Your 4Runner's frame has developed excessive rust that has weakened its structural integrity. Your mechanic discovered that the rust is severe enough that your suspension could potentially detach from the frame, which would be a serious safety issue while driving. The problem was confirmed by an independent service center and poses a significant risk to your safety.

Filed: Jan 2025

Your 4Runner's underframe has developed significant rust, particularly on the passenger side between the doors where the structural metal has corroded away, leaving only the top surface of that member intact. This affects the structural integrity of your vehicle. The fix would likely involve having a mechanic or body shop assess the extent of the rust damage and either reinforce or replace the corroded structural components.

Your 4Runner's frame is showing signs of rust and corrosion sooner than expected. This is a structural issue that could affect the vehicle's integrity and safety over time. A mechanic will need to inspect the frame closely and may recommend rust treatment, protective coatings, or frame repair depending on how severe the damage is.

Your 4Runner's frame and undercarriage have developed extensive rust much earlier than typical for a vehicle this age. This corrosion affects the structural components underneath your vehicle, which support the entire car. You may want to have this inspected by a mechanic to determine if the rust is affecting safety or structural integrity. Addressing this typically involves rust removal, sandblasting, and applying protective coatings to prevent further damage.

Your rear hatch glass unexpectedly shattered while you were using the defroster, preceded by a burning smell. This appears to be a known issue that Toyota addressed with a limited warranty program (ZG7) from March 2017 to April 2018, but the company is declining to cover similar failures occurring after that window. The fix will likely involve replacing the rear hatch glass assembly and investigating the defroster heating element for defects.

Your rear window shattered while you were using the rear window defrost feature. This is a safety concern as it compromises visibility and leaves glass debris. The repair will involve replacing the rear window glass.

Your rear windshield suddenly shattered with a loud noise while driving in rainy, cold weather with the defroster running. There was no impact from outside objects—the glass simply broke, possibly due to thermal stress from the cold temperature and defroster heat. Fortunately, no glass struck your passengers. The fix will require replacing the entire rear windshield.

Your 4Runner's frame has extensive rust, holes, and cracks throughout, creating a structural integrity concern. While a Toyota dealership has said it's currently safe to drive, the frame damage may eventually compromise the vehicle's ability to stay together, potentially causing loss of control at highway speeds. A dealership inspection can confirm the extent of the damage. Addressing this issue may require professional frame inspection, rust removal, welding repairs, or frame replacement.

You discovered that your 2005 Toyota 4Runner's odometer reading was significantly different between when you bought it (217,000 miles) and when you registered it (342,912 miles), indicating the mileage may have been tampered with or altered. This is a case of potential odometer fraud from the private sale. You may need to contact your local authorities or consumer protection agency and consult with an attorney about your options, as this involves the vehicle's history and your purchase agreement.

You purchased a 2005 4Runner that the dealership did not properly disclose had significant rust on the underside—the salesman avoided showing you photos of the rusty areas and later recoated them before relisting the vehicle. In addition to the rust issue, your car has an exhaust leak from the manifold area that produces a loud ticking noise, and the air conditioning isn't cooling properly due to a refrigerant leak or low freon level. Addressing these issues will likely require replacing the exhaust manifold gasket and seals, refilling or replacing the AC refrigerant system, and treating or replacing rusted undercarriage components.

Your vehicle's frame is showing rust and corrosion, similar to a known issue that affected 2005 Tacomas from the same year. Toyota replaced frames for affected Tacomas, but not for 4Runners with the same problem. Many other 4th generation 4Runners appear to be experiencing similar rust issues. Addressing frame rust typically involves professional inspection, rust treatment, and potentially frame repair or replacement depending on severity.

Your 4Runner's sub-frame (the structural support underneath your vehicle) has developed severe corrosion. This was discovered during a service visit at an independent mechanic when the vehicle had about 166,000 miles. A corroded sub-frame can compromise your vehicle's structural integrity and safety. Repairing this will likely involve having the corroded sub-frame inspected, treated, or replaced depending on the extent of the damage.
