Your 4Runner's frame has developed significant corrosion and rust that your service technician determined makes the vehicle unsafe to drive. This was discovered during an inspection for a rattling noise in the rear. Toyota has indicated there are no known issues or recalls related to this frame corrosion problem.

NHTSA #: 11510240
criticalUNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Jan 2023

Your 4Runner's frame is severely rusted, particularly underneath and toward the rear, and pieces are breaking away. You're concerned that if another vehicle hits you from behind, the weakened frame could fail catastrophically and create a dangerous situation while you're driving.

NHTSA #: 11500583
criticalUNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Nov 2022

Your vehicle's frame has developed severe corrosion and rust that wasn't properly sealed from the factory. The frame deteriorated to the point where your car started swaying while driving, and it bent when a mechanic lifted it for inspection. Despite bringing your car to the Toyota dealership for all scheduled maintenance, the dealership never reported or warned you about the corrosion damage during routine inspections. Addressing this will likely require professional frame repair or replacement, which may involve removing and treating the rusted sections or replacing compromised frame components.

NHTSA #: 11493998
highUNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Sep 2025

Your 4Runner's frame is experiencing excessive corrosion. This rust buildup can weaken the structural integrity of the vehicle over time, potentially affecting safety and resale value. A mechanic should inspect the frame to assess the extent of damage and determine if repairs or protective treatments are needed.

Filed: Nov 2022

Your rear hatchback glass shattered unexpectedly when your son turned off the defrost while the vehicle was parked. He wasn't driving at the time, but the sudden breakage was alarming. You've discovered this is a known issue that Toyota should have identified during their inspection, and the dealer is refusing to repair it despite it being a defect in their equipment.

NHTSA #: 11495079
highUNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Sep 2022

Your 4Runner's undercarriage and frame are developing rust due to a frame defect. Toyota has recalled and settled this same issue on other models, but the 4Runner was not included in those recalls. This rust could potentially weaken the structural integrity of your vehicle over time.

NHTSA #: 11485369
Structure3 issues
criticalSTRUCTURE
Filed: Sep 2025

The frame of your 4Runner has rusted severely, causing the gas tank to fall through to the ground while driving. This is a serious safety risk that could lead to fuel leaks or loss of vehicle integrity. Both a mechanic and welding company confirmed the rust is excessive and unusual for a vehicle of this age. The fix will likely require frame replacement or extensive welding repairs to restore structural integrity.

NHTSA #: 11686705
criticalSTRUCTURE
Filed: Jul 2025

Your 4Runner's frame has developed rust that has eaten through the metal in places, creating a structural safety concern. You may notice rust damage on the frame underneath your vehicle. This is a serious structural issue that should be inspected by a professional immediately. Addressing this will likely require frame repair or replacement by a certified technician.

NHTSA #: 11674391
highSTRUCTURE
Filed: Dec 2023

Your 4Runner failed a state inspection because the subframe (the metal framework that supports your vehicle) has severe corrosion and was deemed unsafe to drive. Your vehicle didn't show any warning lights before this happened. A dealer confirmed the subframe needs to be replaced due to extensive rust damage. Fixing this will require removing and replacing the corroded subframe structure.

Filed: Dec 2025

While driving with the rear defrost on, you heard a loud noise from the back of your 4Runner and discovered the rear hatch window had completely shattered for no apparent reason. The glass remained in the window frame but is close to falling out. This happened suddenly with no warning signs beforehand.

NHTSA #: 11703997
highVISIBILITY/WIPER
Filed: Jan 2024

Your 4Runner's rear window suddenly shattered and exploded while driving, shortly after you cleared snow from the car. Glass could have scattered into the backseat where your child was sitting. Toyota has apparently been aware of this issue in the past, as they offered extended warranty coverage on this part through 2018. The repair will likely involve replacing the rear window glass and checking for any defects in the window assembly.

Structure,unknown Or Other1 issue
criticalSTRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Feb 2025

Your 4Runner failed inspection due to exhaust leaks and severe frame rust. You didn't receive a recall notice for the frame issue despite owning the vehicle for many years. With the frame rusted through, the vehicle is unsafe to drive. Addressing this will likely require professional frame repair or replacement, which is a major structural repair.

CrashFiled: Nov 2024

Your 2006 4Runner was involved in a T-bone collision after another vehicle cut in front without warning. The airbags deployed during the crash, but your son suffered second-degree burns on his right side and first-degree burns on his lower body, along with a concussion requiring medical attention. The vehicle was declared a total loss by your insurance company.

NHTSA #: 11624146
Trailer Hitches1 issue
criticalTRAILER HITCHES
Filed: Nov 2023

While towing a 16-foot trailer at 60 mph on the highway, the 2-inch hitch ball separated from its shank, causing your trailer to partially disconnect. Although safety chains prevented complete separation, your rear bumper was heavily damaged when the trailer made contact with it. The hitch ball (a Switch Ball #42178 purchased in September 2022 and used for the first time) was found still locked in the trailer's coupler while the shank remained attached to your vehicle. The manufacturer has denied responsibility and claimed user error despite proper installation and use. Inspection of the failed hitch ball assembly and potential replacement with a different hitch ball or complete hitch system may be necessary.

NHTSA #: 11553861
Service Brakes1 issue
criticalSERVICE BRAKES
Filed: Mar 2023

Your front brake calipers are corroding, causing the inner pistons to freeze and stick. This makes your brake pads wear unevenly — the outer pads wear twice as fast as the inner pads — which increases your stopping distance when braking. This problem has happened repeatedly even after replacing the brake pads multiple times, and you're not getting any warning light about reduced braking performance.

NHTSA #: 11511454
Exterior Lighting1 issue
highEXTERIOR LIGHTING
Filed: Mar 2023

Your headlights have failed multiple times because water is getting inside the sealed headlight assembly. You've had the entire headlight assembly replaced three times at your own expense, but the problem keeps happening with each new unit. Three different body shops, including two authorized Toyota dealers, confirmed there's no design flaw that should cause this water intrusion, suggesting a manufacturing or assembly defect. The fix will likely require Toyota to either redesign the headlight assembly seal or replace it with a corrected version.

NHTSA #: 11510430
Suspension1 issue
highSUSPENSION
Filed: Nov 2022

Your 4Runner's frame is rusting extensively, with rust first noticed in the front right area near the tie rod and now spreading across the entire frame. A mechanic discovered a pinhole in the rusted metal during a routine visit. You may need to replace the entire frame at significant cost, as the rust has progressed noticeably in just a few months.

Filed: May 2024

Your 4Runner has excessive rust buildup on the undercarriage, which is the area underneath your vehicle. This rust can weaken structural components and suspension parts over time if not addressed. You may want to have a mechanic inspect the extent of the rust and treat or replace affected parts as needed.
