE FOR REIMBURSEMENT AND MY CLAIM WAS DENIED. I CALLED BACK AND ASKED TO ESCALATE IT. I WAS TRANSFERRED TO A HIGHER LEVEL AGENT WHO AGAIN DENIED MY CLAIM AND TOLD ME TO ADDRESS MY COMPLAINT OUTSIDE OF TOYOTA, WHICH IS WHY I AM FILING HERE. WITH THIS COMPLAINT, I AM SEEKING REIMBURSEMENT OF MY $665 COSTS. I FURTHER SUGGEST THAT TOYOTA BE URGED TO REVISE WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT ZE2 TO REMOVE THE MILEAGE AND TIME LIMITS.

OIL STARTED LEAKING HEAVILY; I WAS NOTIFIED BY A COWORKER AND WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR INTO FIRESTONE BEFORE THE ENGINE LOCKED UP. LOW OIL PRESSURE WARNING CAME ON AS I DROVE INTO FIRESTONE LOT. TECHS TOLD ME THE OIL COOLING HOSE FAILED (AT 109000 MILES). OLD HOSE WAS MADE OF RUBBER ATTACHED TO METAL PLATES AND HAD FAILED TWO PLACES IN THE RUBBER HOSE. NEW HOSE IS MADE OF METAL SO TECHS CHECKED FOR A RECALL AND FOUND NONE. THIS COULD BE A BIG SAFETY ISSUE IF PEOPLE ARE NOT AWARE OF WHAT IS HAPPENING AND GET STRANDED SOMEWHERE OR THE ENGINE LOCKS OUT ON THEM AT SPEED.

THE AIR CONDITIONER HOUSING IS LEAKING WATER ONTO SAFETY-CRITICAL PARTS. THIS HOUSING IS MADE OF PLASTIC PARTS THAT ARE GLUED TOGETHER. WATER IS CONDENSED DURING THE COOLING CYCLE, AND IT THEN COLLECTS AT THE BOTTOM AND EXITS THE VEHICLE THROUGH A RUBBER HOSE. THE GLUE HOLDING THE HOUSING TOGETHER HAS FAILED. WATER IS LEAKING FROM THE HOUSING AND RUNNING ONTO THE COMPUTER MODULE THAT DEPLOYS THE AIRBAGS. I HAVE BEEN ADVISED BY THE DEALER THAT IT IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE WITH A WET MODULE BECAUSE THE AIRBAGS CAN DEPLOY WHILE MOVING, OR THAT THEY MIGHT NOT DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF A COLLISION. AN IDENTICAL PROBLEM AFFECTS TOYOTA MODELS CAMRY, AVALON, AND VENZA. IN MY PARTICULAR CASE, THE WATER HAD APPARENTLY BEEN LEAKING FOR SOME TIME - PERHAPS A YEAR OR TWO - AND WAS DETECTED PURELY BY CHANCE. THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT RUST ON THE FLOORBOARD OF THE VEHICLE. I HAVE DISCUSSED THE ISSUE WITH TOYOTA, AND THEY REFUSE TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE RECALL ON CAMRY, AVALON, AND VENZA APPEAR TO BE IDENTICAL TO THE CIRCUMSTANCES I HAVE EXPERIENCED, YET THERE IS NO RECALL ON THE SIENNA. 9/1/12 I WAS DRIVING ALONG AT HIGHWAY SPEED OF APROX. 55-60 MPH WHEN I DECIDED TO GO INTO A SHOPPING CENTER. I SLOWED MY CAR DOWN AND MADE A RIGHT TURN TO ENTER A SHOPPING CENTER. AS I WAS SLOWING DOWN TO PULL UP TO THE ENTRANCE OF THE STORE I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE CAR DIDN'T WANT TO STOP. I HAD TO APPLY AN ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE BUT IT DIDN'T STOP THE ENGINE FROM RACING AND TRYING TO LURCH FORWARD. I FORCED THE CAR OUT OF DRIVE AND PUT IT INTO REVERSE AND THE ENGINE WENT BACK TO NORMAL. 9/6/12 I WAS IN MY CAR AND APPROACHED A TRAFFIC LIGHT BEHIND ANOTHER CAR. I SLOWED DOWN FROM APROX. 25 MPH. AS THE CAR SLOWED I FELT THE CAR LURCH FORWARD, I APPLIED THE BRAKE HARDER SO AS NOT TO HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME OR THE PEOPLE WALKING ACROSS THE STREET. I AGAIN MOVED THE CAR OUT OF GEAR AND THE ENGINE CAME TO NORMAL. 9/9/12 I WAS IN A SHOPPING CENTER WAITING FOR MY WIFE TO COME OUT AND I HAD TO MOVE MY CAR TO LET SOMEONE ELSE GET OUT A PARKING SPACE WHEN MY CAR STARTED TO ACCELERATE. I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AT THE TIME THIS OCCURRED AND AS MUCH PRESSURE I PUT ON THE BRAKE WAS NOT ENOUGH TO STOP THE CAR. THE CAR STILL HAD ENOUGH POWER TO GO FORWARD EVEN THOUGH I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. I FEAR FOR MY LIFE AND ANY PEOPLE THAT ARE IN MY CAR, LET ALONE OUTSIDE OF MY CAR. 5 MONTH OLD TOYOTA SIENNA 2011 STALLED AFTER THE LIGHTS INSIDE THE DASHBOARD (CONTROL PANEL) STARTED BLINKING AND THEN WOULD NOT START AGAIN. IT WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER ON 12/22/2010. DEALER INITIALLY (ON 12/27/2010) SAID IT IS DUE TO WATER DAMAGE AND ENGINE HAS TO BE REPLACED. DEALER WAS NOT ABLE TO FIND ANY EVIDENCE OF SIENNA BEING SUBMERGED IN WATER (AS IT DID NOT GO INTO ANY BIG PUDDLE OR DEEP WATERS). I OPENED A CASE WITH TOYOTA ON 12/28/2010. I WAS IN TOUCH WITH TOYOTA DEALER BUT CASE MANAGER AT TOYOTA INFORMED THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO REACH/SPEAK TO THE DEALER FOR 2 DAYS EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE BOTH IN CALIFORNIA. SHE INFORMED ME THAT THEIR POLICY IS TO CONCUR WITH DEALER WITHOUT EVEN LOOKING AT THE REPORT OR TALKING TO THEM AND THEY WOULD NEITHER INVESTIGATE NOR INSPECT. MY INSURANCE COMPANY (AAA) PERFORMED VISUAL INSPECTION AND FOUND TOO MANY METAL PIECES INSIDE THE ENGINE. INSURANCE COMPANY ALSO FOLLOWED UP WITH DEALER AND INFORMED THERE ARE OTHER CASES WHERE THEY HAD SEEN SIMILAR ISSUE WITH TOYOTA SIENNA 2011 AND THIS DOES NOT SEEM TO BE A WATER DAMAGE. THERE HAS BEEN NEITHER AN EXPLANATION NOR A FOLLOW-UP FROM TOYOTA AS TO WHAT THE CAUSE WAS. DEALER REPORTED BACK ON 01/04/2011 AND INFORMED ME THAT IT MIGHT BE A MECHANICAL FAILURE AND TOYOTA WILL FIX IT. I AM NOW CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY AND ANYONE WHO DRIVES SIENNA. WHAT IF STALLS IN THE MIDDLE OF FREEWAY ? WHAT IF THIS HAPPENS AGAIN ? WORRIED AND TENSED OWNER OF TOYOTA SIENNA 2011.

VAN JUST WON'T START. IT CRANKS OVER BUT WON'T START, AFTER TENS MINUTES IT STARTED UP FINE. VAN HAS ONLY 510 MILES. AT 5500 MILES VEHICLE AGAIN CRANKED BUT WOULD NOT START. AFTER IT STARTED, IT RAN ROUGH AND DIED AT TIMES, TOOK IT TO DEALER BUT THEY CAN NOT FIND PROBLEMS. VEHICLE RUNS FINE, AT ABOUT 5700 VEHICLE RUNS ROUGH AND DIES AT STOP LIGHTS, TOOK BACK TO DEALER THIS TIME THEY SAY IT WAS A BAD COMPUTER, TOYOTA TOOK CARE OF IT, A FEW THOUSANDS MILES LATER SAME PROBLEMS RUN ROUGH AT TIMES AND WON'T START, TOOK TO DEALER, CAN NOT FINE PROBLEMS, VEHICLE RAN FINE, NOW AT 10500 MILES SAME PROBLEMS AGAIN RAN ROUGH AND DIE AT STOP LIGHT, BUT RAN FINE JUST A FEW MINUTES LATER, DROVE HOME NEXT DAY ,IT WON'T START. TOW TO DEALER THEY SAY IT HAS SOME MOISTURE IN THE COMPUTER.

2011 TOYOTA SIENNA VAN WITH 220 MILES ON IT CAUGHT FIRE IN MY DRIVEWAY 2 MINUTES AFTER PARKING IT THERE. NO WARNING LIGHTS OR ANYTHING. VEHICLE IS A TOTAL LOSS, NO RESPONSE FROM TOYOTA FOR OVER TWO WEEKS, OWNED THE BRAND NEW VAN FOR LESS THAN A WEEK. A CAUSE AND EFFECT INVESTIGATOR HIRED BY MY INS CO FOUND THE PROBLEM TO BE A FAULTY FAN WIRE THAT SHORTED OUT. EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO MY HOUSE AND LANDSCAPING AS WELL. BURNED OUT VAN STILL SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY CAUSING DANGER WITH BROKEN GLASS AND SOOT TO MY CHILDREN AND PETS. UNABLE TO GET ANY RESPONSE WHAT SO EVER FROM TOYOTA. THE DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN EXTREMELY HELPFUL. *TR
